Why are you so butthurt about pirates? They are a small minority, literally less than 1% of all people who play the game (using general statistics, not specific to MHX/MHGen). Once again, you're not fooling anyone.

So are Heavy/Strike bows worth using? They play like a Rapid bow, but have a closer critical range and have innate Destroyer. They seem to work quite well with Adept so far, given that you can belt off shots instantly and it'll be at the right range for a critical hit.

So far I haven't had any issues with a heavy bow. I just slapped together a set of Sailor with Gammoth legs to get Focus, Heavy Up, and Evasion +1 (just because I had an open slot and 9 points in it already) with the Squidward bow (only bow in the game to have Heavy lvl5 and innate Load Up). It's worked out pretty well for me, since I'm clearing any monster in ~8 minutes, but I wanted to see if there were any more optimal solutions.

I am considering getting into monster hunter for the first time /vg/.. is it a good deal to buy the nintendo DS package with it in it?

I am concerned because I haven't played before but it looks interesting. Also, how is the online play? Is it neccesary?

Guild = 2 arts and totally normal gameplay.
Aerial = 1 art and your roll is replaced with a hop. Ramming into a monster with this hop causes you to leap into the air, and you can then do mounting attacks as if you jumped off a ledge.
Striker = 3 arts and a gimped Guild moveset. Focus on spamming arts to deal more damage.
Adept = 1 art and a semi-gimped Guild Moveset. You have innate Evasion +3, and any time you evade successfully allows you to deal a massively damaging attack.

On online hunts if you're playing with random people (which you will be by the sounds of it) you can easily be carried by other players so I'd recommend playing some single player first. There's plenty of guides out there to help you get started, as well as a more detailed tutorial than you had previously. You can safely ignore a lot of the mechanics during the low-rank quests since items are provided automatically and gems/charms aren't as important. Monster Hunter's the type of series that you'll love or hate, and if it clicks you'll have potentially hundreds of hours of fun ahead. If you don't like it then you'll see it as hundreds of hours of tedious clunky grinding-both are valid. Luckily for you the game's much more accessible and immediately rewarding than FU- the PSP games were a lot more demanding of the player. Even if you don't like Monster Hunter the XL bundle isn't a bad price and you can use it to play plenty of other games so I'd say that's worth a shot.

In terms of roles there's not really much. There are blademasters and gunners. Within that there are weapons designed to cut (longsword and insect glaive for example) and weapons designed to break parts and deal KO damage (hammers and hunting horns). Hunting horns are a semi-support weapon since they can provide team buffs. There's also weapons that have shields/blocks and are slower to use, and others that prioritise movement speed and dodging. This makes them all feel vastly different, but there's no exact roles. You'll probably want at least one gunner on your team and a hunting horn can't hurt, but four of a single weapon type is still viable.

I'm always happy to help a new hunter out, it's very simple to look up whatever you want if you know the game already but if you're completely new and try and google for a specific thing you'll be met with a bunch of tables and graphs for different games in the series, it's a lot of specialised information to wade through. There's also a load of basic things you won't see too much in wikis (like armor skills being more important than defense). From my experience once the series clicks you'll want everyone else to get in on it as well, and I'd love to see more people in the west wanting to play.

No, the sword and shield is pretty good both in solo and multiplayer. I don't use them too much but I know many people who use the dual swords too. All weapons are viable (sword and shield actually amongst the best in generations IMO) whereas Freedom Unite was very unbalanced and openly favored certain weapons over others. If you jumped in now you could stick with any weapon type and with a little practice you'll do well.

I mained SnS in MH4 Ultimate, the SnS is (4U and above) designed mainly for:

-mounting, because you can jump down or up a cliff with it

Having troubles picking between SA, GL and HH for my main

Its pretty enjoyable, the main quests are way more varied, shit finally gets harder, but they give you some high level weapons as gift every little story section, its mostly high level bows/HH/and Hammers. New armor type called HS, its not the absolute best, but it can be amazing, especially GS and a few others, you buy the entire set and it only works when its all equipped. 20000z, they are cheap, but none of the skills are active. You have to go into your character equip screen and upgrade them using a bunch of monster parts from everything. So instead of farming 1 specific thing, you can do a bunch, and use the varied parts for the new sets. Still, regular very high level, I think 75, normal armor exists which goes further.

Fucking Elite Hunts dont cost 25 fucking tickets to unlock anymore, only 5. Its a godsend.
New weapons, 8 new monsters and shit.

If you don't jump online and get farmed up quick, the game is about 3 times as difficult. Plus no ENGLISH weapon trees means people like myself, in this case are flying fuckblind. I don't have my tier list of god weapons to keep an eye out for in each category.

It's a similar damage increase to white sharpness if you keep it in green.
