Actually, you do. You have needed deployment 100% to survive the final Mortal Revolution in a4s and the J Storm in a8s. Gear + this upcoming 20% for aspected helios is the only thing that is going to allow noct AST to serve a function SCH has done flawlessly since HW launch.

What does AST really have to offer? Well their base shields will now all be stronger now. You can move and cast aoes with Light Speed, and you can instant cast single target shields. And then you have your RNG card stuff which has its own myriad of problems. And disable, which is pretty alright.
The fact is, Noct AST doesn't have tools that synergize well with WHM. The only synergy it has is shielding, which is really the only 1 to 1 function it shares with SCH. Otherwise what does it have? It has its cards, and it has higher base healing skills on demand (helios, benefic II), and those things are not valuable in a healing duo.

The virus point isn't as poignant as AST has disable. Disable ends up being technically stronger and on a shorter CD, can effect darkness damage, but only lasts for 6 seconds, while virus ends up being roughly 3% weaker, cannot affect darkness damage, cannot be chained with other viruses (anymore RIP), but lasts significantly longer making it much more valuable for a series of hits.

Actually, I have cleared anything. There is no darkness damage in a7s, I assume you mean a8s? The Darkness damage you experience in A8s are Bioarithmetics, J Kick, J Storm, J Wave, I believe. The only one I would want to use disable on is J Storm, because it's pretty beastly. I'd rather save my CD on tank hits instead of J Kicks (in which case virus is better, because you can mitigate flarethrower, punch, flarethrower with proper timing, impossible with disable). You can use disable to mitigate 1 J Wave, that's pretty okay.

Yeah, and it's fine when you can stay still. A lot of the time where I use SS in a8s as SCH though, I want to put down my SS while the boss is finishing up their rotation and immediately go into a succor cast. It's not that bad though I guess? My biggest problem is the wind up time, and you can only get the shield up early by dropping every thing you're doing which I HATE. The regen would be pretty nice after J Kicks though.

It's not the fairy, it's that fact that AST's kit is incomplete. They did all this card bullshit and assumed it was sufficient to make AST a quality healer when it's not. If they had just made Synastry like Beacon of Light then a lot of the sustained healing and fairy problems wouldn't be a problem. OR if they had actually connected cards to healing, like I dunno, make your Ewer/Spire also be an instant cast aoe, and your Balance/Bole a personal divine seal instead of tacking that onto synastry.
SCH is perfect. WHM is perfect. AST is the problem and it's going to be really sad if they continue to just do bandaid solutions to their baby AST until they have to hurt the other jobs to achieve parity rather than actually FIXING AST.

SCH can deploy a 300 potency shield. That's it, just saying that SCH has surpassed AST's capabilities. However, in order to get through J Storm you'll be deploying off of a WAR with Defiance (+20% healing) and Convalescence (+20% healing) for a (300 + (300 * .2)) + (300 * .2) = 420 (blaze it) potency shield.
What is AST's option? Aspected Helios, which is in noct sect is a 150 potency heal, giving a 150 + 20% shield after Tuesday's patch. Noct sect also gives a natural 5% healing bonus. With Synastry you can add 20% more.
This gives your party a...
((150 + (150 *.05)) + (150 * .20)) + (150 * .2)) = 217.5 shield.
In a realistic scenario that’s a 4800 vs. 2500 shield at ilvl 240.

All I can think of is something like tanks having their own actual DPS modes, becoming a DPS role etc. DRK actually sacrificing HP for massive damage, SMN can become a tank with Titan-Egi with more skills to support this, single-target-oriented and AoE-oriented SMN, WHM becoming a DPS and having skills like Quake or Tornado, AST becoming a support DPS etc.
Would be a gamebreaking change, but I doubt they'll do something like it though.

J Storm does about 19000 damage with 10% mitigation from bubble and 10% mitigation from Storm’s path
Plugging in the numbers:
A deployed adlo with WAR buffs (not including fairy heal buff or dissipation mind you):
Defiance (+20% healing) and Convalescence (+20% healing) for a (2900 + (2900 * .2)) + (2900 * .2) = 4060 shield.
An aspected helios WITHOUT the upcoming buff with with Synastry (+20%) up, noct +5% healing already included in base number:
1500 + (1500 * .2) = 1800 shield.
SCH:
19000 - 4060 = 14940 final damage
AST:
19000 - 1800 (shield) = 17200 final damage
In EM’s world first clear, their SCH got dropped down to 1185 HP. No one sac’d. The only way AST stands a CHANCE against such moves is with disable. Assuming disable CAN be up for the ability and lasts long enough in scenarios where the boss jumps for the big moves or goes untargetable, which funnily enough have been a8s and a4s.

The problem with disable is that it is only 6 seconds, and the introduction of darkness damage as being largely unmitigateable or at least difficult to mitigate is a thing. If SE doesn't want it mitigated they might change how it works, but they have also been doing stuff like making bosses untargetable or jump for these big hits which makes it even harder to do these things. It's not out of the realm of possibility that they never intended for J Storm to be able to be mitigated by disable, as mortal revolution before was not mitigateable by disable. The point being is that it's managed to work out only in 50% of big hit scenarios in these raids so far, and what if that was just a luck of game design and not foresight on part of the dev team. It's a huge concern when your only hope of surviving this hit is through either a tank LB or your AST getting a 6 second debuff up before the boss jumps away. If he stayed away for J Kick for two seconds longer it would be impossible to hit with disable, beause he jumps away for 4 seconds before crashing back down for the damage.
THIS IS NOT OKAY. If disable were 10-100000000 seconds that would be a totally different story.

Gil sellers saturated the economy with billions of excess gil on each server. SE's response to this was to create gil sinks. By creating gil sinks, SE catered to the gil sellers' market via creating a demand of massive amounts of gil.

AST's problems in Nocturnal Sect are pretty bad right now, but I think they'd be better off balancing the game 'down' to Nocturnal Sect than balancing it 'up' until Nocturnal AST can go toe-to-toe with Scholar.

you can play any tank, it really isn't hard
however, optimising for damage is something that differentiates the tanks and while i don't know much about them i think WAR is the go-to aggression tank
in my experience, PLD is the easiest tank with the least things to worry about and becomes pretty comfy, but until level 40 aggro can be a nuisance, and the other 2 tanks don't have aggro issues at all afaik
but if you're looking for just plain and simple tanking, all of them are pretty simple to do and tanks rarely get difficult mechanics
