I know we often say "X is a shittier version of Y" here but in this case it's absolutely true, they have almost exactly the same hitboxes and hardpoints, the only difference is that the Rifleman mounts smaller weapons and has less armor. Hawken wasn't a bad game despite how ADH fucked up over and over again and couldn't figure out where to go. Maybe if they pulled their heads out of their asses and spent more time developing their game instead of making films and comic books it might have been great. We'll never know since it's forever unfinished and will never see another update.

That said the closed beta of MWO was already better than hawken at any point, simply because it was a proper stompy mech game with unique qualities and not another mediocre fps clone in a sea of mediocre fps.

At one point, the devs and the internet at large were convinced that hawken would rival League of Legends' playerbase? The game was so hyped, they were gonna do a TV series, a card game, a movie, comic books, toys, and a youtube exclusive show. Only the card game actually made it, and it's allegedly more balanced than hawken itself.

As much as the PIG is slow and stupid, it's still way better than that and always will be.

Most folks will suggest a medium or heavy- if you do, aim at the top of the weight class- 55 for a medium, 70-75 for a heavy.

Clanwise, the Stormcrow and Timber Wolf are good choices. Marauders aren't bad IS heavies (and the Black Knight is even better), the Griffin line is a pretty popular IS medium.

Just remember that you'll end up buying at least three variants to master the chassis and to theorycraft (and post builds) via Smurfy.

New player, to learn how a mech works and all I would suggest starting with a Hunchback 4G. Once you learn how to master how they work they have more armor than a Dire Wolf.

Clan Mech, I'd go around with a Timber Wolf or so. Clans are expensive as shit right now, and they're underpowered atm. But they have a really hard learning curve.

Heavies are the most common type you'll run into in MWO, being sufficiently mobile while still packing plentiful firepower and good armor.

Lights take more effort and constant mobility but can generate obscene firepower-to-weight ratios (Arctic Cheetah, Jenner IIC all-missiles variant, Oxide (Jenner Hero), Firestarter).

Mediums tend to not get enough mobility to compensate for the lighter armor and lesser firepower than a heavy, but even so there's some good ones and even unique roles. Streak-boating Stormcrows are the bane of light 'Mechs everywhere, for example.

Assaults tend to suffer from all-in syndrome- that is, most aren't mobile enough to get out of trouble, only shoot their way out of it if possible.

This tends not to work when you get left behind and swarmed by lights or gangbanged because you're a hueg target. Right now, the best assault (Kodiak) is so new it's real money, but even so it's fucking common as hell because it's the first competent Clan assault not held back by one major flaw or another. IS side, the Mauler is a brutal dakka boat (but clumsy with a full load), the Atlas can be a 100-ton linebreaker ram, the King Crab is a decent if low-slung assault with capable builds...but PUG assault piloting can be a very frustrating place if you're not agile enough to keep up with the heavy deathball.

The -4G literally is the original medium from the very start of the MWO, the first of it's kind here.

It's still reasonably good but incredibly predictable due to being around so long that everyone knows it's tricks. The Hunchback line is pretty predictable based on their bonuses (quirks), but that doesn't mean they're not GOOD old dog tricks- and there's some really decent quirkage in the various lines.

Take the -4H. Five energy hardpoints (given one's in the head so nothing bug there). 20% better energy cooldown. 20% less heat firing energy weapons. Yeah, it's got AC/10 quirks too but boooy will it snap out laser fire quick and cold.

The -4G's best with an AC/20 mount, but it can get plenty of reach, speed AND accuracy out of whatever dakka you put in that hump.

When you're looking at 'Mechs, always have an eye for their quirks, which can mean a chassis seriously throws more weight around than you'd think. Black Knights are terrorbots because they're not only laserboats, but well-quirked ones.

Double heatsinks. Bar none. Playing with singles in MWO is torture. I'd suggest Endosteel as well- only do ferro as the last-resort on IS builds as endo + standard armor is more weight efficient than standard internals + ferro.

LOTS OF THE GUNS. A Hunchback-4G has that AC/20, but a corresponding Hunch IIC is likely to be packing twin UAC/10s instead, along with more mobility.

Both lines have their virtues.

Yeah, but if he goes with IS he'll learn that Inner Sphere Auto Cannons shit on Clan Auto Cannons. Clan XL's are not all that great either. Get one side popped and bam you get the heat penalty. A single AC/20 vs 3 Ultra 10 Shots. Depending how accurate and stable the person is capable of firing. The Clan UACS may win. But if they start hesitating, the AC/20 will win.

Also, pilot skills definitely have meaningful effects on performance. Without basics, you're notably undereffective. Elites get your firing and runspeed up to snuff, and finishing elites doubles the effect of basic pilot skills.

Mastering gets you an extra module slot, but that's important only when you've got the money to put those modules in and tweak your robot's performance up a bit more. Not worth sweating till you have some extra C-bills socked away.

Also, don't spend global exp on anything other than module unlocks, never on a specific chassis's skillups.

And heat penalty + slower movement beats the hell out of dead, which is what an IS XL engine does if you pop a side torso. That's a weak point on most Hunchbacks- people will see and focus that torso ballistic mount, as taking off that big ol' hump means you also take most of the Hunchback's firepower with it.

The -SP gets around this (and has been working out with swol internal buffs) by splitting it's firepower evenly between both sides, unlike most IS Hunchbacks where it's RT gone, target crippled.

It's a solution that addresses two problems.

One, it's to keep you from getting shoehorned into a single mech/tank. If you have to wait for the match to end on one mech/tank, then it incentivizes you to buy and try as many as you can.

Secondly, it keeps people from farming xp and c-bills by simply joining a match, dying, and then repeating the process. A scenario that would happen a lot more than you think.

Why are autocannons so bloody heavy?

As far as I understand things, the various autocannons are similar in function to modern weapon systems:

AC2 - 25 - 30mm / anti infantry and vehicles

AC5 - 50 - 85mm / anti air purposes

AC10 - 105 - 120mm / Armored class primary armament, anti infantry, vehicle, and armor

AC20 - 180 - 203 mm / Howitzer class, Anti everything, kaboom.

The M1A2 abhrams and most other modern battletanks mount something similar to a 105 - 120 mm cannon. For at least this design, including everything from the barrel and mount, its total tonnage makes up around 5 tons. So how do we scale up from 5 tons to 12? This is pretty ancient technology, if nothing else, I would have expected it to weigh significantly less than what it does now. We've been making cannons for literally centuries. We're real good at making something go fast and go boom. So why do mech mounted cannons weigh so bloody much? Even on a balancing standpoint it makes no sense. A PPC weighs 7 tons, does 10 damage, though it produces a massive amount of heat. An autocannon 10 weighs 12 + 1 tons and does the same damage, with a limited number of shots. In essence, you could equip a ppc, and 6 heat sinks, and have no risk of ammo explosions, and the ability to hit from much farther. Ac2's and 5's are pretty much a joke, and the AC20 is fairly situational(though it's incredibly fun to use)

I know the devs have mentioned that they are going to buff the lower calibure autocannons, but I think every single one of them needs to be buffed to some regard, or energy weapons need to run hotter.

Here is a little teaser of a little project I have been working on for fun. This is actual in-game footage of a game called ArmA with mods. Just wanted to create a little fantasy for me of what a tactical simulation type shooter was set in the Battletech universe. I'm curious to know what you guys think. Its not supposed to be much as a video, no oscars here, but it was definitely fun making it.

Battletech autocannons are retarded with their inverse size to range relationship.

All autocannons should have 1,500m velocity and fire in 3 round bursts that splits up their damage. They should also generate almost no heat and thus complement energy weapons instead of forcing everyone into boating one type of weapon.

Ac2 should weigh 3 tons and have 450m base range.
Ac5 should weigh 6 tons and have 700m base range.

Because bigger mechs tend to have less critical slots than they have tonnage, therefore ballistics are often seen on these mechs where they can't fit all the heatsinks but can heft around big guns. The basic cooling factor from a fusion engine gives enough leeway for smaller mechs to get away with nothing except energy weapons, but it is not enough for gunboat bigmechs.

Also, autocannons are not equivalent to modern day tank cannons. An AC/20 is an abstracted weapon class that is at it's median a 150mm cannon that fires 10 rounds per burst, probably within a few seconds each. They're not really anywhere on the same level.

Of course, MWO doesn't model ACs very well.

A modern tank gun is a "rifle" in Battletech terms- a single shot weapon that does more poorly against modern armor (which ACs have a better punch against, due to the ablative nature f'ing up single shells more than repeated hits). ACs generally are clipping off a burst of various sizes (ranging from 3 120mm shots for the Marauder's AC/5 to dozens of smaller rounds in some cases even in the same damage class), rapid-fire from a cassette container (basically, a "clip" of shells for a single burst).

AC's also don't exist in a void- in TT, energy weapons are much less efficient for armored vehicles and AC's also have various kinds of specialty ammo, including semi-guided and AP ammo that MWO utterly lacks.

MWO's ACs are far more useful, given the fact that TT heat sinks in 10-second intervals and MWO's heat sinks in realtime.

Even those wide open fields generally have a path to brawl ranges- I've mugged people with SRMs and lasers on Polar. You either are mobile enough to endrun the enemy, or smart enough to work your way in with whatever terrain allows. Even Polar has ditches and trenches you can use to close the range. Alpine's the only real "fuck you" map for brawlers.
