Oddly, in the FIRST incarnation of this game, someone was playing the Fenrisian brawler, and THEY grabbed the shortbow.

She could transition into ranged if she wants to, I suppose. She seems pretty set on her naginata, though. I don't mind, there are many times of rogue or ninja.

Renya's final plan is to ALSO get a naginata, burn a seal into his palm and the counterseal onto the haft of the weapon, and basically use it like Mjolnir. Hence why he hit Tenten up for Sealing tutoring lessons.

I guess it depends on the playstyle one prefers. I, for instance, would keep a character like this at range, with a shortbow or light crossbow, which could be empowered with Lightning or Wind (if said character had those chakra natures, additionaly I would work some simple tricks and abilities involving those to be able to get a high ground). In case of the hand to hand combat a naginata, wakizashi or ninja-to would work, but mostly to eliminate enemies which occupy my chosen sniping spot.

Actually, this time I forgot to put a shortbow up for grabs in the warehouse, I think, so it could be my fault nobody grabbed it. By the same token, nobody asked Tenten for one when they visited her store either, so I dunno. A shortbow would also REALLY suit Arata, honestly, since he could tip his arrows and bolts with his various toxins.

Waniko is also Water Release. Alongside Fugetsu as part of his Boil Release. And also alongside Arata. We have no Earth Release users or Lightning Release Users.

A stealthy-close combat fighter would work - a lot of GMs don't make players roll for a stealth kill if the player got behind the person without getting seen, because it's hard to defend against a knife suddenly appearing in your throat. Waniko will mostly be - as I understand it - a glass cannon sort of character. Through the Shadows Softly will allow her to relocate where and when she is needed, allowing her to help her teammates no matter how far apart they may be, and Amegakure Diplomacy means that if she only makes one attack on the enemy before relocating again, it'll be a telling blow.

Anyone can spit fire, apparently anything cen generate lightning somehow and if there's no air around to manipulate, chances are you have bigger things to worry about.

I honestly think that the whole elemental thing was flawed from the start. It would really be a lot better if the elements were used as enchancements for weapons and maybe some mobility techinques only (like we have seen Asuma using them). The main problem is that it was retconned like three times. The first time, Zabuza, a Jounin from the Hidden Mist and in Kakashi's Bingo Book, is amazed that Kakashi can use a Lightning Release technique like Chidori, even though it's simply a single-elemental Nature Transformation. Then it was changed that, no, each person only has a discrete number of Releases they can learn. Then it was changed that, no anyone can learn all of them if they try, they just have an affinity to one or the other, which means that Zabuza should've been even LESS impressed that he could use Lightning Release. Like, there's no difference between Kakashi's Lightning Release: Chidori and Sasuke's Fire Release: Grand Fireball Jutsu that he used back in like Chapter 4. Which is ANOTHER thing - it's never explained what limitations there are on putting Nature Transformations into techniques. If Sasuke went through the rubber ball training, could he have created a Raiton Rasengan, or Katon Rasengan? Could literally any elemental-less technique have any Nature Transformation applied to it?

Kishimoto just made things up on the spot and didn't bother trying to explain the retcons or changes.

I think there IS a certain limit to what jutsu natures can be attached to. Chidori, for example is just chakra, and Raikiri is the lightning nature variant.

Kishi, I honestly couldn't tell you.

In his mind Naruto and Sauce have a relationship like brothers, and that's a very close, situational competition.
The real trouble is that he is incapable of portraying a bond like that right, so it comes out all wrong.

Case in point, if again returning to Trek: by the end of DS9, O'Brien and Dr Bashir were fucking great bros. They've been through a lot of shit together, spent time together in sports and on the holodeck, chased down critical informtion in a rouge agent's mindscape as he was dying. Time and time again we've seen how well they got on, how much one learned from the other.

So when it came to a scene where O'Brien says he LOVES Keiko but actually kind of LIKES Bashir more, and the same goes for Bashir loving Ezri, I can buy that and there's nothing really weird about that. if anything it enhances how romantic love is something entirely different from friendship.

Kishi would probably try to go for something like that if asked, and utterly, utterly fuck it up.

Your point about the shit they've gone through together and their character building is the key for me. One mission and then the forest of death really didn't convince me of the team 7/naruto and sauce bonding all that much. It seemed like a good start but honestly it didn't come anywhere near justifying all the shit that came after it.

Kishi has an awful tendency to tell instead of show, with fucking long drawn out speeches about this and that. but to an audience, events and actions that justify those speeches work much better than words. IRL as well, people can say whatever the fuck they want but it can't really be believed until they put their money where their mouth is and do something to prove it.

This is a problem that Anime in general tends to fall into, probably because of how the medium is motivated by cheapness of production. it's much cheaper and faster to have characters say how they feel and animate some flapping mouths than actually show it in movement or action.

The difference is that good anime written by non-autists can do this well and Kishi couldn't.

While I agree that it was shit reasoning I do believe that Kishi made that his genuine reasoning/motivation at first.

If Itachi had been an insane guy who massacred his clan because he knew that their powers were too broken and could never be trusted and eventually they would all become insane and destroy their world, then I would have been down with it. Maybe adding that he hadn't seppuku'd himself because there were a couple more Uchiha left to kill (Sauce was spared because Itachi knew he had the potential to be stronger than and therefore could be used as a pawn to kill Madara).

While I don't dislike the coup reasoning, and it was definitely the best we could've hoped for from Kishi, I do think that the "he had a reason to do it" motivation could've been done better and in a more self-aware manner, seeing as how when you look at it objectively Uchihas are a curse on the naruto universe and deserved to be eliminated for having too many hax.

Average build, shoulder length hair, form-fitting but not skintight clothing, the shinobi flak jacket modified aesthetically, with the Uzushio whirl replaced with a red rose with thorns coming from it, to represent their affinity with plants, poisons and toxins. Nothing else beyond that.

It's largely up to Waniko's player, since Bink is the only half-decent artist in the group. We do need some more description from Joe about Arata though.

Bink is gonna do a Team 7-style picture with the team standing side by side, and he's gonna redo it over the course of the game - so if they lose a limb, it'll be represented in the update. Ditto for scars, or if Fugetsu gets the Meltsword, it'll show up in the picture, with the characters getting closer and more comfortable with each other over time.

Eh, that sentiment could have come from a whole bunch of different places. The Third, or Jiraiya (who clearly valued his companions, enough to go after Orochimaru and try to redeem him) and from him to Minato and Kakashi.
It was arranged ao that yes, Obito did sort of have an impact, but a good story that does not make.

We haven't seen the guy, besides on a photo, until the short story about Kakashi, there were no genuine interactions until just before the War (one instance of everyone jobbing to Tobi did fuck all, the other time he just told the Itachi story to Naruto, for reasons I don't recall).

There are many types of effective villains, many unique cases of good interaction and Obito simply isn't one. Too much about him relies on retroactive additions, his ability is shit AND goes against established lore, and the least thing this story needed was more Uchiha faggotry.

I wouldn't. I always feel as if people miss the entire fucking point of Obito whenever they comment on trying to make Obito's motivation more "justified." A fall into darkness story for a villain does not work, if your villain is actually right.

And just piling more sob into a villain's story is the laziest way to create an antagonist ever. You can do that too, but just saying the Scotty McEvil was molested as a kid doesn't make him a better character.

I certainly wouldn't add anything about him legit wanting to make the shinobi world a better place. That was Nagato's schtick, and it still makes no sense that he let a 15 year old talk him out of his ideals. Talk no Jutsu worked on Obito because he hated himself for what he had become, with everything beyond "muh rin" being complete bullshit.

Thing is, the story is not about Kakashi, but (only supposedly, thanks to Kishi's shit writing) Naruto. I get what you are going for with your post, but however you put it, that real connection with Naruto is always a non-direct, secondary one.

For him to be an effective villain, you need something Obito did that directly, in the now, connects Naruto. The 'I was the one who killed your father!' addition was supposed to connect that, but it never went anywhere, and a real connection should have happened in some better way.

As is, Sauce is a far more central a point for the plots that go on in the series.

And for fun, let's compare an 'I want to fix the world' villain that's a botched work like Obito to one pulled off correctly: Kreia from KotOR2.

The PC is hunted by her apprentices, she uses you to rid the Galaxy of the remaining Jedi, her teachings are what manipulate Atris to leak the info that lets Darth Nihilius wipe most of the Jedi out , all of which deeply connects to the situation of the player in the beginning. She sees her own redemption, as well as a hope for her greatest student in you, and becomes the actual villain in order to test you. Your severed connection to the Force, which she sees as a blight upon the Galaxy is what motivates her, what gives her hope for independence from it, even if in the end she is merely lying to herself about it.

She is gloriously grey, insane, wise and obsessed with the PC, her lessons to you are amazing world building and internal criticism/study of the ethics of the Force and the ethics of Star Wars.
There is conflict and connection throughout the story with her, making her an incredibly effective villain.

Of course she also massively differs from Obito: she wishes to rip away the mystical bullshit controlling people's lives so they can live on their own, he wants to envelop everyone in it with sweet dreams.
Plus Kreia is written competently.
