Pokemon Go can be described simply as the Geocaching of Pokemon. Grab your smartphone, get some exercise, catch some mons, battle some people - the usual Pokemon gig.

Basic info:
As you traverse the real world, as represented on the in-game map, you'll occasionally run into tufts of rustling grass. Approaching these will end with a Pokémon appearing on the map, and clicking on it will initiate a battle.
Battles aren't between two Pokémon, though. They're between a Pokémon and your ability to swipe a Poké Ball in their direction. When you engage a Poké Ball, a colored ring will appear around the opponent. These change in size after each capture attempt. Throwing a Ball during a smaller window seems to be more effective, based on our time with the game, but that's a part we're still trying to figure out.
Going near water will attract water Pokémon. Playing at night brings out more nocturnal creatures, like Clefairy and Gastly.
Hatching Eggs: Each Egg displays the number of kilometers you must walk for the Egg to hatch. In general, the more kilometers required, the rarer the Pokémon that will hatch. A notification will appear when the Egg has hatched.
Make sure you have the Pokémon GO app open while you walk. Kilometers walked when the Pokémon GO app is closed won’t count toward hatching your Eggs.
Gyms: Fight at your team's gym to train and increase it's reputation. Fight at other team's to decrease their reputation. Tap your opponent to hit them, swipe left or right to dodge attacks, once one or more blue bars are filled, tap and hold to power up your secondary attack, release when the smaller blue bar fills up. Take over other teams' gyms and put your mons in to defend them.

Yes. Only cap gyms to gain defender bonus, and other than that ignore it and focus on upping your rank. When you're above 15, you can reconsider your position and decide if you want to try a bit of base flipping.
Gyms are good for only 2 things: defender bonus (pokecoins) and xp (from flipping). The former you can only get once a day basically, the latter you need to spend dedicated time sitting at the gym. This can become counterproductive to rank grinding if you aren't also close to a pokestop and catching pokemon.

If you do not run gyms, do not keep potions. If your local gyms are easy caps and you don't have anybody trying to squat in a gym, use sacrificials to keep the damage down if you take damage. Pokeballs. Lures. Essence. Lucky Egg. Concentrate on hoarding those items until you get higher rank.

Sorry for the stupid question, I couldn't find this in the faq.
I caught a Pidgey and a Pidgeot yesterday, and I would like to give one of them back in exchange for candies and stardust.
Pidgey is CP 10 and Pidgeot is CP 14. Does it mean Pidgey has more potential for growth, or should I keep the Pidgeot since it is already evolved?

Movesets matter. CP is only a HP gauge, you still need movesets for the attack. Rank grinding for CP is advised because movesets remain relatively consistent. When you're at the point where your CP plateaus out a little, then you can focus on grinding pokes for movesets.

The optimal pokestop is literally just to find an area with a cluster of them, sit down, and camp. You can try playing around with gyms to get a feel for the surroundings, but if your rank is low don't expect much.

Pidgey will have a higher CP cap than the Pidgeot because evolution attaches a CP multiplier. You can try this by evoing the Pidgey into Pidgeotto and see the results.
Drop the Pidgeot for candy.

Candies from base evolution are used for the whole evolution tree.
So to evolve pidgeys you need to catch'em or their evolved states to get their candies.

If the battling system remains as simplistic as it is, then realistically adding new pokemon is basically just cosmetic, whether it is 100 new pokemon or 500 new pokemon. Also if PVP turns out to be basically the gym battle AI except with a friend that'll be hilarious.

CP cap is tentatively based on Trainer Cap. Highest pokemon we've seen so far is a little over 2k CP. The guy was level 21. Highest in the beta I saw was at 3.4k.
Yes, a bunch of 500 cp pokes can overwhelm a 1k cp poke, especially if the 1k cp poke has a bad moveset.

you can widdle down a higher gym if you can defeat atleast their first pokemon because that will lower their rep and if you can knock it down a lvl itll drop the lowest pokemon out until you just kick them all out

This is precisely what you should do. There's basically three things you can do in this game. Grind, catch random pokemon, or play in gyms. Except you're going to catch random pokemon as you grind anyways. But grinding makes playing in gyms far easier whereas playing in gyms only makes grinding slight faster. So grind first, gym later.

The problem with gyms isn't the grind, it's the horrendus bugs. I'm literally pissing my time away trying to take down gyms fighting in battles the game won't even let me complete when I could be hanging around lures catching pokemon. Even if I have pokemon twice the CP level of the gym's leader it doesn't matter, the game decides to just fuck you over and there's nothing you can do about it
Maybe it's my fault for not picking a more popular team, but I'm sure gym battles are going to be a lot less fun once the game isn't as new and gyms are dominated by autists and powerleveling whales. I mean that's kinda already the case, but it'll probably get worse as time goes on.

in enemy gyms you get a team of 6 to use and fight them all while an ally gym gives you one to use to fight them all but you will either bring rep up or down for winning depending if its your teams or an enemies

Welcome to Ingress. The behavior you described is completely normal. Better yet, since most new players don't understand the limited influence of CP, they'll look at 2k - 3k CP and think "I'll never get there" and probably just stop right then and there.
Eventually the system stabilizes as everyone hits the cap, and Niantic will design updates and caps with these people in mind, after all, most of them are the ones who actually pay and play the most.

You stop rank grinding when you have exceeded the average rank of those around you, or you feel that you can reliably take and hold a gym with the roster you have. 20 is seen as a threshold because it's the last known item unlock for pokestops right now, but there are folks that are already at 25 in NZ/AU.
If your community is at like rank average 10 and they don't bother leveling up much, you can be comfortable in a similar range to stop. Otherwise keep grinding.

I've had the best success in throwing curve balls by swiping with the side of my thumb. As for landing them, it just takes a bit of practice, naturally you need to aim your throws more to the side. It's a tad easier if you use the AR camera as you can move the pokemon more to the side of your screen, I personally don't use it though.

Preferably, you find something like Pidgies to evo with, and push your trainer rank up. As you do, the Eevees you find will start to have higher CP as well. When you evo those, their evos will have higher CP as well. You do this until you feel comfortably in your town/city/suburb or w/e.

If you're playing this because you want to collect pokemon, them having a head start doesn't change anything, if anything it helps you because now there are people who can point out spawn zones and such to you and people who can already put up lures.
If you're in it for gyms, realize that catching up is ridiculously easy IF you're willing to dedicate a large amount of time into the game. If you're not, then just go at it slowly. Everyone will hit the grind wall eventually. It just means that instead of smacking gyms on day 4, you smack it on day 15 or so.
Besides, in practice gym flipping is much more profitable than planting a bunch of 2 - 3k mons in gyms.

In gym battles there's a 50-50 chance that the enemy's mon will get stuck at 1hp no matter how much you attack it. A 1hp mon can wipe out your entire team even if it only has half cp compared to yours. The only solution is to force quit the app and try to start the battle all over again. It's especially infuriating because the app is really bad at allowing you to try again, making you log in and out of the app and walking away from the gym to try again later.
I can't tell you how many times I've traveled out to a gym and wiped out nearly their entire team only to get stuck at the gym leader's mon because of this stupid fucking bug.

There's the even bigger problem that realistically the Pokemon you catch have nothing but sentimental value at best. Your starter literally is transfer trash. It's not the Charmander that becomes a Charizard as you travel, it's worth 1 Charmander candy while you grind to Rank 20 and catch another Charmander to evo.
The Pokemon themselves aren't anything special. If the Trainer Rank max continues to creep up, it'll invalidate whatever Pokemon you have until people decide "fuck it we're not grinding anymore" and just stop altogether. But there's always going to be somebody who wants that highest number in the game. Which in turn pressures other people to grind.

I actually do develop indie games so i know how hard something is to make. Nintendo is in a point where they can't really lose. No publicity is bad publicity, in both senses of the saying, and at this point they can still sit back and wait things out to see what happens. If Niantic smartens up and makes a load of improvements, it justifies the original choice. If not, and Nintendo decides to step in to fix things, well, they fixed something that plenty of people see "potential" in, and Niantic is left as bad guys. Lots of people are willing to forget past wrongs if the situation is rectified.

This is nearly exactly how the army teaches you to do land navigation. When I learned it we used a compass, map, and coordinate scale, I wouldn't be surprised if drill sergeants started using pogo while making privates march 16k through the woods.
