Successful Kickstarter edition.

Do you have a question about a Japanese visual novel or a translation of it?
/vn/ is ready to answer it. We are not them.

It's stupid threadly renpy question time.
If I need to move an imagebutton n pixels to the right and n pixels down for every created iteration of this imagebutton, how do I write a transform to do this? In pseudocode:
>for i in enumerate(buttons_list):
>imagebutton at position
and for the transform:
>xalign 0.5+(position_modifier which is lets say 50 pixels) yalign 0.5+position_modifier
>and make position_modifier get multiplied by i (so for the third button transform will move it 100 pixels etc)
I just can't organize it in my head, maybe someone has any ideas

>>148032905
There are 11M people using Steam right at this moment and (almost) none of them have heard about your game yet. Make a good game and you'll be good
>>
>>148032905
if you give a steam key with the KS reward, won't it still count for the daily purchase/download popularity?
>>
>>148033152
From a pure mathematical point of view, yes, very much so. You would benefit from not putting effort into making something that won't sell/only you will like. There are other mediums and other userbases. EVNs are not your only option, they're just the cheapest in terms of audiovisual presentations of a story.
>>
>>148032905
If you set your kickstarter to a sufficient amount to fund the game's creation, any sales afterwards are gravy, so it doesn't matter that much. In practicality there will always be sales afterwards because there will be people who missed the kickstarter, or who only buy finished products, or who hear about it because they see a friend playing it on steam, and so on.
>>148033540
I don't think this is well known, too many private algorithms at work. My guess would be that it does not count for the 'top seller' list, but if people with a free key PLAY it, it counts for a different set of internal popularity measurements.
>>
>>148032905

I'm not a steamworks dev but my best friend is. As far as what he's described it as you just go in and "print" however many codes you need (could be in the thousands if you wanted) and then you just do whatever you want with them, like email them to people or something. I'd get him in here but of course he's asleep.

You request them from Steam. I personally had to send out each one, one-by-one. It was a very long and laborious process.
>>
>>148036894
More or less. You request them in batches from Steam (you can have batches labeled as to their purpose, which may help you track them later), they send you a giant list in a text file, then you do whatever with them.

Did anyone hear about Winged Cloud having no plans to continue Sakura Fantasy, because the first chapter didn't sell as much as they hoped? They posted about it on their patreon.
>>
>>148065317
There was much grousing on /u/
>>
>>148065745
It's another strike against episodic vns.
>>
>>148066313
I think it's more that the game took too much effort to make for Winged Cloud.
>>
>>148066923
mostly, they're lazy
but yes, episodic is dangerous because developers use it to 'test the waters' and are very prone to canceling if the result isn't as awesome as they hoped
>>
>>148066923
How? It wasn't any longer or asset heavy than their other games. Maybe Sakura Beach 2 just convinced them that sequels sell like shit. Sakura Fantasy wasn't a very good performer for Winged Cloud.
>>
>>148066923
Are you sure you're thinking of the right game? There was no more effort put into Sakura Fantasy than any of their other regular VNs.
>>
>>148067342
The other problem is the amount of time that had elapsed since Chapter 1 came out. People can lose interest and not remember where the story left off. Episodic game makers should take a note from Star Wars and include a brief summary of previous events.
>>
>>148067732
They put slightly more effort into writing it. There was some semblance of the beginning of a story.
>>
>>148067908
A star fell from the sky.
'Because it's important' justification x100.

They had absolutely no idea where they were going with it. You could literally do a short list of unresolved plot points and finish the thing in Chapter 2.

Rematch slime monster.

https://vndb.org/v18280

Generic sells. Look at Sakura games. All their characters look exactly the same with mix and match skin, eye colors and hair types. They all have the same base. How many people buy those games? More of them than the ones buying any other awesome and unique EVN. People are easy to pander to. So why are you risking everything by making something unique and interesting when you can spend half the time and make another Sakura/Japanese highschool game?

>>
>>148070937
>why be a jew and write crap to make money when you could make something unique and interesting that you will feel good about and could touch the hearts of others?
Gee I don't know.

And unique VNs can sell well, most cases where genuinely great and interesting evns have flopped is a case of failure to advertise it properly more than anything else. People can't buy your game if they don't know it exists.
>>
>>148073640
>to make money
You answered your own question. Money makes the world go around. Happiness can't be had on an empty stomach.
>>
>>148074009
If your goal is to make money then why are you making an evn? That's the real question desu senpai. If you're making a VN and you're serious about it, you've already decided to eschew traditional career paths in favor of following your dreams and doing what you love. Why stop halfway there?
>>
>>148074307
>If your goal is to make money then why are you making an evn?

My goal is to make money and enjoy doing it. Funnily enough, I'm making one of those unique VNs that probably won't sell. Speaking hard truths and venting frustrations gets me through the long weeks. Especially when posting volume is low. I agree that unique EVNs can sell, but I think we can both agree that it's an uphill battle without serving your potential customers boobs on a platter or the usual tropes. That said, games like Cinders do give me some hope.
>>
>>148075463
Really a lot of it is luck and knowing how to advertise. Too many genuinely good games fail because the creator thought they could rely on the quality alone and didn't generate adequate interest in it.
>>
>>148075992
How do I generate adequate interest in it?
>>
>>148078345
Have some kind of blog or website with regular updates of projects. Nice, pretty, shiny art will also get people's attention as well, so if you have it, flaunt it. Be smart with how you word the synopsis of the game, it's the "hook" and what most people will use to decide if they're interested in your game, so you need to make it count.

And most importantly lots and lots of lowkey shilling. People shit on shills all the time but it's actually pretty important as far as getting the info out there that your game exists and might be good. You just can't be too obvious about it.
>>
>>148078879
Also don't talk about a great project, get people interested, and go radio silent for two years and expect people to still remember or care when it's finished.

>VN is told in a way where you don't always feel like you're the main character. It might show scenes with a narrator, or even other characters besides the main character. The protagonist is a character that has been named and has a history.

Choose one.

I am not worthy to work on a game anon. I am not even worthy to post in this thread. I only wish to bask in the glory that is this thread so that I might take some of the talent from here and one day in the far far future be able to create something resembling a VN.
>>
>>148125191
It's too exhausting for me to write a self insert protag. I like to let my characters tell me the story.
>>
I am going to play every free VN on itch.io (231 of them). Any recommendations or should I just get to it?
>>
>>148125518
Tough luck. Everyone's too paranoid to post here. The few who have the guts to post are either secure with what they're doing or amateurs who have no shame or worries on positing their crud.

Just work on it already.
>>
>>148125191
Self inserting is only good in 100% dating sims. If you want to have a plot, ready the MC's personality.
>>
>>148125657
I can't seem to pick a story to work on. Every time I pick one I want to change it a few days later to something completely different. Go ahead and laugh anon. I'll never make it.
>>
>>148125191
Second, but it would depend how the narration is - you usually shouldn't need it unless it's at the start to set events up.

I'd like to play a character that has something to add rather than a self-insert with, often bland, choices. Seeing as you can have choices all the same with an actual personality to your protagonist, you can usually have choices that reflect that and develop that character over time - or, more or less, show us what kind of character they are, anyway.

Keep self-insert for things that really don't care about their plot, like eroge or dating.
>>
>>148125780
I will only laugh at you if you give up on yourself, anon. Get yourself together and focus.
>>
>>148125191
I really don't like switching the PoV in VNs, I find it much more awkward than regular novels. So I always have a named protagonist with a history, but never leave their PoV so I can see how one might feel like "you are the MC."
>>
>>148125743
This. I simply don't see how can you do anything of interest in a VN with a full self-insert dildo MC. Either you let the player choose every little detail and end up with a meaningless and shallow plot to accomodate every possible choice (Skyrim lol), or you make every choice irrelevant beyond a line or two of flavor text and railroad the shit out of them.
>>
>>148064372
>agreed to make some changes to avoid stepping on too many toes. Nothing too major, mostly related to the GUI and using "Go! Go!" in the title.
>>
>>148125780
Pick an idea and just roll with it - it's gonna be shit, but it'll be your shit and you'll be better off for producing that shit. I like to point people to the nanowrimo thought, which sitting down and writing a novel in a month. Majority are bad ideas, but you only get invested half way through them, you only really come to terms with what your characters are capable of later on. So sit the fuck down and write your current idea out and don't move on at all, you'll come to love your creation. And don't worry about art for your first vn, it should be practice only. Don't worry how your writing is doing - because we all make the mistake of comparing it to what we've seen and thinking it should at least be on that level, well it won't man.
>>
Thanks for the replies. It looks like named protagonist it is. Now if only I could think of something interesting to make it about.

What about a first person VN where you can influence the character's decisions, but it still feels like they are their own person?

I find that Jap VNs tend to do this a lot better than eVNs with shit like Shirou and Takeru.

Play more RPGs for research. It is possible to let the player identify strongly with the main character and give them a lot of options while also giving the protagonist a backstory and encouraging the player to roleplay as the character.
>>
>>148130829
I can't understand why so many people seem to think self insert means no personality or backstory. Players often insert as people they WANT to be or identify with, not only as characters who are husks meant for them to project onto.

Here's the Reach for the Stars-A Yuri Visual Novel breakdown of costs.

>700 - CG's
>1200 - Background Art
>300 - Music
>180+ - KS Fees

Stretch goals
>2800 - Mara will have a route
>3200 - If I can reach 3200 it means I can add more CG's. As you can see 700 means 14 CG's (basing this off my artist's prices).
>4400 - More backgrounds for the game.
>5500 - After stories and love scenes... The after stories will take place when they are grown up (age 18-21)
>8000 - Partial voice acting!

They raised $8,024, so they have no margin for error. If their artists flake or they underestimated something, then obviously something has to go.
>>
>>148134907
Seems like it would be easy to cut back on what partial voice acting means if they didn't specify.

Because I have on hand that kind of info. Pretty sure if you wanted to you'd just read the first forum page on dA to find that info. As it stands, that bg work is something people would tack on for free, counting it as a "simple bg". The foliage is literally a brush to get that exact effect - the tree is not at all impressive, an amateur could produce the same result. The only redeeming quality is the window border and the character linework.

This is one of the problems I'm facing. I'm writing a first person narration story from the protag's PoV, but it's really limiting. For example I can't draw attention to important things that I don't want him to notice specifically, or I can't write scenes without him in it without switching PoVs constantly or going into 3rd person narration, which gets confusing when done constantly.

To be honest I'm starting to think it's easier just to write like a regular novel and throw art on top of it. Don't some VNs do this?
>>
>>148183803
I feel like decision trees become kinda strange if you do that kind of thing. There are certainly exceptions to all the rules.

I mean, there are certainly VNs that stick with a protag mostly and cut to another PoV a couple of times and it doesn't kill the VN.
>>
>>148182346
I mean, I don't mind doing it if you're having an issue and aren't able to download it from itch.io, but I need some kind of reason first.

At what point do you think a VN is saleworthy? When does it go from being a free to play VN to being worthy of selling on Steam? Is it word count? Quality? Something else?
>>
>>148266643
It all depends. People have charged money for absolute garbage and people have given away pretty impressive VNs for free. In general I'd say length and quality are the biggest factors, and if at least one of those things is very high you're justified in charging.
>>
>>148266643
It generally shouldn't 'go from' because that's the kind of thing that needs to be taken into account in early development planning, or you may have to rip out a lot of your game and start over.

No game is worthy, every game is worthy, it's more a matter of how you want to approach it and what you want to achieve with it.

Also, Steam is not the alpha and omega of game sales.
>>
>>148266643
>being worthy of selling on Steam?
Have you seen a lot the shit that gets through Greenlight or gets on Steam in early access only to never be finished?
Steam gets indie trash uploaded onto it for sale every day. Thinking you have to be "worthy" of being on Steam is just harmful thinking that will keep you back.
The only thing you need to worry about about is if you think your VN is interesting enough to pass Greenlight (You'll need to have some basic marketing skills) and whether or not it's good enough that people will buy it.
If you don't think people will buy it blind, then throw it on Steam as a free VN or include a decent demo to try and entice people.

In your opinion, what's the best way to do a demo?
One full route with no variation so the player can experience what one playthrough is generally like or the first act of the VN so the player can sample a little bit of each route?
Or some other method entirely?
>>
>>148305556

If it requires different poses that requires significant redraws I charge a bit extra, but it's mostly head/arm/expression changes, reasonable stuff.
>>
>>148317636
>the first act of the VN so the player can sample a little bit of each route
Unless it's unavoidable, there's no reason to show off the entirety of one route. It limits the appeal to only those who like that character, while also providing enough of the game for a lot of people to no longer maintain interest. A lot of players just play through the route they like and don't bother with the rest.
You should give them a taste of everything and leave them wanting more.

Flow charts make everything better and make it much easier to make progress.
>tfw was just going to give up out of frustration and go to bed because I couldn't work out how a particular lynch pin scene should go but I made a flow chart out of the little idea bubbles I had and now I'm back on track.

Like the others said, we're too small and fractious a userbase, and too invested in our own work, to come up with a standard recommendations guide.

The OP contains links to a list of some notable freeware games, but nobody's going to state that they are definitely the best, because then we'd have to fight. It's just an overview of a few things that have been done that are free and therefore you can check out with minimal investment.

There's also the VNDB link which sorts games marked 'original language: english' by VNDB rating. It's not perfect, it picks up several games that aren't EVNs because of the way VNDB works, and popularity massively skews the results, and VNDB intentionally threw out certain games while including others that are way more questionable about being 'VNs', but it will at least provide a few more names to investigate.

>Your ideas and writing better be god's gift to mankind
Firstly, I am mostly marketing it to people who are familiar with VNs already. I plan to try my hand on a more "average" consumer with the next project. secondly, I think you're overestimating how hard it is to keep someone's attention if they are not immediately turned off by the idea or general execution.
>>
>>148339708
As someone who isn't really into the art style either, UAB is still very impressive to me for what it is. I'd be hard pressed to try and find a better EVN.
>>
>>148388224
VN readers are in Japan. In the west we have "westerners" and a couple weeaboos and such who are somehow interested in VNs. Maybe this isn't their first game. Maybe they have an amazing idea and riveting writing that can keep people interested. It just seems bloated to me, but we can't get any info on it so it's all speculation since anons don't post stuff about their games. So they have to deal with these baseless discussions.

>UAB was garbage
It has hands down top tier music, direction and programming. The subject matter is intentionally disturbing and you're letting that decide for you whether you think it's good or not.

Good fucking luck persevering as an artist with that attitude chum.

So Japanese VNs can be EVNs? Well played, anon.
>>
>>148392808
Here we have a mad anon in his natural habitat.
>>
>>148392808
By non-JVN standards it has a great production level, but production level is superficial. If people don't like the subject matter they're not going to like the VN no matter how well made it is. And having a better production level than other non-JVNs doesn't make it good, it just means it has better production level than other non-JVNs.
>>
>>148387646
>your VN has enough words to fill over 3 full novels

Katawa Shoujo alone has 490k words, dumbass. 20 pages children books might be enough to keep you entertained, but there are people out there with longer attention span.
>>
>>148394089
But no one liked Katawa Shoujo anon. Those baka westerners didn't have the attention span to read all those words, unlike the superior nippon race. Obviously no VN longer than a few hours could ever have any success.

>I went to school with a girl that was going for her ~Art Degree~

>She was pretty good, though. A lot of potential with an artstyle very similar to Ilya Kushinov. We used to hang out quite a bit and play games. Well, one day, she kinda just sperged out quietly. Deleted a lot of friends and made weird ultimatums to others. I got told I needed to "clean up my look" and go with her to pick out new clothes so I could look more presentable. Ignoring how outrageous that was, I was also working part time as an electrician to help pay the bills, and I couldn't just go out and spend hundreds of dollars on what amounted to be hipster clothing.

>Shit was weird. She was completely fine, and then one day just snapped. I let contact drop off and didn't bother keeping up with her after she removed me and wouldn't look my way at Uni. Last I heard, she got into some bad shit with some hipster boyfriend and ended up getting beat up because she couldn't "get to his level" with her art.

>Whew. Didn't mean to make it so long winded, but people that dedicate themselves to art are just ticking time bombs. I have no idea what it is that causes such dramatic shifts in mood and attitude, unless they're all mentally ill and undiagnosed.

>>>/v/344949619
Is this why people keep having problems with their artists?
>>
In general, the type of artists in the VN scene, are people who really don't do anything besides make pretty pictures. Often these aren't even really artistically driven people, they're technicians who draw popular animu characters for popularity and money. This why artists are scum, they don't care about their project, they don't care about your project, they don't care about art, they just care about attention and easy money. Exceptions exist but not too many.

Don't feel too bad. Artists who are only in it for pure artistic pursuit are the 1%. And chances of them being actually successful is slim. You on the other hand, are the practical type who want to use art for a living. For all the crap that artists get, they're actually doing as much as they can to survive, just like everybody else. It's just that sometimes it's easy to be jealous of them since they're having "fun" at their work.

Well... I know very little about art, just wanted to suggest things that seemed interesting.

I originally meant hand-drawn, but 3D is very neat too. It depends on the other things you are including in the tutorial. If you are showing how to do all the things you mentioned before hand-drawn, seems natural to go into textures with the same approach. And vice versa.

Most of the recent releases have been JVNs. General lighting and coloring tricks would be great! Is it too complicated to do a 3-point perspective tutorial? I've been looking for new ones.
>>
>>148448897
I see. Well, texturing isn't something I can really elaborate on right now. There's not much to say about it either.

>>148452632
I can start with lighting and coloring. It's pretty basic, but I think some people could find some of it interesting.

3-point perspective is something I'd do after covering 1-point and 2-point perspective.
But frankly, 3-point perspective isn't something I'm very comfortable with. Almost every VN bg uses either 1-point or 2-point perspective. I only ever used 3-point perspective to give the towering feeling of a massive structure.
Eventually I should cover that. And then, fisheye perspective.

How do people develop a furry fetish? Like one day you suddenly realize you want to fuck an anthropomorphic fox. What could trigger this?
>>
>>148467329
That's a silly question. How do people develop any fetish? Vore? Scat? Diapers? Inflation? There are thousands of weird fetishes and you don't try to explain them. You just don't. With that said, people like cat girls and girls with ears and tails right? Most furries have the bodies of men and women right? It doesn't seem that odd really. They're sexualized to look like real people. Why do people like MLP hentai? You're stepping into a dark room anon, and you wont find any light there.
>>

Panicking when filling out my Centrelink application and telling them to take out 10% of each payment for tax was the best mistake I ever made. Because I earned well under the tax free threshold (unemployed all year other than 4 weeks of work before getting made redundant), I got to claim every single cent back.
Finally, I can buy a new laptop that actually has all the keys working and doesn't overheat and burn my leg while idling.

>>
>>148468561
There's a difference between getting a fetish and awakening one. I can look at naked old ladies day and night, and I will never find them attractive. I don't have a fetish or old ladies. Discovering fetishes that you have a taste for, but did not know about previously is something a bit different. Getting into the psychology behind all that is beyond me though.

>>
>>148471287
Sure, but you see a lot more erotic artwork featuring anthro animals than non-anthro or trees or socks, other things that some people will fuck
>>
>>148472343
Very few people are sexually attracted to trees and socks. You don't look at a sock and go "oh yeah 10/10 sock could stick my dick in there all day". People like sexy humans, and some people like those sexy humans to have weird animal features because it's their fetish.
>>
>>148472343
I'm more curious about the people who aren't turned on by sexy furry characters. It's weird to me that something has to be completely human for someone to find it sexy. That's like a recipe for a boring sex life.

Those aren't words, so of course you don't have to think them to type them. Which is irrelevant because we're talking about an anon and what he typed which were words and not gibberish.

Everything is relevant in pedantry wars.

Not true. Even silly arguments must have order of some kind.

So this game just came out. Also it's episodic and has positive reviews.
>>
>>148493172
Why do people post such incredibly boring screenshots when they're supposedly marketing their games?
>>
>>148494281
>it's episodic

Considering the producer's existing history i assume there's a small number of dedicated followers and everyone else has the sense to steer well clear.

3 reviews is very close to nothing, and one of those three reviews is from a somewhat suspicious-looking account, too (only game reviewed, small number of games on account, account flagged private)

For that matter, the extremely verbose review is suspicious in a different way. That user has posted other reviews, but each of them was one sentence long, unlike the ENORMOUS post about this game. It's definitely a real account, but I would suspect that they might have been somehow incentivised to post a review.

so, should we chop the trailing end off the OP next time?

Why does it seem like every BL vn is trying to be a N+C game?

I just want more comfy games.
>>
>>148500195
What does N+C mean?
>>
>>148500416

Nitro Chiral. It's a company that makes BL games, they have a very particular approach to them.
>>
>>148500509
Is it a cringy approach? Because that character description is terrible.
>>
>>148500614

It's more edgy than cringy. Their games are fantasy/sci fi settings with lots of gore and yaoi tropes on top.

For reference, their parent company is Nitro plus, who did Song of Saya.
>>
>>148500908
I loved Saya. Going on that image and not clicking on the kickstarter at all I don't get a similar vibe.
>>
>>148500195
I don't see how that resembles an N+C game at all. I'm guessing by the "play the demo without looking up anything" advice it's a typical darker than it looks type game, which Nitro+ did not invent, nor is it really even their MO as you can tell what their darker games are just by looking at them.
>>
>>148500195
what would comfy be like in BL?
I still want a gay ice skating game
>>
>>148501778
How to make a comfy game in the first place?
>>
>>148501521

The KS outright says that one of the stretch goals are N+C style bad ends.

>>148501778

A game that doesn't kill or horrible traumatize half the cast.
>>
>>148501778
adding to prove that it's not like Japan doesn't understand the appeal of pretty boys on the ice
>>
>>148501957
You'll have to settle for homoerotic ice skating anime.
