Personally, I'm in the opinion that they should only allow trading and battling if you meet with others physically. The whole exploration and walking around is a major charm of the game. If they add trading and battling online, then it loses a major part of it.

Creating sub-gyms based on pokemon types just like in the original games. A fire gym, an electric gym, etc. Give the player to join several of these for an extended period of time (let's say a week) before having to change it to something else. Joining 3 gives your pokemon of that same element certain gym or moveset advantages for that given period of time.

Trainer classes. This provides benefits and customization to your trainer depending on what you choose. Ex: joining team Rocket gives you thier outfit and boosts your encounters at lure stops, becoming a bug catcher gives you a higher chance to catch pokemon at parks, etc.

Either way, they shouldn't go gen 3 until the numbers start to go down. Namely due to the fact that the main target audience for this game are gen 1&2 uber-normies.
