Do you have a question about a Japanese visual novel or a translation of it?

How do you write dialogue for characters without sounding like it's always just the writer pretending to be the characters? Is there a guide or some tips and tricks somewhere? I'm really worried that people will think all my character dialogue is too samey. Am I worrying too much?
>>
>>146856280
My issue is that the proportions seem off with the girl on the left. Her jacket might be causing part of the effect though.

The most common complaint I've seen is the colors used and how overly shiny their space suits are.

I have noticed that this game has gotten a ton more complaints about the art than Tao's other games. Both Greenlight and /u/ weren't exactly jumping to play it.

>>
here's a question I'm sure has never been asked before:

why does tao keep making more projects instead of finishing the one that everyone kickstarted and gave them the funds to start their studio in the first place?????
>>
>>146857392
I wish Toko was about them when they were younger, those sprites are pretty cute.
>>
>>146849538
aren't these royalty free sprites?
>>
>>146857984
They're working on it right now actually. Stargazers and Toko Chapter 1 are going to be released before it though since they're much shorter. Chapter 1 of Toko is supposed to come out this fall.
>>
>>146858030
not even royalty free, i think they're just free. it's some lsf kid's project, what do you expect?
>>
>>146857904
I'm really just curious. A lot of work and effort was obviously put into those characters. Surely something like that would pull in a fair amount of funding.
>>
>>146858118
given the length of their games though, it's a bit worrying it takes them this long to get to where they are. Seems like there's some serious problems with managing things somewhere along the line
>>
>>146858181
or they're just plain lazy
>>
>>146858225
that too. Focus is all over the place, diverting resources to making a voice/HD art patch chapter 0 of Toko which realistically isn't going to help the game much in terms of sales
>>
>>146857985
I don't want another Strawberry Vinegar.
>>
>>146858376
They also promised a Toko artbook last year and a patch to fix and add content to The Menagerie. The Menagerie patch feels necessary since that game felt very incomplete.
>>
>>146858417
u no like loli?
>>
>>146858179
Effort doesn't correlate with funds. Cheap cash-in games like the tank dating sim sold very well, while Rising Angels Hope, which had alot of effort and assets put into it sold like shit.
>>
>>146858417
Strawberry Vinegar didn't have appealing art though. Tao can draw some pretty cute girls when he isn't drawing demons and insanely heavy girls.
>>
>>146859672
Demon girls can be cute. And his bbw characters aren't "insanely heavy". In fact, SJWs were complaining that he didn't make Nadia fat enough.
>>
>>146859672
This isn't appealing?
>>
>>146859905
Well, just look at those tiny mutant fingers.
>>
>>146859905

>>
>>146859905
I've never played, so I've never seen any of the CGs. They are much better than the sprites, which I personally really dislike.
>>
>>146858376
>realistically isn't going to help the game much
Realistically it's going to keep people away from it. If I saw that VA trailer I'd instantly skip the game. Not joking, it's horrendous.
>>
>>146859627
What's the problem whith Rising Angels? Simply not enough tits?
>>
>>146859627
I can't explain the tank dating sim. I think most people just bought it for laughs and memes. Everyone knew it was a cheap game. I would think as long as you market yourself properly you should do fine if you have plenty of eye candy. Toko has lots of eye candy, so I'm sure people are eating that up.
>>
>>146860872
Yuri fans think the dev is Hitler because he made a yuri game they didn't like once years ago.
>>
>>146860872
Dev lacks a large loyal following but does have a hatedom, and the last-minute splitting into 'episodes' confused and put off people
>>
>>146860648
The voices are optional DLC that costs $5.

The 1440p is free, but most people that run VNs do it on toasters, so that's going to be alot of wasted effort. 1080p would've been the max that could've been pushed for realistically.
>>
>>146860872
Germanic man with a mustache who wants to take over the EVN world and purge it of the waifu? Yep, he's actually Hitler.
>>
>>146861324
>The voices are optional DLC that costs $5.
I'm just saying, if the first contact I had with it was that trailer, I would have NOPEd the fuck out.
>>
>>146861770
People whine that they want voice acting.
Dev can't afford professional VAs, so they hire amateurs.
People whine that the voice acting is shit and that they mute most if not all of it.
>>
>>146861989
To ever take people wanting VAs into consideration is a horrible, horrible mistake.
>>
>>146861989
I haven't seen the trailer for their VA patch so can't comment on the quality, but I feel like even amateur voice acting can work if you're careful with who you choose and make sure the voices fit well.

Because I didn't spend all that much on VA for my VN and feel like it's been well received. Or, at the very least, no one has said anything bad about it
>>
>>146862620
They also tend to want the extra content for free. How many people will want to pay $5 for voices when the game it's for is also $5? The people asking for these kinds of additions have no idea what they cost and just list off things that sound cool to have.

The lesson here is don't listen to whining if it's not practical. You know your business much better than they do.

Players demand a change that's easy to do? Do it!

Players demand something ridiculous? IGNORE THEM.

"But your game would be so much better if you could choose the protagonist's gender and also design the way they look and also have 20 endings and also..." Don't argue with them, just ignore it.

>>146862979
Toko's VA dropped out due to real life issues, so she's being recast.

Devon's VA is great and like Ginxhou's voice. The 3 that I find off are Aces High (too nasally), the angel (bad anime dub tier), and Toko's dad (sounds too young/voice doesn't match character).
>>
>>146863231

Devon and the Angel lady are the same VA actually.
>>
>>146864829
I think Tao said that they went with bad dub with the angel on purpose for that classic anime feel.

To be honest, while I think the idea is a bit... insensitive? I don't think they should get in legal trouble over it... I mean, I don't think it's any different to all those Twilight or Harry Potter parody novels, that you can buy in stores. And they didn't rip any assets from the game itself, so I don't really see the problem.
>>
>>146886064
I find the idea tacky, but if they change the name or splat 'A PARODY' in the title I think they're okay legally. Right now, though, it is designed too much to look like it's a legitimate sequel.
>>
>>146886649
Yeah, I think it's tacky and tasteless, but so long as they make it clear it's a parody I think it should be fine.

It's probably quite a good idea, since they're piggybacking off a relatively well known VN, the idea is offensive enough to gather interest and make people lol, the art is nice, and they'll be H scenes, apparently. There's no way this isn't going to do well.

Some projects were on there for months before finally getting through.

Infellune's yuri kickstarter is close to $5,500 stretch goal for after stories and love scenes. At $8,000 the game will end up getting partial voice acting.

Very low. I know people that think her premises sounded promising, only to lose hope that it will ever actually come out once they find out that her name is attached to the project.

She's doing the writing and coding for the project. If she gets burnt out, then the game either won't getting finished, or the writing and programming could be very subpar.

>Infellune(Elle)- Creator, Head of team, Writer, and Coder.

Also, she's shilling diversity to get funding.

>Lunar Wing Games is a small indie dev group that I made last year. My goal for Lunar Wing Games is to create fun, positive body type and LGBT games that everyone can enjoy. As you can see Abby is a bit chubby. I did this because I'd like to have some more different body types to help support people. I also would like to make more LGBT games from Yuri, Yaoi and even otome games that feature LGBT characters. I know I'm not the only one who does and wants to do this, but I want to help add to the genre with my own games.

>Reach for the Stars is one of the first game I created under this title. My hope for it is that players can have an interesting story and characters that they can relate too.

Partial voice acting at 8k, but for the intended size of game, that's only a drop in the bucket and would probably be better off spent on something else.

>shilling diversity to get funding
To be fair you kind of have to shill SOMETHING to get funding, whether it be "old school RPGs" or "crunchy boardgame action" or "diversity" or "wall to wall tits", you've got to be offering something you think people want
>>
>>146955460
The game's probably gonna be a tough sell once it comes out. The MC is stated to be chubby, which most consumers don't want. And it focuses on a suicidal protagonist and bullying, which could be handled by a good writer, but I doubt someone from lemma could pull it off. If it's gonna be an angst fest that would really put /u/ and other yuri fans off.

That's not exactly a glowing recommendation. But then again, I've started to realize that many people love drama. I mean really over the top drama. The only time most will complain about drama is when it makes no logical sense, like that one route with the rapist teacher from NOBY.

You must have never worked with Paypal, you can file a claim and get your money back even without a contract.

It's a good thing you're only doing this as a hobby because based on your short few posts you'd be completely fucked running an actual business. You'd be completely fucked the moment you commissioned anyone.

But seriously don't ever try to do business, you're not cut out for it.
>>
>>146975486
They do part of the work, you pay them for that, so you're square. Unfortunately they aren't available to do future work that they've agreed to due to reasons, so there's no money for you to get back. They did work, so they got paid for what they did of it.

People want VAs for just about every VN that's released. The problem is that people don't want to pay extra for such a feature. It turns a $5 game into a $10 game. >Also, I find that vns aren't particularly great for long form prose, it's more about individual lines. That being said that's just my style, I;m sure people think differently.

I agree. Since it's a VISUAL novel. There's no need to have really flowery prose that is bursting out of the text box. Keeping things flowing at a good pace with short and concise lines is what I prefer.

One of the benefits to having multiple relationship routes in a game is that writers are not always correct about which characters will end up having the best chemistry

Of course sometimes you still have to wait for a fandisc or sequel to get some awesome side character as a route

You could probably do it quite easily with outside animation and some custom transitions in renpy. I'd advise posting on the lemn forums and asking for examples of what you might be able to use to achieve similar - from there it's probably only tweaking.

I don't see anything in that which would be particularly hard to do in renpy, other than the fact that a lot of renpy users can't code and don't understand how anything works.

Guys, Ihave a dilemma. Is there any way to make novelesque style work in ADV format? Or should I switch to NVL? I mean like:
"Anon, your VN will most likely be crap!", he said with utter disgust.

I have a few of those. I could get rid of them, but at the same time I kind of want to keep them around. Saya no Uta pulled off style well enough...
>>
>>147002517
You can always switch back and forth between ADV and NVL styles. Many games use the big NVL display for long narrative passages and then drop back into a smaller dialog box when people are talking.
>>
>>147002517
I don't think it'll be a problem, but it's a bit difficult to tell from a single line.
>>
>>147003256
In standard literature is perfectly fine. It's just that it feels a bit redundant here since, well, you have both the namebox and the sprite to convey that stuff in most cases. On the other hand, sprite expressions are finite and sometimes you want to tell something more subtle.

Maybe I simply obsess too much over minor stuff.

>>147003041
Yeah, short NVL sections were a given for me. It's the dialogue part what makes me worry.

I don't think the money affects the special interests that much, the biggest problem is that if you're dealing with money you're going to have to use your real name on a lot of paperwork to transfer funds and that makes it harder to keep your identity completely under wraps.

If you are making a funny porn game, odds are no one will give a shit or even know you exist. How often have you seen tumblr outraged about the existence of Royal Guard Melissa?

NEVER.

There is no tumblr hit squad stalking /evn/ waiting for you to release a shitty niche porn game so that they can begin a crusade about it. They only react to things that are rubbed into their faces.

If you actively want to piss off some SJWs and make them campaign against your tentacle rape product, you need to market it as something wholesome and family-friendly, enough to get mainstream media attention, while responding to any suggestions that you're implying tentacle rape with wink-wink-nudge-nudge. This will get their panties in a twist.

Could someone else me find a way to see a list of all non-Japanese Visual novels through vndb please? https://vndb.org/ Sorry for being autistic but I can't seem to find a way to.

I'd like to have a global view on what's been made and how popular it got, a friend of mine is working on a VN so I want to have an idea of how a Western VN dev could make it into the medium. I know about big titles like Katawa Shoujo or Juniper's Knot but that's it. Links like this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Western_visual_novels aren't exactly useful because incomplete.

Depends on what you define as "decent quality", do you have an example of what is you define "minimum acceptable level"?
>>
>>147146405
Nope, not a single one in English. Everything I heard sounds either forced, amateurish, too high pitched trying--and failing big time-- to sound cute, or plainly bad monotone. That's why I think pulling it off to be a very difficult task. Mostly because what other anons said before: if you want ero in the west, only porn related VAs are game. And while those might do for the H parts, they usually are pretty bad at regular voice acting, like bad anime dub tier.
If you can prove me wrong, please do. I'd love to have English VAs. But as things are now, I'd rather skip the voices or go full weeb.
>>
>>147147341
I'm secretly old but trying to sound like a cute young animu girl voice is the bane of English VA existence.
>>
>>147147341
Well, for example, do you think professional level english VAs are good? I'm curious as to what you consider a good VA in english, at all.
Like, do the VAs in the simpsons sound good enough to you?

Most problems with non-professionals come down to 2 things:

Emoting, they sound like a middle school play. They also try to force a voice that's not their own, when they aren't nearly at that level yet. They're not good actors, or impressionists. They think they're Hank Azaria.

Equipment: This is much bigger one, people think their blue yeti is acceptable, with no popfilter, in an echo-y room.

Are there any hurdles to making a trap protagonist game? I heard there was some issue with the Royal Trap's title.
>>
>>147155680
Only briefly, and years after release. Nothing that actually caused serious problems. However, that game really ISN'T a "trap game" at all.

In terms of making a crossdressing protagonist game, some people are offended by the term trap because of what it implies, and if you actually make a game about a crossdressing boy trying to lure men into bed under false pretenses someone will totally be offended if they ever find out about it. But just crossdressing is not a big problem.
>>
>>147156213
>Only briefly
Because the dev caved and added onto the title.

Devs really need to evaluate the essentialness and cost/time costs for fan suggestions.

I agree that it resolved the issue quickly, however it's essentialness is still questionable. People thinking you'll cave to any criticism they have isn't a good thing either, since that can add up over time. I'd say it's more a case of picking your battles. In this case the dev had numerous people misunderstanding the title, so they were likely planning such a change anyway.

>I have no idea how SEO works!

They didn't really change the title, just added Confines of the Crown after it.
>>
>>147160184

>Why don't the other evn devs get the advertising that Highway Blossoms got?
Because it's unlike those other EVN :^)
>>
>>147163553
The thing with how they dealt with Sunrider really bothers me. They'll more than happily promote and leech off of existing success, but when something isn't super popular they sweep it under the rug and still take just as big of a chunk of the profits.
>>
>>147163814
Yes, because the dev is in charge of Sekai's evn division. If he's handling the marketing budget for evns, then other devs are screwed, since he'll always favor his own projects.

I remember that Toko had good marketing at launch and you know how they did it? They hired their own PR guy with experience in the business. He probably did a way better job than Sekai and costed much less.
>>
>>147163480
you felt in control as a whiny useless brat? no wonder you hang out on 4chan
>>
>>147164634
While reviews for the game are mixed, the positive ones definitely outweigh the negative ones.
>>
>>147164828
Don't forget that they also got people to contribute to the game because it was a Free Project For Our Fans That We Love and then turned around and sold it, so they ended up having to take content out
>>
>>147165109
I heard that was the VAs fault, which wouldn't be surprising with how VAs seem like flakes and con artists who love drama.
>>
>>147164201
Isn't that the prime example of a conflict of interests? Shouldn't they get someone, oh I don't know, experienced in marketing and not just some EVN dev?
Most of what Raith posts are a trainwreck one way or another. He doesn't know how to word shit well, what with his "higher standards" and "best evn" and "i forgot about yukino".
Why on earth would you want him in charge of your evn?
>>
>>147165747
I'm betting that he's cheaper than those other PR people.
>>
>>147165241
It's only the VAs' "fault" in that they refused to have their work used with no compensation after they were recruited under false pretenses.

The Letter should've been a wake up call to devs. Their latest update shows that voice acting is still behind schedule due to other commitments the VA staff has. Backstage Pass was also delayed forever due to voice acting. There are many VA groups that will quote one price but try to charge you more later as well.

Animations might be cumbersome, might want to wait until webm sprites are fully implemented (unless they already are, I'm out of the loop).
>>
>>147170767
Obviously a lot of people come in with those ideas, but I don't think wanting to add puzzles is the same as saying "I have an amazing idea, and basically it's going to be KS but like sixty times bigger and there will be 200 routes and..." It's a fairly innocuous add, and doesn't really speak to bloat, or overtly high expections by itself. Personally, I think my project is going to follow sturgeon's law, especially since it's my first.

I do think you're coming off as overtly hostile for what appears to be no reason. I just wanted to know about how suited ren'py was to what I wanted to do, from a technical standpoint.

>>147171090
What do you define as "real time interaction"? Would it be okay to drag elements, check their locations on a grid, rotate faces on a 3d cube to match a pattern, etc?
>>
>>147169865
I feel like it's more on the blame of 'casting directors' than the VA talent themselves in a lot of cases.

I had success in just cutting out the middleman and contacting each VA separately and having them all agree to one set price for things. You don't need someone to tell whether or not a voice is good if you can clearly hear it in auditions and such

Again, if you can sum up your puzzle as a chain of "user interacts with menu/displayable, variables change", you can do it easily. Assets are going to be your main problem.
Have you tried renpy at all? Have taken a look at the cookbook section?
Also there's a game called Y;N, it's an adventure game with many puzzle elements, hidden object scenes etc, might want to check it out.
Also, if puzzles are as much an integral part of your game as VN elements, why not use gamemaker?
>>
>>147169865
>Backstage Pass was also delayed forever due to voice acting.
That was an issue with the studio, not the VAs.
>>
>>147171467
Wanting to add puzzles isn't. Wanting to add puzzles if you can't code might be. Anyway, yeah, cranky, welcome to 4chan.
>>
>>147172670
I do appreciate the spoonfeed, anon.

I really though, can't the description sum up pretty much every game? Where do you think I would run into problems?

I'll take a look at that, thanks.

As for trying ren'py, and game makers, I've looked into game makers, I've looked into unity, etc. I would have no problem sitting down and learning what's best, I'm just trying to get the right tool for the job, so to speak.

>>147172885
I have some experience coding, I took electives for it in university for a bit. I'm certainly not Carmack, but I'm not exactly on "Hello, world!" either.

Quite silly to imply I haven't been on 4chan long. I've been here a long, long time. I'm not upset by you saying those things, I just think it's kind of a knee-jerk that doesn't make a lot of sense in context.

Post your experiences with voice casting directors. Is it better just to fill that role yourself?
>>

As someone who voice acts, it's a mixed bag.

A great director> A good director>A great creator>a good creator>A shit creator>>> a shit director

Nice vn for girls? Pretty much anything will do but would prefer something with nice plot over tits not that i would mind though.
>>
>>147196391
Read the recommended pastebin right in the OP and see if anything appeals to you. There's no point in asking if pretty much anything will do.
>>
>>147197467
I played most of the pastebin games already, that's why i'm asking.

sorry, only about 60% of the EVN released cater to this niche demographic

I don't know what's good, so i asked for recommendations. I know there's shitload of vns for girls out there, but i have the best luck with finding the ones with shittiest plot.

Kissing ass and making those connections is a given.
Why do you think so many nobody artists draw "birthday gifts" and freebies for popular artists? It's not because they care, but because they know the popular artist will show off those drawings, which will bring them views and put them in good standing with the popular artist.
