Why the fuck y'all so lazy edition
>>
Thread seems pretty dead, but dumb renpy question:
Main menu music won't play. No error message, just no sound.
config.main_menu_music = "menusong.mp3"

Things that aren't the problem:
>I didn't mute anything
>The filename is typed properly
>it's in the main game directory folder (though maybe it needs to be somewhere else? no idea)
>nothing regarding music or sound is hashtagged out when it shouldn't be
>I tried adding "init python:
config.debug_sound = True" didn't do shit.

I can't find any solution to this.
>>
>>147259310
Are you sure you didn't mute the audio inside the game? Is your default volume level set to 0? Is your file correctly formatted to be mp3? Does your mp3 have any uppercase letters?
>>
>>147260335
No. I actually just tried, and music inside the game plays absolutely fine. I just played the menu song in the game, worked fine. No uppercase letters, the file seems to play fine, the volume isn't set strangely. I have no idea what the problem is.
>>
>>147260601
Dunno man, are you on an old version that might have had a bug? Best bet would be to ask on the lem forums.
>>
>>147260972
I'm on the latest version.
>>
>>147260601
Maybe that specific .mp3 file's encoding is fucked in a way so ren'py can't play it? Try using one of the files that already works as gameplay music for the main menu.
>>
>>147256442
>Why the fuck y'all so lazy edition
Because we are actually working, for once.
>>
>>147259310
Did you do anything else weird to configure the main menu that might cause it to not look at that particular config note?

Did you uncomment it? (stupid but hey)

Try altering other codes nearby to be sure that section is being called and not overridden by something.
>>
>>147262089
Well I figured it out. It was literally just the options script being fucking retarded and somehow not understanding that I had made changes to it. I've had problems with that before so I guess that explains it.
>>
>>147262264
Something like that happened to me while using the reload script command. Apparantly changed something while loading and renpy got stuck with the older version. Had to modify the file and save it again for the program to recognize the change.

i'm torn between eyerolling at how people call absolutely anything they dislike 'manly' even if it involves giant naked H-cup tits, and critiquing the parts of the chest that do look a bit weird.

like the combination of the way the boobs are shaded and the emphasis lines with the compression caused by that top, seems physically a little weird somehow? that top is designed to press in, and she's clearly nowhere near flat, but the boobs don't seem to be reacting to it? I don't know. Clothes are hard.

In renpy, how to you make the song repeat faster? In the game there's always a short but noticeable pause after the track ends but before it repeats. It's not the music itself, if I make it replay in other software it's instant.
>>
Looks like the people bitching about Tao not finishing Dizzy Hearts yet has gotten a reaction. He's decided to put Toko on hold until next year to complete Dizzy Hearts first, since Toko would've slowed down Dizzy Heart's completion. That's good news for kickstarter backers, but I bet Steam users will be pissed.
>>
>>147283945
I think nobody here gives a fuck any more a this point.
>>
>>147284280
It was literally just a few days ago on this thread that people where complaining about Dizzy Hearts not being released while they worked on other games. He also made a comment about people thinking they're not working as hard as they could, so it sounds like people bitching here caused him to change his development plans.
>>
>>147285117
>caused him to change his development plans.
i wouldn't flatter yourself so much.

i think it's a bad decision either way. why spend time on an art revamp and VA for toko chapter one, just to say the sequel is another 2 years in the works?
>>
>>147272919

Sunrider Academy is on a really big discount. It's shit, but if you're into it, good time to pick it up.

The Way We All GO and Asphyxia are both really cheap and the author's works are usually okayish, certainly okay enough for $1.50.

Science Girls isn't a VN but it's a buck so if you want to see someone abuse RenPy to make an RPG, there it is.

Impulse is 60% off which isn't bad but it's TyranoBuilder so honestly I'm still waiting for a higher discount

That's about it for the best discounts (not necessarily the best games) although honestly if you don't own it already, screw the EVNs and buy The House in Fata Morgana instead.

Improve your drawing and redraw chars. Repeat as many times as necessary.

Alright. Being a retard at writing stories. Is it a good idea to have a narrator in a VN? I don't play many of them, but I really want to make one. I have no explanation for that, but here I am. I'm thinking of having a narrator that persists through the entire VN making comments here and there. Is this a terrible idea? Should it just be the characters talking to each other?
>>
>>147320382
Reality is the worst.
>>
>>147320676
No, Not a bad idea. I remember a few JVNs that do that. It's just less common than the ordinary first person narrative.
>Should it just be the characters talking to each other?
You are always going to need some sort of glue to keep it together. Be that the narrator's voice or the MC inner monologue, both serve the same purpose. Of course nuances in perspective vary.
>>
>>147320815
So brave it and make me proud, dammit!
>>
>>147321095
Thanks. I guess I really need to just play some VNs. I feel like I'm diving into the deep end here without knowing how to swim.
>>
>>147321160
Always the best for /evn/. Just don't say too many terrible things about my game or me if I ever release anything. Please.
>>
>>147321175
Yeah you do that. Saya no Uta uses third person perspective, if you are interested. For a more EVN experience try the pastebins. Also go read at least a few routes from Katawa Shoujo since is basically the standard by which you'll get measured. Try UAB if you are not offended by lolis (patrician taste tip: you shouldn't be).
>>
>>147321537
>Saya no Uta uses third person perspective, if you are interested.
Thanks, I'll check them out.
Also lolis offend me very much. Death to loli.
>>
>>147320676
Why do you want a narrator?

First person or third person, past tense or present tense depends on the theme you're going for. Third person creates a level of distance to the story etc.
>>
>>147321935
I want to have a narrator for a couple of reasons. I started writing the script in a text file and automatically added bits that were read by a narrator because it felt natural. I want to be able to speak to the reader from an angle that wouldn't be obvious from the viewpoint of the main character, break the fourth wall, explain the world, etc. I also want the reader to feel like they're part of the story, so I almost don't want to ruin that feeling by adding a narrator. I hope that made some kind of sense. I'm not sure if a narrator is an easy way to break immersion or not. If they don't feel like part of the story, the magic is kinda lost.
>>
>>147321705
Saya no Uta has loli. Sort of. Just a heads up.
>>
>>147322426
That's cool. I was just messing around.
Also, anything for science right?

How much money do "good" artists generally charge for a full project? Like, for ten characters, each with four different poses/expressions or whatever (happy, sad, surprised, angry)?

Is $20,000 a good price range for that kind of work for the artist? Tried looking at the OP but couldn't find much on actual price ranges people generally charge.
>>

while I am not the god of this thread, I'd say that it would be mostly best only to talk about abstract and technical details and not to comment on the plot, which both risks random spoilers and veering into discussion which has nothing to do with development.

Discussing a technical effect done in a JVN and how/whether to pull it off yourself is obviously on-topic.

Discussing what a gut-punch it was when it turned out Mariko was fucking Hiroshi is not.

Uses totally different parts of your brain. Look on Twitch and you'll see artists carrying on conversations with their chat while drawing. How much time are you spending at the gym anon? Are you one of those people spending hours upon hours at the elliptical? A year ago I decided to start lifting and all told I spend less than 2 hours a week working out following the Rippetoe routine, and in the past 2 years I have muscled up from from 150 lbs with 25% body fat to 160 lbs with 10% body fat (so I lost 20 lbs of fat and gained 30 lbs of muscle). This was after years of trying to lose fat through hours on the treadmill and other cardio, at one point I was running 1 mile every day and my weight was still pretty stagnant. High intensity exercise for a short duration seems to be way more effective than low intensity exercise for a long duration.

Also, could just be that I started lifting around the time that I finished school and got a "real" job, but it also seems to have improved my sleep as well. I used to stay up every night until like 4 AM and then wake up at 9 AM (couldn't sleep in even if I tried), always felt perpetually tired, now I fall asleep every night at around midnight without any trouble and get a solid 7.5 hours per night. I sleep more but I get more work done because when I was insomniac the hours from midnight to 4 AM could never be productive time for me because I was too mentally tired to do anything creative but not physically tired enough to fall asleep.

It really depends, doesn't it? You clearly follow them more closely than I do, so you probably know more about them. I don't know if they're streaming all the art being created from scratch, or not. I don't really care, since the faces just look like a poorly done Ishikei clone and the bodies have wonky anatomy. If they do show the entire process, perhaps they are indeed legit. Maybe they even changed artists. I wouldn't know. Anything less is probably just them throwing scraps to the pigeons.

It's like posting in a thread for novel writers. You're never going to get any progress other than "I wrote 2,000 words today!" It just feels so distant. In threads like /agdg/ evil as it may be, you have devs who post progress constantly. They post their characters, their ideas, all kinds of things. They even have developer names. There is nothing like that here. The only time this thread comes to life is when there's drama or some kind of stupid argument. Sometimes the thread dies and stays dead for days at a time. Are we going to disappear /evn/? It's like we built a house on a shaky foundation with nothing to hold it but toothpicks. It could topple at any moment. What meaning is there to this life?
>>
>>147396110

It's because we have very few active devs, who presumably spend more of their time developing rather than posting about it.
>>
>>147396180
Do they really exist though, or are they just in our heads?
>>
I'm not even a dev. I just come here to hear about games and see the few in development being posted.
>>
In renpy, how do you just show a transition without actually changing the images shown before or after?
>>
>>147396110
people used to post stuff but they got attacked for whatever reason, and i guess it perplexes others why someone doesn't want to post if they get a bunch of negative feedback.
>>
>>147396796
From my experience posting original works on 4chan... Many people seem to be jealous or seeking to attack people who post original works. Many just straight up get ignored. Rarely you might get some useful feedback, but most is negative. Not the constructive kind of negative. Some messed up, merry go round of how to make it better by doing what the poster wants you to do. Which is normally always a terrible idea. Negative feedback can be good, but destructive feedback or thoughts on how it could be better in high doses is just a recipe for disaster. Most people giving advice have no clue what they're talking about. Of course, most of this comes from my experiences with /ic/, but 4chan is mostly 4chan. It attracts a lot of the same kinds of people. I've seen art posted plenty of times with decent anatomy that gets torn apart. Even after providing redlines showing the entire anatomy and how it works you get people arguing about tiny insignificant things. If you've ever heard of mercwip you know what I'm saying. 4chan is quite the tragedy. It pulls people in, but never really gives them any kind of release. Just flips it's skirt and shows some leg on occasion.
>>
>>147397579
>it is skirt
Also just to prove I'm from /ic/ and can't actually write.
>>
>>147396796
The one time I posted my art here some artfag 'critiqued' it. I didn't fucking ask for it, but then they expect their critique to be holy grail and flipped their shit when I posted progress without applying their 'critique'.
>>
>>147397858
This is just in general but I don't understand when people get mad about critiques they "didn't ask for". If you're posting something, you're asking somebody to say something about it.
>>
>>147397858
Not sure if this is relevant, but if anyone wants advice on your art, go somewhere that people will actually be able to help you. You don't need a hugbox like DA, and you don't need a shitbox like 4chan. Find someone with a decent knowledge of art and befriend them. Ask their advice. Learn from people who aren't anonymous. Get your free ebooks, info and any random questions that have little bearing on anything from 4chan and find someplace that you can grow. Don't waste your time here. You'll regret it. Use 4chan only for airing out your dirty clothes when they start wreaking and you need to release a bit of that pent up frustration or shoot the shit with random idiots.

Devs would post more if we were far less offensive and there was a real benefit to doing so. We have very few devs who will post in here despite that, and anyone who might be interested in posting only has to see the reaction those devs get to decide against doing so. Not to mention all the other randomly posted images that get ripped apart.

We like to ignore everything nice about what's posted and instead just hammer home how garbage the GUI looks, or why the sprites look like they have the downs. Critiques are awesome, but they should reinforce the positives as well as explain the bad, and they should never feel like they're trying to personally attack someone's efforts.
>>
>>147402418
Honestly, /evn/ tends to be a lot nicer to people they know are from here. The only reason the random images get ripped apart is because they are outsiders.

They should never get pissy if their critiques are ignored however. Redoing work is another matter and may not always be feasible, so instead they should just hope that what they brought to light can benefit that artist in their future work.

Just don't advertise it to sjw types. And don't sell it or the loli police might find you.
>>
>>147402759
Dunno about that. Some of the HB and Lucid9 devs are here, but I've seen them get dumped on quite a bit, especially the former.
>>
>>147402759
Mugen and Tao are both hardcore /jp/ & /evn/ posters until recently and those two get picked on the most, so your analogy doesn't hold any water. If anyone here thinks there is a dev posting here from a particular group, that person will trash the dev just on principle.
>>
>>147403694
HB/Alienworks is an exception, mostly due to Raithfyre.

As for Lucid9, I don't recall seeing them get any hate. I mean they released a free game, what can you really say about that?
>>
>>147403693
I'm less concerned about the reception it gets and more concerned about being able to find or hire some reliable help that won't just disappear on me.
>>
>>147404083
Well if you mean hiring artists the loli and incest shouldn't be terribly hard to get, but the bestiality might be trickier, though that's less because of people being grossed out by it and more that it's harder to find artists who can draw proper animals.
>>
>>147403694
Highway Blossoms was because people were using its quality to gauge what HRP might be like. It also got amazing critical reception despite not being particularly amazing.
>>
>>147403950
Tao is literally an /evn/ meme, I'd say he actually has quite a bit of fans in this general more so than anyone else.

As for mugen, I'm surprised when you say he gets picked on, he gives a lot to the EVN community.
>>
>>147403987
I've seen people who praised it (reasonably, without saying it's better than everything else or the art is god tier or anything else over the top) get called shills quite often, probably because they knew the dev was here. Also, once the initial short lived, but mostly positive reception died down, it started getting trashed every time I saw it brought up.
>>
>>147404281
By evn standards it's pretty up there, though that has more to do with evns than highway blossoms itself.
>>
>>147404324
/jp/ used to troll him because one guy in his company smuggled onions but that's just bants. Mention Mugen on /evn/ and it's all hating on his games because of weed memes.
>>
>>147403448
>combination of all of them usually does the trick.
name one.
>>
>>147404367
Oh, I took a month or so break from here around that time I guess I missed it all. I do recall seeing anyone posting anything positive about it a shill though.
>>
>>147404367
That's likely due to the hype dying down and people starting to form their opinions on what flaws the VN had. I know people who really liked it, but hated the MC and the drama she created for herself.
>>
>>147404274
I've been doing everything myself thus far, but I feel like I've hit the point where I'll need a programmer as this is a bit more complicated than a straightforward VN. So many places have started cracking down on loli alone that I don't even know where to begin to look for someone who I know has experience and won't just up and disappear on me.
>>
>>147404324
Besides the running gag of people thinking every woman he draws is secretly a futa, I think most of the criticism is centered on his lack of project focus. He seems working on this now though. It just felt like he announced alot of games and the newer ones got finished before the older ones. I was baffled when he announced his space game, when he was still working on Toko and Dizzy Hearts. His games don't have separate staff, so that many projects is just going to bog down progress on all of them.
>>
>>147404459
It's not hard to imagine a combination with those fetishes and why that might make people feel uncomfortable.
>>
>>147405079
name one time tumblr went out with pitchforks for someone's stupid cartoon fetishes. making someone uncomfortable because you drew girls fucking dogs, well big whoop, there are lots of western artists doing that already. a high percentage of most well-known western hentai artists seem to have some degree of gross ass bestiality in their art galleries, you're not even special in your attempts to cater to pervs.

if you don't want someone making negative comments about what you made, then never show it to anyone, ever.

I didn't literally mean it causes people to run to the hills or take up arms, that was a joke, and I don't know where you got tumblr from, but the legality of lolicon and many site rules effectively bar me from even posting any of it to begin with. And if you don't think these kinds of fetishes can easily alienate or outright repulse people who don't go looking for them, then I don't know what to tell you.

The real problem is that I don't know where I might be able to turn to in order to recruit someone experienced and reliable while also taking into account that loli isn't allowed in most places. I'd like to make an appeal directly to people who I know have experience as I've had terrible luck trying to find them elsewhere.
>>

I rarely miss a thread and all I've seen said of Lucid9 was "amazing writing" and such, some guy said SoL was boring and the other that the art was too loli for him to take the story seriously, I don't remember any hate really
personally I liked it well enough apart from writing in couple of places where the characters behave like animu cliches (mind you, it's literally a couple of moments in the entire long VN) and that one BG in MCs room looking weird.

Okay. I can't post the exact code right now but I'll try to at least explain what I was trying to do.
Firstly, I'm using https://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=18047 group battle as a basis (though at this point it's mangled and barely recognizable, but the overall logic is the same).
What I want to do: player clicks a skill, it applies a debuff to enemy. This debuff sticks for 3 rounds. Ideally I would like to make enemies apply them to a party too (say a random chance every turn).
What I did to try and make it happen: first added a turn counter at the end of the battle loop, after each turn count increases by 1. Added a button that when clicked changes status (e.g. "poison = true") and checks what round it is. Then in the section that deals with party member's attack I added a "while" loop that checks if poison = true and whether stored round counter increased, and the loop terminates if it's increased by 3, setting "poison" back to false.
It's a fucking mess, yes, I don't expect anyone can save me. Sometimes it tracks the debuff correctly, sometimes it won't apply at all or stick forever.
>>
>>147424241
Ok, as the random effects you mention seem to be mostly not debuffing when needed, and since you use a bunch of whiles and fors, seems like the problem has to be some inconsistency with loop var increase (silly stuff like "i = " instead of "i =="), out of bounds due to incorrect stopping conditions (if counter == 3 instead of >= 3, maybe) or good ole classic array overflow. Those are the most common mistakes in these cases. Double check everything and try to run little parts of the code to isolate the buggy part.

Can't go into more detail without seeing the code... and on top of that, even if the underlaying logic is the same as C or Java, I don't even know Python syntax.

>>
>>147417632

If it was urgent you'd be doing it wrong. You literally need to keep a youtuber updated. Send a date for expected release. Send another date closer to your release. Send remind very close to release and then another with the release.

Totalbiscuit talked about what he considered a good way to let them know about a game, so I'd say apply that technique to most youtubers and you should be good. Obviously people with a tiny amount of subs aren't going to be as busy or as popular but still.

These are questions for those of you who are working on or have made an evn in the past.

Are you a writer? Would you say you had much experience with writing before you started writing your evn?

Are you an avid reader? Do you read many novels and such things?
>>
What's the fastest a project died on you? Mine was a week when I unknowingly joined a project in the dying phase.
>>
>>147440702
Oh, and also how well was your evn received if you have shown it to anyone or sold it?
>>
>>147440783
Many of my ideas have died if that counts. I think of an idea that Iike, and after starting to work on it realize it's not a good idea at all.
>>
>>147440702
Was always regarded as 'a writer' at school, have only one tiny professional writing credit to my name outside of EVNs though, sufficiently small that you couldn't look it up to verify it.

I read a LOT, but primarily genre fiction rather than 'literary'. (Despite the most common definitions, genre fiction is certainly capable of including characterisation and social commentary, but it gives it a shinier package.) It's harder for something to come to my attention if it's out in the wild fields of general literature.
>>
I wonder if my vn is going to suck because I haven't been a writer and I don't read many novels. Almost every good writer will tell you to read as much a possible. Read everything you can. I've barely read any books. Am I screwed?
>>
>>147442086
What do you draw from? VNs are very dialog-heavy, sometimes entirely dialog. If you're extremely familiar with the beats of movies/tv/stage, you might be fine with banter even if you don't read much.
>>
>>147442086
You could always remedy that instead of whining.

>>
>>147443192
Why are you in this job if you don't read or write?
>>
>>147444032
Dostoyevsky. Probably won't translate well to VN format, though.
>>
>>147444032
Forget visual novels for a second. All you need to focus on is reading something that appeals to you, let your sub-conscious do the work and learn to enjoy reading.
>>
>>147444032
Books generally don't translate directly to VNs at all, that's part of the problem. Reading a lot will familiarise you with tropes, cadences, vocabulary and phrasing, how information can be conveyed, what writers do to intentionally mislead readers and then bring it together for a payoff, maybe some hints of how they make a love interest appealing (or fail utterly at doing so). Basic fundamental tools that will help your crafting skills to adjust the details of your own VN. But NOT to translate straight into one.

The strengths of the visual novel format lie in the ways that they are not books.
>>
>>147444309
I was doing game design before. I made RPGs, platformers, and other little games. What I really love is creating characters and worlds. I wanted to show those things to the player, and eventually I realized that visual novels would be a great way to do that. With action games, there's such a focus on the gameplay, and most people just want to skip the story if there is any. I want to work in a medium where the player wants to play the thing for the story, characters, and the world.

>>147444320
>>147444446
Thanks.

>>147444713
That makes sense. I think people who are avid readers will be able to tell a much more engaging story, since they have experienced many of them before. Just like you say. I'm looking for the skills that translate into VN storytelling and characters. I was just curious how many of you are also avid readers. It seems like most of you probably are.

Which I'm cutting back on recently to work on my VN more seriously. For me, sitting down and taking the time to read, or be disconnected long enough to get engrossed in a book is extremely hard. Hi all guys.
Newfag here, may I ask you a question?
I read a good amount of Japanese Visual Novels, and I decided to start reading also EVNs.
Does even exist a recommendation chart about them? I saw a lot of charts about JVNs, but none about EVNs.

Or if you can give me some advices, I'll gladly accept them.
The only ones I ever played were:

- Katawa Shoujo (I appreciated it a lot)
- Unteralterbach (I found it boring)
- Long Live the Queen (Nice and funny, but not exactly my favourite kind of VN).

Judging by the video it looks almost exactly like Tyranobuilder. Since they created RPGMaker, they most likely have much more experience with such things. I'm looking forward to it. If it's anything higher than $15 I think they might be a bit mental, though. That would be a huge overestimation of the amount of people seeking another Tyranobuilder who will pay more than they would for TB, or even working on making visual novels in general.

lucid9 is only good if you have incredibly low standards

all the depth that the characters get is actually very shallow stuff with only two real meaningful characters, those being the protagonist and his waifu

the rest of the characters behave like bad tropes and the writing is incredibly awkward, forcing the HA HA SCHOOL LIFE EVERYONE LOVES EVERYONE aspect on you

the actual mystery aspect is definitely not terrible, but it's also ridiculously easy to predict it and where it's going to go after the climax, like they didn't even try to make anything a twist

it's all a lot of wasted potential really

We have a starter guide in the OP but for many reasons it only lists freeware games.

/evn/ as a community is very cagey about recommending things, partly because we hate ourselves, partly because we're all sure that everyone else around us is morons.

Also, while you absolutely don't come off as one of these guys, we get a lot of trolls who come in here, demand a recommendation, take whatever game is offered and declare it to be the worst piece of shit that was ever shat and proof that gaijin are racially inferior and go on a long rant about it. Renpy is piss easy for coding the vast majority of VNs. Unless you're doing something extremely complicated and genre revolutionizing it's simple as fuck, and if you were doing something like that you'd need renpy or a similar engine in order to actually program it. You should never limit yourself with an "easier engine", because they're also much more inflexible.

Can you explain how you made that? I'm guessing blender? If so, how long have you been using it?
>>
>>147469540
Blender, using the internal renderer. I've been using it for around 7 years. Though I didn't start doing pre-rendered BGs until the start of 2013.

IDK how to explain it really. I model stuff, then I render it. I usually turn on ambient occlusion and environment lighting, as well as add in extra lamps for finer control of the lighting. For a final BG I usually render masks so that I can control values between the grounds (foreground, midground etc). Other than that it's just a lot of modeling.

Oh, and I tend to use & combine a lot of reference images.
>>
>>147469975
Thanks! I learned a lot about blender for personal game design a while back, but not nearly 7 years worth. I was thinking about going back to it for my BGs, and I think I will since they can look really good if you know what you're doing. Which I don't, but I can probably figure it out. I don't really want to relearn the interface and all the shortcut keys, but I guess that's the tradeoff for having so many options. It looks really professional, nice job.
>>
>>147470351
Cool! I should add that I don't exactly have 7 years of experience — I took a lot of breaks from Blender during that time and I've mostly taught myself. If you somewhat regularly watch tutorials and keep practicing it probably won't take that long to catch up to where I am. Good luck & thanks :)

Largely agreed about protag and waifu, though I think the bro sidecharacter was also given some good development. I didn't hate the black-haired girl, but she could have tied into the plot a bit better.

I disagree on the mystery. The choices made to get through the climax scene went right aganst expectations, and what followed after was well-done. Particularly the protagonist's introspective monologue after events (which is the first scene I'd point to now for people who say music is extraneous in a VN, the score absolutely complements and lifts it, and the composer deserves praise).

I also doubt many people saw the final twist coming, and the lead-up to it was quite well written. The final CG also really hammered the point home.

There's a lot wrong with Lucid9, but it should be given credit where it's due. I think developers should read it, at the very least, just to study what did and didn't work.
>>
>>147472773
>I think developers should read it
i would but i don't have time for a 10hr evn. i don't even have time to read fata morgana and that thing looks like perfection in vn form.

>>

>The choices made to get through the climax scene went right aganst expectations

i guess we had different expectations because it's how i'd have wanted it to be done and it seemed too basic while having nice overall direction

For years (starting from like age 14), I trickled out fanfic at a rate of maybe one or two stories every year. Mostly whenever whim stuck me, because I had no work ethic.

Then I took a writing class (college elective, not required by my major) on creative writing, where we were required to read one short story (assigned reading) and write something every week, with two "big" stories as our assignments for midterm and final. Finally got me into the habit of writing and after that I started working on VNs.

>>
>>147527129

>>147527129
Well, I mean how many futas exist in the real world? It's a super rare mutation. Might as well start adding midgets to our games too or some mutations that don't have to deal with genitals. Since it isn't sex related, they're at least a bit more relevant. You don't have to explain them. Once they pop into the scene you know they're a midget without whipping their genitalia out.

>>147529489
They don't HAVE TO, but many of them have them in H manga and such media, because it's typical in porn to have a huge cock.
>>
>>147528948
There are many people born some flavor of in-between, but I've never heard of any of them coming out with a body type that looks like the typical hentai futa.

A far more common prospect is someone who's genetically XXY, has male bits in their pants, some female bits internally, gets weird hormone swings because of the female reproductive system, and might develop SLIGHT boobage. But only slight. They may look like somewhat girly men but they do not look like futa sexpots.

There are plenty of other intersex conditions but many of them are even more boring and further away from futa.
>>
>>147529716
There's whatever condition it is that causes some women to have a huge clit, which if you read it as a very tiny penis instead is sort of futa. I can't remember what causes that one though.

i don't think that's a huge factor. maybe the price is part of it, since it's hard to impulse buy a 20$ game, but 8-10$ is no problem.
>>
>>147544380
I don't know, both Solstice and Break Chance Memento were games that seemed really cool and ambitious early in development and had a lot of people excited about them, then took years and years to finally be released and by that point it seemed like nobody gave a shit anymore and nobody even talked about them when they came out.

EVNs are still launching at $15 and making sales, though I see fewer $20s these days than there used to be. There definitely is a push towards shorter, cheaper games and lower risks.

i don't think that being in dev forever was what hurt them though. both games just seem kind of muddled with concepts and i can't remember who was a romance route in BCM, and a post by an anon here was the only way i knew solstice has romance at all.

It is. The art is good, the writing is good (if awkwardly placed at times) and the plot is competent enough. But it has an approach of "everyone is bad and you can't fix it" that I find irritating in fantasy. I didn't feel satisfied when I was done, I felt like I wanted to strangle 3/4 of the cast.

It's like watching GoT. Not something I'd pay (again) for.

Does the thought that you can release a very polished game after a prior release that sold around 50,000 copies and barely sell any copies of it make anyone else nervous? Or do you just consider that a risk of making something for a fickle userbase?
>>
>>147557385

I'd be more nervous about the silence. It's not like the game had negative reviews, so what went wrong?
>>
>>147557751
>so what went wrong?
Wish I knew so I could not do it with my game.

eldet is at 21k now
>>
>>147557385
It didn't sell 50,000 copies.
Not that this matters since the same thing could happen anyway, having one successful game is no guarantee of having your next game sell.
>>
>>147558430
http://steamspy.com/search.php?s=cinders
>55,000 owners

If you have a better metric, go ahead and post it.

Also, of course it doesn't guarantee it. When your previous game has mostly positive reviews and tens of thousands of owners who know your brand and previous track record, they at the very least have a massive leg up on any of us here with no releases.
>>
>>147558258

>>
>>147559068
Coming Out on Top and the gym manager game did pretty well.
>>
>>147559068
I haven't read their kickstarter pitch but if they cover their costs well enough with that, they don't need to make a lot of sales on top afterwards.

I don't think the gay evn market is that big really, but a well-managed kickstarter lets you dodge the investment risk.
>>
>>147558845
What are you even implying other than that you want to look like a douche?

Yes I've heard of humble bundle my child. What exactly is the point that you're trying to make? Streamspy tracks Steam user profile metrics, not humble bundle. Are you implying that the game has more owners than what I listed? Great, you're furthering my point. Or are you just a mental case trying to vent today's anger on someone?
>>
>>147558258
>One of the primary philosophies of Eldet is that diversity matters.
I'm sick of this shit.
>>
>>147559324
SteamSpy tracks Steam users for the game, not just copies purchased on Steam. Cinders was part of a Humble Bundle, which means that thousands - most likely tens of thousands - of Steam keys were distributed that way. That doesn't count as a sale for the game, and most of those people likely never played it. They just own the game, and SteamSpy tracks that.
>>
>>147559324
As has been pointed out in pretty much every single /evn/ thread when someone looks at a SteamSpy owner count and goes "Oh wow, look at all the money they made!", steamspy tracks owners, NOT purchasers, certainly not direct purchasers. It includes all free keys, all keys bought elsewhere, and all bundle keys.

A hefty chunk of Cinders' owners count comes from people who bought a humble bundle it was featured on. Now, sure, technically you can say they bought the game because they did pay money and a game copy was received, but they didn't buy it individually. It was the only VN in that bundle, too, so not surprising if the majority of those owners never even installed it.

(Cinders was in at least one other bundle as well that was more narrative, so I'd expect more of them at least looked at it.)

None of us being privy to the behind-the-scenes figures, we can't get a good estimate of Cinders' direct sales nor of the number of owners who actually played the game. The other SteamSpy metric guesses that over 20,000 people have played it, which is pretty good.
>>
>>147559465
So you'd like to see more diversity in games in order to get more games that don't talk about diversity?
>>
>>147559626
>>147559976

So we can assume the game had little to no interest and would have sold like shit anyway without the bundles? That Solstice sold like shit because it reflects Cinder's true worth without the bundle? That's more in line with my expectations.
>>
>>147560217
No, I'm pretty sure Cinders legitimately sold a lot better than Solstice did, just not to the 50,000 level. I think it had more mainstream appeal. It had an easy pitch ("feminist fairy tale", whether you agree with it or not, is an easy soundbyte to repeat) and a defined target audience who knew what they were getting. You tell them it's a cinderella story, you show them a picture of cinders and a prince and her fairy godmother, they know if they're interested.

With dating games it's often easy to not have to worry about a good pitch because all you have to do is show some really hot character portraits and people will be all in there, "I want to bang the egyptian one with big tits!"

It's harder for something more story-based. Especially when your artistic integrity wants to keep all the story twists secret.
>>
>>147560114
Diversity for the sake of diversity is incredibly off-putting. I don't like this gimmicky marketing which congratulates itself for taking some kind of moral high-ground. I can't tell if it's the case for this game, but anything selling itself on "diversity and inclusiveness" will do so even when it doesn't make a lot of sense, and it's pretty clear that character X is just here to fill your gay Indian quota. Often they'll drag down the story to preach about the importance of including everyone. Diversity is fine, but forced diversity isn't.
>>
>>147560894
I REALLY want the dev to be a white guy so I can laugh about it.
>>
Infellune's yuri kickstarter has just over 2 days left to go. Given her reputation on lemma I'm going to sit this kickstarter out, but I hope the project turns out well.
>>
>>147560894
I don't really like it when het harem games shove in a random 'really legal i swear' flat-chested character and an obsessively-devoted little sister just to tick off their fetish list either, but I don't think every single game has to be designed the way I'd prefer it to be.

If their target market is tumblrfags then they may as well throw in the buzzwords, I guess.
>>
>>147561827

In renpy, how do you change the color of the text the player writes in the text input box? It seems to be yellow by default.
>>
>>147566884
Yes. How would you like it being black and buying a game with relationship options, but no one to represent your race. Not even a side character. You wouldn't want to be involved with that game, because you couldn't relate to it. That's the reality we live in these days.

Honestly, it's more like:
- many people are sick of having put up with a long string of not having any options
- now that games do exist with those options, many of them won't play anything else

Nobody has to play every videogame. If you don't want to play the all-gay game because you can't relate to a chubby cock-chaser, that doesn't make you a bad person.

And on the flip side, not every game has to be for everybody. It drives me fucking nuts when social justice types celebrate games having "progressive" characters or plots and refuse to change anything because that's who their games are for, then turn around and ask other people to change their games for them.
>>
>>147568146
IMO it's okay to ask, but not okay to throw a huge hissy fit about it if they say no.

Which is basically true for almost any suggestion, really. Sometimes players have great ideas that developers haven't thought of, and when it's raised the devs will go 'why didn't I think of that?' and include it. Sometimes players are idiots and their ideas are wrong.

I'm still angry about a "concerned" player contacting me to have an "honest discussion" about a subject which ended with, I thought, both of us coming to a useful understanding, until I saw her bitching about me on other blogs that I was a terrible person because I was unwilling to completely rewrite a story that she didn't like.

Clearly I couldn't win with that particular person so it's a waste of time being angry about it, but it still burns my buns.

>>
>>147569284
What was the subject?
>>
>>147569178
$150K profit, which is neither 150K sales nor $150K in gross sales (clarifying for anyone who doesn't want to read the whole thread)

A few posts further on he says that Cinders actually sold more like 8K units in real, individual sales.
>>
>>147569671
The lesbian couple getting a bittersweet ending rather than a super-happy one, basically. I'd rather not be more specific.
>>
>>147569587
Bundles don't make the big bucks, anon. They're pretty pitiful in terms of income, most of the time. Sure, you'll make a couple hundred or a couple thousand bucks, and if your game is selling a flat zero that's very tempting, but the benefit of bundles is largely to try and get your game in front of a bunch of eyeballs, not to get rich.

BGs like this make me wonder why I'm pouring so much time and effort into hand drawing mine just so they will look shittier.
