The song list does appeal to me quite a bit, and while the number of songs is smaller than in the other games they cut out most of the fluff I didn't like (basically KAITO, MEIKO and Len songs) so I'm okay with it.

I would say the characters and story are interesting enough to carry the game.
I would also say the gameplay while not the deepest thing ever has enough going for it to be a solid system.

We don't get VNs because most westerners would rather play RPGs where you get the stories and dialogues of VNs but also gameplay.

I hope you realize the entire point of Atelier is the laid-back feeling of the adventure and the open-ended structure of the games. It's the complete opposite of Neptunia in that regard.

Basically, Atelier is for people who would rather drink some whiskey, sit back and enjoy five hours of cute girls in a rather unimportant but nonetheless charming adventure with sound gameplay design and good music before going to bed and Nep is for autistic NEETs.

All Atelier games have more to the characters than just that, you just need to progress properly in the game to see it.

And I'm sure he wasn't talking about a game being bad from a technical perspective, but from a design standpoint. NoA is a terribly designed action RPG. AT3 is also terribly designed. Neptunia's mechanics and balance are so shit I wonder why people bother with the games.

EDF isn't borked from a mechanical standpoint, and it's a simple idea that works.
