I've found theres 3 phases all mmo generals go through.

Phase 1 is when the game is usually first out or a major patch hits which changes things up. The thread is full of questions, people getting to know each other, personalities being developed and memes being born. I think most people consider this the best time of any general as shitposting is at an all time low and everyone is just having fun,

Phase 2 is when the game has been out for a few days and content drought starts to kick in. Most people in the thread know each other and friend circles start to form. People move away from playing with the thread and mostly just staying in their circles, statics form and content gets run hard. Personalities are developed and we usually know what to expect from a post based on it's image. New memes aren't born but rather existing ones are expanded on. Shitposting starts to form from the general boredom, avatarfags usually get targeted at this point as they're the easiest to attack. Some light drama at this point too with people quitting or friendships ending but nothing major.

Phase 3 is when you can officially say the thread is dead. Most people have moved on by now with only a couple of old players still around because they're in too deep to get out. The thread is now mostly used as a hang out point rather then people even playing the game anymore. Erp is no longer ironic and degeneracy reaches an all time high. No one really talks about the game anymore and it's mostly just a bunch of personalities talking to each other with attached images stopping the thread from falling off page 10. It's mostly just Second life with some mmo stuff at this point as people just hang around due to friendships.

No I'm not. I've never paid a dollar into anything Pay to Win.

I'm buying stuff that's purely cosmetic, or what I'd expect out of a sub fee.

F2P Model isn't bad, because of what it allows a game to be, some people who pay into it with static items and non RNG help this model be successful in a positive way.

But when people piss their money away on RNG, they ruin the system, because companies deem it ok to put low effort, no risk, low reward for the player boxes, in the shop, and then shove outfits and items that should be direct purchase, into these boxes, and then expect EVERYONE pay to win, cosmetic buyers, and average players to buy these boxes to get only a small chance of what they want.

It's ok to pay for a ton of outfits in a f2p game. They never expire, the developers had to work for it, and they provided you something that's worth exchanging for.

But it's not ok to buy RNG boxes, and paytowin items and scream out to the industry "HEY LOOK AT ME, MY WALLET IS FREE FOR YOU TO TAKE FROM! PLEASE JUST TAKE MY CREDIT CARD AND CHARGE AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE!"

The entire games industry is fucked from people buying RNG boxes, preorder bullshit, collectors editions, exclusives, and broken games.

All F2P MMOs have some kind of premium currency/microtransactions/RNG shit tied to them. Devs and publishers have realized it's more marketable than flat out subscription-based games.
The trend's been going on for at least 6 years by now and I don't see it going anywhere.
In my opinion, you just need to look for the game that executes this in a way that least offends you, I guess?
I don't mind dropping some dosh on features that are useful for myself, eg. wardrobe and extra outfits.

Mostly because idiots aren't willing to drop $13/month on a game, but then spend more than they would on a yearly subscription on shit that would otherwise be free, like cosmetics and inventory slots.
It's also a much safer option, if your game is on a subscription and it sucks you'll be forced to deal with it or you end up losing your only source of income as the players leave the game, however if your game is f2p with a bunch of cash shop shit, you can just release a new costume or a new rng box and literally print money.

It will go away if people 1. stop paying for it 2. outcry against it.

The outrage over the padded coat box made them change their best friend RNG box to HMcoin, which was a lot better.

But now they're back at it again, because people are restarting the cycle.

It's not really a problem if someone spends 1000$ on costumes, its static and eternal for the life of the game.

If everyone avoided the RNG boxes, and only bought outfits outright, then we'd never see RNG boxes with costumes and important items locked inside of them.

It's this passive attitude, and people that buy on impulse that have allowed these games to get worse and worse with low effort designs.

Lest we have to be reminded of the garbage releases like WatchDogs, Aliens, and Evolve.

Outcry and money can change things for the better. Remember Deus EX, Mankind divided? they cancled their bullshit preorder system after the major out cry and mass preorder canceling.

Every dollar spent in a game, is a vote towards the item you bought.

Every RNG box spent is a vote towards low effort, low reward, cheap trick development ideas.
Why put an outfit in the shop for 15$ when you can get hundreds of people to spend up to 1000$ or more trying to get it gambling?

That's why it's so fucked up, and deserves protest.

Literally every boss in a dungeon. If someone else is wearing and outfit i have, I swap to that just to be a goofball.
Sometimes I swap to an outfit just because I haven't worn it in a week.

I don't even have all the outfits I want yet.

But some people don't just collect and store. Some people buy a fuckton of outfits and wear them often.
