I had Sonic 2 and Sonic Drift 2 for the Game Gear as a kid, I never beat Sonic 2 for whatever reason and I can't remember all that much about it.

Do I need to play the games to understand the comic?

I've only played the classic trilogy and CD so far. Is that enough? I don't really want to play Adventure since I heard it hasn't age well, but I'm considering playing the sequel.

Prior to the reboot I would've said no. Post-reboot the continuity is a lot more reliant on the games, but they're usually good about explaining necessary info if needed. For example, if there's a plot point that hinges on the reader knowing that Sonic and Metal Sonic raced each other in Sonic CD, the writing will usually briefly reference that in the dialogue with an editor's note pointing out it happened in a game.

And every old game shows its age eventually, play them anyway.
