The best part are the backgrounds. Apart from a track or two, the music is quite bland. The characters don't seem interesting at all, both in terms of visuals and personality. The latter is aggravated by the length of the demo, we are only given a short introduction of their characters, there's not much interaction so they just appear rather simple and boring. There's the "(not)hot guy" - nice, popular with girls, yandere route (spoiled by the end of the demo); the "old man" - mom's classmate, apologetic oyaji route; the "vampire dude" - pale megane, he's a dickhead, nothing else to say; and the "cool dude" - has a sister and the best interaction with MC.
MC makes cute expressions, dyed his hair, can fight thugs. The writing gets weird when it comes to describing people, image related.
Hopefully the system gets fixed. You can't save, pressing load before you get to the automated save point removes the sprites, there is no backlog nor other standard vn options, not even basic audio/video options. You only get to chose the resolution and windowed/fullscreen at the start up (also graphic quality, but that's useless).

If anything Tooya's route was sending the message that escapism is its own type of happiness. Not to mention that ending with Sayo reaching Gensoukyou is the dream of any true and loyal waifufag.
Outside of his crap backstory Ao was easily one of the better characters, or at least stood on his own as one the most without the plot. He had interesting opinions on topics, had a good balance of being stoic and cogent, but honest and receptive, and was the only one who didn't immediately jerk it to Sayo. Also I pin his fixation on becoming a shinigami more on him wanting the happiness the shinigami got than actually wanting to be one. He himself just doesn't realize it until the very end.

I agree with some of your thoughts but it sounds like you went into StS just wanting fluffy husbandos and got a nasty surprise.

I don't think he's a terrible character or anything, he does have some interesting ideas and his 問題ない attitude was often amusing. But he was stuck up, his development was moving at a snail's pace and his backstory only made it worse. And even at the end the whole people are happy he recommends them good books but he still barely talks to them felt so awkward and tacked on. Sayo's case was kinda cliche but at least it evoked more emotions since I felt really bad about Shirayuki. It was also pretty sweet of Sayo to keep calling her mother despite the text insisting on writing stepmother. Too bad her voice was so grating. And yeah you're right about the shinigami since he obviously only wanted to be that certain book's shinigami so he could find his own shoujo and stop being so damn lonely.

I don't feel I was looking for fluffiness and I don't hate the game or anything. I really loved the atmosphere, the art and color palette, the soundtrack, the structure and the side characters and stories. I just could never come to like and care about Sayo and Ao and since they are the MCs that's a big problem. Also although the fantasy layers were utilised really nicely to hide and then present the truth in the end once the magic is gone you are only left with the mundane truth and I'm not interested in that unless it's clear from the start. So let's just say the last/main story makes for a nice book but it's not for me.

That's a real shame since VNs are the rare medium where it's easy to pull off things like this. You had Hinase and Tooya's unconventional brand of happiness, and Nanaki and Ao's more conventional kind. All had their own themes and outlook that weren't suddenly negated just because of Ao. I personally liked Hinase, Nanaki and Chiyo all more than Ao and still had no problem with him being true route. As long as there's some plot, thematic or character reason why the true boy is the true boy I'm fine with it 9 out of 10 times.
Heck I'm pretty sure the only thing anywhere saying Ao is canon is the atogaki. Niisan was all over promo material too and even in interviews the writer said she purposely wrote Shinigami to Shoujo(the book)in a way the shinigami Sayo chooses could be either.

Sayo was the best character but I doubt I'll change your mind on that so I won't touch on it. Shit taste for not liking Kana Ueda though. The contrast between Sayo's calm, almost robotically perfect tone at the start to how emotional she got in the last two routes was top.

But the atogaki leaves you with a whole lot else to ponder. Nanaki was the reader. Him having no memories from around the time he was the same age as young Sayo(when the story began) = him representing a reader from the moment they start a book? Nanaki choosing to continue reading Sayo's story possibly reinforces the "escapism can be happiness" theme since Nanaki seemingly gave up his previous life for it. Was Sayo's ability to suddenly see the same supernatural things as Nanaki her becoming subconsciously aware of being in a story? Did those supernatural things represent literary devices or separate plotlines that only readers would be conscious of? Did Tomoe's "sister" scissor her for days after that round of tonsil hockey? So many questions.

You should read Taisho Alice. I'm curious if you'd like what it does more or less.

Yeah I do get what you mean. Like I said I think Ao and Sayo fit the best so I'm fine with this being true route. I just don't like their personalities, there's something that rubs me wrong about them. I won't go on about Sayo either though since we're obviously on opposite sides. As for canon I guess it looks that way because cover+order+atogaki. And for me it's because as much as I like nii-san I don't want it to end on an imaginary happiness. I'm bad at explaining myself but since mine is already that because this is a game I want the MC's to be real real.

Atogaki's reveal about nanaki really threw me off. But I guess it did explain how he knew everything and it was a pretty interesting way to add the reader to the story. I figure Sayo was probably a bit aware like how with Hinase she know she has to rewrite the ending and the book has to close there. And with nii-san she's fully embracing illusions so she's going through all the countries they visit in the book i.e all the events/stories in the game. And oh man Tomoe really looked like she was getting dragged into a different kind of cage this time.

I saw some spoilers so I don't think I will. If it's a game especially an otome I don't think I can derive much satisfaction/pleasure from it was all a dream/it was all in your head twists

I consider those as part of the main story. They're a nice way to add some romance and cute stories next to the plot.
The plot itself first has a long common route (which means no individual interactions) and then splits into compact routes that sometimes can't be interrupted with scenes like that, so I think those stories are a relatively good way to add fluff.

But to be honest, I did really like any individual routes except one up to now, thanks to lacking romance and stupid drama in that one route.
I don't see how this is called a nakige, except if the finale is really amazing (which I doubt).
