Do you have a question about a Japanese visual novel or a translation of it?

Depends on how noticeable it is. Of course I'm not an artist so I probably notice it less than some people do.

Paint tool sai for simplicity, can be illegally downloaded literally from places like deviantart, but you could have an issue setting up the transparency thing - otherwise photoshop, which again just go and pirate.

Yep, piracy alright. Even buyfags have their limits.

>>145370802
sai is really that good? I used it a bit years ago but thought it was just a cheap alternative tool

>>
>>145371138
I don't think I've ever met an independent artist who has legally bought photoshop or entered into the new monthly CC one. It's a little disheartening that it's such a big paywall. The monthly $10 is a step in the right direction as opposed to the $700 or some shit I suppose.
>>145371415
Sai is pretty good if you're simply looking to draw, color and line, it lacks all the fancy filters and plugins photoshop has which is why it's arguably worse to some people.

Not the person who originally asked but that tool never works for me. Yesterday I tried searching the image of some guy with super sharp muscles posted here and I got matches for some loli girl (to be fair, similar hair colour) spreading her rather chunky thighs and I think maybe her vagina was showing? Not sure.

The text Google pasted on it was "anime character". I think it guesses what term fits or something.

The other tool didn't work, nor did Tineye. Is there some way to make it work? It just never ever gets a result, not even when I try stuff that I already know the source of on purpose to see if it's just broken.
>>
>>145374729
Sometimes it doesn't work, and then "it can't be helped" and you have to ask for sauce. But always trying as a first option is better in case it works (as does in this particular situation).
>>
>>145375078
Yeah, I did try it with the OP image and it worked. I wonder how "obscure" does one image need to be for it to not work, I'm fairly sure I've searched a lot of stuff in the past and it didn't work.

It's going good personally, got quite a few scripts done recently. I'm just trying to tweak my characters atm, been messing with colors today for when I get the character redrawn. Just having trouble choosing which I like more.

How's yours, if you're doing one?
>>
>>145380634
On the good side, I'm going through sprite drawing fundamentals faster than I expected. On the bad, can't seem to find the motivation to write more than a few words every day. The current script takes about 9 hours to read, but there is still a fuckton more to do. Hopefully I'll get my shit together during the summer.
>>
>>145381412
I'm with you on the bad, as good as it has been past week, it's slowly came to a stall where I'm doing less and less. Hopefully I can pick the pace back up. Took me ages to get started though, had to change the whole plan around.

My progress is quite small compared to your 9 hours, I only began taking it seriously rather recently. In terms of sprites I'm not close to those yet, focusing on concept before I do actual sprite work, which is good since I'm changing two major characters around.

what's /evn/'s opinion on varying character heights? if I'm using all my vertical space for characters like the OP pic, should my tallest characters be scrapping the top of the screen, or should I homogenize the heights to let everyone take up most of the view?

and if I'm in a fantasy setting with crazy height disparities, should I just shrink my portraits in general, or cut off the really tall characters and/or have them sit/crouch?

I'm tinkering with sizes and think it's mostly just a preference thing, but second opinions are always nice
>>
>>145401725
fantasy height variation - try to keep it within reasonable bounds so that your dwarf is noticeably shorter than your orc but neither's head goes offscreen? If you're using floating text boxes you have some extra room to negotiate with for dialog, too. Or you could pan the camera down a bit when the shortass is talking.
>>
>>145401725
An artist should be able to visualise height by using the body and pose to their advantage, so you should probably aim for roughly the same sized sprites for each character (unless you put some chibi shit in their which is obviously smaller and less serious). Having a really tall sprite and a short sprite is going to be really jarring.
>>
>>145401984
Also ignore the wrong use of 'there', i'm tired.
>>
>>145401725
I don't like it when sprites are touching the top of the screen, so in that case I'd prefer homogenized heights.
But I like different heights when that would be the tallest and not the average height. I think it works well, especially with mixed gender casts and makes small characters look cuter.
>>
File: height.jpg (52KB, 470x243px) Image search: [Google]
height.jpg
52KB, 470x243px
>>145401725
IMO you don't have to make sprite art accurate to their true heights. As long as people can tell X is tall and Y is shorter is fine.
>>
>>145401971
the camera pan is an interesting idea, but you're probably right about reasonable bounds

>>145401984
same to you
this setting is something that wasn't planned as a VN, so I might need to make some concessions with the really tall dudes, because otherwise the disparity between a child character and a 12 foot tall hulk would be hard to manage, I'll try to shrink them down under 8 or 7 even

thanks for the input, I'll post sketches of the outliers tomorrow hopefully when I get to resize them properly
>>
>>145402498
yeah, I'm trying to leave a good 50 pixels between anything and the top, it annoys me too
I want to preserve the size differences as well, as I have characters of both sexes and several ages and builds

>>145402805
huh, I hadn't thought of increasing heights like that pic, I was just shortening them
I could probably just move everyone's height a percentage towards the average in a calculator to keep everything consistent when my ocd makes me do math drawing

thanks

It's fine to use bigger or taller sprites, just don't make them a huge difference. You should use the body, pose and camera to convey how big or small they are. I am using this as a very quick example, but do you see what I mean? It's obviously one is tall and one is short. You can apply child body and use the camera viewpoint to show a child compared to an adult for example whilst still showing the same sized sprite with the same amount of detail.

>>145402805
What they said.
>>
>>145403869
I guess I should point out one of the bigger aspects you might not initially pick up on, the shortstack's clothing and face appear more zoomed in, whilst the taller more slender one is somewhat zoomed out. It creates the illusion that one is short and one is tall.
>>
>>145398875
Not soon enough.
>>
>>145403869
>>145404481
that's an interesting way to do it, but wouldn't that look odd in direct interaction? they're seperated into 2 windows there, so the zoom looks alright, but if they were directly facing each other, I'd imagine it could look odd

I may still test it later with some of the outliers though if I can't find space, thanks for the advice

either way, I mainly just need to shrink my sketches a good deal before I detail work them, because I have average height characters taking up nearly 70-80% of the screen height, which I can shrink a bit to fit the tall dudes into the 70-90 range

I've never drawn for a VN before, so it's something I just have to toy with to get a feel for I guess
>>
>>145405186
As I say it's a very quick example. Keep in mind you are showing the character to the viewer as if they were on their height level. This is something the majority of VN's do, for children and adults.

As I say, some size difference is fine but try to keep them mostly around the same size, absolutely do not have a really tall and a really small sprite.

oh, my bad, I don't think I mentioned that I'm sketching for a side view type, where the protagonist is a visible character looking at another, kind of like a Fire Emblem game, I know some VNs do this but this is what I was emulating most

I haven't really been thinking about eye level as a result, do you think it would still be important even in this sort of setup? I'm honestly not sure
>>
>>145406049
Only if it's on third person.
>>
>>145406571
Oh, you can still use the same technique there. Just remember I'm not saying no to a size difference just a no to what you had in mind before. You'll see most of those sprites have the heads around the same level. You can also see the taller guy doesn't just look taller, he looks like he could be someone who looms over the others, notice how he is partially zoomed in and his body big and muscular - it's showing you more than tallness, but if you're focusing tall, the blue haired guy compared to the others is a good reference.

You won't always get it right, nobody will, and you can do it many ways to be honest, but it's a good standard to keep in mind.
>>
>>145407151
Don't you want to see weird anime faces looming over you as you lie in bed?
>>
>>145407407
yeah, that makes sense, I think I'm just confusing myself, cuz now that I look at it Fire Emblem deals with all these issues really well
I was making a big deal over size disparity, but the blue haired guy is average height and the big guy is almost double the size of the others there, but they're already using the tricks you and others have mentioned in that pic

it'll make more sense when I get home and do it instead of over analyzing it I'm sure, thanks man
>>
>>145407953
Hey man we all struggle with something initially, just do some rough sketches and play with different things till you feel confident about it. At the very least you can always post it here and someone will tell you if it looks wrong to them or not. The fact you've picked up on how those sizes are handled means you're already half way there.

PyTom said this is misleading, iirc.

Depending on how much or how little they implement, you could still be far better off just writing in Unity to begin with if that's where you want to be.

Although, didn't Unity just do a massive change to its pricing structure?
>>
>>145410224
So which is a better program to use for scripting then? VN Toolkit or Ren'Py? For Unity compatibility, that is.
>>
>>145410224

I think it makes sense for SP, considering that they handle a lot of ports and evns.
>>
>>145413562
It's useful for them, yeah, but if you're starting a game from scratch now and unity is your target, it might make sense to work with it from the beginning.
>>

Well, it's a SP project and there's no indication of whether they are making it public.

I think the article is misleading since it makes it seems like it will be a thing open for all devs.

Personally I like it when there's a large size difference between sprites and it really gives me a proper feel for the height and scale of each. Negatives being: fewer artists use it, so there are fewer tutorials/premade assets. Some learning curve. You will want to watch some videos on Youtube to figure out what it can do/how to do what you want to do that it does differently than some other programs.

Okay, need some advice from /evn/ here because I'm going a little crazy

>join new team as a first time teamwork newb
>new team doesn't have a leader but all four of them have to agree on an idea in order for it to pass
>takes days for us to agree on something together
>at this rate I just be a yes man just so we can get shit done
>artist bounces
>new artist gets hired
>writer bounces
>new writer gets hired
>team is still a mess
>trying hard to salvage and at the very least, get this game done

like what is the issue here? My guess is it's because we're a very slow democracy, rather than one leader directing us towards a singular goal. Also, it feels like artists and writers just disappear unless they're physically hired and working for a paying wage at a game company.
>>
>>145493124
Teams need a leader, it doesn't matter what kinda team it is, there is always someone who will direct. Leader can change, but there should always be one. You need to put "idea" through, or ask to get someone who will be able to direct and organise.
>>
>>145493124

>Treating game development like a democracy

There's your problem.
>>
>>145493881
>>145495110

>>
>>145496439
>How do you be a good leader and keep your workers satisfied?
Listen and respect the team. Ultimately you're taking the assertive position, which means getting things done. "Yeah, that's cool, but realistically we might not have time to do that, we should focus on THIS. We need to get this done for DATE so THIS can get done", etc.

Your problem seems to boil down to disorganised without people knowing what they should be doing or doing whatever they want. It's just not how good teamwork is.
>>
>>145496439

> keep workers satisfied

you pay them.
>>
>>145493124
Every group needs a leader. Fucking hell m8, even a democracy have a leader. Always asking the group before moving forward will not do the game any good. Man up (Even if you have a cunt) and tell the group that you guys need a leader.
>>
>>145496820
Is there anyway one could keep artists or writers from mysteriously abandoning the project? Or do I just pray that they'll stay from beginning to the end?
>>
>>145497780
only the artist and writers are being paid. I'm working for free. Not sure about the other two guys on the team. The game itself is freeware.
>>
>>145497854
Kidnapping, blackmail, enslavement, etc.
>>
>>145497854
You can't /keep/ them aboard, but you can keep them interested. Were the previous ones even given something specific to do? Were they getting feedback or having the other members get involved a little? If they are left to their own devices they will lose interest. At least with pay they have something to work for, but if they aren't getting appropriate attention why would they do it for free, right? Even getting a proofreader in who will give the writers feedback is a great idea.
>>
if everyone in a team is working for free to make a freeware game, does that automatically doom it to vaporware oblivion?
>>
>>145497854
well, the reasons people might leave are
1) The project just isn't interesting
2) it's going at a snails pace
3) your team is a mess, and they don't want to deal with that kind of nonsense
4) they're lazy pieces of shit who signed up for something more serious than they realized
Dealing with 1-3 is your job as a project leader anyway, and the way to avoid 4 is paying attention when picking who you want to join your team.

>I don't really know how to market that well besides putting my logo in my avatar and tweeting on twitter.
Literally Sekai's marketing plan. If you want more your game had better have lots of pretty girls in it.
>>
>>145507763
Again. There is literally no reason for you to sign with Sekai to 'get your name out there'. They will not help you with that.

Putting your logo in your avatar and tweeting? Is already more than they are likely to do for you.

You want the help of a publisher if you
a) are selling porn that can't be whitewashed enough to go on steam, because selling it by yourself on DLsite is not going to work
b) need funding, and are capable of convincing them to help fund your project

If all you want is help 'getting your game out there', you do not want a publisher. They will NEVER care about your game as much as you do. If your game flops, they're out nothing. If it succeeds, they get a share of all your profits, for free.

If they don't have skin in the game they are worthless to you.
>>
>>145493124
I'm currently doing commissions, but I have done collaborations in the past and the only way to get me interested (and to keep me there) would be to have a completed project to work on. I've seen too many groups never getting anywhere and there's no way I'd want to spend loads of hours of my time drawing for a project that is still developing.

It's one thing to give feedback here and there and ask the other team members when you're not sure but, ideally, I'd want a strong vision from the beginning.

'Story Rich' is a bullshit thing to say about a VN, I agree, because it IS a story.

Plot-heavy I can see being meaningful because a lot of VNs don't actually have much in the way of plots and are just using that setting/theme/premise as a backdrop. As a quick descriptor it seems potentially useful to me.
>>
>>145550070
It is used so much and so disingenuous that I think many people consider it an empty buzzword. I don't think it is bad per se. If you are writing Higurashi 2.0 and you don't want to spoil the "ordinary schoolife becomes murder-suicide horror mystery", I can understand how someone might include in in the blurb vague expressions like "more than meets the eye" and "plot-heavy".
However, I have seen people say that Katawa Shoujo has a very deep plot. Based on precedents like that, you tend not to take very seriously those who use that kind of self-descriptors. It has the same problem as using any other vague "buzzword". Bad writing, good pacing, poor character development... Those expressions are used as a quick way to convey an impression (which is good in a sense, becasue saturation of available entertainment results in a short attention span), but given their abstract nature it is pretty easy for different people to disagree on where and how to use them. Discussing specific aspects, however, tends to be less "problematic"(<= another good word ruined by overuse. SJW implications not intended).
>>
>>145552331
Haven't played Katawa Shoujo myself. It seems to be touted as "the best evn" by /r/visualnovels, but from what I've seen on the game (about half a playthrough), it was just meh...

...so I'm guessing you don't agree it has a "deep plot"?
>>
>>145552331
>It is used so much and so disingenuous that I think many people consider it an empty buzzword.
People using 'choices matter' triggers me by now because it seems like 90% of the time they're lying. Or at least, overstating to the point where it's not clear what they mean.

In a lot of choice-y games, your choices matter in that they affect some behind the scenes stats which will eventually, late in the game, cause the plot to branch or decide what ending you get. But until that point you're largely railroaded, which causes lot of confused frustration for players who thought they were being told they'd get to take direction over the story...

It has impressive length for an EVN, passable visuals (especially by the standards of when it first came out), a sufficient quantity of Feelings, and it was free and sufficiently well-popularised that most people know about it. With the flood of games released since then, it's now much more difficult for any one game to stand up and become THE GAME that everyone talks about.
>>
>>145553825
Look, Katawa Shoujo is very impessive for what it is. The premise and the setting are well constructed, but is a character driven VN, not something "plot-driven" like, dunno, Steins;Gate. That's what I meant.

That's fair enough. Wasn't really trying to grill anyone. Mostly, I just wanted opinions from other evn devs that people didn't have to feel socially bound to find good points if they didn't see any (because anon).

Like I said - I'd seen some gameplay and what I saw didn't impress me. And this was before the real English (translated and developed) explosion since it was several months before Hatoful Boyfriend had its official English release. Everything I've seen since then just solidified my disinclination to even bother playing to study the way I have some other popular evns that have come out that I otherwise wouldn't have bothered with.

Previous finished projects, not necessarily long ones but well done and interesting. Showing that the person who handles the project has an idea of how to manage time and money. A demo that demonstrates that the team put some of their own resources (it can be just time) in their project before they come and ask for dough.

And then I guess I'd prefer the sort of story that I like, with the sort of art that I like, but without the things I listed above I'll be wary even of stuff that looks like it's sort of my cup of tea.

Is there a rule of thumb for scaling and resolution for character art? >>145595216
>I have no idea how that guy keeps his company running
It's not a mystery, his games make money. He doesn't spend that much on making them, and he releases a number, and they make a steady income.

In this case, as I understand, he had art and writing in the pipeline for an eventual DLC because he thought the game would be a success.

When it became obvious that it wasn't, he let the art+writing he had already commissioned finish, but didn't bother coding up the extra gameplay modes that were going to be part of the DLC, and just released it as a freebie rather than try to sell it to people.
>>

The gameplay is fine, the art is ugly.

>>
>>145600628
How he makes money is such a mystery, what's more confusing is why people buy his shit.
>>
Clear
>>
>>145591138
It partly depends on your style and partly on the resolution the final game is going to be. I usually ask how big the window will be and tend to do double the size and then scale down.

If that's too big for you for any reason (say, too many layers make your PC lag), you can make your sprite a reasonable size and try and draw in the features of the face - if they're too pixellated at the size they're at, you probably want to go bigger.
>>
>>145601379
I don't see how either of these things is confusing. Far worse games than his still sell hundreds of copies.
>>
>>145604648
Arguably because he actually has a fanbase, and not people that buy the games ironically or because they don't know better.

Considering not a fucking one of the EVNs I've funded have released anything more than "better demos", I'm not funding anything EVN until at least one of them pays out. Them's the rules. Sorry other EVN makers who are actually competent.

Assuming I was "allowed" to fund one, I'm not even looking sideways at a project where most if not all of the people involved haven't completed a project of similar size before. Preferably, via a funding platform (Kickstarter; etc). Having a demo available is also imperative. I never play them, but I do look around various places to see the general impression of those who have. Funding page should detail all the usual things about where the money is going and what happens after the goal is met. Fulfillment dates should be reasonable for what they're planning. Tiers should be reasonably priced. If you're charging me premium prices and have a history of pricing your previous work at bargain bin prices, I'm going to skip out on the funding stage and wait for the first time you toss it into a bundle or on Steam for 2 bucks because you can't respect the punters enough to let them play the game for awhile before shitting on those who believed in your project by cutting the release price severely.

In other yuri evn news, Toko's getting some new patches soon.

>The first patch is free and updates the UI, all art up to 1440p, full body sprites, new animations and a couple new CGs for free

>Second patch is the VA patch which adds some 2000 lines of voice acting, for every character and narrator, this will be $4.99

He also tweeted about different ways to script the voices, which was interesting to read about. Looks like the VAs changed some lines to get them to read better.

Looks like this is the definitive edition of the game.

$10 if you bought it full price. Alot of people bought it at 50% off, so that's still $7.50. This is why evn don't do voice acting, because the amount of text requires alot of funds.

Seriously dost thou jest? I'm thinking of buying this game to see how a fully-voiced EVN sounds like and I'm digging the art design (not art style). Put I thought with the number of sprites, BGs and BGMs it would atleast last 5 hours.
>>
>>145661620
It said up to 1440p, so it could just be pick whatever standard res you want up to that. But yeah, if that's the case, then file bloat for people that don't want it.
>>
>>145661671
Depends on reading speed obviously, but it IS a very short KN.

I clocked under an hour to complete it, I'm a fast reader. JP lists it as "a little over an hour: an hour and a half if you take your time" although that might have been referring to the pre-steam version. Steam play lengths are confusing because people idle for cards, but MANY people complete it in under two hours.

It is nowhere near five hours long, not by a long shot.
>>
>>145661671
I read at an average rate and it took me 2 hours to get through the game. It will be somewhat longer voiced. It's basically a prologue.

Chapter 1's coming this year.

Sakura Spirit and Sakura Angels at least had some thought into them rather than Sakura [Genre]/[Setting]

Not that the name matters much beyond containing the word 'Sakura' at this point. It just hits home how soulless each title is now, being pumped out with the bare minimum of effort put into it besides the art. And even then, the art style is getting less complex in shading and style because of the workload being put on Wanaca and whoever else might be helping along
