Kanemaki on multiple occasions alters thIngs to better serve the flow of the drama in a novel environment, including new dialogue and inner monologues.

Where Nomura intends to keep the relationship between Sora and Kairi vague, Kanemaki assumes that SRK is a bit of a love triangle and that Sora feels inferior to Riku, and has minor angst throughout the story.

But that's not in the games, now, is it?

In the first KH it felt like a love triangle between Sora, Kairi and Riku. In CoM Namine was fucking up Sora and Repliku's memories so they both had total hard on's for her; but Namine pretty said "The more prominent I make myself in Sora's memories don't matter because it just makes his love for Kairi even stronger." or some shit. Sora says, "So we weren't really friends or something more." so he was definitely bit by the love bug and probably had a thing for Kairi if he felt so strongly about her Nobody.

Then in KH2, everything was gay as fuck, especially the ending. I guess you could say the moment where Sora held onto Riku and started crying wasn't actually a gay/romantic thing since Sora didn't know what had happened to Riku after he got stuck in the realm of darkness with Mickey and a year had passed since he had seen him. But, the part where after fighting Xemnas, Sora had to help Riku walk outta there (and had to hold up his pants at the same time.) then they sat on beach in TRoD, started talking about how they felt about each other and then agreed to be part of darkness felt gay as fuck.

But I'm pretty sure the love triangle still exists since Kairi's letter showed up and then light ex machina appeared to send them home..because power of friendship/love maybe. (then there's the Namine/Roxas bein together within Kairi/Sora and saying they'll hang out everyday.)

Also Riku's death cry is a forlorn "...Kairi..."

tldr: OT3 is still going strong. But no one's going to 100% hook up because friendship probably.
