First time running the Labyrinth. I found a Silver Key in the first area, but also what I presume is a Silver Door, only I can't get through it. Do all the keys and all the doors have their own discrete keys? i.e If I find another key will I have to come back to see if it fits that door?

Chaos KB Assassin and BA Elementalist are two of the most fun builds I've ever played and they are both cheap as chips to gear.

For the chaos wander all you need to transition is to roll flat chaos damage on an ilvl 83+ wand. Before that you can just level as phys KB with a couple of Twyzels.

And for the Burning Arrow build you just need a few cheap uniques like Lioneye's and Drillneck. You level as Firestorm until 53 then get an Infractem and switch to BA, then Lioneye's at 66.

There are Locked Doors which are opened by mechanics/puzzles around the door.
There are Silver Doors which are opened by Silver Keys.
There are Golden Doors which are opened by Golden Keys. These doors are also mandatory.

Templar and Witch have AoE clusters (15% each) so those have the easiest/earliest way to do AoE damage. End game pretty much everyone can do anything. Slayer (Duelist) gets conditional +40% AoE, Deadeye (Ranger) gets 20% AoE, Scion gets 10% AoE. Depends on your build, really

Ideally every class will be fucking up crowds since that's the goal. I recommend starting as duelist and running Earthquake. You can ascend into Slayer with lots of AoE, have access to the AoE passive nodes near the Templar start, and have lots of access to health nodes.

Look up LiftingNerdBro and ZiggyD in Youtube for beginner guides (even if they're years old, most principles and game mechanics still hold up today). ItsYoji also has useful stuff but aren't as beginner-focused. Also read up the Mechanics page in the PoE Wiki ( http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Mechanics ) and keep the wiki open while you play, and everytime something shows up that you don't fully understand, search for it.

As to what build to use, easy cookie-cutter builds nowadays are Firestorm for a mage, and if you want something melee-focused, Earthquake. I'd recommend Firestorm as you get the spell pretty early on and you can level with it (protip: most builds actually start playing at level 60s. People level up throughout the difficulties with 'leveling' setups and then switch to the real thing they want to play). Also it's op and pretty fun. ZiggyD has a vid on it titled prophecy starter builds or whatever

I have never played ES, that means: CI, hybrid, or LL.
What's the point? stacking ES looks to just under double your HP for massively less mitigation (how much armor/evasion do people usually run? or do they rely on Vaal Pact and leech over flasks/etc?).

Are the points of the build:

CI: Huge eHP pool, I assume combined with Vaal pact and leech
LL: Tons of reserved mana for auras and heralds in both mana/life; needs shavs or enough of a buffer not to get fucked by chaos damage in your small life pool
Hybrid: no fucking idea how this works... prioritize bases with armor/ES or Evasion/ES?

Overall they look harder to gear/transition to, more expensive, and shit mitigation. What's the draw?

Level 20 Ice spear: 321–482 damage (401.5 average)

Level 20 Frostbolt: 752–1129 damage (940.5 average)

Now a skill like Ice Spear can easily hit crit chance, second form providing a whooping +42% crit chance by itself.

A decent crit build will have something like 200% crit mult from tree, base is 150%, 120% crit mult from gear.

An ice spear that will crit 95% of the time, can offscreen, will hit for 401.5*(2+1.5+1.2) = 1887 BASE average damage in that scenario. In order to compete, Frostbolt would need something around +200% MORE damage.

Can it be done? Sure. But you're not offscreening. You're not benefiting from various crit perks. You're not maximizing shock and ignite from Elemental Conflux since the highest roll of a crit Ice spear is miles above the highest roll of a non-crit Frostbolt. You're not doing jack shit with a self-cast Frostbolt build.

Frostbolt is not designed to be a self-cast skill by itself. Crit is the only way to maximize variance by using Elemental Conflux, applying the highest ignite possible on a target.

Let's say it deals 100 base average damage.
5% of the time it will deal 100 damage, 95% of the time it will deal 150.

150*0.95+100*0.05 = 147.5

Now the same 100 base average damage skill with EO will deal 140 base damage (40% more damage, EO removes crit mult).

EO is strictly inferior if your skill hits crit cap, which Ice Spear always will. THEN you add crit mult into the equation.
