Unity c# scripting is what you are learning, it's a language for all intents and purposes, that's why it has a scripting API and documentation.

I like the second one better for clarity, but it takes more space. My code usually fits the screen though, so that's not a problem, but I'd understand using the first in order to see more code at once.

Ideally I'd say gameplay-changing and special tech should be plot based (AND SCALE WITH THE LEVEL, PLEASE), whereas regular "higher damage output" tech should be acquired through level ups.

I know C++ to a somewhat apprentice-ish undergraduate student level and have been studying it and SFML from "Programmiing principles and practice" book and that ePackt "SFML game development" book, but I can't look at C++ code any longer because I burned out, stopped studying and didn't look at any C++ code for like 6 months, and the thought of going over it all again makes me wanna hurl.

Another reason is I want to learn a language you can script in linux with.

Suddenly some of the materials, specifically the beam material and blood-meat material has started "infecting" thumbnails: None of the objects these thumbnails are supposed to show have these mats in them, and yet they're there.

Making a shmup in GM and I can't decide how to tackle enemy spawning.

I could make each level one huge-ass room and hand-place enemy 'spawners' that spawn enemies when the player gets close then destroy themselves.

Or I could make a tiny room and a master 'Director' for each level that manages a fuckhuge switch statement that specifies what enemies to spawn, where and what they do.

What do? Each seems to have its own set of advantages and drawbacks.

Gamemaker seems fine... I think it gets a bad rap but it's actually pretty fucking good especially if you're making simpler games.

planning too much kills games. You lose enthusiasm for your plans if you let them sit too long. That enthusiasm you have when you're writing the idea down dissipates after a few weeks or months. It's best to work aimlessly and scrap things that don't work.

you make the kind of game that pulls bits from everything you enjoy. then you keep a short to-do list and force yourself to work on whatever's at the top of that list.

>>
>>147454153

I think planning is both an asset and a hinderance.

If you spend all this time actually trying to figure out how the game is going to function it makes building it systematic and modular. You just implement feature after feature in a fairly sterile way.

If you go "Lets try and make something" stuff usually grows organically. You can come up with concepts that may suit the game better or the game may become something else entirely.

Both are fine ways to proceed, and I think a mix of both is good. Start by making it, then occasionally stop and flesh out some ideas, then implement them works best for me.
>>
>>147454703

I have all ideas in my head. I note down general issues and solutions I come up with if I come up with them in isolation. Like, life leech, in video games it tends to suck ass, be op or simply be something the game requires you use so it's practically a normal defensive stat.

So I solved that. Noted it down and don't have a game where I can use it yet. Its saved though.

The 2D in unity is kind of shit and limited. Unity's in engine stuff for collisions and physics are pretty fucking terrible so you're going to be getting external stuff or making your own, especially if you want like rope physics.

You had shit like Bucky O'hare, Swat Katz, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, all existing without being "furry"

Now this guy makes a dog mega-man and everyone loses their fucking shit. I get it, furries are degenerates, but just having an anthropomorphic character doesn't immediately make it furry.

They'll obviously debase his character for their own whims, but that's neither here nor there.

Probably, especially if you remove the RPG elements.

Make stats tied to cybernetic implants.
Lots of cool weapons, emphasize the rally system to make healing less reliant on bloodvials.

Hell add a grappling hook. Grappling hooks always make awesome gameplay.

Okay. I'm going to speak up and actually get to heart of the matter regarding your character's boxers. Could you please listen?

The problem isn't with your dog dude. Keep him! He looks good, and we're used to dog people. We've grown up surrounded by anthropomorphic animals. People fucking love Bugs Bunny or Sonic.
But get this: these characters either wore nothing at all, or they wore full clothing, or they wore minor accessories like shoes and stuff.

The problem here is the boxers. Here's the thing: they draw attention to what's between your character's legs. Which is why people are uncomfortable. That's literally it.

Arthur from Ghost and Goblins wears nothing but underwear when down to his last HP -- and it works because we're used to seeing dudes in underwear and we consider it funny. It'd be like him trying to cover his dick, which would also be funny (though not as safe for work).

But we're not used to this on furry characters. If your dog dude tried to cover his dick when down to his last HP people would be similarly uncomfortable, because that's how the non-furry audience work today.

If you're OK with alienating said audience by implicitly drawing attention to the dog dick hidden by those dog boxers, sure, go ahead. However, you will need to accept that ~75% of AGDG comments will be about this, and a similar majority of potential players will see this dog wearing nothing but boxers and immediately nope the fuck out.

There's no right or wrong here. It's your choice. But you gotta be aware of what's going on here.
>>
>>147457963
>>furries come to agdg because they're furries
Where's the logic in this? Oh right, I'm trying to reason with a mentally ill person. Sorry about that.
>>
>>147457963
>the rest of us come here because other reasons like having certain issues
You're right, I'm hating because my father didn't love me, skinned my dog and force fed me a hotdog, literally.

Or maybe we're just giving valid criticism because his game actually has potential. You don't see people replying to other shit looking games with shitty characters.

Yeah thats what I'm saying.

If you pick a dex weapon, you're pumping dex to 40.

If you pick a str weapon you're getting at least 40 strength.

It's why I hate the SL Meta. It just means you can get everything. You never have to think. You get 40 in your scaling stat, enough attunement and magic/faith to get DMB/Sunlight Blade/Crystal Magic weapon or whatever else and you never have to think or make a decision.

Every build comes down to the same shit and it gets boring. It's not even about Min/Maxing, it's just the way the game is built.

Without the grass underneath people desire more graphics because all you have is floating tiles.

With only the grass platforms underneath, people desire a movement grid for input clarity.

Using both, you have more 3D graphics with dirt/platforms underneath the playing space tiles, and tiles for the player to use as a grid.

There has been some salty dude from last night posing as me barking about nodevs lately so mind you not all posts are really me lately.

I use FL studio with a bunch of soundfonts. I use NI Massive and a bunch of drum samples for electronic stuff.
Can you do it? Yeah you can. I asked the same question as you 3 years ago on agdg and i've turned out okay. I had played guitar for 5 years before, but that didn't give me anything besides confidence that i liked doing music. I also knew pretty much no theory back then, just playing tabs.

The key to making good music is not to learn a bunch of theory, but to listen and study other music. Turn on a track and think of what instruments are there and what they're doing. Is there a flute playing a melody with a harp playing arpeggios underneath and a glockenspiel accenting the beats? Okay, maybe try to do something like that next time you compose.

Sometimes you'll have to know exactly where the tiles are, for example when switching between the lines of fire of two mine launchers.
Other times you can just roll around and not worry about going one tile too many in one particular direction.
That's where grass would fit best. You could associate it with restful/low-danger areas too.

A game where you open loot crates. You get a couple free loot crates every day when you log in. Each loot crate has a rarity between common and legendary, and a special godly rarity. The usual crates contain procedurally generated loot, and the godly crates have an increased chance to generate a brand new loot which makes your copy a special unique foil loot.

There is a limit on how many free crates you get per day but the first few days you get to open a couple more. You can buy loot crate loot crates for cash, which contain 3 loot crates of a random rarity and one guaranteed uncommon or higher.

Loot parts, loot crate parts and loot crate loot crate parts can be crafted by breaking down 5 respective items of the same rarity, letting you craft a higher tier item. Godly/Unique crates and loot can't be broken down. Players can trade these parts as well as loot, loot crates, loot crate loot crates, and there are leaderboards for those who collect many loots, many unopened crates, those who open many crates per day, those who have many duplicate loots, etc.

Give the Map class a static function that takes in a current position/tile, and a desired movement direction, and internally tests to see if its allowed, and returns a bool. Then your entity classes can just call

FYI a Map is also the name of a type of container, like an array or list

l've thinked over it is possible, you would need tons of data of 3d creature models to train a neural net that recognizes 3d creature models

A neural net is like a mathematical function, a VERY long function, in theory you could turn that function the other way around so that instead of classifying creatures it 'makes' them. Although l don't know if that'd be too much for a computer
>>
>>147463534
Oh, yeah, that could work.
It's better than my idea of just giving every entity object a pointer to the current map...
>>
>>147463595
Tile-based collision is the easiest. Assuming you're keeping a 2D array of each spot on the grid just check when something moves if the tile it's moving to at X or Y +1/-1 is free. If yes, move, if not, don't.

Maybe he's not using tile based movement?
>>
>>147463569
Static means you can call code without having an instance of the class.

Like normally you would have to go

>TheMapClass myMapClassInstance = new TheMapClass()

But if you use the 'static' modifier when declaring the function:
>public static bool IsMovementAllowed(TilePosition currentPosition, Direction desiredDirection)

Then you can call the IsMovementAllowed() function from the class directly, without an instance

>TheMapClass.IsMovementAllowed(blah, blah)

The only problem is, with a static function, you only have access to fields which are static, so you wouldnt be able to see the array of tiles you mentioned, unless it too was static (variables can be static as well as functions). Or, you can create a static variable of the MapClass, which points to an instance of MapClass, which is the Singleton pattern.

I mean, depending on what language you're using. Probably not in GameMaker or something.

You can apply pre-existing Image Effects to the camera in unity, fish eye lens is one of them, BUT it affects everything the camera sees, so if you wanted it on just one element but not the rest of the scene, maybe you could do something like putting the sprite as a texture onto a 3d model, and then scaling up the model such that the texture would stretch and blow up

I made a little button wheel thing. There's a button for swapping between active weapons, so you can attack with left hand weapons, and a button to parry/block.

There are two more spaces for buttons. One will be to open the spell list when I add spells, I dunno what the final button will be.

Also some other changes, like a stupid "your turn" thing that doesn't fit the tone of the rest of the game.

From what I remember, you controlled the sword directly (there were arm and body models though). At every turn you had a set of cards, like "rotate 90 degrees", "advance", "shield" stuff like that, then one turn at a time you got close to your opponent and strike. It sounds bizarre but it looked pretty fun.

So got a shitton of meds prescribed (20 bucks and it will last me for 6 months if it won't go away, except the cough medecine which was like 15 bucks which might last a month) and now i'm cozy af and revving up the devving tiime.

Here's some creatures I made with a genetic algorithm. They have a genome of ~250 genes, which are used to generate the body structure, limb size and muscle activations.
At the moment they're only graded on the distance they cover and there's no feedback into their brain yet, but I think it already looks pretty cool.

Start by writing down what you want to accomplish with your game. Whether that's tell an interesting story about X, make the player feel vulnerable or powerful, try out a mechanic, etc.

Once you have that you should start planning out exactly how you're going to achieve that. Gameplay mechanics, a script, controls, etc. Then you start to program the mechanics and see if it's working as expected.

They sort of flail their limbs around to wiggle forward, the webm runs at 10x real speed.

Stopping the evolution from abusing the physics engine is the hardest part, as soon as a creature discovers an unstable configuration, everything soon devolves into flailing pile of limbs flying around at lightspeed.

If you want to make a 3D level out of modular pieces, how do you avoid seams/cracks when placing them?
>>
>>147470401
you make pieces that line up or intersect nicely

so you probably don't want to make terrain out of pieces, but structures with right angled walls in standard sizes etc
>>
>>147470401
For the most part they should be built in a grid like fashion to avoid such a situation. But some games use generic meshes like pillars to cover up seams.

And worst case scenario you have to make a unique mesh to bridge objects that aren't fitting together well.

Please critique my game concept.

An alien lands on Earth, hoping to find true love. However, all he finds is heartbreak when his girlfriend cheats on him. Overcome with fury, he kills her and her lover and becomes a fugitive.

While on the run, he falls in love with a sweet girl whose farm he hides on. When the police find him, she's shot while helping him escape.

As he drives away through the night, he crashes his car and has to walk to the next town. As he walks, his surroundings become more bizarre and fantastic, and eventually grotesque and hellish. His vision narrows and darkens to nothing. His heartbeat slows and stops.

Christian imagery and teachings are seen and heard throughout the game but ignored by the protagonist. The final image is of the alien, flayed and crucified in a vision of Hell. The camera zooms out to reveal hundreds--nay, thousands--of suffering people as a disturbing yet funky electronica tune plays.

The game ends on a quote: "If thy hand scandalize thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life, maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into unquenchable fire." (Mark 9:43)

Please critique my game concept.

A boy falls in love with a girl.
Unable to confess, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with the girl’s phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day’s confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn’t exist in this universe at all. She is the girl’s alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC’s own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, GAME ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

Stupid question for GMS Devs. Is the room the same as the camera (what is seen on screen at any given time)? Or is it more a map that loads in its entirety?

Was the overworld map of A Link to the Past a huge room or a set of smaller rooms in a tile set?

I really need to clarify this, please.

In GMS, views are the camera. The actual room's dimensions are mostly irrelevant (since views/objects/etc. can all be outside of the room's area and still work fine). The room dimensions are just used for the built in room editor.

I have no idea how ALttP was implemented. If I were to make it in GMS I'd go for the map grid approach for the overworld (so a bunch of rooms with some way to track which room you should go to next when you walk off the edge of the screen).

You're still likely right. XML is easy to parse even if it's a fucking waste in most scenarios.

This guy must be trying to do it from scratch or something, without a library to go from XML document -> tree. Actually, XML -> tree is easy and tree -> level is easy, he's probably trying to smash both of them together.

Once you learn how to get around json, it will be easier in the future. It's not a complete waste of time.

Enginedev is fine as long as it's for a specific game. Otherwise you just end up running in circles and getting shit-all done because you're trying to make everything overly generic and fit all possible use cases (how can you even think of all use cases?)

This guy mentioned "context sensitive" data being an issue which makes me think that he's not making a game. If so, he would be the one providing the context in the first place.

I have an idea for a game. It's kind of like Hitman (social stealth) but top down and some differences.

You gotta assassinate your target but you play as some demonic spirit rather than a human. Instead of finding disguises or taking them off people, you can instead possess anyone (think Driver San Fransisco) and use that to make your way through levels. In a perfect world I'd make it to have multiple different ways to assassinate the target like in Hitman (accidents, stealth, combat (probably not combat actually)).
Game will score you either by your detection (like hitman), your time spent (so less focus on clean kills but as quickly as possible since you're a spirit and notoriety doesn't exist), or a combination of both.
Still not sure of a failure state however since you can't die being a spirit and all.

Would you play a game like this? I'm imagining a style with similarities to Monaco but a little less colorful. I should probably make a design doc if I can cement that I want to make this.
