For a single route yes. Some even less.
When you say other VNs are you talking about stuff like Ace Attorney/Dangan Ronpa? If so then a single route in otoge takes far less that a playthrough of those, but individual routes have more unique sections than the slight deviations you get in those types of games.
In general you're looking at 20-30 hours completion time for an otoge.

So any theories for what's going on in Haitaka? I'm guessing the whole town is some illusion she's conjuring up and most/everyone is actually dead, or she put them in a time loop set before some disaster.

As for the returning Kokuchous, reincarnations or previous lives? Considering which three it is reincarnations makes more sense, but the setting has that medieval/fantasy vibe.

White guy is being included in the stage play for Kokuchou so it looks he'll be used to tie the two stories together.

Can't say I'm interested in any upcoming BL games. I was kind of interested in Hashihime because I like its setting, but then read its trial and it felt like it was trying way too hard to be quirky to borderline obnoxious levels, and is just yet another style over everything BL game, this time riding off the Taisho era's popularity.

AS and ASAS were the only good Utapri games in years, that's why I don't have any hopes. Plus, the princes are already milked beyond necessary and they'll have routes in this new game, the writing will probably suck ass like most of their routes since Repeat.

My original idea was to play on the train (I spend at least 10hrs commuting a week, so something to do would be nice) but even with my decent headphones they don't block out enough background noise to hear the game clearly, and I'm often too tired in the morning and evening to be bothered reading.

Finished three routes.

Censoring the sex worked out surprisingly fine, instead other things they censored were awkward. Eg. stuff like the infamous thumb scene were made vague, there's completely rewritten lines, removed countries names that Japan conquered. The right wing extremist's route got a lot of line and word censoring and rewriting throughout it.

They also removed tongues in french kissing CGs. Didn't think that'd be 2lewd compared to other things that make it.

There's a handful of new voiced scenes with CGs. The omake section compiled SSs that were in cool-b, on the blog, and on the website. There's also a profile section.

I've played Oreshika 2 and it had a shitty story, but since I like the general mechanics of the game I'm now wondering if I should try out the first game.

Oreshika 1's story is pretty simple to allow more room to create emergent stories within your clan: Your mother and father have been slain by the demon Shuten-Doji, and to prevent any would-be avengers coming after him, he has placed a curse on you and your bloodline: you may not breed with other humans, and your kind grow to maturity and die within two years. Luckily, the gods have taken pity on you, and pledged to allow your bloodline to carry on by blessing you and your clan with their children in exchange for your favour. The goal of the game is simple: cross over the corpses of your forefathers, defeat Shuten-Doji and lift the curse from your clan, no matter how many generations it takes. Along the way, you learn the secrets of Kitsuto and his relation to Itsuka. (Both characters appear in 2, but they probably don't mean much to anyone who hasn't played the original.)

For anyone not familiar with Oreshika: The path to killing Shuten Douji is entirely up to you, the player. Every member of your clan is randomly generated, from their portrait to their hobbies to their death quote, although you can influence their statistics by careful eugenics with the gods, name them, chose their classes, develop clan techniques you can pass from parent to child, forge signature weapons, etc. Although your clan members have a two year expiration date, they can die in battle at any time, so be careful! No two playthroughs are the same.

The main selling point of 1 over 2 is that 1 has everything that made 2 good without the Nueko bullshit. It's much more freeform in that regard. It also utilizes 2D portraits as opposed to 3d models, which might be a selling point to certain people.

Although Oreshika 1 is not in English, it can be easily emulated for either PSP or PS1 making it readily available. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys classic RPGs, the joy of building a great clan and the inevitability of death.
