How exactly does Potential -10 work? How much damage and Defense am I losing? Is it gradual over health loss, or is there an exact point where my stats dive? Is it worth getting rid of Guard to remove it?

The long and short of it is that if you're getting your ass kicked, it makes it easier for you to get your ass kicked.

Heat gauge.

Every GL attack is overall nerfed, but shelling now increases heat. Depending at what heat level you are, your attacks can get buffed and at max level your attacks are stronger than ever. But if you overheat your weapon, you are locked at minimum heat level for a certain time, so the weapon is super technical now. Many people are whining at the changes, but I think it's an interesting answer to how to make both pokes and shelling relevant in battle.

You do know all your complaints about graphics are only applied to a N3DS right? The O3DS versions of both 4G and X are identical in terms of graphics and FPS. X admittedly only ups the graphics and FPS by a small amount when using a N3DS, but this is absolutely irrelevant for O3DS users.

I would imagine it has to do with the fact that MHX is a 1.8Gb game, while MH4U is a 4.0Gb game. Capcom massively cut down on the assets and such so that they could ship the game on the much cheaper 2Gb carts instead.

No, I get exactly what you mean. I love using GS, Ham, GL, HBG, and some Bow. I love the impact of the weapons, especially staggering a monster with GS.

Tried branching out to SA, CB, LS, and SnS. Didn't like them because I couldn't groove with them or feel any oomph. Likewise with Lance.

I wish I liked them more, but they just "feel" weak, no matter how strong they are.

Does a game running at a higher framerate make it feel slower, despite being smoother? After going back to 4U from playing X for awhile, the weapons I usually use, lance and SnS, feel like they attack slower than they do in X but I'm pretty sure their attack speed should be the same.

I haven't really lanced in a long time, but most of Lance's DPS comes from non-stop poking and dodging. Countering is fun and all, but there's no guarantee the monster will target you while you're playing online. The actual charge move will annoy your teammates if you run into them, but it helps close the distance. I would never really use it for damage.

Then use pierce shot. Generally pierce 1 or 2 depending on the size, and 3 is for huge monsters like Jhen. Also evade extender helps a lot. Like a lot. It's almost mandatory to have.

Pellet shots are generally for trash monsters and annoying people online. Normal is for straight up damage. You'll be using these a lot. Pierce 2 will be a huge source of DPS. You want to fire pierce shots at a position where all the things will hit. Generally, this means hitting most monsters right in the head so it travels down to their tail. Pierce 3 is for huge monsters. Once you're out of pierce shots and you've combined all the materials for more pierce shots, move onto normal shots or other ones.

Also you'll want to look into seeing which weapons can use what ammo and how much capacity they have. Also deviation and other things. It all sounds complicated at first but it's pretty brainless. Also avoid pellet shot like the plague unless you're bored.

About one or two rolls away from the monster with normal evasion distance should be good. Also normals can be shot at a monster's face with no penalty as far as I remember as there is no critical distance for them. But generally you won't be using them for large monsters unless you ran out of pierce and the mats or the monster has poor hitbox lines.

You can tell by the hitspark.
It'll be bright white/yellow in a cross shape for critical.
Yellow/orange horizontal line when outside of critical.
A pathetic little red dot when you're too fucking far.

Pierce shots produce a sort of sonic boom looking effect once they enter critical range.

Normal rounds have no close-range penalty and can be fired point-blank if necessary.

So I'm having trouble figuring out the different bow type-shots. I know keeping the bow at Lv2 will fire normal shots, but Lv3 will trigger the Arc Shot. But how do I use the Power Shot? I know it says to press A right after loosing an arrow, but I'm not sure what the timing is.

Super early game, get Shot Type Up or Attack Up. The latter might be even better considering your raw isn't so great and the percentage boost from the former might be less interesting than the pure raw points of Attack Up.

Be super aggressive in expanding the Wycoon trades (specifically the Pokke Village Farm) from the start since the residual loot from the plant trades is Bumblebumpkin, which you can use to make a mid-to-later Low Rank Focus set with Combination Up and such, which is super useful for starters.

To a degree yes, but it's also about knowing your weapon. Tomahawk is a sword and shield right? SnS is actually one of the best weapons for constantly attacking monsters, in fact that's its main strength but also what makes it a less suitable weapon for newer players despite the games telling you it's for beginners. When you roll you have a few (6 by default, 10 with evasion+, 12 with evasion+2) invincibility frames, though those aren't always relevant and you shouldn't rely on them unless you have evasion+. More importantly all your attacks except the combo shieldbash+slice (which you should skip by pressing a instead of x at that point if possible) are a single fast animation and you can roll after any of them, so you can roll to reposition at any time. If you aren't going to be able to iframe or get out of the way of an incoming attack you can usually hold r to block it when your current attack animation ends, which is USUALLY (not always, because you can be guardlocked by a combo) safe. Most third-gen monsters (giggi is one of these) telegraph their moves pretty well, so you don't actually need to know their patterns if you pay close attention to how they're moving.

But the last and most important piece of advice I can give you is to learn to love SnS's bread and butter move. Most people don't realise this when they first start using SnS but x+a launches you forward over a short distance at great speed and is great for closing distances when monsters reposition after an attack, allowing you to stay on the offencive instead of chasing them around. It also gives you a couple of seconds of poise (wind resistance + resistance to being tripped by other players), which is often useful solo and insufficient if your team sucks but still helpful online.
