re-added land bouncing. Is a bit goofy but I will try to make it so you can push up too high. The problem with addforce is you need to ensure your current vector is zero but that is simple enough to do.

nope. I am painting everything in photoshop but I work at a large enough resolution that it should look clean no matter what. the only real issue is when the resolution is very small it starts to not work so well because the mipmaps generated aren't great but that can be mitigated with trilinear filtering.

>>147518547
May I ask about the actual numbers? I would like to take the same approach for my sprites, but I'm new to arts and graphic design and don't know what resolutions should I have for the original, and for the in game picture. Currently I'm aiming for 64x64 assets, but I fear that the original wouldn't scale well if I don't draw it at the right resolution. That's why I thought I might create the original in a vector graphics program like Inkscape.

a sprite sheet or texture in general, or I guess any computer image I think, tends to work best when it is a squared power of 2. I don't know the history but I think this just also has to do with the bit processing power of machines.

but nowadays you can make sprites any damn size. plenty of games even that era had 42 pixel height, I think they just combined two sprites on top of one another for that effect. you could always do 32x that's a pretty nice size for simple sprites and they scale alright. If you get too big you might run into the problem KoF had where it could take you a year just to sprite one character because it's so large (they had insanely huge sprites though)
>>

> Ask for feedback
> Is given feedback

> 'Nah that feedback is shit and invalid'

Kys.
>>
>>147518593
Why's that bad? It first explains how to get an image into SDL. This is the part where he talks about surfaces. Then he explains how you can display that image as a texture, thus using GPU power, which is when you create a rendering context from said surface. If you read about this issue, you'll see that there's no workaround it. You have to load it to a surface then create a texture from it, then you copy that texture to the renderer. Don't forget to destroy the surface after you've created a texture from it.

Really, the first 20-25 tutorial is more than enough for a start. You don't even need timers or gamepad inputs for first, so all in all you need ~10 chapters (I personally saved 6 and used as reference).

Unity's camera (if in perspective mode) seems to automatically scale the image but I tried pixel art in unity once before and it is not fun.

when I tried some stuff in LOVE2D the way that had to be done is you set a resolution and then you could scale the entire window with an inbuilt function. It depends on what engine you're using. I imagine gamemaker might have something like that too. Pixel art games will have to lock their aspect ratio too.

then again if you're using a point and click engine like the adventure game studio I thin it's called it actually has none of those functions inbuilt r even possible I think so make sure you research whatever engine you're working on.

Nice try mate. I gave you an example of how blood looks on the ground. Splattered down, following a pattern which is logical to the situation.

Your image didn't contain a pattern nor was it logical.

You didn't specify the ground was snow nor is it to be seen that way. Your blood is black and nót red and it doesn't contain any shading.

There you go. Feedback.

Yeah, artists tend to not know how much work implementing a specific feature takes ("MMOs are easy, right?"), just like how developers sometimes have no idea of the time an artist would need to spend illustrating an aspect of the game ("art for a fighting game character is easy, right?").

The trick is communication until you both agree on what exactly you're going to work on. A common design document helps.

Should I center the origin of all object sprites in GameMaker?
I guess it makes calculations easier but it feels wrong somehow.
>>
>>147533623
Collisions should use bbox, not the origin point.

Otherwise, centering your origin lets you rotate and flip sprites in a way that looks good. I'd advise against it if you need to place the object in question on a grid in your room editor, though.

There may be other consequences/advantages I'm not aware of.
>>
>>147532452
you could put your UI there
>>
>>147533623
It's good for sprites that you want to rotate or mirror, since you can't set any other anchor for those functions.
I don't think you'd be using the sprite's origin point for too many calculations anyway, so that's not a super big problem.

Battleships Forever, an old free RTS. The game itself had vector-styled art, but the community churned a shitload of prefab sprites for making your own ships, some of which I've used here.

I recall the guy who made this sprite pack ripped and modified them from side-scrolling mech games like FM:GH, which makes my sprites doubly or triply illegal (or it could be written off as remixing).

Sure go ahead. If you've got a procedural dynamic gas-planet generator with pornographic results with heaps of detail and like to make management and exploration games.

If you need to hand design everything instead, don't, you're never going to make a pretty planet without some serious procedural generation.

depends on where the n-gons are and what you're doing with the model; it's gonna get triangulated anyway in the engine automatically, so you're best bet is to leave them until the model is completely done, then triangulate them such that each triangle is roughly the same shape and area, or at least as close as possible.
>>
>>147537879
2D*
>>
I usually find a workaround for this problem some way or another, but now I'm really curious how it's supposed to be done if there's any specific way.

When I move my character in 2D space, I always check at a key press if the place he would like to move to is free or not (with tiles it's pretty simple to do), and if it's taken, I just block his movement to that direction. However he usually sees the object way before actually getting right next to it, which will result in a gap between the player and the taken tile.

What's the right way to avoid this issue?

It depends entirely on what the model is for. If it's a first person view model, then maybe yes, because the cylinders will be visible when the player is reloading. If it's a third person model then no.

Ask yourself some questions, like, what is this model for? From what perspective and distance from the player will it be seen? etc

Also more tris doesn't equal better. You won't get anything usable in a game that way and you won't learn anything about actual modeling if you keep doing that.

You should be either learning traditional box modeling and trying to do relatively low poly shit with it focusing on what you can do by manipulating those few vertices or learning sculpting and going down from there.

>Optimizing single manager class by making it static
No, there's little to no difference between an instance and static class function executions.
Don't even think about optimization until you actually run into performance issues. Focus on clean code design and rapid development.

ive had minor hicups, i have a chunk loader and since ive got so many mechanics referencing a master script it causes small lag spikes when loaded in the first time, the majority is from animations initialising but i think i have a way of fixing that, my start functions could be shorter if i used a static class since i wouldnt have to get the component ever time but i wondered if there were any downsides to doing this

Tell us more about your system. It's tough to advise without knowing more.

In general, though, static classes are very useful for being able to reference that one particular thing regardless of where you are in your code. Managers make for great candidates for static classes because there should be only one manager, and that manager should be accessible without having to pass around or track down references to an instance. It's less an issue of performance as it is utility -- though, you can probably make claim about memory usage and garbage collecting.

However, Unity lacks some freedom in inspecting static classes, so I sometimes find myself creating Managers as Components or Monobehaviours and adding a static component that enables trivial access to the instance. I often attach these do DontDestroyOnLoad gameobjects.

This sort of thing can be dangerous when you have the possibility of multiple manager instances or no-guarantee of instance, but you have the freedom to catch newly instantiated managers, merge their fields, destroy extras, and instantiate new instances when none exist but a reference is requested.

Shorter waiting times, with quick-time events. Something like:

>Waiting for fish between 1-5 seconds
>Arrow keys flash over the float
>Depending on how hard the fish is to catch you could change how quickly you'd have to enter the keys, or how many.
>You could also have some kind of meter on the top so that the player would have to success with 3+ events in a row before the fish is caught to make sure he doesn't "overfish"

good advice, heres the gist of how they work though, i have a few managers for specific game mechanics, for example i have a manager which changes a bool to true or false on a timer, which is referenced by platforms which change them to be active or inactive depending on the timer, as they are they all have to reference the manager via a find with tag and get the script

there is only one manager for and it will always be present in the scene, my thinking is just make it static and then i dont have to use start functions and save small amounts on cpu when a chunk loads, would there be any downsides to this?

I changed the giga crab battle. Before his only real interesting part was he got super pissed and attacked very quickly at certain health thresholds. However, I wanted to add a new little thing to the boss since I felt it was a bit too simple, so now he summons a crab at certain health thresholds too! But combined with the old pissy boss mode fighting the crab and him was an absolute nightmare, so I slowed the boss down a little when he does get pissy.
Though it might still be too much considering I died and all. It is the intro boss, don't want it to be too sadistic yet.

Much, much better

One thing though, is now the level of mesh detail on the barrel is too low, at least compared to other areas of the revolver. For example, the front end of the frame, where the cylinder is held in place. You should have less mesh detail/fewer sides on smaller parts and more mesh detail/lmore sides on larger parts.

A+ effort for a newbie though

Have you used the profiler to see what's taking up your time?

Well, lets see if I have this down right: your level has platforms. You want a centralized manager to signal to these platforms whether or not they are allowed to move. The manager presumably hosts a timer, and that timer is used to determine what flags are set when.

Essentially, the manager acts as a stoplight. All of the platforms look at the stoplight (do different platforms have different timings?) and go when it says go, and they stop when it says stop.

----
Some small considerations:

Are the platforms running their own scripts? If so, why not put the timer/flag inside each platform? Surely, you don't have millions of platforms. Just get rid of the manager.

Are the platforms running their own scripts? If so, why not get rid of those scripts? Have the platform manager move the platforms. Do the platforms need to register themselves in the manager? Disable the script after it's been registered.

----
Another thing: static scripts don't receive updates, unless you create a Monobehaviour that calls it to update.

Suggestions:
-Increase the interval between attacks
-Crab summoning should be its own attack.
-One move per attack and high health; but at low health make each attack consist of the same move multiple times in quick succession (thee claw strikes, three bubbles, three crab minions, etc.)
-Make the claw strike send out a slow sand shockwave that travels across the arena. That way the player can't stand on the side of the screen and shoot.
-Add a little target around your main character when the crab uses its mortar bubble attack.
-When the bubble is above the camera, put an arrow at the top of the screen pointing where the bubble is going to descend from.

That should make it more challenging and less unpredictable.

Otherwise, it looks great so far. Keep us updated!

Thanks for the suggestions! I actually was thinking of making a sand wave but the giga crab was originally just a lowly mini-boss so I figured the stun in combination with the bubbles was enough, but now that he's been promoted I might add it back. Seems kind of overkill along with the stun though.
I'm not gonna add anything to indicate where the bubbles fall though. I think the player should be able to figure out that they fall where you're standing. And I also don't want to make the crabs a normal attack because the crabs skitter around randomly and fighting multiples at once along with the boss is a recipe for frustration. He used to summon 2 but it was just too much along with the stun. Even one can be really annoying if you don't manage to kill it quickly enough!

Stunning the enemies is fun, but getting stunned as the player rarely is. I think you could afford to scrap the mechanic altogether, at least for this attack (assuming you're adding a sand wave as a replacement.)

What I'm worried about re: bubbles is that the player might not have enough time to react. Unless they need to be moving constantly to dodge - ehhh - they barely have half a second between the moment the bubble shows up at the top of the screen and the moment it hits the ground. If you really don't want to add a marker, you could at least make the bubbles fall at 50%-70% speed, see if it makes a difference.

If crabs staying for too long is a problem, couldn't you just make the boss scare the remaining ones back into the sand after a certain amount of time, when it's ready to use another attack?
(Maybe they just burrow back in by themselves, or maybe the boss hops in place to signal it. You could simply use the burrow-out animation in reverse for that.)
That way, you can just avoid the crabs for a moment to survive, or risk fighting them for a few free shots on the boss if you're done before the timer runs out.

Oh I wanted to do that, but I don't want any trouble since I'm not gonna pay for incorporation right away since it's like 1000$+ and you have a to file a lot of paperwork. If I don't do that, it's sole proprietorship with no limited liability, meaning if I get sued, I'm fucked. We don't have LLCs in Canada.

I'm pretty sure he couldn't sue me because it's parody but I don't even want to risk it. So you get "generic businessman fighting against generic minorities" instead.

In gamemaker, what's the most efficient way of determining a specific instance ID of something that's created using instance_create (rather than created at the room start)?
I use to use instance_nearest to determine it but that can end up putting a lot of chance into RNG where I'd rather have complete control.

I have no idea if I'm explaining this correctly. I'm sorry.

This is a joke right? I refuse to believe that this guy was serious about it. It's just a fucking star ffs
>>
>>147549806
Hell yeah! You should space the stars out by a pixel though, if they're right next to each other the black outlines are fused together and it looks weird.

Give >>147548687 's star a shot too, maybe it fits in better.

>>147550280

Awesome job dude. Do you mind if I steal it back, just in case?

>>147550247
You can use
my_object = instance_create(x,y,obj_instance)
to identify specific objects at creation. Maybe it will help.

Yeah there is, but it's a much older version so there's quite a few differences. If you still wanna play it it's here:

Scrapping the stun would mean retooling a lot of the boss though. Besides even though it may not be particularly fun, well, I'm a little bit of a sadist developer so that doesn't bother me too much. I like the stun in the battle since, combined with the tracking bubbles and the crabs, you gotta keep on your toes and try to avoid getting stunned; I think it makes a nice little challenge. I feel like the bubbles would lose a lot of their impact as well: you may say it's hard to react to but they're really not. Yeah reacting to the bubble itself falling is a little tricky but you can see the crab shake and then fire it, so you know it's coming. Without the stun they would be a nuisance at best and a complete nothing at worse. Same with slowing them down; if I slowed them down they wouldn't be able to reach the player while they're stunned. And sure it might bother some people that you can get hit by a bubble while stunned but that's the point: you need to avoid getting stunned in the later phases of the fight so you don't get hit by a bubble.
Demo day's coming up soon so I'll be looking for feedback then; if people thing it's too hard/not fun then I'll definitely change it, especially since it's the first boss and all, but right now I wanna stick to my guns. Despite the game's cute look I've never intended it to be easy after all.

How do you guys promote your game?
How do you get followers and people spreading the name via word of mouth?
What hashtags or PR techniques do you use?

if you want to show how tough you are on the internet add how many downloads or purchases you've gotten so we know if your ideas are good or not
>>
>>147550068
Cool I hope it's helpful. And don't psyche yourself out about getting into it. I saw that like daily when I was tutoring college kids, they decided it was impossible without even really engaging. I don't know why people get so worked up like they've got PTSD about math, but you're just working against yourself if you've decided it's too hard from the get-go. (not really addressing you personally, maybe you're not like this I'm just rambling)

Aseprite is very good and made specifically for pixel art. It offers a lot of features for pixel art and animation. It also has RotSprite which is a better rotation method for pixel art (still not perfect, but better than standard rotation)
