First off, thanks for taking the time to review the game. Feedback like yours is very useful.
>>Didn't really know what was happening or what I was doing
This is an issue that has been reported by a few people. I'll add more explanation in later relases

Any idea on what steps were taken to cause that error to occur? Additionally, what graphics card do you have?
Thanks again!

I like the style. I probably wouldn't play it though.
Also I wouldnt call it mspaint style, because it has brush dynamics which mspaint does not have.

repoasting in new thread again, I was asking about how to do hitboxes for tetris, in monogame, anon suggested to make a grid instead.
And how would I do that in monogame? I'm pretty fresh off the boat. Since it's 2d, would I just use an array for the x and y co-ordinates, check to make sure the current block won't occupy a space with a 1, and step down? And if it would occupy a space with a 1, lock the block, and move onto the next block?

Blue squares are the movement range. You can move to any blue square this turn.
Red squares are where you can attack. This attack can target the 4 squares in front of the eye.
The squares seems like the least confusing part of this game

Every vote bullying 29 people, that's some efficiency.
>>148039307
With Gamemaker, you're eventually going to find it very difficult to do any 3D, any multiplayer, and actually just proper object-oriented programming. It's good for small prototypes though.

Secrets I didn't find:
0:28 because it was outright suicidal (but I suspected there would be something)
0:17, 0:50 and 1:13 because they were way too fucking obscure
Sord/Aggy Dagger is even more obscure but it's pretty funny. Is there even a way to follow the trail of blueberries to the platform right before?
Gotta agree with >>148039671 too
Does libgdx work with Scala?
>>148039517
>if they would have to pay for it
Nope, .NET Core has been released under the MIT license, so it's "more free" to use now than Unity's version of Mono.
>>148039743
>I'll download Unity now
Why would you choose a terribly buggy engine?
>>148039270
Nope, sorry, they are pretty obscure desu, you should add a pattern or something so people have a vague idea where they can be, like Donkey Kong country, you start in one point but if you decide to check behind you there are some secrets, or those breakable walls.

If you want an alternative to Java for working with LibGDX, I'd suggest Kotlin. If you want to learn about languages with fancy type systems, however, start with Elm (http://elm-lang.org/). You could make a real game in Elm if you don't mind that it's still version 0.x and the devs will certainly break your code before 1.0 arrives.

You can jump to the platform from below, it's just at the right height. The trail is there just to point to the fake spikes (which also have a red flower behind them if you look very closely)

Don't be fucking stupid. What's could be wrong about writing a game in Scala? Loads of people are using Java, and Scala can be written as a better Java. Or it can be written like a functional haskellhead language. Or, the middle path, the Scala way that takes from both.
The only bad thing about Scala is the compile times.
Anyone still need feedback?

No, fuck that, Kotlin is nowhere near as used in real projects as Scala.
Elm is a really cool and promising new language though, really easy to get started on, really safe and fun to write. I really wish I get to use it in the real world some day.
>>148040935
If you actually believe you have a million dollar idea you're an idiot not to make it. Learn as you go, make it solo in three years if that's what it takes, it's still 300k/year salary.
But your idea is shit and you know it, otherwise you'd be off earning that one million.

Jokes's on you though, I have actually already MADE my game, and now I'm wanting to make a sequel! I have seven lined up actually, since it's going to be a full series. The first ones are going to be small APPS sized games for mobile, and will be prequels but teh two sequels are much, MUCH bigger and will have 10x the skills of the first ones and you can level all your stats to 99! it will have more skills than Kingdom Hearts 2!

>>148040942
>What's could be wrong about writing a game in Scala?
Porting to mobile will suck.
>The only bad thing about Scala is the compile times.
And the increased GC pressure if you do moderate FP. And hunting down bugs if a library you use turns out to be full of symbol noise (you have check in advance). And the occasional inscrutable compiler error. And implicit conversions. And the mediocre IDE support.
>>148041103
>Kotlin is nowhere near as used in real projects
That's true enough, but JetBrains use it to develop Idea and the third-party feedback online has been positive so far. Considering that it's only moderately different from Java (declaration-site variance is the biggest difference), it is less likely to have a fatal flaw that only becomes apparent later.
>>148041590

(G) works by:
Fire a shot. It moves forward until it collides with a surface, an enemy, or you use the "Weapon Extra" key (Default B) which triggers the shot.
When the shot is triggered it expands and explodes outwards, consuming enemy projectiles and pulling enemies towards the center if they're within a certain size category (the upgraded version hits larger enemies). Enemies caught in the rift take damage periodically, and enemies colliding in the rift are affected by contact damage to eachother.
When the rift collapses after a short time of opening, it performs one last hit for a higher amount of damage than the periodic ones.
tl;dr, it grabs shit, eats bullets, and causes interstellar traffic jams.
***
Gun (E) is an explosive. It fires a projectile that attaches to enemies and explodes after a short period (or instantly if the detonation button is pressed). You can stack up to three shots on an enemy, and higher stacks have better explosions. The upgraded version adds a "Napalm/Burning" effect to grant additional damage over a short amount of time (to get quick enemies, or to stack on bosses. Burning can stack, ramping up damage output quickly.)

Like someone else said I really think you should have multiple rows. Even with the notes being color coded having them in separate lanes makes things so much easier; especially since it's not like our keyboards have the keys colored to correspond with the notes.
Also this is probably far in the future but having speed mods would be nice as well, since not everyone reads at the same speed. It'll help everyone be able to time better.

Yeah I think I'll try that sooner or later. It would easier to manage then the code I'm using now.
To be perfectly honest, I like how the game is set up now. I know it's conventional but still. But in the end this was just one of a few concepts I came up with back during Waifu Jam.
I wanted to make a kind of rhythm game with something more. At the time I struggled a lot to get things working and had to change my vision a lot. The result was The Witch and The Dragon. But another idea I had was to make an idol rhythm game where like in Ouendan your performance made the difference on something else.
The idea for the single not line came from this random screen shot I found when looking for rhythm games on Google images to get some inspiration.
So yeah, I will definitely try a 4 line system but I might keep both, maybe as different modes, or maybe have different songs (or idols) use different systems.
Lastly, what do you mean with "speed mods"?

Can't even tell if this is the dev or a false flag memer
I've imagined this 2D action platformer in my head since 2012 and never gone and set it down on paper. I have some story elements which is really where a lot of my "motivation" comes from.
I also have some really neat ideas of game mechanicsno feature creep thoughin my head. However, I'm pretty bad at setting anything in my imagination on paper, don't know techniques and so on. Same goes with art.
Despite that, I want this game to be like Cave Story in a lot of aspects, specifically the gun aiming and real time weapon switching. A thing I wanna have is for example wall jumping.
I'm basically all fresh new to this, I have literally no programming skillsoutside of hacking 3DS stuffand outside some Brackeys episodes. I used to watch him back a while ago, but stopped because functions were never explained properly and there's no "Rules of C/C++" so I don't know how things interact or what their results are.
Basically, where do I start to learn ground up? And is Unity still okay for a 2D action platformer game?please don't kill me because I want an 8-bit style thing,because it's not "ANOTHER 8 BIT INSPIRED PLATFORMER INDIE GAME",I really want to do something productive with my life

>>148046556
it's alright friend, nobody really cares what kind of game you want to make, we're all here for different reasons
I don't think unity is all that well suited to pixelart platformers. you should try gamemaker and look up tutorials, that will teach you to code while actually getting some results.
if your goal is ultimately to make a game I don't recommend learning C from the ground up, it will be a very long and frustrating experience
>>148046123
I think having different modes is a good solution; you won't have to abandon the line since some people might like the single lane but you'll also satisfy people who want multiple lanes.
And speed mods are an option in some rhythm games that let you set how fast the notes go. I mostly play Bemani games but in those the default scrolling speed is set to a song's bpm, and then you can modify it with a multiplier to make the notes faster or slower. Generally as you get better at a rhythm game you'll want to set it to be faster so the notes don't get all clumped up and hard to read, but some people like seeing as many notes as they can at once. More non conventional rhythm games like Ouendan don't have it but since your game has scrolling notes it'd be a nice feature.

So I'm going back to the original implementation of combat, where units deal damage instead of one punching all the time. That version was fun and fast paced, but very swingy and cut off design space.
This unit has no maximum size, can move 6 per turn total, but in increments of two.
Thanks to the anon who recommended Casey Muratori, I read a few of his blogposts and cut out one of the abstraction layers from my game.

Unity has some real good stuff to get you off the ground and running, and there's even a 2D platformer tutorial around. They teach you how to code, how things interact, and have prebuilt implementations for things like hitboxes and shit. The engine itself is pretty powerful, and depending on how much you want to do it may even come in handy. I switched away from it to LOVE because I want to make a simple shmup kinda thing, and going to college for CS it's fairly easy for me to pick up programming languages.
Also start much smaller. Your dream game will come but it's you have to learn how to make a foundation before you build a house.

I have a dumb question. So I'm making a "roguelike", except without procedural generated dungeons. My movement is locked to a grid. At first I tried using stuff like move_toward_point and motion_set, but I kept running into problems. I wanted to try creating my whole stage using arrays or ds_grid. I'm thinking it would be easier to control enemy and player movement when I have the coordinates ready.
Would it be better to use an array or ds_grid? I read in the docs that using ds_grid could slow down my game. I keep seeing people building inventory slots or minimaps with ds_grid, but not a whole stage.

The difference between an ideaguy and a designer is that a designer actually understands the details of the things they want to implement.
An ideaguy would just say "how about a game where you control gravity" but if you asked them to explain exactly how it would function, how the levels would be designed around it, how any of that is supposed to be fun, etc, they wouldn't be able to tell you.
Basic concepts are a dime a dozen, actually knowing how to properly implement and flesh out a concept is important.

Put character movement into its own function(s)/method(s), instead of writing the input/AI code to directly change the character's position, etc. Then, when writing input/AI code, just call the character movement functions. You can do this pretty easily using an entity-component system, but that's not the only way to do it, either. You'd just use the same base movement code for both the player character and NPCs/enemies.
The important thing is separation of concerns: the character movement code handles actually moving the character, and the input/AI code just tells the character to move, rather than doing the work of moving the character itself.

It is a very small project after all. I never really expected anything to come out of it. From the many positive comments I got on here and reddit, I thought it would be the perfect little project to learn the ropes of greenlight with. If it works, great. If it doesn't, I'll go back to work on my interesting projects with actual value. Gauging interest is part of why I'm using greenlight instead of something like itch.io.
Besides, I'm learning a lot of things that will be very useful for future "real" projects, both in the technical and marketing departments.
Failure is absolutely acceptable here.

Storage solution. Allows you to store stuff in a table and access thing easily without having to search through everything else in the tablem by organizing them into certain buckets. Hash code determined what bucket they go in to save you search time. Useful mostly for databae stuff or things where information stays around for a while.

Burnout is the worst.

>>148057650
As an amateur musicbro I think this is horseshit. I can understand how people doing free music would harm you if you're trying to make some cash on it but it's only the amateurs who are going to lose out on money really since the people with good music skills are going to be worth the money rather than getting mediocre music for free. So I say to you if you want to make a living doing your favourite hobby that is of no real benefit to the rest of the world then the very least you could do is provide something people would want to pay for. Also, as others have mentioned, most people making games here are also amateurs who are likely to see very little recognition of their works at all, let alone a single dime so they can neither afford nor justify affording to pay for their music.
Personally I am trying to find projects to compose on for free because I'm still an amateur and I appreciate that paying for music is a big commitment and is only worth doing for high quality music. If you're not already making great music then you ought not to be counting on it to pay for your meals, just as a half trained plumber wouldn't expect to be payed as much and as often as a fully trained and experienced plumber.

I doubt many of you anons are familiar with the typical text parser operations, but after seeing all the submissions for DD9 I was inspired to spend an afternoon learning Inform and pumping out a simple 1-puzzle text adventure for anybody who is interested.

>With an engine perspective, how do i do it better?
Depends. What kind of engine is it? Is it just a framework where you have very convenient functionalities like loading tilemaps and then when you have that you construct your world using that data or is it an engine where you have an entire pipeline and the world is a concept that's decided in the engine?
Because if you think about this on a more conceptual level, right now you're deciding how your world should be specified. Is tetris the kind of game your engine is going to be appropriate for? Maybe you want to not have a super generalized system and decide how the world is defined in your game, but tetris isn't appropriate for that model.
There's a lot of things to think about. But basically what you're doing right now is decisions that define RPGMaker vs Gamemaker, essentially.
I think that since you're doing Tetris right now, just make an array. Make that decision later. It's generally better to write something that uses your engine before you write it paradoxically. Mostly because then you will know what you're happy with. Because you're only gonna write the implementation once, you're gonna use the engine plenty of times.p.s. a lot of people have this idealized view of making their own engine. Turns out you don't really know enough to be satisfied with what you did before usually.
Second answer here is a very good one:

>>148057650
I mean this guy is technically correct.
However this only works if you're in the music industry and you are releasing actual albums under a label.
If you release an album for free you are basically screwing every record company out there out of their (70%+ ) cut they make off your music. So never release something under a label for free. However if you can release your stuff independently do so, for free even. All musicians make the bulk of their money off of merchandise and live shows not off recordings like the did in the 70s and 80s.

Have some kind of selector object that is independent of the both the player and enemy. Use that selector to determine whether the object is player controlled or enemy controlled.
In the character object, have something like this:
switch (character_controller)
{
case 0: <use player controls>; break;
case 1: <use enemy controls>; break;
}
If you don't want to list the controls above, you could have another section of code like this somewhere after:
if character_controller = 0
{
<list of character controls>;
}
if character_controller = 1
{
<list of the enemy AI procedures>;
}
That's how I'm planning on doing mine. There's probably a simpler way but at least I understand how this way works.

So any XNA material is at least almost applicable

Well I'd be pushing my idea. I think handmadehero.org is an amazing resource and you can look for just about anything you want there. I think maybe if you should look at something from that series it's what I posted here:
>>>/g/55511221
As mentioned in the first video that's the first day where they've written the platform layer so he's laying out very simple things about how a game should be and some philosophies about software development in general.
I can't tell you how your game is going to work specifically. I don't know what it's like and I've never written your game specifically. Also what you feel is easiest to work with is probably the best.
I enjoy Angel2D a lot because it's rather straight forward imo. It's pretty much the basic stuff I'd set up to make a (2D) game. Lacks a few things but all the code is easy to extend and simple to understand. I'm confident you could start reading it as you go and understand everything almost regardless of skill level really.
But monogame is also good becuase of all the resources. Angel2D lacks an asset pipeline. Which doesn't bother me too much.
Might be worth saying that games don't really share all that much. There's common patterns like entity component systems. But all that's required for a game is just that they update and render.
So yeah.
Am I supposed to create one object for each tile on the screen?
How do I deal with tilemaps and moveable objects?
>>148065694
I'm a noob so I have no idea how I would do that sorry.
>>148065239
Maybe this is a really dumb question, but then if it's all still named microsoft.xna..., then the only thing different is I install the monogame installer from their website?
>>148065146
To add, if you want the 2 to share the same exact controls, you could have them share the same name of the type of control.
Let's say you want 'move left' to be the same.
movement_left = <sprite moves to the left at whatever speed>
if character_control == 0
&& <pressing the 'A' key>
{
movement_left;
}
if character_control == 1
&& <detects player from the left at a distance of 800>
{
movement_left;
}
You're gonna have some separation but that's just due to figuring out how you want to set up your AI.
>>148038536
Instead of directly querying for inputs in the character's update function, use a separate object that has a reference to the character and calls functions on the character.
So for example if you want a character that shoots, the character has a Shoot() function. You then have a controller that in its update function checks for if the space bar is pressed and calls Shoot() if it is. You can then slot this controller out with any other controller, like an AI controller or network controller without having to change the player object itself.

Just be careful if you have multiple instances of the character. At that point you'll need a system of giving each instance a unique ID or disabling the player-controls or you might end up controlling both the enemy and player at the same time.
I think that's why it's easier to hard code them and separate them, but it's really just a matter of figuring it out. Just test different ways.

Oh and collision detection.

most people just learn in college that you make all class variables private and write getters/setters. there's a couple reasons why, and some are decent and some aren't:
1. if you ever need to change the getter/setter, it's easier. consider if you want to change the function to return 10 times the value of variable... if it's just a public variable, now you have to make it private and add a special getter anyway
2. sometimes you only want a setter or getter but not the other. making it public means anyway can read/write at any time
>>148067169
>explain?
It's drama between some mentally ill person(s), the image is irrelevant, it's just used as a public declaration of shitposting being imminent.
>>148067026
Literally so you don't have the variable public so something in the file hierarchy can't fuck up that variable.
>>148066876
But thats legitimate feedback, not shitposter bullying
>>148067169
In literally what way is it at all good? Show your fucking work.
>>148057960

>>148066887
Where is your original game?
>>148067230
I was (mostly) kidding. While poorly received and a clear cash-in, Lightning Returns still has pretty gr8 graphics (if low-res textures and questionable art direction at times) and its dead-rising like everything-on-timers system is still a fairly unique feature in vidya gaems and especially JRPGs, if only for design reasons. The battle system and the bajillions of pretty rainbow shaders are also fairly complex and quite impressive. It might not be a great game when held up to close scrutiny, but it is very technically competent and a lot oftalentwent into making it, especially on its low (for squeenix) budget.
>>148067026
So you can set a breakpoint and have the debugger pause any time that variable is gotten
More so for setters than getters though. And it makes it easier to see all the places in the code that get/set a var, rather than seeing ALL references

Great stuff.

Imma watch those, thanks.

Shit, that would be my code, but i know it isn't the best.
I'll give angel2d a shot, not now, but later.
Thanks.
>>148067026
If you let your variables be accessed from anywhere you risk them being fucked with by other functions somewhere else in your code
Is what I'm being told in my C# courses at least.

Looks good anon! Keep us updated.
>>148057960
>>148067456
whoops
>>148067410
Yes sure, random insults are great feedback.
>>148067026
In the future you may want to change how variable is created or do something special when it is accessed/modified.
For example, if you have a transform class you may not want to recalculate the matrix every time you get the matrix, so you want to cache this matrix and only recalculate it only when some attribute has changed. So you set your position, rotation and scale and a matrix to private and add setters for them which change a bool variable in the class that tells the matrix getters wether the matrix should be recalculated next time someone gets it.
Or a more simple example, lets say you have a time class. You have an hours variable in it from the start, but in the future you decide you want to save seconds instead and calculate hours from the seconds. Now you need to update all code that uses the hours variable (or update the hours variable every time the seconds variable is set - which requires a setter method). If you had a GetHours method you could simply update that to do the calculation from seconds.
It looks like shit in Java and C++, but it does have its uses in many cases. I do avoid it in C++ in places where I'm fairly sure I'm not going to change anything in the future or where I'm willing to pay the cost of refactoring everything in the future for the convenience of not writing Get() everywhere. C# solves this very nicely, so maybe C++ will fix this in C++23 or so.

Nevermind, I figured it out. It was because of the weird sprite size of my turtle and because I made the triangle a solid object, pretty much. So my guess is that it was checking and realizing that the next position would put part of the sprite inside the triangle and stopping in there. Made the triangle non-solid and am just going to manually create a different set of rules for what happens when the turtle hits it

What happened to that guy making that riot police game? It looked cool as fuck.
Do any GM users here know why rectangle_in_rectangle would be refusing to output anything other than 0 or 2, and only two when it's two intersecting corners as opposed to overlapping edges? Or do I just have a lack of understanding how this works?

Guys I'm using the Tiled editor.
So far my game is just a bunch of static platforms and I would like to add moving ones. I know how to make things move, but how do I create/define such objects in the Tiled editor so that I can display/manage them?

>>148067026
One good reason (out of many): If you allow outside methods to change data members, you will need to double-check those outside methods should you ever radically alter the object's internal behavior. If you only use get and set methods, you can just treat the object as a black box, without worrying what outside methods are doing to the data members.
Not using get/set methods also makes unit testing the object extremely difficult, since the object can behave differently in different places.
