The only reason I found it awkward in the anime was because it was developed out of nowhere/"offscreen" and part of that is also due to the way they setup TP in the first place. Hell, they didn't but imply that she was previously hospitalized a lot, but in a way that she said she just didn't show up at school a lot (a truant or busy or poor girl?). Rin doesn't even see the side of her that makes Rin join in the overprotectiveness. A lot of her changes occur from producer's encouragement as she used to be a weak-willed, rather whiny girl with low self-worth. The anime isn't "at fault" for "leading you to believe" anything. You should be looking into idols you like or are curious about and finding out more about them. If someone doesn't care at all about Karen then her anime appearance is perfectly fine and does the job it needs to well.

I think a lot of westerners forget how accessible the mobage is for nips and how little effort it would take them to actually find out more about her straight from the source.

This is all from a Karenfag by the way. I dislike her anime appearance overall but I can accept it since it's not meant to be completely perfect since she's not a super main character.

"Perfectly fine" was a bit much since I do agree there's reasonable criticism to be made but bitching to bitch isn't really constructive.

Could her appearance have been better? Obviously.
Could she have been better fleshed out for animefags to understand her character better? Obviously.
Does it matter? No, her characterization in the anime does nothing to diminish her character. It would be entirely different if she was some super obscure character that built her character on glasses and then suddenly didn't wear them in the anime. That'd make the outcry worthwhile.

Again, it's hard for westerners to understand how nips can deal with it since the game and anime are /made/ for them and built in a way they can consume easily. It's not for westerners so sometimes they (this time, you) don't completely understand why something isn't how they want it to be despite it not /needing/ to be like that. The anime overall pushed a story, having Karen's full backstory laid out would have been out of place. If it was a choice between adding her with a slight offputting characterization or not having her at all, I'm so glad she's in it and is fairly close to her real self.
