Given how people lose after flying off-screen, the goal's presumably to get the opponent out while avoiding it yourself. Now that we know this, it makes sense that the ledges would play a central role. If you're off the stage, you want to get back. If the opponent is off the stage, you want to prevent them from getting back.

The options on ground are basically attack/block/dodge/throw. Block blocks everything instead of being directional or having high/low. Unsurprisingly the strength of an attack affects how far an opponent will fly. Plus even if the distance was static, it's obviously easier to launch a player above the top of the screen if they're already high up. so rather than just the dmg percent, whether it kills or not depends positioning and the attack that connected. A DP will kill a character from a higher HP than a jab. It's not rocket science.

It seems interesting but it just reinforces to me that it's not a fighting game at all, it's just too different. And I kinda tried to look up Smash tutorials on youtube before but they all talk about movement and advanced techniques but never go over the basics of a match flow like how footsies work etc. Is there any tutorial or something for traditional fighting game players who want to learn Smash? Seeing as how most tournaments now have Smash before SF I might as well learn what is happening on the screen while waiting.
