God DAMN the training on the V1 vpet is infuriating. I swear it's balanced against you. I did 50 training sequences and only won about 13 of them. I'm glad the later ones have more skill based training sequences at least, I'd lose my mind if I had to do this on multiple different vpets every 20 minutes.

Now that you mention it, I was actually wondering about vitamins/protein. I've been treating my Digimon the same way I treat my Tamagotchi IE only letting a single heart drop then getting their weight down and happiness up via the game. I've heard that weight isn't a negative thing with Digimon like it is with Tamagotchi, is that true? I've gotten the best possible Digimon with my method+the whole train 45 times thing but is weight not a factor for determining which character you get?

Feeding it vitamins is not bad at all so you can have any digimon in V1 and never have completed a single train session

Appmon have low combat potential but very specialized skills compared to other Digimon.

An Appmon can't defeat a regular Digimon in a straight out POWER VS POWER fight, it has to abuse it's unique talent to survive.

They also accel at providing support for Digimon.

I don't want to overthink Digimon, but fuck it. What's the deal with evolution in Frontier? It seems like Digimon can easily go between forms, like the Tsunomon turning into a Gabumon, but then they make it out to be something special when Grottomon turns into doctor kirby? Or is slide evolution something else entirely?

I'm not sure, I think regular evolution is stronger since in one episode Takeru was out of range of a black tower so he say "oh, we don't have to use armor evolution" and digivolved normally. Even after they unlocked the adult level, they kept using armor evolutaion from time to time, so it most be pretty equal in power, maybe armor is more consuming? The main advantage of regular evolution is that they can keep evolving, I guess.

Its hard but it can happen, you can also agree to be able to evolve more than once per digivolvephase, and there is not much to worry about because a rookie can defeat a mega without much issue if the colors are on his favor

Well if there are all these player houserules, what do you think of these?

In my experience playing there is more than enough evolving from both players that makes that unnecesary
Also your digimon reverting to rookie when losing makes you want to draw more cards to find a new line that works, but discarding too much exhausts your online deck earlier meaning if you do start an effective line that digimon will die soon anyways, its balance you have to keep that gives lot of strategy to the game

The problem with warp digivolve is that all megas of the first 3 sets have the folloeing power: "score 300 points when digivolving to this digimon" Youd have to remove that effect or the match will be over very quick

Honestly I dont like it because getting to mega is an event in this game, it rarely happens (like once every 8 matches or so) but when it does it feels awesome, that would undermine it.
But also not against people deciding their own rules together if they want, if you played the game and found it to be more fun that way then by all means

that's kind of why I wanted it, so that you can have a proper mega vs mega because there was already a mega vs weaker beatdown in the previous round. As you said, the mega would likely die in the next round if it came to such a situation anyway, so why not have fun with it?

I mean, definitely add something like "Revert back to rookie at the end of the round regardless of battle result" to the cost of Warp Evolution, but perhaps tampering with the score points rule is going too far.

Really, I'm just seeing a lot of concepts and game mechanics that are completely new to me, way different from the card battle video game.

But I think I have a good understanding of the flow, with major focus on pacing your card use for evolutions and raw power so you don't use up your lifespan too quickly. Deckbuild either rookies that share possible evolutions so you don't lock yourself out, or diversify to cover more colors/effects. Predict what digimon the opponent will evolve into so you beat them on the color chart with your own evolution...

Sleipmon fight is probably one of the most annoying in the game simply because of how hard it is to bug him, so it more or less seals off using virus types, and the lack of hard hitting data types. I'd recomend grinding up a Sakuyamon and a Plesiomon. Sakuyamon to remove his 100% speed buff and Plesiomon because it's one of the only two datas with piercing and does it better.

I'm the anon who was asking for help and I just wanted to let you know I bought the 2-player starter pack because you and your guide. I'm the kind of person who learns better by doing so I'll give you some more feedback once I've played a bit more. I know you mentioned there were some must have cards, one of which was Even Steven, but what were the others? I think a comic store near me still has booster packs for $2 rotting in some corner so if that's the case I'm going to buy a bunch, or even try to haggle a lower price for the whole case since I don't think anybody ever buys them. I'm just really hoping it's card battle and not the ugly anime trading cards. I'd love to get a little rush of nostalgia opening up brand new card packs.

Not to mention Digimon have always been equal parts goofy and cool. I mean look at Monzaemon, Numemon, Togemon, etc. I love them all but they're not like super serious dragons with armour or whatever. I'd honestly be more concerned if the new Digimon were just a bunch of humans in armour. Even steven, option eater and power freeze are staples, you need those three cards in every deck pretty much, luckily they are from booster 1 and very cheap.
You should raid that store, if the booster packs are from series 3 and above BUY THEM ALL they are rare and extremely expensive online
The anime cards look like pic related, avoid those unless you really like collecting anime screencaps in card form.

I meant to say I was the anon from the other thread, who requested the guide, my bad. But yeah I'm actually pretty excited to play a couple rounds. I used to immediately shut out card games because the only people who ever wanted to play with me were annoying dicks so it left a bad taste in my mouth, plus nothing about the bigger games like MTG or Yugioh really drew my attention. I mean I even have a huge stack of old Pokemon cards and I never learned how to play. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to focus on the rules or I'd lose interest but I'm still pretty excited. I just hope my MTG roommate will like it and be willing to play it with me a lot.

I know I've seen Digimon card packs around in discount/thrift/comic stores but in all likelihood they could have been the anime ones. I'm still holding out hope though, and as soon as I can go out to a couple places I'll know for sure. Fingers crossed on that one. I do remember they had the 2-Player pack at this one comic store for like, 24.99 around all the other Digimon stuff so there's still hope.

I also bought a bunch of Japanese cards on a whim the other day, and plan to buy more. I know you mentioned mixing Japanese and English cards is possible and since I can understand a decent amount of Japanese (or can at least look up what I don't get) I could try and help you build some guidelines for that I guess?

The biggest question in allowing Japanese cards is how far you want to go, just allowing digimon cards is easy enough if we ignore all the effects in the cards that dont exist in digibattle, if you want to adapt those effects or the power option cards that would require a lot of work that Im not even too sure its worth it because at that point you might as well just play the japanese game.

The games are quite different when you get down to it, do you know anything about the JP game?
You have to set up your option cards face down in the preliminary phase so you can only use 3 option cards in battle, duplicates are allowed and you lose points instead of winning them.

I honestly kinda like digibattle better, the japanese game kinda overwhelms me with its huge amount of cards and that a deck with the uber rare expensive cards destroys any regular deck, digibattle is more balanced, not to mention Id have no one to play with.
I own about 150 of them though, bought them because I found them for cheap.

The main problem with digibattle was how little whoever made the conversion cared, the wording in a TCG must be consistent and solid as an example the card st-58 digiduel says "you may only use one of these cards per duel"
Which makes no sense because you cannot have more than one of that card in your deck, why is that line there?
Because the Japanese version of the card has that line of course it makes sense there because you can have duplicate cards in that game

Comparing the JP cards to the english cards to try and see the logic they followed to convert the rules is kinda amusing and it makes you understand why some english cards say some strange things that you have to modify better like I did in that piece I wrote so it makes sense

My whole life I've had people asking me what my art style is derived from and I usually just say whatever thing I'm into at the time which is met with "No that can't be it...." and I was always confused about that. After getting back into Digimon all these years later I realise that it's fucking Digimon. Weird proportions, the way I draw claws/muscles/details, the sort of mix of western and Japanese, etc. I know this is bordering on blog tier but I can't believe it took me so long to get that. Digimon really HAS changed my life. I remember borrowing my friend's cards and taking my favourite Digimon features to make my own original monsters and that just stuck with me I guess. Does anybody else share this experience? That is, Digimon being something crazy formative like that.

Garbagemon was one of the trailers for a brief moment, ironically enough. With that said I don't think the absence of old Digimon in the trailers means anything really. It's pretty evident that they're trying to get a little bit of that Youkai Watch money, which isn't a bad thing. I love Youkai Watch but they're definitely missing a key part here and it's a game as good and fun as the original YW. I still think Appmon will do fine regardless, it'll definitely sell some toys and maybe even be top downloaded app for a while, but it doesn't have the lasting power of YW. They can't do a Digimon anime without including old Digimon though, since there's such a massive backlog to choose from and make episodes around. Of course I could be wrong, and this could be a hard reset or something but considering Garbagemon of all Digimon was shown I wouldn't worry about that.

Not sure where you're getting that info from because both were really well received. YW got a 36/40 in Famitsu and the anime is genuinely entertaining. There's definitely some flaws in the first game and the later games improved an already solid game. The ending being fun and catchy was just a cherry on top. Everything just hit the right notes so it did well. I know it's hard to believe that something can be liked because it's genuinely fun but it's possible. Powerful merchandising also helps.
