How fucked am I against this thing?

I have 2 Ronin and a Landsknecht in the front and a Medic and Troubador in the back.

I get one hit ko'ed even after level 10 Stamina + Immunize and level 5 Ifrit doesn't help.

I wanted to go into this series blind without a walkthrough.I'm tired of grinding and if I can't beat this piece of shit with my current team I'm moving onto EO2

I don't think this is true. The dungeon designs were particularly bad in SMT1 and the encounter rate is high. Plus encounters can link back to back without break in SMT. Not to mention many regular enemies and bosses pack instakills in SMT games. EO has its share of bullshit too, but I'd just say they're different kinds of difficulty.

I already had nerve bullets and multi hit guns, but I still find the dungeon layouts and encounter rates more tedious than EO. Someone already mentioned I should have been using Estoma which I admit is my own fault for not trying.

I should specify I'm not only talking about SMT1, which I thought I got across by saying "SMT games" earlier. Here's my whole thing: I feel like EO is significantly less restrictive than SMT games are. There are SMT (including side games here too) bosses where if you don't run certain setups I doubt you'd have much success. Once you have the proper setup it's not that bad, but the fact remains there are very limited ways to approach the challenge. EO games feel like they have more viable party setups, where party member changes for particular bosses aren't necessary. I'm not saying you could run 5 troubadours or anything like that, but there are more viable setups on the whole.

If anon just said "EO is like DS" I actually wouldn't object. Both games allow you to find what works for you. Lots of builds are viable across the whole game. The early difficulty is also what drives people off in both games. I just don't think EO is the "dark souls of SMT".

Right so I'm new to the EO series and didn't see any newcomers guide, which ds game should I start with first? Would EO1 be a good place to start or should I skip ahead?

The remakes are a better starting point than playing the original.
The original is good too, but is way to slow than the new version.
And some things are also annyoing in the original version like 500en for name change, you lose 10 levels if you want to rest a character, max level is 70 instead of 99 and so on.

EOIV is also a good starting point, but this game lack the challenge of the rest.

Just pick whatever, but probably the 3ds games are better to start now.

And if you don't own one, start with EO3, it's the best Etrian anyway.

The earlier you start, the more you'll appreciate the mechanics added in later games. IV is the easiest for first timers to the series to figure out a way through the game, but most of the challenge comes from figuring out what you want to do with your group to make them work(and avoiding roaming monsters on the map until you have ways of dealing with them that usually come later) so you can start from anywhere if you have the patience for it.

The remakes and IV are 3DS games, you can download them off the e-shop, or the usual emulation places if you have CFW. The DS games are DS games, not much else to say about those aside from that it'll probably be easier to find those emulated than 3DS ones.
