It appears that dungeon is not torever.

I have a few questions. Playing Etrian Odyssey 1: Untold.

Am I supposed to avoid these boulder boars always? They're tough and do crazy damage.

Is the game meant to be this grindy? Feels like I have to spend ages crushing small enemies before I can move on to fight the FOEs or the bosses, they just do so much damage, even with the Front Guard activated.

I'm having issues with TP, as I have to just spam normal attacks in encounters until the picnic knight allows me to eat with him again to restore the TP that I use on FOEs and healing in general. Is this normal?

Also, I'm having issues with money, it seems buying new equipment depletes like 1/3 of my money every time, is this normal?

Also I noticed the inn became more expensive(40en->55en). Is this also normal?

You are not supposed to take out FOEs the moment you see them. Take a look in their aura over the map to have a gauge of their level (Blue = Same or lower level than you, Yellow = Slightly higher than you, Red = It will steamroll you)

if i remember right, boulder boars are weak to elemental attacks and resist physical. though like any FOE they're going to be tough to beat if you're just encountering them

not really grindy per se, but as long as you don't constantly run away from battles you should be leveling up just fine. FOEs are like minibosses, you shouldn't be strong enough to fight them on your first encounter

TP cost depends on how many skill points you've invested in your related skill. generally it's a bad idea to indulge to the point where you can't keep up with the cost while exploring. especially at early game where you can't restore TP that easily without returning to town

Ah, ok, it seems yellow at the moment but the issue is having to run from the ones I walk past every time. I haven't died yet but I just wondered if I was doing something wrong.

My issue is that I'm always out of TP after using these skills and have to run back and forth, and it feels like these skills aren't doing much damage at all, only like 75 for a level 2 volt formula on an enemy with >1300 health for example

Foraging skill is a waste of a slot in newer games. Usually you should go for passive skills (to increase the effect while keeping your TP cost low) and prerequisites (to open up new skills)

With Amritas my bear tank can use hit taker indefinately and my healer won't got OOM.

Infact Im level 46 and currently on Harpiua. I only tried against her 2 or 3 times, but my DPS keeps running out of TP. Was going to switch my Dark Hunter for a lightning spec alchemist to try and down her faster, but now that I realized I was able to use amritas, I think if I just play conservatively she should be a piece of cake.

It only scales with TEC for skills that don't require weapons, for classes such as Alchemists, Zodiacs, and Runemasters. Other classes that use their weapons for the skills like Ronin and Imperials, all scale off of their attack and STR. Gunners in EO2U have their skills scale from their attack and AGI because bows and guns now scale from that stat rather than STR.

The situation is, I'm slightly overleveled because I never got around to do that quest and pushed further on the 5th strat, and I got a bit cocky and thought I'd check it off my list with after a quick gathering tour.

So I'm lacking items, my party leader is replaced with a gatherer character half her level and the food bonus is a gathering one.
Plus some asshole fucked up the Force on my entire team so I can't use it.

Thankfully I'm in normal mode so I can take a lone worm down without being too concerned during the fight, but it drains the TP on my medic, fortress and alchemist and now I've reached the critical point.

Having trouble settling on a fifth member for my party in EO2U. I have a Protector, Highlander, Medic, and Alchemist. Not sure who else to make, but leaning towards a DH, Gunner, Survivalist, or Sovereign.

Thanks, I'm not sure if I'm using a DH yet or a Gunner, but it's good to know. If I run DH again, it definitely will be another whip DH. I was thinking DH might work well with Highlander since I'd be able to let him use his sword skills even with a whip equipped.

The recommended party is PLASM.
Protector, Landsnickers
Alchemist, Survivalist, Medic

Poison is great for the first 5-10 floors, than it's shit.
Get your Survivalist that "raises chance of preemptive attacks" skill asap.
Never leave home without 2-3 warpwires.
Don't bother investing in the protectors Provoke or F/B Guard skills. They're shit in this game. Just max out their statups, smite, and get the 3 anti-elements to 5 and exactly 5.
Most skills get a huge boost in effectiveness at levels 5 and 10, but only minor changes otherwise.

I really like:
Beast/PalmAlc/DarkHunter
Hexer/Princess

In particular, I strongly recommend putting a hexer in your party. In Untold 2 you can finally see ailment/bind weaknesses, which makes status characters suddenly really fun to play with (also hexers' poison does mad damage to boot). Together with all the ways you can stack the chances to hit with status effects, you can really shut enemies down - to the extent that dedicated shutdown parties so effective as to not even need a tank; it's great (if you know what you're doing).

Beast is a little scarier to use than a standard protector (they'll die a lot), and don't have elemental protection (mitigate-able with grimoires). You can opt out for a protector, and push the alchemist in the back and switch his palms for formula skills. Essential skills: Hit-Taker, Auto-Lick, and Pre-emptive Roar.

I'm inclined to think Medic is a bit overkill for healing if you're using a beast. Princess does very well as a healer - and all sorts of other stuff. Her full-party TP restore is also fantastic for those long-ass stratum boss fights.

It's a little scary, but a lot of fun.

It's because Beasts redirects the attacks to them, while Protectors reduce the damage done to a line (at least in the early levels), but the party members will still take damage.
