When you get right down to it the whole point is that the idyllic duchy is the real monster.

The parents created Syanna's problem and exacerbated it with corrupt knights.

Then, years later, you have the duchess who, out of pure selfishness, ignores the wisdom of a higher vampire and witcher and goes full retard even after meeting the higher vampire that was the beast and stating that he's suffering. Even Syanna shows more concern about the people than the Duchess does.

And Dettlaff is the naive innocent in all of this that basically was cast into the shape of a monster and became it because of the wickedness of the Duchy.

No one is more of a shit than the Duchess when all is said and done. Pretty much everyone that started the Blood and Wine story as decent people end it as shits, and everyone that starts as shits end up decent, pretty cool people.

Which is something I'm afraid of. I don't know if you've played CP2020, but I did, a lot, and the world was absolutely the worst bit of it.

Let's see, the main setting was a city that was so edgy they named it Night City. It came with a full-fledged battlezone for various gangs to fight their wars in, and said gangs include clowns and mimes, as well as the usual borged up yobs. No public emergency service either, because of THE MAN, so the two main commercial ambulances go in like C-SAR, guns blazing, and ambush each other for calls. Of course, there are no good coppers, because they're THE MAN. There's a Japantown filled with people with Fauxpanese names and of course there is Arasaka because Japan wants to take over the world and they're also THE MAN.

Let's see some of the classic characters that can be found. Of course there is fucking Johnny Silverhand of the band SAMURAI who is so against THE MAN that he starts a riot near the Arasaka building, or his (IIRC) ex-girlfriend who developed some literal killer computer software and was kidnapped by Arasaka for it because of course. Or the hyper-NEET paranoid Rache Bartmoss who is so against THE MAN that nobody knows whether he's alive or not.

Seriously, the basic system was nice enough once you stripped out the shit that made everyone go for full body conversion and FNFF was a decent combat system, but the world was shit. Thank fuck there were worldbooks for Hardwired and When Gravity Fails if you didn't want to do your own setting.

And I haven't even touched Cybergeneration yet.

Yeah, I think so. Never once have I said to myself "Man, I wish this was more linear like the old games" when I remember being stuck in an invisible wall filled swamp in TW1 and everything in TW2 being pretty shit after Flotsam.

This format works well, and feels like it actually has enough content to justify it. Feels like a more natural open world, like how it was appropriate for Grand Theft Auto, not like MGS5 where it seems like it was open world just to be open world.
