Why don't speedrunners use custom sprites etc. for their runs? Should it even be allowed

Personally I hate watching L4D2 runs with stupid sanic decal laser guns and electric guitars but a zelda run with a different coloured link would probably be pretty cool.

The general principle of speedrunning is to take a game, give it your all until you burn out and come up with the best run you're capable of. A lot of runners don't even necessarily like the game ─ they consider running it a project that's on a time schedule. Focusing on dumb shit like custom sprites instead of optimizing your run is a waste of time.
