Is there any way to perform arbitrary async tasks in GML? I'm trying to rig up a map streaming system and it'd massively benefit if it's possible, but it seems like there's a small set of very specific async tasks you can perform defined by the API...
>>
>>148527415
Why is the top text pixel shit and the rest uses some shit font?
>>
>>148527331
The problem, I think, with a lot of these ethical dilemmas is that they always establish a bunch of arbitrary rules in order to confine the user to a binary choice - i.e. "You cannot kill yourself". This means that despite being given a choice, the user still feels a lack of agency, which generally isn't a good thing in video games. So you'd have to find a way to work around that.

I didn't mention this in the vid but I think the biggest weakness to your game right now is the fact that you're relying massively on enemies and deadly obstacles and not so much on actual puzzle elements. Bokube is a puzzle game and makes a poor action game so I'd much rather see clever stuff that works my brain than having to avoid death all the time. That I believe is what makes it rather tedious currently.

The good news is that this is only a matter of level design and it looks like your levels are relatively quick to put together.

There is more puzzle stuff, its just that the first world of the game is the easiest puzzle wise, so the other 9 worlds can ramp up as you go. The Easter world you play in the demo has 14 levels and boss, and you only played through the tutorial and the first 4 levels of the Easter world too, so you missed how the puzzles get deeper there.

Though I will look into it some more.

I recommend a complexity ramp up so

level 1: plain movement
level 2: simple obstacles
level 3: simple puzzle

and then increase the difficulty from there, and if it's not too much effort at this point you should probably have your obstacles add timing pressure to your other tasks, rather than be just by themselves, at least to some degree

Racism is what kept us alive until now. Avoiding bears and wolves(maybe not all of them want to eat us!), crossing the street when you see a group of people with a different skin-color than you at night, being on lookout for missing things when you have to work with a gypsy etc. all of these are effects of racism, and they more often than not help you.

>>
>>148532097
Look into Space Station 13. It's compared to a simplistic version of space-DF quite often, though it's a multiplayer game rather than a singleplayer game where you control units like DF.

Drawing from that, some things you could order your dorfs to do could be: medical bay, science research, power generation, station sanitation, mining asteroids for raw materials, atmospherics/plumbing management, fending off space pirates, shielding from/repairing damage from meteor showers, et cetera.

Maybe have a look at FTL as well for inspiration as to what kinds of random events might happen to a dorf crew on a space station.
>>
>>148528776
I understand, but the fact remains that you've put a buttload of action-death hazards into these levels and that's what makes it tedious because you're spending much more of your time and attention not dying rather than actually puzzling.

Sorry, but I think there might be 3 kobold devs then.

Around April, if I'm not mistaken, there were two kobold devs. One with a browser game, and one with a regular game. They both worked on lewd kobolds. They often posted at the same time, so if you are not aware of the browser kobold dev, then you are yet another kobold dev. Besides, your style is different from the non-browser kobold dev's.

You didn't make that music though did you? I mean it sounds amazing. That alone makes it. It's lacking a little visual detail. Like I should be seeing something really fascinating with that music like a glowing nebula or a really cool light show on the space station or just something eye-candy. Also you should add a little "space dust" here and there to enhance the sense of movement through space, and the astronauts should have little joysticks in their hands controlling their jetpacks.

Really hoping that is original music you have rights to.

Oh you're doing primitive modeling too? I wanted to post that for the 3D programmer's art anon in the last thread but he already gave up.

But why? Model is not final but that's irrelevant, what I want to improve is the overall "design". As in how much should the beard cover the face, how "bald" should he be, what color should the beard be, how long should the shirt be, how long the pants, sleeves, etc. I didn't ask how to make a model with less polys and a normalmap.

random between 1 and -1 on both axes then assign it directly like

i dont know how vectors are handled in whatever youre using but you could easily do it with 2d vectors like starting with

Judging from stuff like pic related, I don't think the weight is that off, but I probably might bump it to 180. The character is supposed to look athletic and amazony but not be a huge bodybuilder

>Danielle Scott // 6'2" // 185lbs

Your character is more buff than Danielle there, and weighs less. Either fix the figures to match the figure (which isn't unreasonable, plenty of girls lift) or fix the numbers to match the muscle (a much easier solution and probably the more fun one because big girls are silly looking without getting into SJW or Stormfag trigger territory. Everyone loves a big girl, even if not sexually)

If I have stats and leveling up in my game, will not allowing the player assign their stats make them feel like they're not progressing?

I hate games where you pigeon hole yourself in one way of playing because you assign stats certain way, I much prefer just being able to decide I'm bored of playing a warrior now, I'm going to be a wizard, and not being fucked over because you spent 50 points in STR and 0 in INT.

You'll have to look at the individual licenses of the items. You don't have many options here. Either you start doing art yourself, check the licenses and verify that you're allowed to sell them as part of your game, or you hire someone to do it for you.

Give them very few options instead.

Borderlands had their baddass point system. Basically you get decreasing stat increases so the value of the un-increased stats per level increase over time.

That system has practically no customization yet if you disguise it more than they did players won't really know I bet.

You can even have a randomized stat factor.

Alright, I've got my piece formatted for a 24x12 print with at least a half inch of trim area. Gonna be printing on eSatin paper. The frame I have is darker, so I didn't want to just print on white.

Here's what I'll be printing. Artwork is untouched, just threw some stuff in the background. I'll take a photo here in an hour or so after it's through the RIP and the printer.

You got it man. I've learned that every time you do something you learn from it, whether or not it works. I spent a good four hours the other day trying to get a collision system to work with rotating objects only to find out that the engine I'm using already has a physics engine capable of doing that, and can even make custom polygons with 8 vertices. I have no plans to make the switch in the engine right now, but it's good to know since I plan on sticking with the engine for a bit longer.

Well, make it touch the ground in room view then. Change snap size if you're having trouble

Say your image size is 70 pixels high. But your sprite itself is only 50 pixels high (there's a gap between the feet and the bottom of the image)

That would cause a gap.

Does anybody have any experience with toon/cel/anime shaders like in pic related?

I just want to make cute 3d anime girls because my 2d art skills suck outside of low res pixelshit but my 3d is ok-ish.

I know I need to use a toon shader to make them appear more 2d but not sure where to get a good looking shader from or what engine I should be using.

Pic related is in Unity but the source in all in moonrunes and after using google translate there doesn't appear to be a detailed turorial or a downloadable shader.

Shield has been added. I just need to figure out color for it. The classic shieldcancel is also in just because I could add it.

I've been thinking about how this should work. Currently it lasts short time and can be used to parry enemy attacks. The plan is to make it consume 1 bar of MP per use.

I've been also thinking about having it last as long as you hold the magic button and it would eat up MP over time and maybe consume more if attack is blocked.

Other option is that it would be relic (we still have no idea how they will work, because everyone has different opinions on them, but the concept is that they would change the gameplay a lot by changing existing spells and techniques) and replace the dodge.

The dodge currently works with single button. by default it works like dodge in SotN, so PC dodges backwards, but when holding either left or right, PC will dodge to that direction. I still haven't got used to it, since the double button dodge has been a thing for long time. I've been thinking of changing it to only dodge backwards and change the animation.

The shield animation isnt final, it's just something I did in like few minutes. PC can currently block while in air, on ground and crouching.

Thoughts? Of course if it replaces dodge, then the hilarious shieldcancel won't work and I think it would be sad news for people who likes to speedrun games.

Speaking of spghetti code...

I'm using game maker. I have 2 objects that draw text (one is the grid position and one is the damage). If I change the text position of one object, the other object's text position also gets changed. Notice the top left when I attack an object.

I also have my player object create another object when attacking. It's only purpose is to be a hitbox that appears for one step and if it collides with the enemy object it does damage and creates another object that draws text then destroys itself.

I need to make grid-based movement inside of a spaceship. Since the ship will move and rotate (probably) every frame, I need the grid to update it's position and rotation too. But that's not the problem for now.

How can I make grid based movement with X and Y values stored in an array? I did an array once, but everytime I created a new tile, it went to the end of the array, and if I moved the player to the end of a vertical row, and added 1 to it's position, it'd go all the way up to the second row.

I'm using Unity btw

this is the grid code I made almost a year ago, with the vertical row problem. The player is behind the sprites because I forgot to change it's order in layer

make the array then. then store your location in either x and y variables or store a character in one of the array cells that tells the rest of your code that thats where you are. The rest is just rendering the array into another object that can turn freely.

I assume each tile is its own GameObject?
What I did for my game was, I had a function that searched the scene for walkable tiles and added them all to a matrix, in which the placement of each tile in the matrix was based on its position in the game world. So for example, List[4,3] would return a reference to the tile located at x=4,y=3.

When you place a new tile, have it rebuild the matrix so that it gets added at the proper coordinates.

I definitely think the way to go is a matrix that stores each tile as a reference to the tile object, and at a position in the matrix based on its position relative to the ship object. You should probably also store a reference to the player character's current tile in the player character's object. So for example, the lower-leftmost tile would be Matrix[0,0]. If you wanted to move to the tile directly to the right of that, you could have a function that would take input, determine which direction you wanted to move in, get the current x,y coordinates of the tile the player is currently on, use a switch statement to add/subtract 1 from those coordinates' x/y values, then get a reference to the new tile by plugging those coordinates into the matrix, set the player's transform.position.x and transform.position.y to that of the new tile's, and then add the new tile to the current_tile variable of the character.

It's similar to what I'm currently doing for my tile-based movement game.

Why? I can't see how your code could do that.

Also, is it necessary for the code to instantiate the tiles? The way I've done it, my tiles are placed, then I find all tiles in the scene and add them to an array, then I do
foreach(GameObject tile in tile_list)
MasterTurf.TurfList[(int)Turf.transform.position.x, (int)Turf.transform.position.y] = Turf;

I made my TurfList list a public static list in a public static class MasterTurf so I could access it from anywhere.

Well, it's a nested forloop. Every loop it adds gridspace to x and y, which creates a diagonal line.

Well, placing the tiles would be easier probably. I guess i'll try it too.

You don't seem to understand software development at all.
GMS is certainly Turing complete and you can interface with the OS. So yeah, it's technically not 'limited'. It's about development speed. And for anything beyond the elementary Gamemaker is problematic. Unless you're doing C++ and using Gamemaker to do some basic stuff with your DLL exported code.

not really, i just kinda, made it from scratch

i guess it started off like

"ok, im gonna make a grid and have it span mouse coords to it"

then like

"ok, i will make fuckhuge arrays of sprites that every room will display"

then every room was an object, only one active at a time, with a 2d array read in from the file

hardest part was the placement interface, really, it's not shown in the vid, but it like, loops vertically and shit and fsr getting it down together with the selection looping horizontally was a nightmare

i guess thats what i get for sucking at maths

>Every loop it adds gridspace to x and y
It being nested means that it should progress through all Y values for a given X value, the continue onto the next X value. Given a gridxsize of 4 and a gridysize of 4, the x,y inside your loop should progress through (0,0),(0,1),(0,2),(0,3),(0,4) and then the second for loop would finish, causing the first for loop to loop and start the second one again, this time with (1,1),(1,2),(1,3),(1,4) and so on.

If there's a problem with your code, I don't believe it's the concept of a nested forloop as a whole.

It's not that easy to explain I'm sorry. Go through the different features and look at the alternatives you could have. Sure, you can look at stuff like unity and see that yeah it has more stuff but it's not 2D! If you look for 2D specific frameworks or engines the difference is night and day.

But I'd suggest to stylize the pictures like you've done in the one you just posted, that other one was literally just a photograph.
>>
>>148557675
This is probably very likely.

I think while other systems probably have much better options in terms of flexibility, the draw for me is the cutting of up-front costs. It's already built in a lot of functions I'm going to want to use and would otherwise have to implement myself, which is not an irrelevant hurdle, especially when I already have several years of experience with the system and would need to relearn a lot of things to switch.

I'm never going to argue that, say, C++ isn't better; it obviously is; but it would be a lot of work I'm not sure I'd want to throw myself into, especially being so unclear on where I would actually have to benefit from it.

>both player and enemy units have the same variables, but the value varies from unit to unit
You can set the value of variables for a particular instance of a script via the Unity editor, without changing them for everything that has that script.

For example if I have a script that contains the public variable "public int test = 1;" I can then give that script to both a player GameObject and an enemy GameObject. Then I can click the player GameObject, and in the components window, there will be a little box where you can adjust the value of the test variable, specifically for that GameObject.

>every unit will have a different visual appearance
In one of the enemy's scripts, have a function that sets its appearance out of a list of possible appearances either randomly or based on some criteria.

Have a "Unit" class which shares the same variables. Make "Player" and "Enemy" classes which inherit from "Unit". Write any methods that both will use in the "Unit" class, and call them whenever you need them.

OK, every time then

That's quite an unreasonable request.

possibly, PhysX colliders must be convex, unity can generate a convex mesh from a concave one, if you mesh combine multiple smaller colliders and tell unity to generate a convex collider from that, it should do it

don't know if it will work and you are probably better off using multiple colliders so that you can have concave collision

I've been posting progress here for 3 weeks now, and I barely get answers.
Those nodevs are afraid of real progress.
>>
>>148563712
This is just about the worst place to ask for debugging help. Try stackoverflow or any of the plethora of other game developer communities
>>
>>148564768
I'm never asking for help around here, it's pretty useless. However, it's sad to see shitpost getting more answers than actual game development.

The power of unmoderated anonymous communities

honestly lone progress posts just get drowned in the noise, I didn't even see it until you linked it

the people who get lots of (you)'s on progress post repeatedly and tend to have more than an editor window and some code

this would include diagonals though

Did you watch what he posted? After the first 2s, it's actually looking like a real game.
