The one that has the current most promise.
If you don't have an idea, then go play some games from your backlog.
If you have multiple ideas, flesh them out as detailed as you can and you should decide which one appeals to you more.

If you have no ideas, and don't like/play vidya, then you might as well just find a new hobby.

Using the official releases, you can distribute your game without disclosing the source code, but you're not allowed to modify the engine code.
By compiling Xenko yourself, you're allowed to modify and compile the engine but you must distribute all the source code with your game.

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
>>
>>146307796
More like you are contorting your shapeless girth into the square hole that the devs built, with some of your flab always sticking out and breaking down part of the walls so that you can do things the devs didn't account for.

Still easier than building a form-fitting hole for yourself when your shape is nonexistent and it's physically impossible to make it align with your body's limits properly without leaving some unnecessary slack. You also may or may not accidentally put hard edges on the inside and destroy your blubber.
>>
>>146308505
Using Unity, you have to get an enterprise license which they wont even tell you what it costs to even have source code access at all
>>
>>146307951
It's weird, because there's nothing fundamentally wrong about saving and loading the progress of a suspended coroutine. It's either a particular state of a state machine (e.g. in C#) or a closure (e.g. in Lua).

>>146308505

That literally means in the first instance you do what you normally do with any other engine.

In the second instance when you modify the engine, you distribute the engine code.

how is that a limitation? and how hard was that to understand?

Is there a guide to hotkeys that I can print out and recite every morning during the dedicated Blender-basics-learning year that is required to learn the Blender basics?

So I just got into Gamemaker and I'm quickly finding out I'm a literal code retard. I tried making a platformer but can't make the character jump in a way that I understand the code involved. So the next logical step is "Fuck that, Next project". Concepts and art really aren't a problem for me, but the actual coding is. How would I reference a ds_grid inside a a ds_list inside a ds_map?
Ideally, the Map contains NPC names, list contains relationship level needed for dialog, grid contains the dialog lines.
Unless you guys have a better suggestion for building a dialog relations thingy.

Now unless I'm missing something, the way to actually create a grid from that is by doing this:

>>
>>146313813
You just kinda stack the code like so:

ds_list_add(ds_map_find_value(ds_grid_get(maze,50,50),"Exits"),north);

This is not a great system though, dialog is a bitch and it's generally better to use XML files or something and access them with a parser to do your system.

Would somebody please explain something to me?

I've come here numerous times over the last 3-4 years. Every time I spend 2-3 months lurking and "making games", except I don't make any games.

I keep starting engines which I drop and delete after a few days. I have no ideas for games. I barely play games at all.

I program since I was 15. I've theoretically stopped coding in November 2015. At the time I left the last open source project I was still a member of. I don't find programming fun anymore... yet I came here again this month.

A B or C for dialogue boxes? The camera would start centered on the first speaker of a cutscene and then populate further dialogue boxes centered on other characters in the scene, re-centering as needed if they're too far off from the camera.

The +2 number over the emblem is the current reputation the player has with the character, with the emblem being the faction. Reputation ranges from -9 to +9 since I don't want to cram too many digits in there. I considered doing some sort of graphical representation for reputation, sort of like Harvest Moon has different-colored hearts, but I don't have any good ideas for that yet

Which is why I used the word "graph". I don't believe real-life conversations are well-modeled by trees/DAGs, it's just something easy to implement in software and people tend to forgive the unrealism it introduces because "it's just a game bro"

If you were trying to say "dependent on each other" and not "independent of each other", which you utterly failed at BTW, that's not what I'm positing. The components are just data, they can't depend on each other. Systems are just functions, they can operate on more than one component at once easily without inducing coupling.

The shield cube was changed to an actual shield model, along with the mouse cursor getting some changes to fit the new camera.

I gave it a laser pointer to help with depth, and I added smoke puff particles to come out of the tank cannons after a spike ball is shot. I'm also following acceptable color templates from a generator that makes a random set of only complementary colors to go together for each level, but if I'm still off with my colors let me know.

Oh and I removed camera motion blur and slowed down the camera speed.

Games don't perfectly model human conversation though. In games you can/should go back and relisten to the first half of a converstion. Some branches of the conversation wrap back around to the previous parts. Also, some statements can be said at many places in the conversation, so you put them in the tree multiple places.

trees are a subset of graphs anyway

It's fine if you want a game where the story matters and you can't say everything and hear everything because that's not how life works.

But in some games, NPCs don't need to simulate life, and need to have repeatable access to their conversation. Use a graph for that

if you don't want it to be about grinding then you should stay away from stats, and if you want that to be interesting then you should think about what kind of variety of moves the player can pull off, think about making it movement based somehow, for example attacking enemies from the side, pushing them (into spikes or traps maybe) have weapons that have different effects and can serve as effective loot when just making the numbers go up isn't enough

so basically turn based dark messiah

You ABSOLUTELY should not pursue one.

I went in with the expectation that I would learn development and design as well as the specific programming skills I would need for game dev (though nowadays I'm interested in doing non-games programming as well).

Instead I'm thousands of dollars in debt from taking classes that basically taught me nothing. Other than extremely extremely basic programming concepts almost everything I know now is stuff that I learned on my own time and not in any of the courses I took as part of the degree program. Waste of fucking time and money when I would have been better off just going for CompSci or something similar once I realized programming is what I enjoy most out of gamedev aside from art (which I can't do at all).

Maybe other school's programs are different and much better but just going off my experience I really wouldn't recommend it unless you're hearing otherwise from actual devs employed by actual companies that are successful.

Hey guys, Chad here again. Still looking for the following for my game:

- 4 programmers (C++ only)
- 5 3D artists (Blender only)
- 2 concept artists (GIMP only)
- 2 sound makers (Fruity Loops only)

My idea will redefine video games as we know it. I've had a few emails from people asking for the game concept prior to joining the team but I just can't give that information out in case it gets stolen. You'll have to sign a contract and NDA first.

As for payment, 40% of the total game's profit will be divided between the team.

Please contact me at [email protected] if you're interested

Good luck!

Chad

>I would have been better off just going for CompSci
Funny thing I'm on my 4th year of my webdev focused CompSci degree where we learnt Java, C#, HMTL, CSS, SQL, Javascript and PHP but all of it was only basics. Every single one of the courses was more like an introduction to programming course. So after having done introduction to programming with Java and grasped the basic idea behind it I wasn't too happy to be taught all that same shit again for a bunch of other languages with a different syntax like it was somehow an entirely different thing. Sure some of the retards in my class still didn't get it after having gone through the basics that many times.

I didn't learn shit about webdev and the things that employees actually are looking for in fresh graduates. When I look at job ads sometimes I don't even know what the shit is that they expect me to know and that's for entry level positions. Fucking waste of a degree and I'm supposed to find motivation to do my thesis and actually graduate.

It did help me realize that I don't want to be anywhere near webdev in the future though.

>Networking is very very important in this business IMO, wouldn't you say so?
Absolutely, but that's not really something you need to be in a degree program to be able to do.

Network by participating in dev communities, interacting with other devs on social media, participating in game jams and going to meet-ups like GDC or any of those sorts of things.

Plus I would argue that, assuming you don't already have an established skill-set suited for gamedev, you'd be better off pursuing a degree for the specific discipline that most interests you.

>Don't you think university helped you out with that?
To some extent yes, my experience working with small teams to make a handful of games (albeit shitty and relatively basic) is something I found valuable, but compared to having the credentials of a "real" degree I don't think it will help as much in the long-term.

At the end of the day though if it's something you're committed to that will really help you then I'm not gonna stop you. Just figured I'd offer my experience as someone more or less going the same route and nearly on the other side.
>>
>>146332348
webdev is such a weird kind of temptation for me. I know that I could easily handle the "difficulty" of the coding involved, but I also know that the actual "difficulty" is going to be in getting 50,000 shitty libraries by shitty people to somehow work together, and probably spend most of my time trying to figure out how to get version x of A to work with version y of B, that kind of bullshit.

In the end it's just not really worth it.

Yeah that was pretty much my exact experience in the two programming courses they had us take early on as part of the degree. Admittedly I messed around with some programming prior to them (mostly just bare-bones tutorials), but it was still enough to where neither of those classes felt challenging at all and whenever another student came to me for help they'd think I was some kind of super genius for knowing what an if statement was.

As for the rest of what you said, that's a real shame and as someone in the same kind of predicament (with the game dev degree instead) I totally sympathize.

Ideally I want to strike it out as indie so the type of piece of paper I have won't matter much unless I'm forced to shack up with a real studio, but it still sucks to feel as though I've wasted time and loads of money for almost nothing.

I started a (masters of science) Game dev degree. It quickly became obvious that shit was too slow.
I'm now 2 years ahead of them excluding two math courses.

It's not that I think they wouldn't learn what I wanted to learn. I really liked the corriculum. It wasn't a unitydev degree it was a make your own engine/software degree leaning towards CS rather than software engineering. It was good stuff. But it was just far too slow and there were some irrelevant courses.

Self study is superior.

I've been inspired by the presidential election to create a game where you run for, and hold public office.

The gameplay is split into two parts, running for office (giving speeches, managing issues, debating), and holding office (enacting policies, gerrymandering, fundraising, ect.)

The only problem is, I don't have a name for it.

It would be quite easy in, say, Lua. C#, too, although you'd have to get the value of the choice through an "out" parameter in the constructor of the yielded dialogue object or something (or use the horribly undocumented custom awaiter feature with async/await, also it's not available in Unity).

Honestly (and maybe I'm just being pessimistic) it's the same or a similar enough case for most other platforms you could get on.

Hell look at Steam, it's a total shit show with all the stuff that gets through Greenlight.

It's not *impossible* to make it or at least just get by, but it's so much harder than it would have been a handful of years ago purely because of the volume of games being released by everyone everywhere.

I'll actually give you a serious answer because I have nothing better to do.

During communism that lasted up until 1989 our television broadcasting was done in black and white, we simply didn't have any infrastructure.

And then CAPITALISM happened. A genius romanian born hungarian decided that it was time to move from copper to fiber. So he invested a shitload of money to lay out fiber to all the big cities. He made a shitload of money off of it. Having a market share of like 80% or something for internet and 60% on television. He charged fuck all for it I pay 52 lei for this which is roughly around $13 a month.

He cucked every major internet provider in the country. He gave them a shitty offer like "become part of my company or I'll take every single customer you have by giving them discounts" so he became big very very fast because he was providing a better service.

And the country is fairly small so laying out fiber wasn't that expensive. Now he's building data centers all over Europe so we have a good connection everywhere.
For example I get 800down from London and 200up

Sure Steam is full of worthless shit these days but you can still make actual good games that will take you a long way if you manage to get some exposure for your game. And also the fact that you can actually sell games instead of making them freemium meaning you only have to ship in the tens of thousands to make a profit.

Not the asker but,

I'm new to C++ and programming and I was asking about implementing something similar for my monsters. Are you supposed to just call erase()? Do you need anything special in the object destructor? Is it better to use a vector for something like this if you have derived classes or is there some other structure I should look into?

I'm sure that all sounds fucking stupid but I'd rather look like a retard and learn something than sit around all day wishing I wasn't a total shitter.
>>
>>146336969
Most movie theatres are part of big chains like CinemaCity is the biggest and they're the only ones that actually have IMAX.

But yeah I'd imagine some of these theatres would be great to do that in.

>>146336949

>>146336969
They can't really stop people from pirating, so targeting the largest pirate community and giving them first chance to see it gives them the advantage there. Someone somewhere is always going to do a rip, so might as well make money where they can.
>>
>>146337116
>Do you need anything special in the object destructor?
If the container contains "owning" raw pointers, you also have to call delete on the element. Otherwise, RAII will come into play and it will be destructed automatically.

A very good rule of thumb for beginners (and safe C++ programming in general) is to never call new or delete. Always use smart pointers if you need pointers with ownership. Raw pointers should be reserved for the rare cases where you want null references.
>>
>>146337261

it makes sense if it's an offline game too. If you make more money off of gog sales than you lose off of pirating, then in makes sense. In general adopting as many distribution platforms as possible makes the most sense - what you gain from the extra visibility will probably make up for anything you'd lose for piracy. You will NEVER put out a game and not have a cracked version online (unless nobody is playing it in the first place).
Increase your distribution platforms rather than trying to maintain the purity of your game or whatever.

But I don't know anything about Unity at all, so it would be pretty tough to re-create the maze generator I've got going here, with random paths, locked doors, etc.

partially 70mm, the parts that were shot in 35mm instead were pretty obvious because they were blurry as fuck, which was pretty much everything on earth

I'd compare 4k digital to 35mm at best

Have you tried the profiler yet?

Glancing at the tutorial, it could be iterating over every triangle in every cell every Update(), even if nothing changed.
>>
>>146344239
Looks like you have a script that creates a bunch of tris to represent a hex grid. From a quick look I can't tell why it would run so bad though.

>Unity
It's the one engine that's worse than GameMaker.
UE4 is the only way to make 3D games.
>>
As a beginner with a Lynda subscription is it reasonable to start gamedev with Unreal Engine 4?
>>
>>146344821
I have no idea what that is.
>>
>>146344985
?
>>
>>146344996
Do you want to make 3D games?
If yes, use UE4.
If no, too bad, make a 3D game in UE4.
>>
>>146345102
this isn't d2g
>>
>>146345008
In the menus, Window -> Profiler. When you run, it tracks how long each function takes
>>
>>146344762
Perhaps, but you're really going against the grain doing 3D in game maker...
>>
>>146345102
Unity is a terrible engine, it's not something that should be recommended to anyone for any game.
>>
>>146345239
?
>>
>>146345239
where's your game?
>>
>>146344996
not if you're not already fairly competent with C++
>>
>>146345223
Yeah its looking that way. Ive been using GM for over a decade in 2D, but had no idea just how limited 3D was.

I'm fucking tired of this progressman meme

HURR POST A DEMO OR I'LL HIT YOU fucking attention whore, I don't see you posting anything productive other than polluting the thread. fuck demoday

>>
>>146345581
then you should either learn how to code or use game maker, but don't expect to be making anything of value in unreal in the next 5 years

So is it forward of me to simply ask if there's any programmers looking to collaborate on these threads?

I can do decent sprite art when tasked, and I like to design and write, but I'm pretty shit when it comes to coding. Believe me, I've tried.

your best bet is to find someone who posts gameplay you find interesting but with placeholder art, and ask if they want you to make it

>>146346454
We have space jam coming up with a new attempt at organizing random collabs. In addition to finding someone in the thread, you could check into this if it possibly interests you. The Space Jam is 2 weeks so it's not a huge commitment, but could be a fun little project.

Looks like it had something to do with the physics of some objects I created. I discarded the physics and they ran much better.

Is there a way to disable Unity doing physics stuff and just let it handle the lighting, camera, etc?
>>
>>146312328
Create Event:
vsp = 0;

Step Event:
var grounded = place_meeting(x, y+1, obj_solid);
if (!grounded) vsp = min(vsp + 1, 16);
else if (keyboard_check(vk_space)) vsp = -7;

repeat abs(vsp) {
if (place_meeting(x, y + sign(vsp), obj_solid)) { vsp = 0; break; }
y += sign(vsp);
}

done, fool

quick question. Do you plan to make it so that you have to rotate through each shape to reach the one you want? Like. If you want the circle, do you have to go from square to rectangle to circle? if that makes any sense
>>
>>146348293
I played the demo
I think Q W E correspond to circle, square, rectangle
>>
>>146347184
Rigidbodies are the component in Unity that handles the physics of an object. If you don't use them you shouldn't have to deal with the physics. You can also freeze rotation and position axises on the Rigidbodies which helps control them and you can for example freeze all rotation and movement on an object when you know it doesn't need to change but still have the option to unfreeze it if you need it to move.

Played through Mighty No. 9 today, and it was such a disappointing experience knowing the amount of time and money that went into that it's inspired me and the programmer to spend a month knocking it off.
