It's very rough around the edges but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Combat can get repetitive, though it opens up a little as the game progresses since you get tochkas (more powers like projectiles and bombs basically). Even then you'll need a tolerance for repetition though. Some of the bosses are great but it does help that I enjoy endurance-bosses that last a long time.

The core gameplay works on a gigacal system that rewards longer time spent within a level but puts you at higher risk the more time you spend within a level for a neat risk/reward system, but some people aren't huge fans of this and felt it was just another meter to deal with.

The story is really neat. It's very much NIS style humour and writing but it's considerably darker than Disgaea - death, rape and torture are all parts of the story in various ways. I enjoyed the cast and setting a ton and Metallia made for a very interesting main story character because she isn't a "hero" at all and is a pretty awful person sometimes. Personally she's one of my favourite characters ever because of that and how they expanded on it.

The PS4 version adds an extra dungeon, with its own little story, as well as some quality of life improvements like multiple weapon line equipping (so less having to go into menus to change weapons) so is definitely the preferable version.

It lasts a good while and it's an entertaining ride, but because the mechanics can be obtuse, combat can be repetitive, and some people don't like the story (I've seen people legitimately angry at Metallia for some of the stuff she does), I will say your mileage may vary significantly

There's a demo, which is basically the tutortial/prologue and Chapter 1-1. Give it a try.

It's great. It falls into a lot of the trappings of new IPs - balance issues with mechanics causing some to be more useful than others, a strong gameplay concept that could do with more depth, and being pretty short, but there's a lot to love about it too.

The gameplay is heavily about mobility, which is extremely satisfying because of your free form movement in 3D. The combat builds on this and is mostly about your positioning relative to your enemies but in practice the combat can suffer due to the gravity kick often being the best move in the majority of situations. You absolutely can play a bit more stylishly, switching between various different attacks like slide kicks, gravity kicks and ground combos, but the game doesn't reward that.

The setting is fucking gorgeous and neat as hell from a gameplay perspective because of its verticality, and the story and characters are entertaining, but the game suffers from "ends as soon as it starts" where the story ends just as all the characters and concepts are laid out and questions about it start being asked, leaving it with a lot of loose ends.

Visually it's pretty great, Remastered does a good job of improving textures, and 60fps is massively appreciated. It's not going to take down the likes of Uncharted 4 or anything visually but it looks nice. Pic related and the atmosphere is fantastic.

Personally it's one of my favourite games of all time but that's in part because it appeals so directly to me - free form 3D movement in an open world with vertical architecture, a gorgeous fantasy-sci-fi setting, fun characters and music by one of my favourite OST composers etc. But since it's available pretty cheap which mitigates some of the issues like how short it is, I think it's absolutely worth picking up for anyone.

So I have a question for all of you ps4 owners. I am extremely excited for Nier Automata, Death stranding and the from software games. I can afford the console but not the games the only game I've payed for is overwatch 60 dollars cad and all the games on my 3ds I got through the homebrew system. I'm 100% digital. I've always hated having to keep physical games and this is the first generation I've really been able to completely abandon them. I hate keeping discs with dumb plastic boxes. Took me about 80 hours to get the plat in rorona+ with grinding being one of the most punishing things you could ever do in an atelier game. Post game bosses still required you to fully understand game mechanics and actually prepare for them instead of bruteforcing your way through it through sheer autism like for most other plats.

That's pretty much the only two tedious trophies in the game. Also speed is probably the best combat stat since it increases the amount of hits you get for your basic attack command. My placenta hit like 6-7 times with the windia modification and dealt like 900-1600 damage per turn.
