Like, what the fuck? Is this going to be 1 hour long? When (if) I do a KS campaign, my initial goal will have be about three times that just to finish, the game with most funds coming from other sources the, and I'm not talking about their initial goal.

They still usually take less time to make than projects where eveything is being done by a single person, unless that person is a fucking prodigy and is able to work quickly, 24/7, with decent quality in all fields at one – write music, draw pictures, write texts, code, etc.
And even then, a single person will never be able to create at least a relatively, relatively decent VN, where a team has at least a chance to succeed.
There is also the point that making the second game will be easier for a good team because they know how to work with each other, while nothing will really change for a single person.

>>
>>147810693
It should be "relatively big, relatively decent". My bad.
Because that would simply take too much time, require him to be good at everything at once, AND never lose the motivation and the passion throughout the years and years of development. I just don't see that happening and cannot remember a single occasion when it did happen. If you can, please do tell.

As the other anon said, fucking ryukishi07, though I'll give his art is pretty ugly it didn't stop his games from becoming hugely successful. I can't speak for UAB but it think it's at least kind of long and has pretty good production values all things considered.

In any case that's a pretty pessimistic view, not everyone is a lazy shit. If working on VNs and other projects has taught me anything it's that it's not about "passion and motivation", it's a small part but it won't get you through anything. If you really want to get something done you just get up in the morning and you work on it. I don't think it's something most people would choose but it's far from impossible.

I understand why most people would choose the path of a group for larger projects and it certainly has many benefits, but I really couldn't do that. I'm a total control freak and I want every part of my work to be mine and come from my own vision. The skills needed to make a VN are skills I have in varying degrees and am continuing to develop. To me there's no appeal in paying someone to do something when I could just do it myself the way I want it. It takes time but I've done long term projects before and I have no doubt l can do this.
>>
>>147810817
>ryukishi
He is not a Western developer and his art is mostly terrible. He either outsourced, was donated the music for his games, or used free tracks, AFAIK. And I have no idea if anyone helped him with coding. But yeah, I guess you could stretch him to count as an exception.

Yet what will make you wake up in the morning and work on your VN? You're saying passion for creating and motivation to continue wouldn't be that thing?

You say they are not necessary. What exactly would you replace them with? Desire for money? What keeps you waking up in the morning and working on your game? Even when you don't want to? That's motivation. Even if your motivator is money. It's still motivation.

Ryukishi is a composer. He even calls his novels "sound novels" because the focus is on the sound more than the visuals. He makes all the music, writes the script, and draws the art. It's not that difficult of a concept.

Why not just make a story based around an adult woman instead of a loli? Is it really THAT important they have to be a little girl?

And before you say "They have to be young and unaware of the world" or something else relating to youth, you can do that with 18 year olds as well. Most 18 year olds still haven't gotten hit with the harsh reality of the real world.

If you make it like that yeah. There's a thing called development blogs, game development communities (We're kind of in one right now), and ways to connect with other people who'd be interested in working with you on your work.

Yeah if you sit in your room and don't talk to anyone you'll be all alone, that's your own choice though.

You can do that with a 40-year-old and justify that as them being immature and living all their lives in their parents' basement or whatever. What's the point?

>>
>>147819672
>>147819703
The comment that started the discussion was the bit about "Game creation is a lonely thing, man". It doesn't have to be if you try reaching out to other people. Honestly the same can apply to life itself if you want to go broader, but gamedev is not by any means a "lonely" hobby if you actually connect with other people also interested in it.
>>
>>147819787
I'm not desperate. I'm just trying my luck if there's a grill out there who would make games with me. ;_;
>>
>>147819871
>but gamedev is not by any means a "lonely" hobby if you actually connect with other people also interested in it.

This isn't gamedev though, or we'd be in /agdg/ which gets multiple threads a day. This is EVN, the bastard child of gamedev where we don't make real games, we make flipbooks.
>>
>>147819967
It's still a part of gamedev though. We get so few posts because this is a fairly niche genre (especially in the west), but it's still a part of gamedev, or creating entertainment software at the least. The reason /agdg/ gets more posts is because it encompasses all the different genres of gamedev instead of this niche specific genre only general.

Same applies to meeting people or finding people with similar interests, look in places that overall relate to your hobby and look there if you can find anyone, or go straight for the kill and find EVN communities online. I never said meeting other people you get along with would be easy, but if you don't even try you really can't say it's a "lonely" hobby because you aren't even trying to reach out to as many people as you can.

Hell even then, just because someone isn't an EVN enthusiast doesn't mean you can't get along with them or become potential partners in work. Artists in general can work on visual novels created by others. Programmers can work on visual novels created by others. Musicians can work on visual novels created by others.

Laughs. Guys can't make Yuri games or be into Yuri? I think you're confused. Guys are the number one supporter of Yuri content. Sorry to break the reality that you're posting with a bunch of hot girls, anon.
>>
>>147821986
>Guys
Are you not aware that guys are the minority in every yuri forum on the internet? You're laughable. Yuri was created by women for women. Sure there are porn of it but the soft content in yuri is pretty telling.
>>
>>147822224
>Yuri was created by women for women.
Not even close. Girls like Yaoi and content with guys. Any statistic or poll will tell you this. Western women are the same as Japanese women. Yuri is for guys and lesbians.
>>
>>147822330
Guys thinks that yuri is boring since they can't relate to things with no dicks in it. That works only in general porn. If it really is to cater to men, then why is yuri so fucking boring? Western women are not the same as japanese women. I'm not putting japanese women on pedestal here but they really are rather retarded when it comes to their sexuality, even their fucking society thinks that they're that retarded.

Hence the following trope
>They don't know dicks, so they're definitely just going through a phase
>>
>>147822525
>Guys thinks that yuri is boring since they can't relate to things with no dicks in it.

That's the most warped thing I've heard in a while. By that logic men don't like women either, because they can't relate to things that don't have dicks. I swear to god 4chan, stop learning warped logic from eachother. I guess that's to be expected when you get a bunch of shutins with warped worldviews together to discuss things day in and day out, but come on.
>>
Who gives a shit? I might secretly be a woman, or a man, or Raithfyre, or JP, or your fourteen year old sister still fantasizing about you being banged by your best friend because you got drunk together that one time. You can't tell. You can fantasize if you like, since that's supposed to part of your skillset if you're making these games, but there's no point in arguing about it.
>>
>>147822525
The yuri fans that expect purity are probably guys. Also, people always complain about the fanservice in yuri VNs pandering to a male audience.
>>
>>147822803
>but there's no point in arguing about it.
That's like saying this thread has no purpose. The only time we're ever active is when we're arguing about stupid things.
>>
>>147822795
How is it warped to not like things if you can't particularly relate to it?
>>
Honest question. When boys go on school trips together and stay in, like, hotels and stuff, do they share beds like girls do, or do they each get their own?
>>
>>147822926
It's not warped to not like things for whatever reason. It's warped to assume that EVERYONE doesn't like something because YOU can't relate to a story without dicks.
>>
>>147822895
Not necessarily we were active when we're encouraging other devs to put their posts up. The previous thread was so much better compared to this one.
>>
>>147822926
Think about it. Who adores females? Men. Why? Because we don't relate to them. They're interesting. Opposites. Two different sides of the same coin. Whether it's two of them having a relationship, a pinup of a sexy woman, or what have you, males adore females. So let me ask you this. If Yuri is pandering to females, what are they doing? The proper answer is, they're doing it wrong. It's like saying Yaoi and gay relationship VNs are aimed at attracting males. It's completely warped logic.
>>
>>147823047
But it's somehow acceptable to assume that everyone on this thread are all men? Right.
>>
>>147822843
Which, as we've previously discussed, almost always mean "I don't personally like it or find it tasteful".

In 3dpd lesbian porn it's much more obvious what's pandering to a male audience, because you get these ridiculous pictures where a girl with hugely long nails is posing vaguely near a spread-open pussy and sticking her tongue out in its direction and clearly wants nothing more to do with it. This problem is not very common in yuri.
>>
>>147823180
4chan in general is largely men, unfortunately. You're expecting a niche thread within the community to be bustling with females? Not going to happen.
>>
>>147823180
Huh? The person quoted said that men don't like yuri because there's no dicks in it. I'm not sure what that has to do with assuming everyone in the thread is male.
>>
>>147822936
Nobody shares beds.
>>
>>147823261
>Literally every poll and previous threads have women in it
>retaining tits or gtfo mentality outside of /b

>>147823340
This all started because someone assumed that everyone here are guys.
>>
>>147823340
Just a poster confusing you for being every post in the same reply train up to the very first post. One of the downsides of anonymous boards.
>>
>>147823146
>Think about it. Who adores females?
Everyone, because girls are naturally more adorable than gross icky men.

Also, girls are more affectionate and can get away with openly planting their faces in my bosom in public. People would think that was weird if a guy did it but with girls it's just 'cute'. Also they're shorter so they fit in the boobs more easily.
>>
>>147823261
You're a literal imbecile if you think "no girls on the internet" means that less than half of this thread is women when it's very, very obvious from observing any community of Visual Novel developers that there is an overwhelmingly of girls who are working on these, and we held census at least twice.

>>147823206

>>
>>147824003
That's a hilarious comment that I would expect from someone on 4chan. You must be quite the shutin or have no family. Strangely, it doesn't take being a pedo to be around little kids since they are everywhere and unbelievably, even adults start out as them. I have my doubts about whether or not having kids around someone like you is healthy though. Perhaps it's for the best.
>>
>>147821415
>musicwife
Since we're so hellbent on talking statistics, girls don't often produce music.
>>
>>147824104
No one actually believes this. Yuri is for guys and lesbians. 99% of the fans of Yuri shows in Japan are males. It's the same everywhere. Westerners are a bit idiotic sometimes, but they normally conform to the same interests when it comes to sexuality. Though they often aren't as outspoken when they like something slightly odd.
>>
>>147824184
True. Maybe they'd have better luck in finding a musicwaifu on lemmasoft. Anyone wants an art waifu? I'm up for grabs. ;_;
>>
lesbians should be counted as men since that's basically what they are.
>>
>>147824151
No father, no brothers, all-female schooling, certainly don't have kids myself, don't associate with anyone who does. Basically, my knowledge of males comes largely from fiction.
>>
>>147824104
>so it's dishonest to say it's written mostly with women in mind.
I'm not sure who said that, but it certainly isn't ALL written with ONLY men in mind.

(Also, the creators being men doesn't necessarily mean it's written with men in mind. The creators of children's shows are rarely children themselves.)

The problem is that people call out individual parts of a story as 'male pandering' largely because they don't like them and not because they have specific evidence that those specific parts were actually meant for guys. As was discussed in the last thread, completely contradictory things are often held up as being signs of male pandering.
>>
>>147824456
What's wrong with you? I thought all girls like that ended up craving the dick. Are you a lesbian or something?

Do I have to have romance and love interest in my VN to make it sell? I assume I'll get more sales if I have romance options rather than just a story since isn't that what people expect out of VNs normally?
>>
>>147825673
No, you don't. Just make your fucking game.
>>
>>147825673
Yes. People will hound you about getting their waifu.
>>
>>147825673
You need a hook of some kind. The two most obvious ones are romance and mystery, almost all successful VNs hit up one or the other or both.

Romance is an easy hook because all you have to do is show people a hot character and say 'YOU CAN DATE THIS' and now they want to play.

Mystery, you'll have to tease them a little, get them curious, make them want to know the answer.

Still, this is a much easier pitch than 'Read my VN which talks about political theory! It costs $10!'
>>
>>147825436
Everything about that game always seems uninspired to me. What made you decide to play it?
>>
>>147826058

I read An Octave Higher and once you get on the true route, the game just starts forcing the author's political theory so much the story just takes a back seat.

The sentence doesn't sound natural, nor has the literary originality that would excuse that awkwardness
>Her eyes are a blue of Lapis Lazuli
You anglo natives correct me if I'm wrong, but this doesn't sound gramatically correct.
>they gleam as such
Is this really necessary? I mean, you can make it work in some contecxt, but I'd rather do something like "her eyes gleam like lapis lazuli" than dragging it.
>sheepish
Is this an appropiate adjective for eyelids? I'd turn it into an adverb if I were really bent in using it in the sentence. "Squints her eyelids sheepishly". Even better if you used coyly though.

Aside from the first one, it's a matter of opinion, but I think those tweaks would make it look less amateur.

>Also, people always complain about the fanservice in yuri VNs
That's retarded. I'm a lesbian and I like seeing tits and panties and I think plenty of other lesbians also do as well. It's part of the "sexually attracted to women thing.

>The yuri fans that expect purity are probably guys.
Women would be into something creepy like that.

Anyway: most yuri is "aimed at guys" in that whoever makes it has men as their primary demographic, but for a lot of reasons yuri is a more niche thing for men than yaoi is for girls, and thus it attracts a significant minority of gay grils.

>>
>>147837727
Why are old men so kawaii? It's like the opposite of girls. Girls get to be cute when they're young and men can't be cute until they're old and crippled unless they're fabio or in a boy band.
>>
>>147838207
It's the balance of nature, like yin/yang and shit. Little boys and old women are annoying and/or crazy, little girl and old men are cute, it's just how things work.
>>
>>147832320
It reads like someone trying WAY too hard to be "artsy" and not knowing how to do that in a fluent way, so they just end up drawing everything out awkwardly.

>"Her eyes are a blue of lapis lazuli"

This is not normal phrasing. There are many, many ways to phrase this that sound more normal. Here are a few possibilities:

Her eyes are the blue of lapis lazuli
Her eyes are as blue as lapis lazuli
Her eyes are lapis lazuli blue
Her eyes are a blue shade reminiscent of lapis lazuli (This one is kinda wordy and only suitable for certain kinds of protagonist)

The basic problem is the indefinite article 'a' doesn't make sense in the current wording. It implies one of many, rather than one specific. 'a blue of lapis lazuli' reads a bit like "one of many blues belonging to lapis lazuli"

Moving on to the next phrase

>"they gleam as such"

Overlooking the weird word order which again sounds like you're trying to be overly artistic, what does this even mean? Lapis lazuli is an opaque stone, not particularly gleamy. Even if you assume that they mean a cut and polished cabochon rather than the raw stone or pigment powder, it's not all that shiny. "Gleams like lapis lazuli" would be "is slightly reflective", unlike "gleams like an emerald" which would imply bright green sparks. Lapis lazuli is probably LESS shiny than eyes naturally are.

This may be getting long...

(continued from >>147839957 )

final phrase

>"albeit slightly obscured by sheepish eyelids"

Now, I'm the kind of nerd who uses the word albeit, so I can't knock them for that, especially if the viewpoint character is highly educated.

In the context of the whole sentence, it does still give the impression that they're triyng to pull out the fancy lingo. There's nothing actually wrong with 'albeit' or 'obscured', but by this point I don't trust their command of English.

I do take issue with 'sheepish eyelids'. It's awkward. Nobody says that. How are the eyelids themselves being sheepish? Her gaze might be, her attitude might be, her eyelids might hover half-closed in a sheepish manner, but it doesn't feel like an appropriate adjective to attach to the eyelids themselves.

Now, to keep beating a dead horse, I bring up the next screenshot...

>"To my undelight"

Personally I'd hyphenate that as un-delight, but that's just instinct, not a real rule.

Here we see some less grammatical, more conversational English, a hint of personality coming through. (undelight, after all, is not a 'real' word, certainly not the kind of fancy overwrought word used earlier) Slightly snarky, more human. It might be phrased differently if said by a different character, but I don't know this character, so it's fine.

Unfortunately

>"the ambrosial morning scent"

we suddenly jump right back into "I have a thesaurus and I'm not afraid to use it". Ambrosia, as well as being fancy-pants language again, is a fairly emotionally-charged word. It doesn't just mean a good smell, it means something AMAZING. It's a word you might use when describing your full reaction to the scent of the best coffee in the world. It's not a word to use offhandedly while walking away from something that smells kinda nice. If an ambrosial scent is being shut away, you should be staring at the door pathetically like a dog wanting to go out.

>"fades behind as I close the office door."

Fades behind what?
Behind is most commonly a preposition. Not 100% of the time, since, yes, you can _stay_ behind. I'm not sure you can _fade_ behind, though. So I feel like there's a word missing here. Fades behind me, perhaps.

Slight nitpick: Ren'Py doesn't encrypt anything. The "c" in "rpyc" stands for "compiled". Just saying this because some folk mistakenly believe they're concealing stuff by only distributing archives or .rpyc files when really both can be reverse-engineered pretty easily. It only stops someone who has no knowledge of how to use a command line (and even then the tool I linked above apparently has a GUI now).

Well, for starters EVN has the word English in it, which is the language this board speaks by default. The only reason that game was in English is because it got a translation. Otherwise most of us couldn't have even played it and understood it. So it might as well have been Chinese or Japanese at that point. EVN is for home grown stuff or things in native English. Plus, loli isn't allowed here so we shouldn't be talking about it anyway.
>>
>>147880607
>The only reason that game was in English is because it got a translation
By the creator himself. Does that still exclude it form being labeled as an evn simply because it originally came out in german?
>>
>>147880607
>Plus, loli isn't allowed here so we shouldn't be talking about it anyway.
Only explicit loli, same as any porn on a blue board. Discussion is totally fine.
>>
>>147880806
Discuss it then. I found nothing intriguing about it.
>>
>>147880236
The art is of a high quality regardless of whether it caters to your tastes or not. I don't judge based on whether something caters to me personally or not, I judge based on the overall quality of what I experienced. I would have no problems saying a bl evn is the best if I found it particularly impressive, despite not being into bl whatsoever.
>>
"Western VN" is a better term than "English VN." Discuss.
>>
>>147881705
Western made and in English maybe.
>>
>>147881585

So do I. It looks crude and unappealing, regardless of subject matter.
>>
>>147881705
WVN? sounds like a wrassling company
>>
>>147882004
And that's why it's fantastic.

Starting now I declare /evn/ to be rebranded as /wvn/, where men and women can freely discuss German loli games, Russian dating sims, SEA games with broken English, and no longer be bothered by lost souls searching for /vn/.
>>
>>147881705
I wouldn't particularly care if people wanted to attach the specific language in front of VN, but attempting to exclude it from discussion because of that would be silly. We barely talk about anything as it is and it's more about the creation of non-japanese, non-professional VN's than any real language barrier, especially if the VN has been translated to english.
>>
>>147882274
i don't like change
>>
>>147881585
I don't think you understand what "high quality" means in regards to art. The art is very clean looking and doesn't have freakish proportions. Disregarding style choices that put many people (me included) off, it's about on par with the bare minimum art quality for a commercial evn. And I'm not talking about lolis, I like lolis, the artstyle is just ugly.
>>
>>147882314

>>147882805

>>
>>147882805

It just occured to me today that despite a few people here praising it as one of the best WVNs ever made, I've never seen any detailed explanation of why. What makes it stand out?
>>
>>147882805
I have nothing to add and just want to see if the filters are still in place because I haven't thought of them in a while.

desu senpai baka
>>
>>147881705
Of course, if we use WVN and JVN like we use WRPG and JRPG, we'd have to be talking about some very different games.
>>
>>147882780
I would disagree. The artist clearly has a very strong understanding of anatomy, perspective, color theory, etc. and shows it off very well. I'd go beyond saying it meets the bare minimum art quality for a commercial evn and say it meets the minimum quality for a commercial jvn. I found the sprites based on real people and cgs to be especially impressive. I can understand why people might find the art unappealing as it introduces a number of foreign elements into a somewhat animeish style, but I would strongly disagree that it's due to a lack of quality.
>>
>>147883304
It annoys feminists.
Actually it doesn't because they've never heard of it. But if they had, it would definitely annoy them.
>>
>>147883596
I can't fucking stand it when people bring up "lmao feminists would HATE this" when I'm talking about h-games or ecchi shit. Literally the worst.
>>
>>147883304
People are just arguing about the art right now, but the music and writing is pretty phenomenal. It also has some really neat moments like the phoenix wright spoof, and it pokes fun at a ton of celebrities and political figures, but does so in a way that can be funny to people who don't even know who they are.
>>
>>147883747
Well, if they say that just because something's H, it's kind of dumb. As I understand it, in this case much of the point of the plot really is "lol, the child porn is made by children, so everyone trying to protect them is stupid and wrong!" isn't it?

Why is it impossible? No windows? No money?
>>
>>147917854
old-ass building with thick walls and busted ventilation, basically it'll be too expensive to install reular AC and you'd have to make a new literal hole in the wall.
It's much better now that the sun is on the other side from my flat though, time to do some devving.
>>
>>147918163
Why not buy a window unit or a standalone indoor unit with a venting duct that you can stick out any hole in the building or window? The part of the duct you stick outside is only a couple inches.

If you can't do that you could always do what I do and get a nice powerful fan, freeze a jug of water and stick it behind the fan and keep that thing glued to your ass all day. Also make trips to the WC every little while to wet your shirt and stick it on yourself. Feels amazing with a fan. I've got lots of experience living in 100+ degree F houses over the years. Stay hydrated.
>>
>>147918342
Depending on where you live and how the windows in your house/flat are designed, hooking up a window unit can be much more complicated than one expects.

Doable if you're dedicated, but between the cost of the thing itself and the amount of DIY needed to make it suitable, the fan, water, and ice cream is a more practical plan.
>>

then, when you get down to where you want to be, have certain dialogue points do this

I honestly think it's kind of sad to pay people to make art/music for you, it's one thing to have a team of people where everyone is equally cooperating, but this is just artists and musicians leeching off the system. They get paid to make art, sometimes even a share if the profit, what's the cost to them? This is why artists are scum and it's best to have one who's actually a part of development and invested in the project.
