Played some demodau gayms decided by a random number generator. Here some reviews for the whodevs.

>You are a torpedo AI

This is actually a lot of fun but I only downloaded it because I chose games at random. "Don't judge a book by its cover" is bullshit. If it doesn't grab attention people won't download it/buy it. Consider making a better intro/cover.

>Vampires bit

Absurdly cute and the graphics are wonderful, but the gameplay itself felt lacking. shitty controls, easy to get stuck, lacks variety. It felt like a basic pacman clone with a cute girl. If the controls were cleaned up, levels actually had some variety, and there were actual powerups or something it could be a better game.

>Rocket Xeno

Opposite problem of Vampires bit. Gameplay is fun and hard mode actually took multiple tries to beat as hard modes should. Interesting mechanics and I can see this selling on Android with more polish easily. Problem is the game lacks character, and some of the graphics like the background and explosions are poor.

>Ball Run

I'm guessing this is a sandbox game since I couldn't see any real goal. In which case the concept is alright but the controls are horrible. Consider defaulting clicking on an object to making it move that object. The UI as it stands is very unintuitive.

>Clean slate

No idea what I am supposed to do here buddy. Consider adding a tutorial or something as this just feels like random code using default unity physics.

>Clarent

This is awesome. Keep doing what you are doing m8.

Hey senpais,
Still getting started with Gamedev, watching Unity tutorials the last couple of days, mostly these guys http://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/topics/2d-game-creation under live sessions.

It's exciting when I see how simple adding colliders and importing assets is, but then when it comes to movement or anything else they open up C# and start scripting.

Even though I'm doing my best to pay attention here, I feel like there's no way I'll ever be able to remember all of these variables/Terms and how they interact with each other.

Should I just be looking up all of these and staring them down til I understand them? It's worrying since I'm not sure what the best way to go about learning the scripting side.

So far I've been making checklists of things that I really don't understand as I go through videos.

Any help is appreciated.

Its purpose is to make an event invokeable easily, but still give the class the event sits on control over how it wants to react. The event is invoked, which triggers a handler to respond, which fires off an a coroutine (for if theres any async need).

It just feels like a lot, despite being wrapped in #region.. thoughts?

>>148491463

You learn coding by doing it.

Alternatively use gamemaker and follow the tutorials. Gamemaker is a good intro to programming as the language is simplified java with a much lighter curve. Then once you master GML c# may make more sense.

1. most everyone here is using Gamemaker or Unity. Unity android export is shitty. Gamemaker android export is good but costs $$$.

2. It's way harder to design a good mobile game since you are limited to mouse/touch controls.

>I don't want to provoke you or 'bully' you, I'm just really curious about these choices.
Your questions are legit, no problem.
I will write a full answer, and so there will be several posts.

>Why is there so much references in the speeches? Many of them are memes, and I don't understand why did you put them in?
>Especially at the intro scene. This could be a very trippy, even thought provoking opening sequence, but the immersion just breaks with those lines.
God is a Cube is a puzzle game, which means that it's very hard to tie the story to the actual gameplay. In a puzzle game, you are supposed to follow instructions, and the way you complete the level usually bears no meaning.

I made it so everything is a lie.

You are following instructions. You are rewarded with golden cubes. But by doing so, you are accomplishing what people who control the instructions want you to make.
After a while, you discover that you can not just gather golden cubes in each level, but you can avoid them. But to do so, you need to learn the rules and the gameplay by following the instructions.

So you will have to first collect all golden cubes to learn how the system is working, to make it like they successfully programmed you to follow the instructions. That's your first playthrough.
Then, thanks to what you learned, during your second playthrough, you will be able to find the secret paths in each level and finally break free to get the true ending.

That's what I mean when I talk about tying the scenario and the gameplay. In a game where you are supposed to follow instructions, I need to make it so following the instructions itself is part of the scenario. So not following the instructions is also part of the scenario.

Mobile games are pretty pathetic imo

Besides, they don't earn any money for devs. It's a race to the bottom. Low quality games earning low revenue which creates more low quality games.

I think being able to build the game visually in unity is really helpful, when I tried learning C+++ and C# before I never really got to anything visual, and I assume it's all done with number calculations anyway if you aren't using an engine.

(I mainly just made simple calculators and never anything of value :x , So hopes are high with unity)

Now what about this opening video? Why so many memes?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgFy0Xkz2xw

Remember the rage you feel when you see one of those shitty video game translations? And the even greater rage when you realize those translations are voluntarily censored or manipulated by people who want to push an agenda? And the even-even greater rage when those people are trying to look like they are your buddy because they use some maymay?

In God is a Cube, there are only cubes. In order to convey the feeling of betrayal, I have to use a way to make you feel the betrayal.
"Something is wrong with this cutscene"
"Why those sentences?"
"Why those memes?"
The true dialogues are in fact the little symbols above each line. They are voluntarily badly translated. Finishing the game for the first time will give you the true meaning of those sentences.
By the way, the opening cutscene shows several 3D structures which will be used later in cutscenes. Those cutscenes will start like abstract scenes, and will become more and more concrete.

>I also don't understand the girl. She is cute, but she does not match the rest of the game.
A Mr Tutorial (or Miss Tutorial) is not part of the game. A Mr Tutorial is using words such as "Mouse" or "Keyboard" and those words bear no sense in the world of the game, no matter the way you use.
That's why I want this character to be disconnected from the rest of the game.

This character is also a meta-element of the story itself, as a way to convey the instructions you are supposed to follow. It's an element conceived to be both appealing to you (she is cute) and yet making you feel like there is something wrong (she doesn't match the rest of the game).
The game will go further than the game content itself, as it will contain some criticism of the society. And this criticism will be partly expressed by the game element which is not really part of the game itself, this little girl.

Do not think I'm revealing everything. The game has actually quite a lot of level of readings, and is connected to a lot of other theories and principles. See pic related.

You learn the concepts, it's totally okay to forget syntax. This applies to both Unity and coding in general.

I haven't used Unity in a year so i'm having to remind myself of a lot of things to work on my game (printing to log, collisions, triggers, movement, mouselook, graphics, raycasting, scenes, pretty much everything). Google is your friend.

When you're just about done and to the point where you're squashing the last round of bugs and cleaning things up.

How can I achieve player rotation in unity with a virtual joystick?

This is what I want to achieve: https://youtu.be/WFbOcqvHK6c?t=434 and this http://hastebin.com/otuzoyohud.avrasm is my virtualjoystick script (intended for android/ios touch screens).

The virtualjoystick's movement works perfectly (just not the rotation)

Wait are you serious? IMC actually does that?

What kind of insane level of incompetence could posses a company to think that would be ok. "Oh we don't want to have real servers lets use proxies and no one will notice the 500ms input lag caused by them!" Their ceo actually has to be retarded.

Make the profile helmet extend forward. Either just the chin out by 1 pixel, or jut the front of the visor by 1 pixel. Move it so the chest and the visor are not the exact same location either.
It looks stiff.
Profile boot should be flat on the ground. Rear boot is unclear, idk how to fix.
Kneepads are clear from all angles, gj.
Usually I would say too many shades of gray (lel XD) but here it works. Try cutting out one or two shades and seeing how it looks.

Yeah not sure how bad they had been with other games before, but they went full retard with tos.
And that's nothing compared to other fuck ups, some weeks ago they got into maintenance to send some items to players, as soon as the server got up it crashed and they had to go into maintenance again.

I suppose it's the same idea as googling for windows problems. When I look for code stuff though it's usually someone saying "Use this Code instead of what you did" and people debating on what's better, rather than just breaking down the problem.

I don't ever want to just copy paste someone Else's code, I feel like I learn nothing from doing that and the more I build upon that, the more lost I'll ultimately be when something goes wrong

Ren'Py is pretty decent if you use the out-of-the-box shit.

Yeah it's a good idea to try to break things down step by step and understanding it instead of just copypasting it. You don't have to understand everything in detail though.

The beginnings the hardest so just hang in there. You're always gonna remember something from the tutorials you're watching/reading.

What do you guys think of a game in an artstyle based on 3d N64 shit? Like Majora's Mask or OOT style. I've been planning a game that's similar in gameplay to zelda games but with less combat/puzzles and more exploration, and I was gonna do that shit 2d because 3d tends to take forever. However I've got more experience in 3d, and my experience comes from modding shit from the early 2000s, and I can pump out assets in that old N64 low poly low res texture style quicker than 2d stuff. The shit I can pull off looks quite a bit like the vintage stuff, unfortunately I can't tell if that style has aged well enough to bother? A lot of people say it looks like pure shit. If I was gonna do fancy high res carefully hand painted textures and stuff and make it look good in that sense, there is no way I would be able to get the game made, so it's either this or 2d.

python's syntax is different from most languages, unlike C++, meaning it will be more difficult to understand the programming syntax of other languages
python is simply too easy, meaning that you rarely have to code any algorithms or do any work since the community encourages gratuitous use of import

i would also like to add that C++ just isn't as difficult as people make it out to be, and considering how many benefits you have to learning it as a first language, you would be a fool to choose something as disimilar as python

not saying python is bad, but as a first language? nope

>>148502051

What do you think of this battle mechanic?

Players draw cards against the opponent. Each card has Attack, Guile, Defense, and Suit.

High attack on the card means you hit hard. High defense on it means you defended well. The suit dictates the type of attack (right punch, left punch, right kick, etc).

I never use filters in here, except when we have threads like this. It's not a case of ignoring what you don't like or not, when you have some idiot who can genuinely waste 500 posts in a thread with his bullshit -which was proven that time when the mods deleted everything in one of his hard rampage-, you're getting tired of having to visually filter everything so you use the filters to help you.

Besides, look what's happening now. I'm also part of the problem for talking about it, but this thread is clearly going to be bump-killed by this drama. Again.

Sorry for the late answer, anon, and thank you for the compliment! Yes, I'm planning to do just that. I have a Prince of Persia clone in mind, nothing too special, maybe like Tomb Raider in 2D. Maybe next time I won't go this way, since it'll be a lot of work to animate this, but this is my very first attempt at actual 'art' and not cubes and circles, and for now I'm not feeling confident enough for going right at pure pixel art. You see, this was actually drawn at high res, and then I scaled it down and did some after work with the pencil tool.

>Since the eighteenth century, there has been in circulation a curious story about Descartes. It is said that in later life he was always accompanied in his travels by a mechanical life-sized female doll which, we are told by one source, he himself had constructed 'to show that animals are only machines and have no souls'. He had named the doll after his illegitimate daughter, Francine, and some versions of events have it that she was so lifelike that the two were indistinguishable. Descartes and the doll were evidently inseparable, and he is said to have slept with her encased in a trunk at his side.

Sometimes you pursue a hobby in your younger years with an energy and drive that you completely lose over the course of growing up.

You stick with the abilities your younger self provided to you because you rationalize to yourself that "You've already spent so much time doing it, so this must be what you want to do," but you just don't have the energy to get through being shit at some new hobby.

The reality is, that there's no way to be completely sure this is what you want to do, and you may spend most of your life chasing something you didn't even really want. The only way we have of discovering if we're on that path is to try new things, and that's something we just don't have the energy to do.

This is the essence of nodev.

Code either work or doesn't work. There is no subjectivity. The code will always behave the same way unless you change something. This is relaxing to the brain because it is absolute. It's not like talking to girls or cooking, those activities are not absolute. You can say the same thing to two different girls and have two different behaviors; heck you can say it to the same girl at two different days and have different reactions. With cookings if you overcook something it will taste different but it still works, so finding the perfect way to cook something is difficult. This is why programming is relaxing because the absoluteness of it calms the brain. This is also why many form of entertainment are just mathematics. Sudoku, poker, even video games are just math problems in disguise.

However I have to add that even art can be kinda comfy. Not the end results, but the process. You can really get lost into it and the hours just goes by like minutes. Like the guy says: just draw a happy little cloud. You just start to follow or examine a curve, let your pencil follow it. The cherry on top is that listening to music, isolating any other thought helps in the concentration, and you enter some sort of bizarre state.

So in general: game dev can be pretty fucking comfy.

If you're not autistic you should understand what I'm saying dumbass. Your code won't behave completely differently because it had an argument with its sister.
>>
>>148518893
Things don't have to be absolute to be fun or relaxing.
>This is relaxing to the brain because it is absolute.
Not if it doesn't work, or if it takes a long time to develop something that's barely functional. With a drawing you can have a finished product in a day, though you might not be completely satisfied with it. I can't make the game I want in a day, or even a month. Programming can be fun too, I guess, but not for me. It'll only ever be a means to an end for me.

I also hate math, so that might explain why I generally don't find it enjoyable.

Art is comfy only if you know what you're doing. Even when I try to learn a new coding language I'm still having fun, sure I'm going to have tons of bugs but I will eventually fix them with a good logic.

Art just doesn't operate the same way. In fact, I've watched all kind of art tuts out of curiosity and they always reach a point where they say : "you start from here, after that it's all about getting it right". Aka: model the rest of the fucking owl.

In my attempt to make a component based game, I've ran into having to use downcasts from my generic component class to the specific ones so I can access it's data in the systems I have. This pretty much just comes down to personal preference. Art is clearly comfy to many people who have no idea what they're doing: you can go to any art site to find proof of that. It's the same way programming is comfy to people who are not very good programmers. Something just makes them all happy to produce something that they enjoy doing.

If someone wanted to make a song for it I would be happy obviously, but every musician would probably run away as soon as I mention famitracker.
>>
>>148519465
Holy shit, senpai, I start to feel like I'm talking with myself.

The fact I love about programming is that there's nothing you can't do. If you give it enough time, you'll eventually find a solution to any problem. However with art, you can not be sure about it. The destination is never clear. You know when coding that by the end of an article, you'll understand how classes are mimicked in Lua, but with art, you can not be sure that how many hours you have to work to get your stuff done, since it's really just a matter of practice. And that is very frustrating for a coder. Because it's an element in the equation which you can not control. However if you can put that thought away, and just like make game, it can also be relaxing, even if not as rewarding.

I've also noticed this pattern in art tutorials. They hold your hand when it's about circles and boxes, than tell you to draw the fucking owl. It makes sense in some way, since the said owl is just a handful of lines which you've learned how to draw individually, but the process of learning how to actually see those lines behind the owl can be and is very frustrating and first, especially if you are used to fast results.

Art can be comfy too, but in a different way and thus appeal to different people. Of course, people can like both, sometimes in different degrees. Mathematics, science, engineering, video games are all dominated by men for that reason, while stuff like nursing, caregiving and fashion are dominated by women. And while girls play video games, they often go with RPGs (which are easier since the mathematics aren't hidden and have non-mathematic things like stories and characters) while man in fashion all seem somewhat feminine.

And this >>148520161 is the perfect example of what I'm talking about. That's clearly someone fully on the objective side of the spectrum, and because he's trying to view the world in objective ways he has trouble understanding something subjective or understand that someone wouldn't get math. Meanwhile, a lot of people just don't get math because it's so objective, or strict, since something either works or doesn't work, and for them art is a lot more relaxing since there's not rule to follow and nothing is wrong if they mess up the owl, it's just a weird-looking owl.

Maybe I have this misconception because I'm used to programming, yet on the other hand very new to drawing. With programming I've learned that if my goal is clear, with some time, I will find a solution. However, with drawing, I'm still at the state when I can hardly believe I'll break the barrier of programmer art, while an artist may feel the other way around.

I know you can not tell how many time you'll need to get your stuff done. However, with coding, I know that I will have it done at some point, while art is still seems to be magic.

New update to Bokube will release tomorrow afternoon (uploading on my poop internet). Change log (but there is more changes you'll see later).
-Slowed Down Boku's movement speed for hopefully better control feel.
-Making sure every goal has grass underneath.
-Added a Skip Button to the story part of the game.
-Add more music tracks to the silent opening and main menu
-Made a proper demo ending
-Slow down the rate of fire on tank/cannon projectiles in certain locations
-Remove torch and lights lens flares.
-Fixing it so the biting enemies stare at Boku as they move.
-Made dying when you fall much quicker so you dont get stuck in the air for too long.
-Added "special thanks to AGDG" hidden in the game.
-Cursor red laser-pointer bigger to hopefully help players realize what tile its laid ontop of
-fences on edges to keep player from pushing their cube off a ledge/certain locations.
-Making it so enemies and traps aren't near Boku when you start a level.
-levels with camera fixed will be pulled higher so you get a better view of tiles.
-removing certain spinning axes from 4 axes to 2 according to the level and location.
-Adding the daggy cat's hidden locations every 5 levels.
-Added eggs to dirt of each level that matches levels color tones (besides the tutorial).
-Made the shield actually break your puzzle cube.
-Adding Controls in the pause menu when you hit ESC
-Replaced all Spinning axes with rocket spinning axes and not spinning blade
-Adjust Audio levels for certain sounds
-Polished main menu
-Replaced music since the old music I bought the rights to use from a music dev but hes trying to cuck me via copyright flagging youtube videos/or forcing them to put advertisements for his music, in which he makes the cash of your youtube video/ allow me the rights to use the music in my game, but fuck lets players over by flagging their videos and I won't have that. (Sorry to those who enjoyed the demos original music score).

>I don't get how people don't get math
For me, the hardest thing was proving things in CS theory classes. I could not, and still can't, wrap my head around how you were supposed 5to pull different rules out of your head and basically bullshit your way into proving something. No amount of lectures, tutorials, or TA hours ever got me past that hurdle. Programming at least makes sense to me. Proofs? Fuck that shit.

Can you do vector or hand drawn style 2D in Gamemaker or do you have to stick to pixel art?
>>
>>148521318
I don't want to force players who have played through the demo/game to go through a story section again with how grueling that can be if you already know what happens.

Not only that but people who skip the story without ever seeing it is apart of the games meta, as 50% of the story in the game is hidden anyway for the player to figure things out.
>>
>>148520881
Yeah, might just be different points of view. For me, when I look at a picture and I'm unsatisfied with it, I know there are steps I can take to fix that, and if I still don't like it, it's easy to move on and come back to it later. Whereas when I hit a roadblock in programming, I have to surpass it to make anything work. And that can take hours to days to pass, or sometimes even not at all.

Honestly, part of the problem is that so much programming goes into a game that it can be overwhelming. I don't think I've ever really gotten into the meat of developing a game outside of work or back in school, just because I get bogged down by creating systems.

>>
>>148520892
>>148520885
There's definitely objectivity to it, but there's no absolute about it. 1+1 is always 2, but in art you don't draw a perfect circle, you just get as close to it as possible.
If you want to think of it another way, think of exams. When you have to answer math and chemistry questions, your answers are either wrong or right. When you do a philosophy exam or analize a novel, there's a lot more possible answers and your grade will depend a lot on how you communicate your answer to the teacher (and it's a lot easier to bullshit those kind of exams).

>>148520892
The exact formulas are hidden, like the players won't necessaily know how the damage is calculated, but you have stats, HP, MP, exp, etc. all shown in numbers and it's a game of addition and substraction. It's pretty common to do basic maths while playing one, like "This boss hits me for 300 HP per turn and I have 1000 HP, so I have to heal myself every three turns". While if you compare it to Mario, succesfully jumping on a platform is a math problem where you need the correct speed, acceleration, height and distance to achieve the jump, but the player isn't doing any math when they're jumping or even think about how it's math, they just feel the physics from playing the game and eyeball it.
>>
>>148521598

Drod is a good but its levels are way too big. The central idea of each level could be expressed in a smaller space. In that level for example, there is no reason for the all of those "hallways" between the red rooms to be so wide.

Your clone should simplify level design.

MUTEKI dev here. Sadly I've not done a tremendous amount over the weekdays and I have shit-all to show for Space Jam. That said, ship welding is well underway.

You can now slap an arbitrary amount of garbage on your ship and it will behave as if it were part of the ship to begin with-- i.e. it severs just as cleanly and there's no additional lag. I still need to figure out how to expand the borders of the textures for new parts, then let you copy the HP/lighting/color/armor textures from debris, destroy the debris when you do this, and then I'll have the retardmode Captain Forever I've been dreaming of.

I've also addressed some concerns about the DD9 demo. Namely, somebody noted that the camera was too cramped, so I've made a kind of "half-mouselook" that I think feels pretty intuitive but which may nauseate some players (see next webm)-- still needs some tuning.

Think about your use of color in terms of visual hierarchy

What is the most important thing? the players character, therefore the character should have some color combination/us unique to them and the back ground should probably be darker(or lighter if you're REAL indie) to allow it to stand out.

Carry this through the individual parts of the character. What should the viewer be looking at first? Make that your brighter color and if you want to Art101 it use a complementary color elsewhere in the design. The amount of a color used also raises its position in the hierarchy. look up this word gestalt.

anyway I guess im not really answering your question but picking colors is easy there's no real rules and the ones that are there can be broken no problem. I personally just throw neon everywhere and half the time people just have never seen so much neon so theyre impressed. The real important bits are how you use the color to serve your hierarchy

Also bullets now use linetrace for collision detection instead of any collider at all. This prevents them from 'penetrating' the outer layers of ships even when moving very fast. For shit like large, slow torpedoes, I've still got the option to use colliders.

Additionally, a few people noted random crashes when attacking Ship 1 of the DD9. I was able to reproduce this consistently by attacking the right side of it, but after mucking about and removing all the modules, reloading the textures and them putting them back, the issue has mysteriously disappeared. I have a feeling ignoring this is going to bite me in the ass but I'm going to do it anyway.

I see what you're getting at, but it's a real (fun) challenge to get a decent tune out of 5 or so channels, you really have to use each one to its fullest, certain channels don't have certain features, all that jazz. It forces you to concentrate on the main aspects of what makes a song good, like a simple melody and the like, and if you can't do that you can still do loads of fancy tricks with the editor.
Completely forgot my point
thanks for the compliment though, i really should get back to making music at some point.

Minute details are important, friend.

Feedback is useful, and if people are willing to give it, then why not give it some time. In any case it's always up to the dev to ignore it or not.

No big progress yet, just trying to fix the ships behavior a bit. Unfortunately every now and then the AI bugs out and does weird shit like chasing bout not attacking, attacking while spinning around aimlessly etc. I'll have to figure out why.

The main areas that could use juice, I think, is slightly-higher quality ship/asteroids/UI features, and a much higher quality space background.

Instead of using lines to represent fast-moving stars, maybe make three layers of proper-moving stars and have them move in a parallax?

>>

>you're not allowed to play the game by yourself
I haven't played it myself, but from what I can tell, it wasn't created with the intention of being a single-player game. So sure, you can play it like that, but you aren't entitled to have everyone else playing just assume that you don't want want any player interaction, when the nature of the game seems to encourage the exact opposite.
>>
>>148523652
Those fonts don't work together well, they're too different. Also you shouldn't use different sized pixel fonts in the same screen. I'd recommend dropping that pixel font altogether. BOKUBE is hard to read because of the background and colors as well, maybe give it an outline.

>>148526096
ditch the gradients, go flat instead(or maybe simple shading with just one color, to sorta emulate the 3d graphical style), font doesnt fit imo

Set up rules for your layout, ex: the space between music and effects is different than between music and the title. This causes the viewer to group music and game paused together via proximity, since theyre the only elements in the layout that are that close. So a good rule would be to have an equal space in between each element or make the space between game paused and music larger than the space between music and effects. I think the buttons and game paused are too close to the edge, creating tangents that lead my eye to undesirable spots.

Maybe since the sliders are orange, the other interactable elements should share the same color?

got a question for somebody experienced with game maker studio and shaders.

we're pretty sure those don't run on older systems. what system requirements would you recommend as a minimum for a gms project that uses shaders?
