Before you start tweaking the laser you should try adding some sort of effect at the point where the laser meets the target. Something to show that the target is being damaged. It might make you like how static it looks right now if you add something cool at the point of impact.

Anyone here with the Lua C API and binding classes?

My idea is to have an Entity object in C++ that has basic properties like position.
So:
class Entity {
int x, y;
}
for example.

I want to bind this to Lua and have direct access to these properties so I can utilize syntax like:

local entity = Entity.init()
entity.x = entity.x + 5*dt

But it seems I'm only have to bind functions, and I'm not super proficient with metamethods in Lua. So I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction?

Let's say I wanted to create something like a "rectangle" object with properties like "left" "top" "right" "bottom" etc... This would be pretty easy in most OOP languages using a struct or something since it's just a bundle of data.

Is there any way to do it in GML? GM's objects are way too inefficient to use as simple data blobs. The closest I could find in the documentation would be using a ds_map, but that uses strings for keys which isn't very efficient either.

Planning a hacking mission for simulating a military coup attempt so you can make bank when the markets react.. what are some ideas?

>Interrupt satellite uplink for state TV so it looks like they're shutting down communications
>DDoS certain servers to simulate a block on social media
>email doctored footage to journalists
>short their currency before the drop
>overload electrical transformers remotely to simulate explosions around the capitol

Interesting decisions would be, how much effort do you put into hiding your actions/buying you more time before the ruse is discovered, how well do you time your actions, and how long do you risk holding on to your positions before cashing out? What are some other things the player could do?

How do you design hitboxes and hurtboxes in a game like hyper light drifter?
I was thinking a regular rectangular hurtbox in the character, and a "floorbox" to simulate depth. That way whenever attacks and hitboxes come out, it'll check if
1. The the hitbox collides with enemy hurtbox, and
2. if both floorboxes have at least one mutual number in its domain or range

Why do people beat around the bush so much? The reason girls are called attention whores here is because 90% of the userbase are losers who have grown to hate women after not having a gf for too long or simply having a horrible relationship with a girl. >>
>>148668678
Looks cool.

I'll comment on the squish effect as well and suggest that it should be a game mechanic where if you jump at the end of the squish effect you jump higher. You could also make it so you squish more the higher you fall from. That way you'd want to keep your momentum going by jumping higher and higher by timing your jumps properly.

Kind of like Kirby's ball ability, but less awful.

I might have to disagree here. Everything is constructed of basic shapes: we even narrow down body parts to these shapes (oval/circle/square for head, cylinders for limbs, etc). Most concept artists use those to create characters. Complicated jumbles of shapes can make for overly-complex character design.
>blobs of color
Makes sense, but complex shading for game sprites can be extremely time-consuming. Do you have any examples of games with hand-drawn non-pixel sprites that meet your standards? Sincerely asking here.

I have nothing against flash style art. I wouldn't use it myself, but it looks good in some games. It's hard to not look cheap, though.
Whoever I was speaking with mentiones his art looking like flash. I mentioned that they were pretty much going for that style.

about a game, Dungeons of Dredmor, maybe? It is pixel art, but it does not look like pixel art.

Do you have any examples of stuff you like? I'm mostly just flying blind, here, so it would be nice to look at stuff to get a better idea of how to improve. That's not meant to be condescending or anything. I'm actually looking for examples that other people think look good, whatever their standards may be. But it's not abusable, the vertical and horizontal speeds are the same but the only difference is that you are moving in both directions at the same time.

If you want to reach a diagonal objective it's obviously faster and should be that way but if you want to reach a straight objective then moving diagonally won't get you there faster.

I was actually thinking about Skull Girls, Lab Zero makes a really nice work with their 2d graphics.
Is kinda hard to explain, but when you are looking for a shadow or light tone you need to move in the color wheel too, usually up (for a warmer color) for lights, and down (for a cold one) for shadows, but it actually works too if you do it in reverse, the trick is to change the color to get a better contrast, if you just pick the same one but brighter or darker is gonna look pretty bland, the more you move in the wheel, the more contrast you will get.
That reminds you to flash animation because the people who make those tend to put a lot of work trying to get colorful characters, but never put the same dedication into shadows.

Fucking agree. They also had to retire Leon Magnus, I believe. You'd think Bamco would realize that their character polls constantly peaking with games from an entire console generation ago could tell them something about their writing, but apparently not.

I also think their character designs were at their apex with Vesperia, too, but there are one or two these days that are still decent. Ludger's was great, in my opinion.

That's all I've got to say on the matter. We could be making games instead of arguing.

Anyway, Unityfriends, I need your help.

I've been trying to learn Unity (and I suck at it) through this tutorial [http://www.lessmilk.com/tutorial/space-shooter-unity-1]

So far so good, except my bullets don't disappear after they're fired. They keep going past the camera and on to infinity.

spaceshipScript.cs : http://pastebin.com/18QNVrzE
bulletScript.cs : http://pastebin.com/PjVMyhGj

I've attached the RigidBody2D bullet prefab to the spaceship, and theoretically each bullet should be destroyed when it leaves the camera's with "onBecameInvisible"

Any ideas on why the fuck this is happening? I know I could use something like a collision box around the border of the game or a time based way of destroying the bullets, but I'm trying to learn the engine and I want to know why this isn't working because, in theory, it should. Destroying objects when the camera isn't looking at them would be helpful in the future.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Try google cloud, they can run a VM connected to internet for you. They offer a free trial for one month, you can spend up to 300$ in that time. You have to register with a credit card, (even debit works, though) but their policy is to stop all services when you run out of the trial unless you explicitly tell them to charge you and keep going. I don't know how much exactly do they take, and everything runs on linux afaik.

It's pretty normal to have most of the engine stuff done in the first week to couple months depending on the game's complexity. It's actually building the content (i.e. levels, graphics, sound, etc) that takes so fucking long

Sure you could make your game look like garbage with boring levels and get it done in a few weeks but then you just have a shit game
>>
>>148677230

Some of those assets are notorious for horribly lagging the engine when dropped into the level, but after first instance they work fine.

What are some interesting things I can include in a cyberpunk buddy cop beat em up?

The early idea I have right now is to make it somewhat freeform where you can drive around the city (just a fancy overworld map, not like GTA or anything) and slowly unlock the main story quest as explore and grind.

- Health bar, reputation score (basically just lets you unlock more), Loose Cannon meter (got to keep it low to avoid being kicked off the force.)

- Collect cash to buy upgrades/cyber enhancements

- Stake out minigame where you basically just have to pay attention by panning the camera while also selecting dialogue banter with your partner and sipping coffee

- Car chase minigame with plenty of fruit carts, empty cardboard boxes, and movers handling glass panes, little old ladies, etc.

- Collect various underground contacts and shake them down for info

- Switch between both partners as some areas are only accessible by one and not the other

Is there anything else you can think of? I'm going to sprinkle as many references to movies as I can.

Does anyone here use UE4? I've been into 3d modeling/VFX/Fluid sim/Photography/Cinematography/Sound and music production for about the past 10 years with not that much to show for it and I'm looking to finally use all of my experience together to create some VR experiences. >If the center of the ball is more than RADIUS units to the left/right/whatever of this line (different for each line) then the ball is definitely NOT touching the paddle, so return false.
Then check each corner:
>If this corner is more than RADIUS units away from the ball, then return false.

They won't do shit unless there's already a model to copy off of that somebody else spent time and effort figuring out all the mechanics for.

your spaceship crashes on a planet whose dominant civilisation is long extinct and you're the only of a handful of survivors that isn't cripplingly wounded. the only usable supplies are on your ship and you need to get to [insert end goal here], without being able to get any more supplies than you looted from the ship. call it Entropy.

puzzle platformer with token combat maybe?
make it so tools break when not careful/patient (player should ideally be completely in control of how much wear their gear takes), token combat with random scavengers where the point is on ammo conservation, a soft time limit with food running out, etc.
the idea would be to put the player under fatalistic pressure.

why is finding unity C# tutorials that aren't terrible like pulling teeth?

why does everyone dwell on obvious shit for several minutes but then completely gloss over essential information?

i just want to make a string of add force in timed intervals that then loops the command. its so fucking frustrating to know exactly what you want something to do but not have the language to articulate how to ask how to make it work.

are there any C# unity resources that i can pick away at my own pace learning only what i need for specific concepts?

I'm trying to follow this tutorial and I think I'm in over my head. It made sense for a while, but then he started adding lots of weird methods to handle coordinates and I'm getting lost. I'm up to the part where I should be getting this but instead I'm getting an outofrange exception.

Hatred for example only got memed on because the devs were crazy white supremacists or some shit.

Also, it really depends on what you mean by serious.
Is it "documentary" serious or "this is my goal" serious?

I actually think that if you made it in a really serious documentary "this happened but it is wrong" way it could get a lot of positive attention, movies already did it and other even touchier things so why not games?

I guess 3d puzzles are an unsaturated market , i once had an idea for it.
I figured that if you gave the player a mechanic to modify the envirorment in ulimited but yet constricted ways you could get interesting puzzle solutions.
Like a tile that you can place anywhere you reach which attracts you if you have a tile that pushes you away you could reach a ledge you need to reach that sort of thing, maybe some minigame that determines the attributes of the tiles would be a plus

motivation to do something like this is broken up into segmants of tedium and frustration. there's a lot of people out there presenting anything as if they did it overnight but they never show you what went on behind the scenes because most people only care about a finished product and wont give you the time of day.

i have this same process for creating music where the initial thrill of discovery cannot carry you trough the tedium of actually structuring the rest of the piece.

unfourtunetly there is no short term solution, this generation and myself included have been rewired to pursue instant gratification by easily and readily availible disposable media. previous generations had much fewer of these outlets so work and tedium really were all what was needed to carry someone through a project.

your only hope is finding that next plateu of discovery and trying to get as much shit done before you start to slump back into despising your project.

eat better, stop jerking off everyday, do aerobic excercises and try to limit any electronic use outside of your project.

According to the documentation, the engine handles that automatically via MonoBehaviour.

>This message is sent to all scripts attached to the renderer. OnBecameVisible and OnBecameInvisible is useful to avoid computations that are only necessary when the object is visible.

The object is rendered. It leaves the camera's view (as far as I can tell), yet the bullet remains. Somewhere I'm fucking up, and I'm comfortable asking this question because I can continue to try to fix it while I wait for responses and it's a low-skill enough question that I'm likely to get an answer. thoughts on the long term sustainibillity of playmaker?

when will i actually start having to code?

i just want to make a game concept not neseccarily a game.
>>
>>148702858
SFML really does make rendering stuff trivial. Even without Anon's wrapper it shouldn't take more than 50 lines.

>>148702872
Check (just download the pdf) a book called SFML Blueprints.
The guy does one stuff he calls Action Targets and Action Maps and it's a really neat way to bind controls to real time actions. It's even re-bindable at runtime.

Not really between Linux-Windows.
OSX is a little behind like most things though. But no one cares about OSX.

My wrapper works just fine between Windows and Linux. Don't have a Mac to test, though.

I skimmed over it awhile ago.
But thanks, I'll check it out again.

Just switch to unreal and blueprints. basically the same, with the difference being that it's been refined for god knows how long now and you can do a whole game without a line of code

(I am doing so right now ;_;)

i have it. but i started coding and now i cant go back. really forget about it. if you want to use it just go full Unreal.

the core stuff is almost done, so i'm gonna have more time to polish this one

Basically what you want to do is have an 'Entity' table registered to Lua (probably as a global). Inside that table, you can have an 'init' function that returns an entity instance.

The idomatic way to do this is fairly complicated; to implement it properly you need to understand how metamethods work (specifically __index) - read the manual.

Once you've got that down, you simply have to wrap your C++ class in a way that Lua can manipulate it. Should go something like (Lua 5.3): http://pastebin.com/7TmvuTEL

The good news is, if this is too complicated, you can find one of the many libraries built to simplify the process.

>when will i actually start having to code?

Used it entirely to make my android game (Dega Madness), and am currently using it to make my steam game. Honestly, the base of playmaker is really robust, and if theres something you would like to put in, chances are you can find someone who made a playmaker script for it. Yes, you'll have to use some pretty complex workarounds for some things, but I have yet to run into something that I couldn't do without coding.

You NEED to mark down everything that you do properly though, or you'll end up clicking random scripts for awhile until you find the one you were looking to change. I haven't used UE4 blueprints but it looks fairly similar to playmaker.
>>
>>148704237
i already own it.
>>
>>148706401
yea i can't believe how much easier this is than coding. i played a lot of Gmod and LBP so this is kind of a natural fit for a math retard like me.
>>
Welp I'm stuck on that stage where you have a lot of stuff to do and you don't know where to start.
>>
>>148706535
Yeah I used to make a lot of starcraft user maps when I was younger and I loved the system that it used, and when I found out that you can make your own full games with a similar type of system I jumped right on it and haven't looked back.

My only worry is that for some reason the guys at playmaker will stop supporting it and it wont work with new versions of unity, leaving me and my game dev fucked...but I don't think that will happen anytime soon (hopefully). Id like to learn actual programming while I do it but I'm stretched thin enough as it is making everything else for my game.

Is the second value in the LoadBg function the depth?

I will get you on your word in releasing it when it gets more complete.
Probably just dump it into github to let the aggydaggies contribute.

I was trying to do a tutorial but then I realised that it's useless. If I don't know what I'm doing, and couldn't do it myself from scratch, then what's the point in even trying? I'm not going to be able to easily edit the map generator to do what I want, so why bother following the tutorial instead of just taking the entire project as they have it? This is very disheartening.

>Realize that the most fun part of my own game is staring at the cute catgirl I chose for character portrait and reading about her killing things - there's not much fun at all when there's no character portrait

I wish I could draw. Incidentally, does anyone know if there are legal problems with letting people choose a character portrait from their own media? It never gets uploaded anywhere, but I can imagine someone taking a screenshot of their character using someone else's art they set to be their character portrait and getting in trouble that way.

Best way to get better at drawing is complaining about it on AGDG and never practicing/reading a book/getting feedback.

2d RPG m8.
leave 3d for when you have a few FULL games complete.
>>
>>148668678
the worst thing you did to this game was make it 3D
>>

You can split the difference and go for a simple, top-down 2.5D RPG, then work your way up by adding complexity.

Other anon here, I'd go with Unity because it's simpler, but only if you were actually doing 2.5D. Otherwise, I'd go with GM.
