Leveling as a mage, is there a reason to buy spells like Scorch? I'm going frost spec, so why should I spend gold on fire/arcane spells?

You don't need to level nova, you only ever use rank 1. All extra ranks do is increase the tiny damage and mana cost. It's like 75-80 damage at max rank.

You can just by arrows from a vendor.

If you run out of shards mid-bg, you're fucked completely. No pet, no shadowburn, no HS. You might as well roll over and die.
The only way to gain shards is a channeled affliction ability that does no dps and you have to be channeling it while the target is dying. Why the fuck wasn't drain soul and drain life the same spell is beyond me. Why the fuck isn't there a destruction spell that lets you farm shards?

And arrows stack.

You can CC your target, but there's a chance that the CC will break while you're vulnerable, or that the target will pull even more mobs and kill you.
This is the warlock class flavor. It tastes bitter.

You can not run out of arrows or consumables as a hunter or rogue. They are literally vendor bought. Just run up to a vendor and buy them. Use your right click button.
And no, getting shards in pvp is impossible. You're liable to get counterspelled, interrupted, kicked, CCd, or your target might just run away because you're doing no fucking damage standing there like an autist with your channeled spell.
And when the BG ends, where do you end up? In a capital city or a low level zone, where there's no fucking mobs to get shards from.

And what do warlocks get in return for the price they pay with soul shards? Nothing. They get nothing in return.
Shadowburn is a 11 point talented spell with 15 second cooldown and a soul shard cost.
Fireblast is a trained ability on a 8 second cooldown. Same damage.

Or compare pyro and soul fire.
