I think pokemon differ by region. I live way out in the desert (New Mexico) and aside from the usual weak-ass shit, I've only been finding Safari-zone and fire-type pokemon. No water types, no electric types, no psychic types. Only bug or grass type I've seen is Paras. I don't think it's a coincidence.

Been out hunting today, captured a few gyms for my underrepresented Yellow team out in Northern Virginia.

>two closest gyms are controlled by instinct
>decide I don't want to lone wolf this shit and join instinct to back them up
>one of the gyms is guarded by SIX different people all with 400+ cp pokemon

From pokestops. How do you miss that much anyways? Regardless each pokestop nets 3-6 pokeballs. Leveling gets your more as well. Pokestops refresh every 5 minutes. I recommend finding an area with 3 or so and hangout for an hour. You'll get more than enough and perhaps some goodies.
