I've been playing Stellaris for a short time, and I just discovered a perfect biosphere (for my race) planet in a neighboring solar system.

My question is, how do you advance into new territory, if it's relatively close? Do you build defense stations and ground garrisons on every colony planet; or do you 'gotta go fast' everything in sight with 2-3 science vessels until you run into a possible hostile empire? I watched a YouTube video where a guy got shrekt because his main fleet got defeated, and he had to keep making retreat jumps into his home territory, but didn't have enough defense stations set up.

I'm playing as Avians with laser weapons, and I currently just have 1 science vessel with 1 corvette escort (plan to make more), and I have 4 corvettes guarding my homeworld. Another thing, do science vessels need escorts?

Next you'll discover that a military government (the one with the huge bonus of reduced ship maintenance) which also allows you to enslave others makes it even better. Conquer a fuckton of planets from those around you and divide them into slave sectors with governors who gives the slavery bonus.

Not only will you blob hard, but you will also make a huge fucking fleet and still end up having more resources than you can ever spend.

Literally thank fucking god I had so much doubt about it and didn't actually do it. I'm a huge HOI3 fan (1.5k+ hours) and I got bored on the 3rd hour. There's absolutely no content in that game and playing a minor in South America feels exactly like playing any other country - there's no country-specific flavor either. There's no special units for Jungle, no elite light infantry, the "technology" is somehow even shallower than vanilla HOI3, and don't even get me started on the rest of the shit like the puke they call a map. As far as I know the AIs ignore the core planets thing because they don't use sectors. Influence-wise though, I think they still have some impact on them - my current game is using the mod that reduces influence cost of Frontier Stations from -1.00 to -0.25 per month. I've never seen the AI build so many Frontier Outposts before compared to normal games. For my games it means some of the AI have big fat empires without having a big cluster of colonised planets

Corvettes had been using PD and Torpedoes, whereas Destroyers, Cruisers, and Battleships use large laser weapons and bomber hangers.

Now I'm thinking that I'll ditch torpedoes once I have PD of my own.

Point defence is for anything that can't hold a hangar. If you have a huge amount of carriers, though, then the swarm of fighters will destroy most missiles before they can be of effect anyway, rendering point defence redundant.

I find that the best compositions are tachyon lance destroyers supported by such carriers. Phasors/Disruptors should also be used in support to this. I think Tachyon lances are just too overpowered to use anything else. They should be balanced to be more "exclusive" and have a unique resource associated with their production. Fallen Empires don't produce any new ships because they don't have access to this resource, for example.

I keep on looking at this game and wishing it had the production and strategy mechanics of Hearts of Iron 4. Whenever I look at that game though, I wish it had room for the infinite scenarios that Stellaris has. I suppose this is just another wide vs. tall meme

Spiritualist - Happiness bonus, plus happiness from event bonus, and fits more to what Rome was for RP purposes.
Collectivist - For slavery/purging, also fits to what Rome was if you interpret this type of collectivism as not a hive mind but as a "state > individual" type of collectivism. Also being Roman was more than just an ethnic thing, it was a civic type of nationalism that could translate to aliens as well and collectivism would make it easier to bring xenos to your type of ethics.
Militarism - Rome was super militaristic and it's culture revolved around honor and other shit like that. Plus in game wise it makes military techs appear more often and you're gonna wanna conquer a lot to feed into your slavery and ever expanding demands.

Traits - Conformist, Natural Engineers, and Communal. Better ethics divergence, stacking more happiness, and more engineering research to get larger ships faster, also it fits for RP purposes.

Now government type could be several different options, but I think if you really want to be able to enslave then go for Divine Mandate. It'll make slavery acceptance 100% so no one will be upset by it and as you get alien pops to change to your ethics they'll be okay with being enslaved. Despotic Hegemony is good if you don't plan on enslaving but there's no fun in that and your mineral output will be much greater with slaves. Just remember, don't use slaves for research tiles. Any planet with your own pops should be dedicated to research or power and leave the mining to enslaved xenos. Stacking happiness like this will also boost all of your production since pops get an increase if they're 80% happy.

Wormhole instead of hyperdrive, it'll let you go more places without being boxed in. Also it'll lead to jump drives, plus your spiritualism can lead to psi jump drives so double that chance of getting better ftl tech/summoning the unbidden.

Find an AI who has large energy stockpiles. Trading lets you run a large deficit.

Paradox really needs to make AI weigh Energy more, considering that the stockpile for the stuff is much lower and the limit can't be raised with structures, and that almost everything costs energy as maintenance. Yeah I frequently will run -50 energy defecits mid game when I'm building up a huge fleet for a war and there's tons of AI's that are always willing to trade 1k to 2k energy away for an almost 1:1 ratio. I usually only have to give them 100 or 200 more minerals than I get energy but my mineral production each month is usually at the point where I could do that forever.

I think the difference between why the AI always has huge energy surpluses is it isn't building enough research labs and instead loads its planets with power plants. That would also explain why it's so easy to out tech the AI without even specializing planets and just building research labs at a decent rate.

How do you select different sizes of weapons to attach to your ships?

I have all small lasers on my corvettes, but I want to attach a medium laser turret, and save the power for something else.

However, I have no clue how to select "medium" or "large" turrets in the modules menu. I tried clicking on the "M" and "L" icons themselves, but it still selects only a small laser turret. How the fuck do you do this?

You're thinking about it wrong.

The red laser is a gun, it can fit into a small, medium, or large turret slot. So you can have small red lasers, medium red lasers, and large red lasers, but it's not determined by anything except the size of the module slot you put it into.

The small/medium/large icons just provide info on the stats of the various size of that weapon. So it'll give you the damage and rate of fire of a small red laser vs a medium red laser.

So weapons with only the L symbol can only fit into large module slots on the hull for example but there's no selecting different sizes. There's a distinction between the weapon and the turret it's placed into.

There are different hull sections to choose from. You can load a corvette up with 3 small turrets, 1 medium and 1 small, or 1 small and extra shield/armor/energy module slots.

Destroyers get more sections and more turrets depending on the section chosen. Click "new ship design" and then click the class you want and you'll understand what I mean.

While it won't save them from any 'proper' fleet, you should consider getting mods that buff Fortresses like mad. My favourite's FortressXL which gives them a huge number of slots that can easily give them a fleet power score of 7k while using nothing but T1/T2 stuff.

Strike Crafts work as well if the enemy doesn't have PD. But just imagine how ridiculous it could be if you could have 6x4 Strike Craft with 12x4 L Utility slots on a single Fortress.

This Fortress of mine was built to 'snipe' the enemy Spaceport whenever I go to war with them so it's why I gave it Arc Emitters, but this is with a 8S/4M x2 + 4L slot layout. The Flak Artilleries are only there because this species dropped torpedoes for all or nothing strike crafts, after I had shoved on enough PD to make them trivial. Strike Craft can take quite a beating off PD alone with the Beautiful Battles mod

Stuck in between two fallen empires on a hyperdrive only map. I've been trying to tech up hard and focusing on research and military tech so I can take on one of them as soon as possible. The one above me is a xenophobic isolationist with two ring worlds and a fanatic spiritualist below me with several planets. There's a holy world I can colonize but it's only got fucking 10 tiles. I think my best bet is to mass large slot destroyers since it'll take way to long to be able to get the minerals to build enough battleships to make a difference.

What do you guys think I should do?

The northern FE you probably won't be able to do anything about - AIs will mostly avoid going anywhere near the Military Isolationist FE.

The southern FE though, you'll have to hope that a 25-tile holy world is on a side which is in reach of multiple empires. This way they'll keep taking it and keep going to war with the southern FE - will take forever, but assuming each time a war happens the FE loses at least one corvette, the war of attrition over the planet will wear them down enough for you to strike through them.

Or you could always take the easy way out and restart, and not play Hyperlanes

Thinking about it, by the time Halo 3 ends and most of humanity is wiped out, you could probably call whats left of the government a Military Junta run by the UNSC. I don't think military republic really fits, since that's just a democracy where only current of ex-military service members are eligible for office, ala the Terran Federation from Starship Troopers. While you could say that technically members of the Military are the only ones tat can hold office in the UN of Halo, that's mostly due to the fact that there's not anyone left besides the UNSC and affiliated organizations, and they hardly run things in a democratic fashion.

There's always at least two Holy Worlds that spawn outside the FE - Pristine Jewel, which is always a 10-tile Gaia, and a 25-tile Gaia whose name escapes me at this time. If there were others than these two I don't remember seeing them, but AI empires will usually colonise the 25-tile Gaia regardless of the threat of the FE (they'll even place an embassy with the FE, but that alone isn't enough to placate their anger over colonising a holy world).

One of the easiest ways to find if the 25 tile's within reach of another empire is to wait and see if that FE goes to war with an empire.

Guide to warfare:

There's a mod around that lets you use FE war demands, such as Humiliate (gives you +1 influence per month for 10 years and causes the 'victim' to have -1 influence per month and -10% happiness for 10 years) and Abandon Planet, which does exactly that.

Unfortunately though, I have no idea what 'triggers' the ability to tell an empire to Abandon Planet as a war demand - chances are they have to be directly next to your empire's borders, because those were the only ones I can demand this for.

Are the empires dealing with the Scourge enough that they aren't a threat to you, or are you just waiting for them to get strong enough to pose a 'challenge'?

I can understand wanting to wait for a crisis to get big enough to be a challenge - in my current game, I'm up to the point where I've researched all the tech and my fleet's stronger than a FE's fleet, and I haven't even fought a FE or anything. Being equivalent tech to them without actually fighting them, I'd just roll them over as it is.

the only way to make them work is to meme your opponents with the Futurism tenet in autocracy, by holding off the whole game on making artist/writers/musicians and generating them all rapidly once you get futurism

you should almost always prioritize the technology-increasing techs in your tech path. Tech is everything. It doesn't mean you should go for a tech victory, as that is not so practical in MP either, it just means there is really only one optimal tech path and you should really only deviate from it for very specific reasons

The FE got themselves involved in the fight against the Unbidden, but the initial battle must've been particularly harsh on them because their fleet power is now Pathetic compared to me, whereas the two other FEs who hasn't gone to war still stands at Equivalent to me.

Is there a way to see if any other empires will join against you if you declare war on someone?

A large imperial neighbor had 4 planets secede and form a republic on my borders. I decided to annex them into my cartel of capitalist felines, but another empire of pacifist birds on the other side of my territory joined in and fucked me in the ass.

Can you stack researcher boni?
...so having a researcher with bonus to, say for example, computing not only increases research speed in computing, but also increases the chance of computing related tech to come up. Can you stack this to play the RNG? So would it work to put a computer specialist in every slot?
What about researchers on science ships who are assisting research? Are they factored into RNG?

To get to the Unbidden, I had to either go through a FE or go through another empire, which is part of a Federation. If I try to force my way through the Federation, my ally will get raped hard in the process, and I'll open up myself to aggression from the south.

I'll just push my way through the FE now though, since they've already lost their entire fleet to the Unbidden, thus no longer a threat.

This is what you could've done, Paradox. The Fallen Empire awakens after the Unbidden (or another Crisis) eats away at their empire. Probably that's what they have planned further down the track, but it could've happened.
Though I'm about to become a 'Crisis' for them, but at least it's just Idols.
