Thread for the discussion of visual novels originally created in English, other than those belonging to /ksg/.

Do you have a question about a Japanese visual novel or a translation of it?
/vn/ is ready to answer it. We are not them.

Even her breasts can't stand the embarrassment of being in an AJ Tilley game.

I think the reasoning is clear. I mean, did you not see the screenshot?

Kasumi has a contagious boob inflation disease. Saeki is confronting her over it and Kasumi is apologizing.

It's not enough, though.

It's never going to be enough.

Saeki is going to make Kasumi pay.

Also, I can't get over the idea that the girl on the left has mermaid ears. I know it's supposed to be a bow, but it's more interesting being mermaid ears in an otherwise normal setting.

You can do it, anon.

I couldn't get any work done the past four days, was out of town. Shit sucks.

How's your workload looking?
>>
>>144615238
Technically, I'm still about 4 days ahead of schedule, I guess.

According to my vague idea of my schedule, month one is for the first draft of the script and if I don't feel like writing, then I should at least do concept art/sketches. Month two is putting together the placeholders and script and then replacing the placeholders. If there's any time left over, I get to try the non-essentials. Not doing anything fancy with the coding, so hopefully I can finish everything I want.

Sorry to hear you were out of town. You feel like you're still on track even so?
>>
>>144615681
I'm one half of a two person team.

The partner's been spectacular about their workload, so now I feel even worse.
Just gotta go and catch up.
>>
>>144615780
Nah - don't feel bad. Presumably you both knew in advance you'd have to go out of town. The other half trucking ahead just means that you have something to work off of instead of both of you having a cold start. You can play off of what they did and probably end up much more productive.

Turns from slice of life with a dash of mystery in the first episode (only one that's free) into an full time SJW advert by the fith one. Choice don't carry over between episodes, so the writting is pretty ambiguous when it comes to previous events, and choices don't really seem to matter at all.

Headcanon means things you the reader/viewer like to believe about characters in a story that are not explicitly stated to be true. Sometimes it means it's a theory which COULD be true. Sometimes you know it's not the case but this is the version of events that you prefer to think about.

It's most commonly a shorthand way of differentiating when you're talking about the official canon and when you're talking about your opinions/desires.

Many people headcanon that Elsa in Frozen is gay. It's not actual canon.

The Phantom the Rebound scam is getting even better. Someone claiming to have worked for Aki Sekai says that he's not behind the second scam kickstarter, another scammer is. I love Wanaca's art and you can't stop me.

I'm not going to play the game because it's yuri and also not voice acted, which is an absolute must for porn, but I did look through the assets. Comfortable with writing != comfortable with publishing/selling. There's a lot of stuff I'd write on, say, AO3, that I don't dare put in games for sale.

Severely underage incestuous rape + impregnation fanfic? Sure!

Not him, but kinetic doesn't mean only one love interest. It could be a harem, or they could break up and the MC could see other people. There's also the possibility of love rivals showing up, like the Citrus manga. That angel singer seemed really into Toko for example.
>>
>>144674217
What I was
>implying
is kinetic novels are usually done as lazily as possible, which means you usually get a sub-par short story, and slideshow to watch while listening to the soothing sound of a piano falling down a flight a stairs. And a focus on the most boring person in the entire story as the single LI.

Do you complain that you don't get to pick the ending to your favorite TV show? A story can be good or shit, but it being kinetic has nothing to do with that.
>>
>>144675419
I'd be kinda upset if some genius started to air tv shows without audio or visuals, and tried to sell it to me as a valid alternative.

Or a show that forgoes any kind of script and is basically just a CC feed monitoring random people 24 hours a day. Fuck, they already did that.
>>
>>144675819
But that comparison is garbage

The vast majority of stories are entirely linear, and just because it's possible to create branches through visual novels doesn't mean that branches are inherently better

There's nothing to act superior about
>>
>>144674649
AJ Tilley's games have choices and they're as lazy as you can get. What's the point of routes if they're all shallow or poorly written? Going by wordcount, it also means you get a less in depth story, since the game tells several much shorter ones.
>>
>>144674882
KNs can be good, but they demand more from the writer, and too many people interested in these anime games don't know how to write.

Also, if you as a player are into these games to be catered to with a buffet of love interests, KNs will seem pretty pointless.

It feels like I've been seeing more Steam customers wanting voice acting in VNs lately. Does anyone else think this too?

I don't understand why people expect it when most devs can't even afford decent VAs. What's the point if most people will just mute them because they don't like it?
>>
>>144688451

It's because they think they'll get japanese level VAs.
>>
>>144688451
>What's the point if most people will just mute them because they don't like it?
Ignore them. Investing in shit like that won't bring you new customers and is likely to lower the opinion the ones you already have hold of your project.
>>
>>144688546
I can't afford the English cast of Naruto. Heck, I can't even afford the cast of Teen Titans Go!

Most of the people that apply are just random people on social media who are either fans, or are looking to break into the pro VA scene despite not having the talent for it. The recording equipment is also an issue, and you can end up with unleveled audio like AJ Tilley if not a ton of work is put into fixing up the audio files.
>>
Haven't numerous devs had VA agency horror stories where they were expected to pay way more than what was initially agreed upon?

And let's not forget the trouble The Letter ran into when they let a VA be casting director.

That's why you get contracts for everything. EVERYTHING. And they should have broken down costs, too.

>That's why you get contracts for everything. EVERYTHING.
That's not how lemma and other amateur groups roll. They just rely on a series of emails to be the formal agreement. And most people can't even figure out the basics of business management, so they wouldn't know how to make a good contract.

The risk of VAs is that they can make or break a character. I think a great example is Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Objectively speaking, Dorian is written in a very dull way, but his VA is easily the best one out of the whole cast. On the other hand, Iron Bull's VA is so fucking bad he single handedly ruined the character.

Now, extrapolate that to a medium like VNs and well...
>>
>>144690550
It's a matter of taste, though, surely? Plenty of people think Bull's VA was pretty good. I hadn't seen anyone complain about it before. (To me, it gave him character, I just wasn't interested in that character.)

Say one negative word about Cullen's voice acting and I will cut you.
>>
>>144690209

>>
>>144691030

When the game came out, a lot of people complained of how flat Freddie's acting was in comparison to the text. Like, he'd be talking about fucking a character into the mattress and his voice would have exactly one tone through the entire conversation.

>>144691654

It's not terrible, but personally I can't stand when english-speaking female VAs try to imitate the high pitch of female japanese VAs.
>>
>>144692151
It's kind of a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation with dubs. It sounds stupid to fake it but it also sound stupid to take those characters and rework them into much lower voices.

In an English original, though, why try to make yourself sound like a bad dub?
>>
>>144692151
The thing I find interesting about Lupiesoft's approach is that it'll be a commercial DLC. If people like the game and not the voices, then they don't have to buy the voices. There's also the potential for rampant piracy of the voice patch. Would you pay between $2-$5 extra for those voices? The game itself was only $5, or $2.50 while on sale, so that could make the voices seem really expensive.
>>
>>144691654

Anyone with knowledge on VA quotes? Would try to calculate how much it'll take to break even. Right now, Reject Demon Toko has $4.99 of 7,000 sales on steam within the first month. Not bad for a first project. taxes will take 30% of that, and SP will butcher it with another 30%
>>
>>144693202
>Reject Demon Toko has $4.99 of 7,000 sales on steam within the first month.
?
a) you're taking steamspy as actual data
b) that's the first YEAR, not the first MONTH
c) and includes any giveaways and bundles
>>
>>144693202

> 30% for taxes
> 30% steam cut
> 30% publisher cut
> dev takes %10

this can't be right... can it?
>>
>>144693646
Well, no, because you don't know how to math.

If you divide something by 3 three times that doesn't mean you've reduced it to zero.

Start with $10,000 in gross sales. Steam takes 30%. You now have $7000 in payout.

Publisher takes 30% of $7K, leaving you with $4900.

If your taxes are actually 30% of that, then the final result would be $3430.
>>
>>144693646
Taxes are deducted on the net, not the gross.
>>
>>144693975
>the final result would be $3430
They can only survive on that because Tao does almost all the art for their games.
>>
>>144694217
That number was a made up round number to demonstrate percentages and nothing to do with the actual gross sales of the game.
>>
>>144693646
It's compounding from profit, not total gross sales.

>Assume it earns $1,000,000.
>Game becomes $666,667 (30%) to build mexican wall. (For international)
>Becomes $444,444 (30%) after gaben takes a bite.
>Becomes $296,296 (30%) to pay for two tweets.
So, more or less, you get .296 for every dollar you make.
>>
>>144694490
My bad, I actually calculated it based from continues 33%, not 30%
>>
>>144694490
>tfw US and my country doesn't have trade agreements on double taxation and I'll still have to pay taxes to government based from net profit

Nostalgia? The fact that people are used to hearing it in dubs, so it's what they're used to?
>>
>>144695601
US law, apparently any profit made from the US is susceptible to tax. This is why Steam requires us foreigners to get an ITIN (International Tax Identification Number) before putting out the game. And, yes, that's a full 30%.

God, I can't wait for a bitcoin-only gamestore to come out.
>>
>>144696182
That's bizarre, I see other websites (not related to Steam) claiming that if you're doing digital business and you don't have any physical location or employees in the US you shouldn't be liable for US income tax. I suppose it might make a difference if they're talking about you directly selling to customers in the US vs getting payouts from a US-based company like Steam though. Still doesn't make sense to me.

My own tax situation is complicated in entirely different ways but i'm in a treaty country so THAT particular problem isn't one for me.

You want your vn to sound like a Saturday morning cartoon?
>>
>>144691654
Okay, this is just my opinion but if you want VA you seriously need to consider changing the dialogue to fit with the voice.

"I can take care of myself Toko, after all I'm a college student now", really? This does not translate well to voice, especially with the chosen VA. I don't know the context, but it seems either one to one or small group, and if either, why would they use "Toko" and not directly say she can take care of herself. There is just so much that doesn't flow, it makes it hard to like, even if the VA is good, they are stuck with that writing.

Anyone who is going after VA I think needs to either let the VA change the line so they sound natural or change it themselves. Don't use the first thing you get.
>>
>>144700782
>it seems either one to one or small group, and if either, why would they use "Toko" and not directly say she can take care of herself.

How the fuck can any director know what you want more than the person who created the characters and wrote the dialogue? You make it sound as if saying "That's great, no need to retake" and "Retake the line, make it sound more _______ this time" is hard.
>>
>>144739360
>How the fuck can any director know what you want more than the person who created the characters and wrote the dialogue?
Someone I know works in local films and I asked the same question. Basically everyone has their own views on the script. The Director, the lights people, the sound people, the producers, the production people and of course the creator.

You'll just have to make sure you communicate with the director about how you want it. The director, well, directs everyone involved. Of course you can be the director yourself.

I like working alone though so that's all quite hard for me to wrap around my head with so I get what you mean.
>>
>>144739360
>"Retake the line, make it sound more _______ this time"

I mean he's correct in a sense, it just doesn't pan too well with VA. You pay people to do what you want, not tell you their opinions unless you want opinions. You should be taking opinions from creatives though, even if you don't want to use them. These people can make or break your product, so hearing them out might just make it rather than break it. Leave the "do what you're told and nothing else" to jobs that don't really need opinion.
>>
>>144741462
>>144741654
You probably are refering to people who can't take any sort of criticism, but that's not what I am talking about. Of course, I'd take into consideration the VAs valuable experience based input, but the final decision is something you have to make on your own. It's like having an editor: you don't just blindly accept every change they make. Unless you lack a judgement of your own and are a prisoner of every single specialist involved in your VN, that is.

You could, but you'd have to be extremely lucky or hit a niche like the Sakura games.

>>
Someone should make a VN about talentless VAs trying to cope with being kicked out of VAs Academy. That would justify the horrible voices as a plot requirement. You could literally get drunk with a couple of friends and record it all in one evening.
>>
Alright, played the free Sunrider game and the story was fucking awful, amazed that this shit got backed
>forced fucking romance
Anyways, my question is;
Is there a lot of demand for sci-fi/space VNs? I'd love to write one that doesn't make me cringe throughout, but I'm a perfectionist and I'd want to sink massive amounts of time into divergent storylines (fucked up and lost a section of hard gameplay? That's okay, it's not a game over. You just won't be as well off in the story as a result.)
>>
>>144776615

That depends. I could see a demand for things like Star Trek or even fantasy in space like Star Wars, but not for hard sci fi like Space Odyssey or even Moon.
>>
>>144777042
You add waifus and Space Odyssey-esque becomes awesome because has both a good plot and PLOT.
>>
>>144777042
It'd be what, medium sci-fi. I want a reasonably believable world with a bit of zany shit (Itano Circus, spinal railguns, all that fun stuff)
Heavy gameplay focus- there'd be a casual difficulty where you just buy upgrade packages and the game is easier, but normal+ difficulties would let you rewire your entire warship for free efficiency or firepower boosts. Maybe you make shield generation more power efficient, or maybe your shields reroute to your railgun making you powerful but vulnerable when you fire. You'd choose where to mount weapons, how ammo flows, maybe even corridor layout to make your ship harder to board. That'd all be optional but beneficial. There'd be solid story with a large cast to back it up, although harder difficulties would run the risk of permanent death for all of your crew- no plot-armoured waifus.
>>
>>144776615
What's out there right now? Sunrider, Rising Angels, and Invisible Apartment.
>>
>>144777789

Now it just begs the question: Have you worked on a game before? Because that all sounds good, but the more gameplay the harder it's to balance without either dropping the project or making it boring.

>>
>>144778263

>>
>>144777789
Just as >>144778196 anon says, that is some serious programming. It's like trying to merge FTL with good ole Critical Point. The results could be awesome, but... I hope you own a bunch of slaves well versed in assorted trades.
>>
>>144778196
It's a serious undertaking and I won't even pretend it'd be easy to code or balance. I want to elaborate more on wiring- you buy a cheap corvette with low quality wiring in a poor config (it is a cheap warship, after all)
With the right knowledge you can rewire the ship for a bit of time/manpower and see significant boosts. Maybe you pay for a bit of high quality wiring for vital wiring, so while your hallways flicker under fire your shields don't. I'd like to reward knowledgeable players with the tools to really fine-tune their ships for the maximum reward, which would add a lot of gameplay and make harder difficulties more tolerable. You could still do well on normal without ever touching the advanced customization though.
Finally it'd allow cool conversions, like turning a cargo ship into a missile barge.
>>
Plot. I'll admit that I've just drafted/brainstormed this today. You'd start out as a young officer graduate assigned to a frontline ship in the middle of a war. Basically you're a faceless mook and you will rarely fight alone. Your first few battles won't even have you being a heroic MvP, you'll just do better than an average Lt/Captain if you're good at the game (or even be completely average.) Promotions will affect the storyline a bit, and be given out at a few major intervals depending on performance. There will also be risks of major, story-altering deaths (your fleet admiral dies due to your incompetence, war goes downhill for you. Game gets harder and the story bleaker.)
Maybe a large expac if the game does well that allows you to desert and work as a mercenary while keeping a low profile to avoid being found and court-martialed, maybe a completely different plot line for the MC (born on a small world, merc from the beginning with no pressure from the military) or maybe even a path where you can defect and fight for the other side.
>>
>>144780880
It is a cool idea, certainly more interesting than the far more prevalent 'lose a fight, repeat mission' approach. You might want to add some sort of backstory to thar war thingie though, if you want the game to fall in the realms of VNs instead of space sims (not strictly necessary, but since you are posting here...). Also, waifus are not a strict requirement, but if you are confortable adding them they sure are not going to hurt your sales.

Apart from that, execution is everything. Good luck.
>>
>>144781715
There'll be plenty of lore and exposition on the war. I'm posting it here because I figure a VN format is the best way to deliver the story outside of combat. Waifus are definitely a plan, probably aim for a solid 12-15 (the scale I have in mind is massive, after all. Also helps to have backups when you run the risk of losing a couple waifus to brutal space combat)

>>
>>144783604
i've seen praise for her writing but the weird subject matter, flowery gui, and artwork makes it hard for me to make the plunge.
>>
Your gameplay affects the story. There'd be port of call waifus who are easy enough to get at, and maybe one or two merc/foreign transfers who wouldn't mind fraternizing with you, but some of the actual ship crew would be "reward" waifus. Want to romance them? That's a risky proposition considering regulations forbidding fraternization. Of course, if you did well enough and curried enough favor High Command would be more than willing to overlook the fact you're pounding your navigator's pussy every night, but not so much if you're a mediocre commander who is letting your flirting with her distract you during battle. There'd be girls who are more willing to break regs, and some that'd stonewall you and be very hard to actually get with. There'd also be your crew to consider- maybe you don't have enough political clout, but if your crew values you enough because you keep them safe and comfortable then who's going to report your romantic ventures to high command? There'd also ideally be public opinion (High Command isn't going to punish you if you're a high profile captain whose romance wins the heart of the people, and they'll give you more resources and support outside of overlooking your romance too.)
So, three basic systems with a lot of complexity.
How the fleet/brass views you (how much favor you curry from battlefield results)
How your crew views you (Do they love and respect you? Do they hate and fear you because you're willing to sacrifice their lives for tactical advantages in battle?)
How the general public views you (Are you keeping civilians safe from pirates? Are you winning key battles with decisive strokes and painting a picture for yourself as a war hero?)
>what if I get regs brought down on me?
Your waifu gets transferred to another warship in the fleet. You might be able to get her back, but that's a lot easier said than done. Also there's always a chance that her ship gets sunk in battle, so best hurry.

>>

Depends. Do you trust the person to not rob you blind and for the project to actually make profit? Go ahead.

Otherwise, hell no.
>>
>>144810995
In almost all cases, yes. Rev-share has the potential to pay more but also, especially with amateurs/indies, there's a very good chance that the project will just fail and you'll never get a cent from it. I'm a writer, not a musician, but generally I'll only work for rev-share if it's with someone I trust or who has a good track record of completion, or if everything else is done or close to done.

You don't need to project at me because I'm saying that I enjoy things that are made well

Literally all I was saying was "I think it's lazy and an indicator of poor quality that this person is using the default quick menu instead of trying to personalize it", as well as "I enjoy things that are made well and have time and effort put into them", so if you want to try and take personal shots you can basically get fucked

>>144811716
I definitely don't disagree
>>
>>144812717

Yeah, most serious composers charge that way. For fairly well-known, good composers it seems like $100/minute is the norm.

Of course, if you're not starving for cash, it might be easier/preferable to start off with lower rates and build a name for yourself, and charge more as you get better and more experienced.

I've also seen some people who just charge by the track, but there are a lot of potential issues there if you ended up working for someone crazy.

Yes, it's quite common, there are sites devoted to people putting their pre-made tracks up for sale. In some ways it might be easier to find someone who actually needed music and make what they wanted.

Also, regarding your

said is true. A common strategy for sites like that is to have a lot of tracks in different styles/appropriate for different occasions up so you can maximize your chances of passive income. A good site for that is AudioJungle.

Other than that, you're already on the right path by making yourself available on developer forums. Just have a good portfolio on SC and update every now and then with new tracks.

I looked at the VNDB list for EVN and was really disappointed. Like, the first page, 98% have android/ios/psp icons, so you know those are family friendly. The other 2% are family-friendly anyway, except Katawa Shoujo. I don't get it. I'm not the kind that needs hentai-level porn action, but there's nothing wrong with adult subject matter. It adds a little spice. I have no interest in reading anything that Apple would sign off on. I get enough children books and movies from being around my kids. Is this how EVNs will always be?

No. Remember that /evn/ is a minority, not a majority. They'll even say they're outright harming the medium. They whine every time MG licenses a nukige despite those being their most consistently selling titles.

Too few creators realize this. The best way to "advertise" your first game is to release a second game. This doubles the chances for you to be "discovered," and if someone becomes a "fan," it also doubles the amount of money that they can spend on you.

An example from the literary world, Mistborn is one of Brandon Sanderson's "flagship" series, but the first book in the series actually had comparatively weak sales when it first released. It wasn't until he got further into his career that more people discovered the Mistborn franchise and purchased the first book in the series (and the rest of them as well, of course).

Lemmasoft is full of malaysians and underage kids for whom porn is ILLEGAL. So yes, the majority there is against it.

>They whine every time MG licenses a nukige despite those being their most consistently selling titles.

Because if you're into VNs for the story, even if you're not a prude, it's boring when they license more plotless porn.

>gives off the impression that VNs are all for pervert otaku. They'll even say they're outright harming the medium

Now, this is a real debate, but I don't think it's the majority that has this opinion. Certainly not on reddit.

>Because if you're into VNs for the story, even if you're not a prude, it's boring when they license more plotless porn
I think the problem is poor stories period, regardless of whether they contain porn.
Porn doesn't automatically invalidate a story somehow. Instead of railing against porn, rail against the devs who only use stories as an excuse to deliver porn.
>>
>>144855684
You put too much faith in the ability to discern of current day people. Most of them are only capable of thinking in terms of 'this is good as a whole' and 'this is bad as a whole'.

>>>They whine every time MG licenses a nukige despite those being their most consistently selling titles.

>I think the problem is poor stories period, regardless of whether they contain porn.

Yes, but it's pretty rare for them to bother licensing something if it doesn't contain something that they expect the audience to be interested in, and most of the time that's either story or lots-of-porn.

A game needs some reason for people to buy it, especially now when there's more competition so it's not just "this is the only VN we'll get this year".

>Porn doesn't automatically invalidate a story somehow

No, but 'nukige' generally means there's not much of a plot there.
>>
>>144856654
>No, but 'nukige' generally means there's not much of a plot there.
They can have decent, if simplistic stories. And some even have likable characters. Take Kyonyuu Fantasy for example, it's about cowtits, but the MC and story are both quite enjoyable.

>>
>>144857907
Yeah, I've heard it's supposed to be good.
On the other hand people claimed that Touma Kojirou’s Detective File -Murder at the Opera House- had a plot. And, I mean, I guess it does, but it's about five minutes of plot and a pretty obvious reveal, wrapped around a lot of porn.
>>

>I was also pleasantly surprised by the professional quality of the writing. Sentences flow correctly, descriptions are descriptive, and I don't see the mess of redundant words and poor word choice that I expect in amateur writing. The text isn't riddled with typos either.

pretty fucking low bar there

Someone's going to claim that most EVNs don't pass even that bar. Which is true if you count every twelve year old's My First RenPy as a serious EVN.
>>
>>144858510
I think the difference is in quality and length of the title. Touma is only a few hours long at most, with a shallow, rushed plot, while Kyonyuu is a full length title, telling a complete rags to riches fantasy adventure story.

>>

Eh. Games have successfully launched durnig the seasonal sale events before. Launching right before it gives you that brief burst of 'new game' promotion on top of the sales hunters during the big event. It's not like any other choice is obviously better.
