a game where you're in a car crash so you have to walk to the next town but then you realise you're in a coma from the car crash and you die and go to hell and the final image is of the protagonist flayed and crucified upside down in a vision of hell accompanied by tortured screams and the quote "And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell"

While making the spiders i gave them a simple bite attack but then i thought... what is like the worst this on this green Earth? .. a spider.. who can jump.. which also makes them harder to kill, since they move much faster when they jump at close range. Now i have to give them some creepy spider noises to play as they attack.

alternatively, you find libraries that do all the things you want to do and just code a bit of glue to stick them together and then make your levels and music and such

Maybe there is some kind of consensus on voices for smart scientists guys.

I asked for someone which voice sounds like Otacon (and Snake for the other guy).
>>
>>148458079
Well you have a null pointer exception. That means you're probably calling a function on an element of your arraylist that isn't there. Check to see if your arraylist contains anything at all, and then see make sure that you're not calling a function from an index that is greater than the size of the arraylist.

>Did you advertise the greenlight page? Or did people just find it themselves?

I put a lot of effort into some of the art, such as the logo (it's the one million nanomachines animation) to catch the eye of greenlight users.

I made a few posts on Leddit. I got 14 / 15 / 16 / 0 upvotes on my different threads, that's pretty low.

I posted a news on my Facebook page with 170 subscribers. I reached 753 people (counting personal facebook).

I sent a newsletter to my 38 subscribers, and a mail to my 266 forum members (no one post on my forums). Don't know how it worked.

I asked my friends to come, vote, and leave a message. I saw 5 or 6 of them.

I made an OC for agdg (nanomachines writing AGDG), I posted on IRC /#mcg/, and also on the agdg steam chat. But I don't know how many people came to the greenlight page.

I didn't contact any press or Youtubers, so there is no press or Youtubers who talked about it.
I still have a few stuff under the belt, such as the one million nanomachines timelapse, and the online demo to put on Kongregate / Newgrounds.

I started by offering $35 (33 lines) and $15 (11 lines), as there are only a few lines. But it was surely too low for someone to do a job, so I offered $50 and $25.

You are right, that's a risk. But the two characters from the trailer are not in the game.
There is only one character ingame and it's Cube Chan. If I had to voice her, it would be after all her lines have been written (and after choosing which lines would be voiced).

Other character(s) are cubes / robots, so their voices would rather be made with electronic sounds (maybe not up to a Banjo Kazooie point, but it gives you an idea).

They are literally reading sentences from a paper line after line. That's the problem with delayed time recording. Snake is doing the same, but as his role needs less emotion, it's not a problem.
I could have done live coaching, but that would have been far much work (and it's not always possible to do that with some actors) (and I wasn't sure I could get something far greater).

There is a minimum amount to pay.
Professional actors (the ones you know working on cartoons) are payed something like $5 per line. But they usually record in studios, not at home.

Everything is expensive. Especially if you want quality. I have the chance to not need to pay a lot of commission, just voices, music, and a few art. One man army FTW.

Look at the mp_grid functions. GM has an entire pathfinding system set up for grids, and you can even specify open/closed cells and such.

Write up some code to detect when the enemies are snapped to a grid, or restrict their movement to purely grid-based step sizes.

This'd be a good starting point.

Just daydreaming about gameplay. Basically, all eight or nine fortresses would include these basic elements, and then each have several gimmicks of their own to make the overworld gameplay inbetween battling enemies more fun so it's not just you running from one room to the next. But nothing so compartmentalized or cumbersome to seem like filler. I have the gimmicks for one fortress figured out so far, now I'm trying to brainstorm stuff for a fort with a chocolate motif. Symmetrical, blocky, strong-looking. All I've come up with so far is a field of mud surrounding the castle itself that slowly reduces HP as you walk through it. It's been fun.

I got some widely varying estimates on how much it would cost to hire someone to draw a static image in the style of this one. /ic/ told me I could get someone to draw 300 of 'em for a few hundreds of dollars which really seems astronomically low. Even at $900 that's 3 dollars an image. Unreal.

Well, that about does it. I just had to scrap a project because the fucking programmer decided to be a goddamn baby on skype and DELETE FUCKING EVERYTHING because I didn't want to play League with him and instead I wanted to focus on gamedev. It's done, its over and I've wasted literally hundreds of hours on Famitracker and Gimp2 making assets for this shit.

I can draw and animate well enough to get what I'd like to see from the finished thing without needing help, except maybe with making the sprites pop and giving them as much clarity as possible. I've looked through pixeljoint stuff before. The issue is that I can't code for beans, so what I'd like to do is pay someone to do it after all of the game's art assets are finalized, and hope that when I bring that much to the table that a programmer would be willing to help with it, if the money wasn't enough to convince them.

Realistically, how long do you think it takes to draw such a simple picture for a professional artist? Think of it as paying by the hour; you're paying 3 dollars an image but if they can make 10 of those in an hour you're paying them 30$ an hour.

>How much time do you expect them to work on this?
I really lack any sense of scale when it comes to artwork. I don't know how long making such a piece would take, nor how long it takes to actually think up what to draw based on the name of a card and a vague, short description.

>How much do you value their time?
Let me put it like this: I literally only have $1200 and I very much hope I can use that money to pay someone to make the required art assets for my card game. I figured that if I go super minimalist it might actually be feasible. If it is not my only option is to find another human being who is willing to collaborate with me. If I am to be honest I'm not seeing that happening.

It's gonna be a while, since there's like eleven main areas I'd like to have for the game, so that means I'd like at least ten enemies for each area (and ten different enemies for each area that only come out at night and are tougher). So I have like 200 more enemies I'm scrambling to design, and in order to make them fun to fight I have to come up with the exact movement of their attack patterns to keep it tricky and exciting. Which means that each enemy, ideally, would have two unique attacks. And then for each country, the fortress, main big city, and outdoor field areas have to feel different from each other. I have to spend a lot of time on these because it's the meat and potatoes of the game, the story really isn't meant to be much.

I've been assured that doing these battle conditions would be manageable in that the overworld can have an invisible layer that triggers a battlefield based on where you're standing on that grid. So there are normal battlefields as well, but I wanted it to actually matter where you were on the map when it came to battling, as well as to give you advantages and disadvantages based on your skills and the risks you want to take. There's too many RPGs where the overworld is just totally inconsequential and the only interaction you have with it is to walk on it, and there's no weather. Different conditions for battles keep players interested, on their toes.

>Haha holy crap what did you write to those newgrounds guys to get them so pissed off on you?
>"Your audition was the worst fucking thing i have ever heard.. after listening i had to burn my headphones and go to the ER because my ears were bleeding."?

I actually refrained myself to make funny or sarcastic comments, even when the submission was really bad.
Here are my reviews (copy paste):
>Your Otacon performance has a lot of "parasitic sounds". not true parasitic sounds, but the way your are using your voice. It can heard clearly curing the "snakes !" at the end (you say "snakes-ke-ks !"), but it is occurring regularly.
>Your "I think so too" has some kind of an additional sound on the "I". Though it could be ok for other voices, in your performance, it strengthens the problem.
>Besides, your pronunciation is too close to the reality, it's not the clean (and yet artificial) version needed for a record. By example you say "DYOU think love can bloom". The way you pronounce "something" has some problems too.
>On the other hand, your acting is good, despite a bit too fast.
>I would say that the speed problem caused also the "something" and "do you" problems.
>For your Snake performance, there is some echo.

And for the other guy:
>Your phrasing is a bit strange "like a - movie hero - or - something", "something I REALLY got".
>Also, the "snake !" at the end has many problems.

>I love that one guy "i went to fucking acting college you pleb, you can't talk to me like that!" fucking hilarious
I used a lot of diplomacy and gave them an opening with "cultural misunderstanding". But they tried to make me cave in by publicly shaming me. Usually, a "let's show your work to everyone" is enough to make them flee, because they know deep down they made shit:
>I'm not posting extracts from your submissions because they are yours, but I'm ready to ask for a neutral third party to review both submissions and reviews to see where the problems were exactly.

Guys, the "cultural differences" was the bait for newgrounds fairies, you are not supposed to fall for it.
You seem to think the auditions were incredibly good, and so I was a dick to list all problems like that. On my side, I was actually trying to find enough reasons to not hire someone who seemed to have proper training but was lacking crucial basics.

Well, the second event was only a week ago (July 9th) and I never talked about it here. What about your functioning memory? Or did I talk about 2 events on purpose, knowing you would make a mistake by talking about those two?

Also, where are your screencaps?

>inb4 no you where are your screencaps
Pic related.
Could you point out the problem?

Also, where are your comments? Why didn't you say anything, if truly you were pissed of?
Why did you wait several months to make an accusation, without any other proof than "my feelings"?

I have been part of one of those indie dev community for 12 years, I'm well accustomed to public shaming by twisting words and pretending "things didn't happen this way". So I always keep a copy of all my online interactions.
I also know I'm reaching the point when people will make me quit agdg, for any reason. At least I would like it to be a valid reason.

I wound up reworking homing weapons slightly since I noticed they were targeting the top left corner of an enemy instead of it's collision center. Need to apply the same thing to enemy tracking shots.

But, before I can do that I'm redesigning how I have stages set up so I can use Tiled. Tiled will make things a lot easier to make large stages with branching paths.

I am more angry at the low quality of the bait than the post themselves.

>you are condescending

>you were hurting my feelings
>I have no proof my feelings are enough
>if you don't remember it like me it's because your memory is bad (I'm totally not lying trust me)

I love your game, anon. It's so rare to see a game with this much content about teaching algorithmic thinking, so I'm very happy you are working on it. However, there are some thing I don't understand.

Why is there so much references in the speeches? Many of them are memes, and I don't understand why did you put them in? Especially at the intro scene. This could be a very trippy, even thought provoking opening sequence, but the immersion just breaks with those lines. I also don't understand the girl. She is cute, but she does not match the rest of the game.

I don't want to provoke you or 'bully' you, I'm just really curious about these choices.

I like it, personally, but I can not say anything constructive about it, since I think it's fine as it is.

It isn't heavy for a pixel platformer. Hotline Miami has a similar soundtrack, and it fit the tone of the game perfectly. So if the game is in sync with the music (or the music with the game), then there's nothing to worry about.

devving with depression is hard. don't feel bad about being unable to do things, your brain is in real bad shape for doing creative stuff. you can't run a marathon with a broken leg, now, can you?

my personal depression tips: you gotta alternate taking care of yourself and forcing yourself to dev.
also, screenshot every positive thing people say to you, and keep it in a "motivation" folder. any time you want to give up, open the folder and you'll have dozens of people cheering up on you, rpg finale style. here, start with this:

you can do it, anon! and if you can't do it right now, that's ok, you'll be able to do it later. take care of yourself, and keep trying!

Once you start making progress its a feedback loop, for programmers at least. But you have to have a minimum skill level so that putting in effort actually results in progress and not just getting frustrated.

Artists of AGDG: How would you expect a content preprocessor to work?

At the moment I just have a little batch program that you can run on textures/models/sounds etc that converts them to a format that is convinient for the game. This works fine for me as a programmer, but I'm a little worried that artists might not like having to run a program from the command line.

except i gave him actual advice to 'beat' depression and start devving, not "smile and magic your depression away" type bullshit. you're the one who came and said something about criticism out of the blue, as though you can offer useful criticism to someone who has no game. do we just criticize him as a person or what?

and now you're saying "well duh, just get started, with hard work you'll learn that your game isn't worthless" (as if it's the problem), which is also not particularly useful advice. seems like you're the one who doesn't understand depression, really.

i agree about negative criticism being very useful, but it has literally nothing to do with depression.

That isn't a problem - What we artfags hate is when we can't control the assets within the game ourselves.
Programmers are notorious for taking good assets and putting them together disgustingly.

You're better off implementing a lightning system, something like Terraria but simpler, maybe?

The contrast between black and everything else is too harsh. The version you're using on your character looks better than the others using a circle -> ellipse animation but it's still too much. Try making the black a bit transparent

If I remember correctly Castlevania OoE implemented the effect you're using, I'll try to look it up and post an example

lerp is very often abused in unity
if you're using deltaTime with a lerp/slerp function you need to reconsider your approach
Vector3.SmoothDamp is a good alternative for lerping translation, and I mentioned the rotation methods earlier

How can I achieve player rotation in unity with a virtual joystick?

This is what I want to achieve: https://youtu.be/WFbOcqvHK6c?t=434 and this http://hastebin.com/otuzoyohud.avrasm is my virtualjoystick script (intended for android/ios touch screens).

The virtualjoystick's movement works perfectly (just not the rotation)

Sadly I still haven't figured out what to replace if (Input.>>>Getkey(Keycode.RightArrow<<<)) with so it works with the virtualjoystick instead of the right/left/up/down arrows.

protip: any batch program can be used by dragging and dropping files onto the .exe. they'll be passed as command line arguments to the program. just tell your artists to drag the things they want to import onto ContentProcessor.exe.
