Looking to pump water to the surface. I have the magma sea pierced into a 1-wide hall w/ bridges.

This is a lucky embark, I have infinite white sand lol so green glass corkscrews will lead me to victory in making my first ever pump stack and I don't want to lose dwarves.

Please lend me your wisdom, /dfg/

3rd year into my high-savagery fortress, the only creatures I've seen are the same like, six giant fireflies. I can't even kill them cause they're always in the air and my marksdwarves refuse to kill them.

I was looking to capture some giant creatures and taming them but I can't get any other creatures to walk in. What's wrong with my embark site?
>>
>>146459328
No other creatures will spawn as long as those fireflies remain.

You should try stationing your marksdorfs beneath the flies before you give them the kill order. That might bypass any pathing issues caused by them being in the air.

The general is slow but persistent and not dead unlike some other generals (/cbg/ has died and /civ4xg/ has died a couple of times, /rlg/ is almost dead too for instance but is revived when a new game gets popular enough)

Only way to get through the magma sea is to go through one of the adamantine pillars. Those lead to hell.

You can also reach hell through the underworld portals found in goblin fortresses, but those tend to be broken.

To that guy who was going to make some suggestions - I'm a bit late, but fuck you.

I'd want to see some life/community oriented magic. Something along the lines of a village healer or wise man (or maybe the god directly) who bestows charms of fertility, good health or luck, simple wards, blesses crops. Some spells like ones that ensure a certain party's success in negotiations or war. These might just be placebo spells also.

Magic focused on emancipation, breaking shackles, dodging blows.

Magic which lets you seal yourself away for centuries inside ice or some other prison, able to be awoken by a stumbling adventurer. Doing this to a fort would be... Interesting.

Certain gods follow rune-based magic. With all their power manifesting from certain inscriptions.
Tattoos also.

I'm sure there is room for exploration of the idea of contagious or sympathetic magic.

Innately magical trees or gems.

Magic which is alive. That is, it is the essence of a living creature which is held against its will and used up, but if released flees back to its god.

>>
>>146461084
I'm probably going to be happy with how magic is implemented as long as it's kept rare. It should definitely be a form of esoteric knowledge descended from gods and myth related entities at world gen. Practitioners should only adopt one or two followers in their entire life if any, very few beings should have magic affinity (multiple levels of affinity for learning could be interesting), and I hope they don't necessarily have to be sentient. Like having a god that appears in the form of a leopard occasionally generating sentient magical leopards in the world if none currently exist. These may or may not be hostile depending on spheres.
>>
>>146462951
That's the great thing about the idea of a "fantasy slider" - quantity of these elements is a widely contested desire but also easy to fix, so we will be able to tailor that to our liking.
I'm quite sure I would enjoy high-magic worlds more at the moment but I'm glad toady is planning on allowing a lot of range.

I would love for tattoos to be a thing.
Also Malazan style warrens should be possible, especially if elements of the gods are open in the raws.

Oh and STALKER monolith. Would be sweet to have a "primordial shard" or something which oozes a corrupting power and has a group of fanatic protectors.

No name required.
>>
>>146461084
Expanding on the god magic, I feel almost obligatory that the gods will have the same, or even more mental complexity than dwarves. The reason for this is allowing the god to interfere with the earthlings in ways he wants. If he is a caring god, he´ll propose contracts with people to give them magic, and probably bless zones on the world making them infused with so much energy that they become alive, or something like that.
Or it could be a corrupt god that creates demons just to fuck up with us, and require sacrifices just to keep us alive.
This should all make sense in the myth part, as in, we already saw in this video(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49b7fUI7AEI 19:00)
There are things happening before the dawn of time that get made and destroyed, and cursed from gods.
If there were some god-psychologycal background behind those decisions, I would be erect for years.
What Im trying to acomplish with this bigass sugestion in the forums is a concise and well structured job detailing all aspects of magic the players should lnow and care, and how they should be implemented in the game using the standars toady wants.
>>
>>146465261
>probably bless zones on the world
I wonder if they can use this idea to overhaul good/evil biomes. A God of Death or something might be associated with a specific site on the overworld and an "evil" biome radiates out of it with effects depending on the god.

>Demonic God biomes spawning Demons out of surface magma pools
>Benevolent Gods of nature creating big areas where non-evil beings can recover from even the most grevious of wounds, plants bloom extremely quickly, Fluffy Wamblers thrive
>Gods of Magic creating areas where Mana flows freely and spells and magic effects are greatly amplified, wild creatures are magical, depending on the magic created at world gen

There's a lot of room for that kind of funky stuff.
>>
>>146464998
I dont know what malazan style warrens are, let me check it out..
Hmm, It makes sense, Im picturing it as a way of drawing energy from another plane.
Although very cool, the problem with that is that it would be very hard to balance in-game for technical reasons, like, what exactly gives you the power, a god?, then its contract magic, were the god wants you to follow their ethics or commands you to a mission,
If you draw energy from actual people in the other plane without giving anything in exchange, the mages would eventually kill the other people in the plane, If we consider mana as energy(whch I consider best choice)

Tatoos would be badass, and would make sense as glyphs or runes oneself ports.
The problem I have with rune magic is the same as the other types of magic.
If we consider magic logically, ´´a certain action is made in exchange for the adequate ammount of energy´´. That means equivalent exchange, Which is a good balancer by itself, and adds a point of realism that benefits the game.
The problem with that is that runes have the advantage of making magic available to non-users of magic, because runes are considered as an impression of magic the magician places on an object or person, buuut, they should still drain energy to function their intention (strenght bonus, or something like that). Unless the magician had the contract of a god that allows almost infinite energy, for the rune to god forever, we have two possible cases:
-The magician that implant the rune places a big initial reserve of energy on the rune, that makes it work for, say, 10 years, after that, the rune deactivates, or starts draining energy were it is placed. This is not a problem if it is placed on, say, a shield, but if its placed on a person, it could eventually kill him, by constantly draining his energy, until another magician recharges his tatoo or removes it.
>>
>>146464998
Sorry about all the rambling, it helps put my mind on its place about this stuff, and external input is always good. Its the first suggestion I make on the forums, and i truly want it to be somewhat trascendent.

Oh, the shard part exists, Toady even comments the ´´primordial egg shards in the video I placed before

Malazan

The magic system in those books also has an entrenched series of positions, based off a deck of cards, which gods fill with chosen mortals. For example, the king of death, queen of death, knight, etc.
Also, magic users don't necessarily have the consent of the house whose magic they draw from.

Its just to know what people actually want from the magic system.
I have my own Ideas about it, but If I want to make a good sugestion, Its good to have feedback from people to actually know what people want.
Besides, I have to investigate the different kind of magics in the world, and sometimes other people know stuff you dont. I didnt think about tatoo magic before that anon told me about it, but now it will be mentioned
>>
>>146472160
What you're trying to do is what the suggestion forum is for. People make suggestions, discuss them, provide feedback about what they want. In your example of tattoo magic, if anon wants to suggest it there's no reason he needs a representative to do it for him under the guise of some imagined consensus of an anonymous image board.
If you want to know what people actually want, make a post on the suggestions inviting the discussion. You're not going to find out by collecting rambles from anons in a general that's died 3 times in the last 2 days.
>>

Don't pretend that was your reasoning, one has nothing to do with the other. We can discuss the game or any aspect of it without needing a standard bearer to carry our flag to the forums for us.
I don't object to the discussion. I'm just trying to wrap my head around what you think you're accomplishing. This is far from an ideal place to do what you claim you're attempting to do. The place that you want to eventually deposit the fruits of your labor is explicitly for what you want to do.
My theory is that you lack confidence in your opinion, but you want to give it anyway, and want to be able to couch it in other peoples' opinions and say "This is what the community wants." Because you're too chickenshit to just say what you want if you aren't anonymous.

You actually have the gall to call others self-important when you're bragging about how long you've been here as though it makes you some form of authority, then you went on to act like you speak for everyone else and their interests in representation.

I'm sticking to this thread and not going near the forums, and I thought it was fun to make suggestions to help that guy out in making what would be a single large collection of ideas. I apparently wasn't the only one either. The only one with a problem here seems to be you, acting unnecessarily rude out of nowhere even though nobody asked for that input from you.
>>
>>146476779
There are a few ways. The easy way is just dig an access tunnel at the bottom of the pit. You can wall it off when the pit is done, or secure it with a raising bridge to allow later access. The micromanagey way is to dig staircases instead of channels and then remove the stairs with channels starting from the bottom. It's a real pain in the ass to do it without trapping dwarves at the bottom, but it's doable. The fast, fun and dangerous way is to use a cave in to collapse the floors where you want the pit to be.

I'm not claiming to represent anyone. I'm stating the simple fact that anyone who wants to make a suggestion can do it without anyone else's help, and further that anon's stated goal of establishing a consensus of the community's desires can't be achieved here. That's why there's a suggestion forum in the first place, and if that's really what he wants he can make a post there, without needing any legitimacy that he imagines he's gaining by claiming to represent a group.
It's unfortunate that it bothers you so much that people are mean on the internet. If you want a hugbox then your decision to stick to 4chan and eschew bay12 is probably a bad one. Kindness in enforced there. Fortunately, if I have a negative opinion of a person or an idea they express, I can freely share it on 4chan, and I don't give a shit if you find that offensive.

So what you're telling me is that a drawbridge will prevent building destroyers from entering my fort if I use it like a gate?
>>

Yes, that's what makes the game easy mode. I don't know why Toady never had a creature that could destroy them outside something like dragonfire if the material's burning point(?) is low

>I'm stating the simple fact that anyone who wants to make a suggestion can do it without anyone else's help

Nobody is denying that, but the whole point of a collection is that it doesn't need to be a bunch of different separated posts on the forums but rather a compendium that combines the ideas of either those that don't visit the forum or those that would go unnoticed in the forum. It's far more efficient and compact than telling people who aren't dedicated in their interest enough to step out of 4chan, sign up to the forums and make their own lists to go do that anyway. How is this so hard for you to wrap your head around?
There was no reason for you to go off on a tangent where you try to "psychoanalyze" someone acting nice to feel justified in your own disagreements. You could have just said you thought it was pointless, but instead you revealed to everyone how petty you really are by attacking the guy with unfounded assumptions and projecting. I don't want some hugbox either, but if you're going to be mean do it with some real cause otherwise you just wear out the impact for the rest of us by wasting it on pointless stuff like this. Any child can cuss and insult.

Yes, they're used for that more often than for actually bridging gaps. They're only vulnerable to melting, so a magma safe bridge will protect you from anything but a dragon, and an adamantine bridge will protect you from them too.

Reminder that Elves are the superior race.

Dwarves are obnoxious manlets, nothing but sacrifices, little nuggets and treats for Arbok. That's why you don't live too long, that's why you reproduce so much, and that's why you die with such tenacity.

Elves are the favored race, put on this world to oversee it as a part of nature itself. Elves don't become tempted by unnatural deities, elves cannot be corrupted by foul necromancy, and elves are definitely MORE attractive without beards. Only weak little Dwarves need armor of metal and mineral. Real elvish men can live and fight for thousands of years wearing nothing but a home-grown suit of wooden armor.

Elves>Dwarves, this cannot be refuted.

That's actually an interesting point. My eyes are shit and in all these years in DF and playing rouges as a kid, I've never gotten any visual other than the view being top down.
Do you see it different? Do rectangles let you see it at a bit of an angle? Like an SS13? ( despite using squares )

Text is also a fair point, which is why I usually run with whatever that nice renderer lazy newb pack has that allows for a different text font.
My main struggle is a trouble judging distance with rectangles. What could be a 10 tile hallway one direction is only a 6 tile the other.

Cannibalism is a respectable practice. We honor the falling dead by returning them to nature as nature would deem fit. welp, you got me, I aint even mad, thats one top notch psychoanalisis.
If you want a proper explanation, as you sure do
Im also ´´warping my head´´ on how exactly I should make the forum´s suggestion, and its a project that I have found surprinsigly hard to do exactly as I want to be. Im a little lost and overwhelmed in all this info I have found about magic, and was trying to find some inspiration to do this project right in an anonymous chinese board were the explicit theme of the talking is what I actually want to talk about.

Im not a representative of the community pal, I just prefere to post the definitive work on the forums After having gathered opinions everywhere. Or did you, when you had to give a paperwork on middle school (bout three weeks ago) just give the teacher hundreds of post-its and said:¨there ya go m8, enjoy´´.
Nor Am I trying to steal anybody´s ideas (thats why I actually ask for names) nor I want to explicitly say in the Df forums:
Hey, these are all the ideas the I+D group of 4chan has decided to be implemented in the game.

Building destroyers used to destroy bridges all the time. This meant that the easiest way to protect your fort from a building destroyer was to put a bridge out front over a moat: the building destroyer would run up to the bridge, destroy it, and then either fall to its doom (if the drop was high enough) or be trapped outside the fort (if the drop wasn't high enough).
>>
>>146479137
>the whole point of a collection is that it doesn't need to be a bunch of different separated posts on the forums but rather a compendium
It's a forum, not a blog. It's designed as a place for dialogue. Dropping a manifesto on the forums doesn't foster discussion or make it any more likely that Toady is going to see your idea. It will probably have the opposite effect. I'm not having trouble wrapping my head around the idea, I'm saying it's a bad idea, because my head is wrapped firmly around it.
And you're right. There was no need for me to post at all. But I wanted to share my opinion about what was being discussed in the thread. That's how these things work. You don't like my opinion and that's fine by me. I'll share another one.
I don't think you're naive enough to believe that anon's motivation was "being nice". Despite your slyly dismissive punctuation of psychoanalysis, it applies pretty well. The archetypal behavior of the impotent narcissist is as easy to recognize on the internet as in real life. Seeks attention with his "big idea", soliciting the validation and approval of those upon whom he bestows it by conning them into owning it. A classic manipulation method of attention whores throughout history. His oh-so-subtle namefagging only makes it more obvious.
As to my motivation, slapping an attention whore just because I can is all the motivation I need.
>>
>>146484609
Seems like the easiest way to fix that is to get building destroyers to distinguish between raised bridges and lowered bridges and only destroy the former, but I've never been able to understand toady's particular brand of autism.

Creatively use burrows or ensure that your marksmen do NOT spar/train at a different building if you want them to shoot.

Shooting at targets is lowest priority as of the job priority overhaul, so if you don't give them the option to spar, then they'll only shoot at targets. Super lame imo.

I equip all of my marksmen with a ranged weap and a short sword

it kinda bothers me to just have them sitting around instead of doing something useful

anyways, heres what i have right now
>>
>>146505804
I've played since 2008 and have seen it happen exactly twice over hundreds (probably more) of worlds. I was looking for them both times, so it's probably not as rare as that implies, but it's still pretty damn rare. If you want it to be more likely, increase the minimum required ocean squares in adv worldgen until you get spammed with endless rejections, then decrease it by little bits until you get a whole lot of rejections before a successful mapgen.

I always go medium size, low history, high everything else.

I'v found more Joyous Wilds in high saver worlds then I ever did in low.
>>

Depends on what you want. There's no optimal configuration, unless you mean performance-wise. As you might expect, the smaller the world, the smaller the embark, the fewer entities to track, the better your performance will be.

Yeah, as >>146506461 says, you're gonna have to deal with edge case behavior to get it to work.

I'm not sure how much the Vanod world-gen settings would have to be changed but it is a good starting point.

>>146506369
Yeah it's normal if they don't have jobs.

Got workshops setup?

Build a still, craftsman shop, carpenters, mason, and mechanics shop. You'll be able to cover early needs well enough, enable plant gathering if you haven't yet, you can designate a zone for it and they'll grab shit they can brew.

You need a 3 tile wide path to a trade depot. Once you get your carpenter making beds and mason making tables and chairs you can build them and [q]uery (set building tasks/prefs) them to create rooms off of them for bedrooms, offices, dining areas, and tavern/inn/library/temple stuff to keep them happy.

Generally until the first migrant wave you shouldn't really have anyone idling (at least in my experience), even then you should try and avoid many. Your miners should be constantly mining, to plan your fort and to obtain the stone you need for various constructions and items, you should have farms on the go being planted and probably gathering plants as well to sure up your early supplies, a woodcutter should be desolating the entire map until you get a carpenter's workshop (I normally take a woodcutter/carpenter) after which you might have hundred of logs and should focus on shitting out beds, bins and barrels. A mason should start with doors, tables and chairs (you'll probably end up needing a lot) which let you define rooms and meeting areas, stuff to keep your dwarves happy. That should account for 5/7 dwarves constantly having something to do, the last two depend on what you take. A fisherdwarf should constantly fish and clean fish, and many people might take a stonecrafter to help with pots for the barrel need early and mugs/crafts to get things you want from the first caravan, or maybe a brewer if you didn't take too much with you at the start.

>surrounded by an army of undead sea creatures from the depths of the ocean
>possibly even has appendages like claws or tentacles, maybe even both claws and tentacles, which it uses to rend coastal towns from the earth and bridge itself to the land so that the army of insects and undead may spew forth from it and collect more bodies
>possibly the result of jealous deities that dislike the islanders of old referring to it as a god
>possibly even a god itself, with the life on it's back being of it's sphere, and in it's death the populace corrupted to match
>covered in terrible vile fauna, carnivorous plants and devious natural traps alongside the rot-drawn populace

How would you even end such a beast? Would you slay the necromancers that raised it? Take that power for yourself? A corpse fortress? Imagine if this all happened in early history, and you now had to live in a world of corpses and decay that was conquered by a roaming island of death, trying to carve out a bit of civilization while uncovering the lost and forgotten artifacts of the lost that came before the reckoning?
>>
>>146507917
I think you're confused about what preferences are. Dwarves have skill levels showing you what they're good at, and have certain labours enabled by default under p > l, but those highlighted labours are just stuff they're allowed to do, you can let any dwarf do any task as long as it's highlighted in that menu, even if they don't have it mentioned in their skills.

Ooh, my bad anon. I thought you were refering to preferences as in the ones listed on dwarves' thoughts and preferences screen. Typically when preferences come up that's what is meant.
FWIW I think the preferences in the context you used it means the (v)iew preferences, not the dwarf's preferences (which are explicit in its status). Though I see how it's ambiguous enough to make the alternate assumption.
>>
>>146507976
Cool stories aside, do you think dwarf fortress will reach such fantasy relativism where a world might be spawned on the back of a giant and you would become a titan slayer with the help of magic gadgets and blessings from various gods?
Is the, for now, little power to affect the mythologycal world thats presented on the magycal/myth update the precursor for all this stuff?

werebeats have a random metal that affects them a lot more than the other metals, otherwise, no.
>>146508591 listen to him
>>
>>146508296
Werebeasts and night trolls have one random metal weakness and take reduced damage from every other metal. Silver's main benefit is that's very dense and heavy, thus making effective blunt weapons.
>>
>>146508296
My silver short swords have done work in the past when I had no good cutting metal.

I melted 'em down after that but I just wanted to make a lot of crundle/rutherer leather.
>>
>>146508552
Yes, shit like that is kinda the point of the myth arc, setting up a framework where these stories can emerge.

>>146508296
Worth noting that werebeasts take reduced damage from most materials and extra damage from a specific metal, not always silver.

Silver is great for blunt weapons though, only beaten by non-weapon metals, lead, gold, and platinum. Oh and of course slade, if you hack in a slade weapon or whatnot, bash people in the head with a chunk of stellar core, KERSPLAT!
>>
>>146508296
The only real "kryptonite", as far as I know, is whatever random metal the werebeasts are weak against - some googling seems to indicate that they take ten times the damage from the weakness and half damage from all other materials, but I don't know the accuracy of that.

As far as I know, the only way to figure out what werebeast is weak against what is to go around in adventure mode and ask people about it.

Also, by the way, silver being monster kryptonite isn't a universal thing in fantasy - the Witcher does it because that's the way it works in Polish folklore, IIRC, but there's all kinds of other wundermaterials out there in other myths. Generally iron and anything to do with meteors.
Silver is a popular one, though. Mostly because it's the Hammer Horror Wereman weakness, and that's what modern werewolves can be traced back to, but still.

>>146508929
Generally silver is too soft for cutting, I think? It doesn't have much of an edge, at least.

Yeah, that's pretty much the classic FPS assassination there. Endless caveins, huh?

Does that river also have a waterfall or were you lucky?
>>
>>146514660
A lake actually. The volcano's not that bad, the water will obsidianize the surface after a few million collapse notifications and then it's business as usual.
The waterfall drains the lake off the map though, because the surface of the river is lower than the bottom of the lake. Which will never end. And destroy fps for all time. And it's heavily forested on top of that, so pretty much the perfect storm of fps destruction.

Well, if you can stand the FPS you could perhaps try pumping some magma into the waterfall to dam it. Or just build an ordinary dam via screw pumps and walls - pumping the lakewater away from the waterfall, perhaps.

Is the map in a temperate biome? If it is then you'll get a chance to dam it come winter.

Might be better to just abandon the fort, though.

>You have arrived. After a journey from the Mountainhomes into the forbidding wilderness beyond, your harsh trek has finally ended. Your party of seven is to make an outpost for the glory of all of Tekkud Libash.
>There are almost no supplies left, but with stout labor comes sustenance. Whether by bolt, plow or hook, provide for your dwarves. You are expecting a supply caravan just before winter entombs you, but it is Spring now. Enough time to delve secure lodgings, ere the wolves get hungry. A new chapter of dwarven history begins here at this place, Dedrosoggez, "Goryhole". Strike the earth!

It is 15th Granite, 200, Early Spring.
We are at 107 z. The other three rivers are at 100 z. The members of our party are:
Likot "Wheelspets" Kolbab, expedition leader
Nomal "Leaguetour" Ilashsigun, miner
Urister "Thunderfortresses" Amudgeshud, miner
Kikrost "Mobbedmirror" Odgúbònul, carpenter and woodcutter
Ast "Bolteddabbled" Alåthgikut, mason
Kahlish "Citymurk" Inethbothon, stone crafter and bone carver
Vabôk "Roomauthors" Mosusardes, farmer, brewer, and cook

With us we have two cats, two dogs, a yak bull, two yak cows, and a horse.

At the moment, our primary goal is to channel an entrance to what will be our fort, to make a trade depot, a stockpile, a dormitory, an office, an underground meeting place, and a farm.
>>
>>146546729
>a dormitory
I used to scorn the dormitory people, but having a unique bedroom for my novice cheesemaker migrants x 120 is just ridiculous, and the difference in good thoughts can be offset fairly easily as long as they're not noble. Dormitories are the way I'll be going from now on, unless I really want an aesthetic fort.
>>
>>146546729
We should also set up a craftsdwarf shop, a bowyer and produce bolts to hunt some game to trade to the caravan.
A few cage traps wouldn't hurt either. Any report on local wildlife ?

5th Slate, 200, Mid Spring.
Shortly after our arrival, it started to rain vile muck. This caused some dwarves and animals to get feverish and nauseous. Luckily we already dug enough to make a temporary meeting area, and the vile muck rain was quickly replaced by normal rain. We made a trade depot, a main stockpile, a dormitory, a carpenter's workshop and a craftdwarf's workshop. We also dug out a hall, and made room for a still, a food stockpile, and some farms.
During our work, it started raining vile muck again. Most dwarves seem to deal with it, but Farmer Vabôk is despairing a bit.

There are several ruined towns, one of which is huge as fuck and contained tons of books describing historical events in the town, and one of which with the temple still intact. There are several nomadic tribes wandering the landscapes, and occupying the ruined hamlets.

Italozon Akest Sat, "Neutraldepress the Domination of Strks", a peach wood door. On the item is an image of Mistêm Shrinetreaties the dwarf and dwarves in sand pear wood. Mistêm Shrinetreaties is surrounded by the dwarves. The artwork relates to the ascension of the dwarf Mistêm Shrinetreaties to the position of queen of The Pick of Axes in 74. We will surely make this fine door the entrance to our fortress.

It has to do with how all your gear being made of cloth and wood is objectively retarded.

Seriously, elves are so painfully retarded. They don't know how to sharpen pieces of stone and stick them on arrows? They don't know how to use obsidian shards to make razor sharp knives and such? The PC is the only one who can have an elf sneak up on some gobbos, choke them, and take their METAL GEAR?

Their towns are fucking terrible, the most unfun, pointless locales possible.

Clothes aren't indicative of anything other than default racial volume; a given shirt could be worn by a size 40000 or size 90000 dwarf just as easily, and the game models the thickness based off the size of the wearer rather than any objective properties of the item.

Either way, one presumes the fact that elves and dwarves have 85% of the volume a human does on average to suggest the former is thinner and the latter is shorter. I haven't personally seen much in the way of DF art about squat, wide elves and tall willowy dwarves, but YMMV.

They could kill the offspring, but maybe if they just kill the males and keep the females it would be more productive.

Alternatively, they could castrate the males and have a servant class of eunuch half-elves.

Started playing Factorio the other day and I think I can't ever go back. The thing which fascinated me the most about Dwarf Fortress was the complex tech tree - but it's completely unbalanced. Factorio however is a real game with graphics on top of that. And crazy fast performance-wise.
>>
>>146560567
I don't think toady ever fixed the issue with your larger dorfs still being unable to use larger weapons. Bolts/arrows are functionally identical but the crossbow is slightly larger for more effective bashes

Not really cause swords are by and large an abortion. Small squads of 3-5 dorfs for maximum control. Axe for decap/bisecs on mineral/metal shit. Spears for large shit. War hammers for well armored. Bulk train non-criticals on picks with strip mining or xbow shooting stuff on the surface. Cross train your hammer/xbow dorfs until you have a pretty solid core that are fast and swole as fuck and pretty good teachers. Unless you're playing with modded races they all work fine against common elves, humans and goblins.
>>
>>146561292

War hammer's similar force but over a smaller area which really makes a difference.

Still bad in adventure mode. If it's armored war hammer it. Spear large shit. Axe if you need a bisection or decapitation as the only way to kill it.

Getting three different weapon skills, and weapons, when one works just fine?

Once you get good with a sword, its just as quickly lethal against armored foes as a warhammer, and I found it to be faster even. Likewise its perfectly fine for killing megabeasts with, again just stab 'em. And it parts people with their limbs just fine.
>>
>>146561805
I think crossbows still use macedwarf skill.
>>
>>146561978
They perform better at their critical job. If I had to pick one weapon I'd pick spear since it topples anything but colossus and inorganics which you don't have to fight at all unless you play with mods that add fully armored steel then I'd be all in on warhams. Not a big deal since you cycle as you hit legend+5 anyway.

Tilesets from old versions work fine. Dwarf fortress uses the same amount of characters today as it did at release. It's not even possible for a tileset to lose compatibility.
>>
>>146562541
tilesets are for casuals anyway
>>
>>146562541
Not entirely true. Sometimes the Toad gives a tile an additional use. For example, in 0.42, a character that had earlier only been used for armour stands now also became used for dancing dorfs, making that character "unmoddable".
>>
>>146562323

Although specialized weapons are generally better at their job, its unclear whether they're so much better as to outweigh the benefits of just training a single skill.

Once I embarked over a LARGE cavern. I mean this thing was so deep that it went down for about 30 levels before it actually hit the floor. I constructed a series of ramps and bridges spiraling around massive stone stalactites allowing my miners to harvest the ores from the ceiling and walls.
The biggest problem was that troglodytes were constantly climbing up the cave walls and attacking my miners. To solve this I handpicked members of my pre existing military to form an elite squad, "The God breakers".
These were the toughest sons of bitches I've ever seen. They would climb down into the cave with a bunch of rations, and come back up a few weeks later, grab some more, and head right back down. Once my squad leader held off 3 blind cave ogres to buy time for a group of peasants to escape. After the last ogre fell off the spire he JUMPED AFTER HIM. Presumably because he wasn't done beating the crap out of him.
His body was never recovered so I like to imagine that he's still down there with his trusty steel short sword, waiting for another challenge.

The tile itself is in the same place on the tileset as it was the day dwarf fortress released. Every tile will continue to function even if new uses for those tiles are implemented. There is no compatibility loss, as there aren't new symbols, and the existing symbols have the exact same relationship to one another on the tileset as they have always had.

>14th Granite, 201, Early Spring
A year has passed since the fortress Goryhole was started by The Golden Guts. Our population grew from 7 to 22 dwarves. We built many workshops and a large farm. Our Carpenter Kikrost created an artifact, Italozon Akest Sat. Our Craftsdwarf Kahlish created many masterworks. We started a small army of three axedwarves. We have plenty food and drinks, thanks to our farmers. We created 47097 wealth, we imported 49417 wealth, and we exported 1610 wealth.

Now it is early spring. The elven caravan has just arrived, but has not yet contacted our leader.

The weather outside has been bad throughout the year, but it seems that the vile muck rain is contained to the northwestern part of the map. Perhaps in the future we can built a bridge or dig a tunnel to explore other parts.

I will give my savefile to anyone who is interested. Please continue our legacy fortress and tell us what happens.

So I did a little test with embarking civs.
Turns out (at least in my game) dwarves from different civs have very different attributes.

After several prepare for your journey carefully embarks iv noticed:
One civ is comprised of extremely strong/willpower dwarves with ADHD (poor focus)

Another civ always gives lots of highly social weak/sickly dwarves.

Another civ has full on retard strength dwarves (high streght/end lousy memory/intellect/creativity/social/exc)

They kind of do, but not the way you mean. Most of the population of any civ will be made of nonhistorical figures, who don't have attributes at all until they're loaded onto a site with a player, and their attributes are genned on the spot randomly within the range defined in the raws.
Historical figures might have attributes tracked in worldgen, but I'm doubtful. If they do those attributes are stored somewhere that legends can't see them and in such a way that skill gains don't affect them. It's unlikely as well that they're genetically determined if they are tracked in worldgen, as a significant portion of histfigs at any given time don't have parents, having been pulled from an abstract population.
The only place that players can see genetic inheritance in DF is during fort mode. Even there it's hard to measure any real effect that genes have outside of size and appearance modifiers. None of the eugenics projects on bay12 have ever been able to demonstrate attribute heritability, but it's hard to get a sample size on a useful scale. We're kind of left to take it on faith that Toady wasn't lying or wrong when he said they were heritable in whatever dftalk it came up in.

UIs like Therapist/LNP will definitly make the game more comprehensive. Depending on your personal taste, you might also find the game easier to understand when using creature graphics.

HOWEVER, both of those need to be updated every time DF is updated, and unless you learn to play without them(and then maybe start using them for convenience), you'll shit up the general with posts like
>LNP update when? I can't play without it!
>Therapist update when? I never learned how to change labours without it!
>Creature graphic update when? I can't be bothered learning what the heck "g" stands for!
...and so on.

Just learn how to play vanilla first. If you think a particular UI makes playing more convenient, or that creature graphics make the game prettier, feel free to use them, but PLEASE learn to play vanilla first.

>>
>>146579951
>That's not a thing that can happen in vanilla

Wrong, friendo. I've seen it happen as well. Most amazingly, I've seen a family of lizard demons, which should normally be impossible as they have the UNIQUE_DEMON flags, but I would set demon types to 1000 or so, which would often generate demon types with the same name. It doesn't seem to rigorously check for breeding specifics in worldgen (for example, a civ comprised of people who become adults at 12, but die of old age at 1 year, still can continue to exist and even raise tombs for their frequently dead rulers).

Though the two parents had spheres etc., the children were fairly "normal" fishermen, rangers, etc.

By pure coincidence, two lizard demons of opposite sex and different domains were taken prisoner in wars over the years, and were imprisoned in the same village.
>>
>>146580412
Scorching is anything hotter than hot, so it covers a pretty huge range of temperatures. Some scorching biomes aren't hot enough to kill creatures. Some are. Just leave one chained up outside and see if it starts melting.
>>
>>146580631
Everything seems fine in super scorching environments to me much of the time, until I pick up a rock and it evaporates. Usually, I'm fine until it rains, in which case one drop of the superheated rain water will liquefy all the fat in my body and cause it to evacuate my body in a slurry of boiling bloody lard until I die.

I'm suspicious. The only ways demons enter civilizations are as the heads of goblin civs or impersonating human deities. The deity-fakes don't take part in battles, so you would've needed two lizard demons leading different goblin civs get captured in battle by the same civ and imprisoned at the same site. Then they would have to marry and reproduce. I don't know that the latter is even possible, but the former would require an RNG miracle.
I'm not saying you're lying, but I suspect you're at least misremembering. How sure are you that you weren't using a mod that added a "demon" civ? Do you happen to still have the world?

Nope. If I modded anything, it was cultural values -- slavery for example, I noticed I encountered demon prisoners more often when I upped it, though in the post .34 versions I have yet to see demon prisoners.

>How sure are you that you weren't using a mod that added a "demon" civ?

Literally 100%. I have never played such a mod, nor could I fathom how that would work. Perhaps one could put all the possible demon names down in the entity file for which races were possible?

However you slice it, there's no mod that would make demon rulers of goblin civilizations more likely to be captured.

And yes, there was a time that I tried to get the perfect world by generating endless new worlds and combing through the lists of surviving demons, megabeasts, night creatures etc. for fun all day.

So why not just learn your g's and k's and be able to play any update at any time without having to deal with incompatability. You have functional eyes and a look keu. Use them

Proper naming methods did away with a need for dwarf therapist and dfhack while awesome can be done without until it's up to date.

Looking back up the reply chain I think you may be confused on some of what's being discussed. The goblin leaders referred to aren't "goblin demons" or something like that. They're demons that are also the leaders of goblin civs.
Assuming you're >>146579149, I think maybe you confused some normal animal men with demons. >>146580545 and >>146581579 described what is probably the only edge-case where you can get a bunch of demons in one place without breaching hell in fort mode. What you're describing doesn't sound like that. If, in some astronomically unlikely twist of rng, one civ captured the leaders of a bunch of goblin civs and imprisoned them all in the same site, you couldn't have gotten them as followers for a multitude of reasons. Civ leaders can't be followers except in the case of doing a demon's slab quest, which is pretty much the closest adv mode has to a victory condition. If they weren't civ leaders, and hell-released demons had somehow ended up in a village (you would know if you had released them), then they would've been hostile to everything that wasn't a demon and killed you immediately.

It's not hard. You just follow step by step how to install the pieces.

ASCII is just using the look command to view shit and going yup that's x until you got it.
No Dwarf therapist is fine. Have slightly more generalisted labor assignments than you normally would and assign custom professions with they names for modifiers and it runs slick as greased owl shit. In your config files set dwarves to no labors on arrival. If you don't need someone for shit just assign them as a hauler and whenever you need shit you just go suck a hauler up.
No dfhack hurts but you'll live.

Think toad's gonna take a look back at caravans some time soon? I'd like being able to reliably import more than like 4 of something. I could understand if I had to get them some sick profit first. It hurts when you're trying to get a lot of Bauxite, kaolinite, hematitem kimberlite, olivine, pitchblender, rutile, serpentine, malachite, cobaltite, black bronze or lay pewter and your embark isn't on your side. I think that's all in the code so it's not like dfhack can take a crack at it.
>>
>>146619946
The materials are totally dfhackable, there's even a couple of specific tools for it, changelayer and changevein, tiletypes can do a lot as well, but is harder to use, and gm-editor can change even more but is of course harder to use still.

You have to change one line to no or migrant or whatever it is one time per version. Probably right around the same time you let your dorfs make 2h weapons, wood armor/weapons, eat sentients, and everyone else to make roads/bridges/forts/tunnels/tombs for a more fun albeit smaller worldgen.

>>146621925
You always want more haulers. They're the grease that keeps everything running smooth. Once you have your core 55 working dorfs it's all gravy on standby hauling, training or killing things until you have a good 130 dorf military

You don't even have to assign their names if you toggle the init to already strip all their existing non-hauling jobs.

Hi /dfg/, I made a freeware game a little while ago that I think you might enjoy. It doesn't have nearly the number of features or complexity of DF, but but involves building and management in a sort of abstract way. I'd like to think it has a certain mathematical depth to it.

You build a power grid, and try to power houses - all in the setting of the Wireworld automaton.

It has somewhat of a learning curve to learn the rules, but once you learn them, it's fairly intuitive. I'm quite proud of it.

>Nobody drops the fire clay they were using to build the roof to the butcher/livestock pen for the goat and brew tavern
>Humans kill all the slowpokes and idiots then leave
Well I guess? Not a fan of my dorfs treeing themselves though. Dorf science found out if raising discipline stops their retardation?

>>146624919
Pretty much, if it's not a doctor, grower, nurse, or a forger you can put them in a big civilian marks squad and have them shoot at wildlife/prisoners for a year to reach 10-15 skill then rotate the next batch in. if you have your fortifications facing inward they wont get shot as much by enemy masters so it's less impactful on you to risk them.

1. They weren't civ leaders at the time of being imprisoned.

It's based on Wireworld - with added rules (like decreasing current over the wire, and overall costs and fees for components).

Once you learn the rules and get familiar with the automaton, it's pretty intuitive to lay lines that deliver power - but optimizing your grid to deal with space and money constraints takes more thought beyond this.

Also, I would say that, once you have a nice grid going, watching the simulation run has a similar appeal to watching Game of Life, albeit a bit more predictable, and perhaps calmly periodic.

Ok for you people with like 50+ dwarves in your fort.

How does your FPS not slow to a crawl?

On my high spec machine I can't handle over 20 dwarfs on a 2x2 embark without crawling under 15 fps.

Check active alerts
Check burrows
Make sure the path is clear from raised bridges/locked doors
Make sure there's an unbroken path to it. Especially if you're using ramps
Turn off his hauling, construction, and any other major labors so he's out of the queue
Toggle do job now
How far is the stockpile and craftdwarf from your fort?
Add a dorm and dining room every 50 z-levels and directly above. If you're using bedrooms, reassign theirs to above the workshops.
>>
>Leatherworker mood
>Aw yeh, gon git sum gud armo-
>It's a buckler

>>
>>146634841
I haven't set any alerts/burrows. The path's clear because the raw adamantine is in a stockpile. I'll recheck that nothing's blocking after this undead siege but I really can't imagine it's blocked. I turned off everything except strand extraction for him. I'll put it at max priority in the job manager (would this have the same effect as toggling "do job now"?) I'm on a 2x2 embark that's mostly got one path from the top to the bottom, so I don't think it's too far for him. After reading someone here say they're switching to dorms I decided I felt that way too, so no individual bedrooms. I could make/assign him one right next to the workshop/stockpile.

It just seems weird. I toggled the job on for others too, and just finally took off everything else for one dwarf, now he's walking around with No Job. Hmm.
>>
>>146635212
Jesus fuck man. why are you using the manager for that. Is the order even processed? Just put the job in the shop and tell it do now.

Guess what happens if he has to run 160 tiles every time he gets hungry, sleepy, or thirsty. If you aren't gonna move your fort down or move magma up either let them be dorm dorfs or make them full fledges members of the forge club and assign them bedrooms in the magma forges with its larder and dining room so they have all they need close by
>>
>>146633121
Your FPS shouldn't be that low. My most recent fort is a 3x5 embark, 7 years old, full of ridiculously large rooms, has just under 80 dwarves, and has a whole shit ton of magma moving around, and I was getting over 40 fps on a high end machine.

It will if you intend to use magma very much. I don't know if magma workshops still function if temperature is disabled, but you at least won't be able to burn things.

This is what happens when dwarves try to live aboveground. They see some undead across a ravine, through fortifications, and freak out to the point of not being able to finish the staircase that would get them down and back underground.

This might actually be the end. The more I keep unsuspending the down-portion of the staircase, the more that get stuck up there. Pretty ridiculous.
>>
>>146639750
The mug towards the south-end of that top "room" is covering the working staircase. So dwarves carrying a block up from the fortress, intending on completing that downstair in grey to the bottom of the pic, get spooked when they get to the top of the stairs and run down to join the crowd panicking on the top of the wall.
>>
>>146639750
First off, don't have full fortifications. Master bow/xbow users in sieges can shoot right through them no problem and because of you having them full, they just have to shoot in your general direction to hit anyone

You don't want a lot of outward fortifications in general because of the previous. build a gatehouse where enemies will chase wooden doors and restrained bait animals under your dorfs and be shot as they pass by. This will minimize the problem with you shooting axegobs while bowgobs injure half your marksdorfs. Have a couple outwards at key points above/below and you're good to go. You don't want to use them most of the time.

Next, you only want 1x1 walkways adjacent to fortitifcations. Firing through them has a skill requirement if you're not adjacent. This leads to stand around disorder by the rookies. Have a 1x1 walkway and they'll at least be firing.

Don't put all that useless flooring when you haven't gotten the exterior wall up to block Line of sight. If you absolutely must have filler, put a 1 wide floor behind the wall then use temporary bridges. Just be careful to make sure you don't build things without proper support.

And since you're above ground there's a special mention for grass. Unsurprisingly, grass burns and once it's on fire there's little you can do about it other than suck it if you didn't prepare. Put the occasional thin paved road firebreaks to minimize damage from fire breathing titans and the rare surviving durrgin. You should definitely rig up magma land mines surrounded by stockpiled booze though. Good shit.

Roasts

What you should do for your embark is 1x3 ramp down to the magma sea and then bucket brigade or otherwise irrigate a growing room down there. Either embark with or dig up some weapons grade metals and get suits up

Using roasts, buy everything metal, melt what isn't useful. Then order all the metal and can be metal shit. Forge that into weapons and armor then buy/mine, melt, and forge more every caravan. Read the melt article for efficiencies for choosing what to buy first.

Setup a good uniform. Read the armor articles

Set squads of 5 anybodies. If they lack a civ skill go have them mine or gather plants. Have squad-1 to 2 dorfs train all year in an above ground barracks unless you're deep and will never surface for saving anything. I dunno if the new focus stuff effects them but whatever. If you care, try to make the squads by their base agility. A very fast dorf with 3 clumsy's and a very clumsy is gonna run ahead, get knocked out and die before the others are even halfway to the fight.

Your mad dosh will bring you a good surplus of 50 dorfs. Focus on the key things. Mining, roasts, and melting until you're established. You don't need a single dorf for a single job for all that extra shit. Share the load. Of these dorfs about half will die for various reasons mostly related to their AI being fucking retarded, projectiles projectiling, refusing to replace their shoes while you lack a full layered clothing set, and just bad dice rolls. This is fine.

You can do things with lever linked doors/bridges and doors in the sides of your gatehouse to split enemies into more manageable groups and use L bends to render enemy marksmen less useful. Swarm tactics. Incapacitating them first with your rangers.

Take my elite embark profile free of charge!

http://pastebin.com/NdNtvjN5

Note, I'd reccomend droping the picks/axe and picking up an anvil if you start with access to an iron anvil/coal/lignite/copper

You might even want to bump up to bronze with casserite as well. I typically take 120ish bit-coal on embark.
>>
>>146643392
If you need a cheap supplement, if you have a lot of bone or wood lying around you can have 5-10 dorfs run around shooting at shit for a year for a legendary marks set. As miners reach legendary/legendary+5 retire them Wait a bit. Put them into a squad and have them train with assigned picks. they'll spar defenses up in a jiffy. Keep rotating old miners into the military and migrants into miners. They aren't perfect but they form a fairly effective militia.

>>146642783
Took 14 fucking pages and my hammer lords foot to finally crush its skull. Thankfully, despite probably being infected, she'll die to blood loss or no water long before it becomes an issue.
>>
carpentry, mining, masonry, and a bunch of that other shit aren't going to give you a significant return on your investment and will be rapidly trained on the job. What up?
>>
>>146643592
Starting with picks generally assumes a quick embark imo.

If I'm starting with an anvil and planning on making shit it looks different. I typically start with a smith and some furnace operators and some other stuff.
