McCree is based off western heroes in general. Visually he's closest to Eastwood in The Man With No Name but he shares similarities with basically every iconic western protagonist (Cemetary, Sartana, Django, Silence, Josie Wales)

You can get good enough with widow to become an aimbot that headshots everyone as soon as they peek out, but that would be unreasonably hard to achieve. No it basically makes no sense, it puts the pilot in a conspicous and obvious location highly vulnerable to fire and messes with the center of gravity for the mech, actually reversing the location to the rear to make a "tail" cockpit makes a lot more sense.
