I think they will have settlements around forests, as well as the Beastmen. Then they and Beastmen will have an underway style of travel, but through the forests and with forest themed battles.

Forest battles could make it harder to use flyers and reinforcements, and maybe make more units vanguard

ok here are a few, just ideas
Number 1.
Horde army. Can only use the settle function in wooded areas. Cannot capture settlements of any other factions. Optionally add a new type of woodlands settlement type that only wood elves and beastmen can capture.

Number 2.
They have settelements in Athel Loren. These are in provinces owned by different wood elf factions. The Athel Loren portion of the map gets extended and made larger than it is in the current build. Can not capture settlements other than those in Athel Loren. There has to be something that drives the wood elves to do things other than just sit in their forest though, maybe the trees get VENGEFUL AS FUCK and decide "yknow what fuck karak norn fucking manlet fucks" and march on them OR ELSE

There will be a mini campaign the likes of Hannibal or the emperor augustus campaign I think, which would be this giant map of athel loren along with beastmen in there and some bretonnians also

I had more ideas when i started writing but i forgot them as i was writing which is sad because I know that at least one of them was a good idea

Don't the forest sprites in Athel Loren want to expand their forest anyway?
Managing forest growth could be a pretty cool mechanic, if you expand then you'll get advantages on both campaign and battle map but suffer penalties in diplomacy and make Beastmen attacks more frequent, while restricting growth will give you a more balanced influence.
You've then got a bit more options when functioning as a truly neutral faction.

This patch is all well and good, its given me the motivation to start a VC campaign.

However the game still desperately needs factions, especially in the south where orcs steam roll 95% of the time.

Anyone tried a mod that removes confederation? It just seems that the game always pans out the exact same.

Is it just me, or does Attila's combat feel different from the other games? It feels a lot less like a rout is set in stone because there's so many variables to morale that units can rout with a good amount of units left, only to come back a few seconds later and almost have full morale again.

Did you get the tech upgrades? I haven't played since the patch but on my legendary VC campaign I just rolled over everything I didn't feel like actually fighting with mass zombies since [enemy stacks +1] zombies can win nearly every autoresolve.

the orcs are strong and all but they arent particularly skilled combatants. Black orcs are a bit of an exception but but not by an amazing margin
They are stronger and more skilled sure but their main strenght is in being able to function om the battlefield without resorting to infighting like other greenskins

in tabletop terms the others are more skilled fighters
(an ironbreaker has a weapon skill of 5, the chaos warrior also has a WS of 5 while the black orc has 4. Normal orcs have 3 and goblins 2 which is pathetic)

The way that wood elves and beastmen can be implemented is interesting, there's quite a lot of ways to potentially do it

Beastmen probably make the most sense as a horde faction given their lack of major settlements, but it would be a hard campaign given that they would likely start somewhere in the Empire and it's fairly crowded at the moment. They could have some kind of forest retreat settlements to give them a safe haven but they shouldn't have nearly as many as a more civilised faction. I can't see them lasting too long in the campaign unless they also get events which make them pop up again constantly.

Wood elves can be done a number of ways, if they were also a horde with forests being areas where they get increased replenishment it could make sense, but justifying multiple stacks of elves roaming and raiding about the place might be a bit tricky. Sharing some forest settlements with beastmen could also be fine, although there isn't that much room for them on the campaign map at the moment. The other idea is to have Athel Loren as some kind of super settlement, which is also the only settlement that the wood elves have and is extremely tricky to take with high attrition for enemy armies, and has 12 building slots. The forest corruption idea is interesting but having three types of corruption in the game might be a bit much and make wood elves play too much like VC's on the campaign map, unless it works differently from other corruption mechanics, something like not actually taking over settlements, just taking a region's income by foresting it and adding it to Athel loren.

I'm not sure what Wood Elves would have to do for victory conditions, aside from killing beastmen, that would make sense. Maybe some kind of diplomatic victory where you ensure that all regions surrounding Athel Loren are either owned by allies or have no occupants? Having the same "stop archaon" objective as other factions could fit.

Ya the Beastie Boys makes sense. In lore they use the forests all the time as a chill spot, also uses the Beast-trails thing from the lore which perhaps may allow passing terrain that others cannot or with great difficulty. Beastmen never had settlements they have to be horde.

Tell us what´s a problem for you and you´ll get some advice. Overall it boils down to watch out where your troops are. Keep archers close to enemy infantry but far away from enemy cavalry. Keep spear infantry close to enemy cavalry and spear infantry close to enemy infantry. Keep cavalry out of pointy ends and close to enemy troops backside.

Or put more simply: maneuver around and try to get local numeric advantage even if the battle is evenly matched. Also attack flanks and rear rather than front, and keep an eye on terrain. Hills bother troops that shoot things and slow down cavalry. Stay behind if you´ve got no ranged, stay on top if you´ve got a lot of ranged and the enemy´s got cavalry.

With just that you´re already better than many players.

Chaos feels properly strong now, I took Averland from the BP and parts of Wisenland from, well, Wisenland. And then just turtled while Chaos ripped Empire apart, settled some ruins all the way to hoveldorf and then bam turn 100 and WoC are automatically at war with me too, thankfully I could raze a terrorgeist and some decent meatshields in Hoveldorf and fought several of their stacks long enough for Mannfred to recruit a proper force

Imagine you're standing in an alley way. It's the dead of night, and nothing but a few oil lamps dangling from the walls illuminate the streets. You can hear some rustling, but such is common after all, masterless mutts and furtive felines tend to the alleyways in the dark of night. But the rustling just seem to become louder by the second.
"Is anyone there?" You might call out, and a shape emerges, as if alerted by your notice. A hobbled, featureless character, letting out barely audible sniveling noises. It says nothing, it simply stands there - smelling you. The shape takes a step forward, with a wooden thunk echoing between the walls of the alley. It appears to be carrying a staff, and once the staff is placed at an angle so that you may see the silhouette - your breath halts, and blood frozen. The standard of the staff is a triangle, a shoddily made one at that. But the change in your breath is enough for the hobbled creature as it cranks it's neck backwards to let out a shrieking monotone chittering. At this point, it felt like your legs were losing their balance, but no.. It is something else. Muffled sounds of chittering is returned, you want to move - but your legs are not following your will. A thump of the side of your fist into the thigh does not help either. The chittering grows louder, and you can tell, it is not only the two of you in the alley anymore. There are things crawling out of the crevices in the buildings, out of the manholes and coming from the streets. You cannot hear anything beyond the loud chittering from a thousand rats. The staff is lifted up, and pointed straight at you, and the feeling of a thousand, or more eyes shifting straight to you followed by a weight and darkness - followed by gnawing with their rotten, yellowed teeth.

I'm not a good writer, but that's what the horde is like. They don't fight.

My Spearmen with shields had 64 Melee Defence. That gives the average Marauder a 10% chance to hit them. They weren't even experience capped.

The average Skaven may be a malnourished midget, but they come in massive hordes. Usually the Skaven will have a solid number advantage.

Also keep in mind that the Skaven Military elite are much more robust than the average clan rat or slave on account of having a proper diet. Stormvermin are about as robust as men, and are heavily armored.

Then there's all the mad science bullshit. Like warp shot muskets and gattling guns. Poison gas. DOOM WHEELS. Rat Ogres. And even lightening cannons. All this stuff may be super unreliable, but it's dead killy.

So yeah. Skaven are a serious head on military threat to the Empire and Dwarves. When they're not killing eachother.

I mostly like it. Lances/handguns taking off arms and heads makes the weapons feel nicely hefty, and artillery/monsters completely pulping guys is bloody fun.

I'm not quite fond of how quickly units get completely drenched in blood after only taking even a few points of damage from an arrow or light hand weapon. Especially if said troops are heavily armored.

Necromancers can make your expensive-ass buildings cheaper. Banshees, vampires, and Crypt Lords are good in combat with vamps being the most fragile but offering a big unit restore bonus.

Regular skellymans are pretty shit, Crypt guards are boss though. Spoopy ghosts are pretty decent now post patch, and all of the batty-bats are good shit in their own way.

Really the only unit I can't find a good place for is ghouls.

All of the agents are useful in their own ways, banshees are probably the most useful since they assassinate shit in the campaign map and are murder machines in battle, but all of them except maybe necromancers are useful in both areas.
Vampire lords are better than necromancer lords
You can build armies in a number of ways. One way is to get multiple cheap stacks of skeletons and zombies to throw at the enemy. It doesn't matter if they die, and the more casualites in a battle the better your raise dead pool will be, letting you get high tier units instantly. A mix of monsters and grave guard/black knights also work fine, the wraiths are good against high armour targets.

Ignoring the issues magic has already, necromancers are pretty fucking useless since they're not melee fighters and winds of magic can easily be all used very quickly by just one caster, so the notion of bringing necromancers for reanimation support doesn't make any sense. Empire cavalry is better because demigryphs rape every other unit in the game.
Their archers and infantry are cost efficient, the idea was that they could bring way more cavalry than anyone else, but that idea doesn't really work in total war when there's no point limit on troop types.

In the tabletop Bret cav, on top of having good stats, have special rules regarding their formation. They have this "Lance" formation which allow them to rape everything.

They basically charge in formation of 3 columns, which exposes only the front row of 3 models but allow them to attack with the whole column on each side.

Wood elves are shooty and incredibly fast, but die if anything even looks at them funny. They're the high-dex build of Warhammer factions.

Beastmen I'm not sure. Lots of fast, cheap, melee soldiers and an ambushing mechanic. They're probably the worst army on TT due to power-creep and they never got an update to make them relevant again.

With how much more damage a thunderer can pull out, I'd say it'd probably better to replace 2 of the quarellers, regardless of "dps uptime". Thunderers always seem to do the real killing, and start the chain routes when you get them on the sides. Quarellers tend to be underwhelming in that regard.

just use checkerboard formation and attack the enemy right as their are about to move through the gap, the tards will stand with their flank to your guns and die instantly, your melee infantry will take quite a bit of casualties since its getting attacked from two sides if its not armoured heavily enough, but even then its still worth it

Gelt get's a pegasus, but that doesn't fix his garbage magic. His campaign bonuses are sort of resigned to "well if you're going to use mages, might as well not even be me".

Kemmler is a shitty version of the necromancer, but at least he's not a metal mage. His campaign bonus of 15% off raise dead costs is crazy good as well.

With a bit of luck, he can raise 500 points of undead a turn, making back his own cost in two turns, while also being a decent combat monster.

Warhammer battles can last a fair few turns, so this could get kind of absurd.

You know that lord of change - the Giant raven daemon that accompanies Archaon?
His race is the best natural spellcasters, they can cast two to three spells per turn, nagash can cast eight. With a modifier of up to +5, meaning most of his spells are incapable of failing.

He can easily summon 80 infantry, a dozen monstrous infantry, and two monsters/heroes every turn, with an average game lasting six turns.

Exactly, necromancers are just there for if you never want to spec into magic on your vampire lords but magic isn't that useful aside from a few borked spells anyway.
If they had separate pools for magic, you could make higher level wizards actually better at casting spells by making their spells more cost efficient/do more damage or whatever, and letting them have a winds of magic recharge rate that doesn't go to shit after a few spells would make them continuously useful throughout a whole battle. Wizards should be a serious and useful asset on a battlefield, not just there to drop some short lived buffs and no practically no damage. Not that CA is going to do anything like this, anyway.

Im not sure it is a bug but they are unbreakable, i tried them against greatswords and their morale never broke even at 3 men which caused them to then beat the greatswords.

Same for Chosen with halberds vs Demigryphs, the chosen won because they could not be broken.

Is this a bug it does not state they are immune to psychology or unbreakable.

Honestly I've never felt the effect in battles. It's nice to see the green-regen effect around your troops as you maneuver your necromancer around, but if you sat your necro on a group of half-dead(again) zombies, it would probably take a long while to start seeing them stand up again.

It's not an issue because every buildings gives -% upkeep. Try transfering an entire army of chosen to an horde that doesn't have the building chain for it and you'll hit bankruptcy really quickly.
