There was the same problem with waifus.
A theme is meant to restrict the possibilities in order to give direction. Something as broad as "have a cute girl/character" or "have a queen" or "have it be lewd", like these shitty Ludum Dares about "You Are The Monster/Villain" and whatever, it's cosmetic and meaningless. It imposes nothing.
And if your theme imposes nothing, then it's not a good theme.
>>
Lewd is obviously going to win because most of the people who browse this general are not interesting in game development.

I say we make our own serious gamejam and ignore the failure waiting to happen that is lewd jam.

It's Unity.

The planet is the base - it's just a low-poly approximation of a sphere. I wrote a custom PRNG based on Mersenne twister for this. The textures for the planet are based on perlin noise, with a randomly generated gradient that tries to pick colours that look "nice" together.

Then there's an atmosphere layer which uses random colours but mixes them with white so they're paler than the surface of the planet. They also have random alpha which is used with alpha testing to create the "clouds".

The rings are created like atmosphere, they have a basic 1D texture with alpha to create "gaps". The clouds and the rings have a chance of not being created for more variety.

>>144347354
Yeah I thought about more noticeable atmosphere but it ends up hiding the surface of the planet. I could make it appear only on the edges, maybe.

It's for a Star Trek sort of party-based exploration game I'm trying to create.

Poll anon here again who posted all these polls (I said I was leaving but not just yet).

I think Lewd Jam should just be erased if too many people are against it. The argument of making your game lewd no matter the topic is correct and so far as the sub poll showed here : http://poal.me/idgj71 no one really gave anything worth while to make it work.

Either way, this is just my opinion. As stated earlier >>144346885 we should let the polls roll for a while longer as it's only been a few hours. NEXT THREAD, if people are up for it, I shall make ANOTHER POLL with only the top choices people seem to want and erase the less desired/trolls choices; this time without allowing to add new Jam ideas.
>>
>>144346686

What I did was just started making games. You just gotta do it. Joining some jams could help, or even just looking at old ludum dare themes and making a game based on those themes. Your first games will suck, but you'll learn as you go. The community is helpful too, if you ever get stuck ask on the godot subreddit, or the Q&A site, or the IRC.

Why do people get so opinionated on a jam theme, like it's going to make or break their fucking indie rockstar gamedev career if it's "space jam" instead of "queen jam".

Well, you'd have to manage with a limited fuel supply until you can repair some form of generator. Scrappers would occasionally come by to grab functional parts. End goal could be to uncover some plot and/or activate a radio beacon and/or fix an escape pod.

Oh. So that's not shader? Just a texture you're offsetting? Looks nice.

I think the small clouds might make it look weird with how everything there i nearest neighbor, having the light pop in wouldn't be that nice. So do bilinear or something to determine the fade ok?

shooting now goes through a real weapon class. any ship can support an arbitrary number of weapons. projectiles themselves already have their own fun behavior sets (e.g. additional effects if destroying a unit)

going to have to do a custom collision setup next. i don't need complex physics interactions outside of a case-by-case basis, and in fact probably want to avoid them to ensure the necessary level of determinism + predictable player controls for a rail shooter. unfortunately, bypassing unity physics means bypassing unity collision. whatever. it shouldn't be too hard to get my own thing

Is there like a simulated 4chan or Skype where I can make it look like someone else is replying to me so I can pretend someone else is there?

So I got a question.

When designing a rhythm game, is it more important to design a track/"level" around the music and make sure the notes flow together ina fun way, or should you focus on creating a fun track then design the music around your track/level?

Yeah I think space jam with something set up to help people collab on it if they want.

Part of me really likes the idea of blind pairing, or random teams of 3.

But also an open thing where you rate yourself like 1-5 on art, programming, etc. and try to get a small team or partnership set up

I should program a matrix of 32 by 32 pixels to randomly choose a pixel color from the NES palette for every pixel in the matrix. Each version of this matrix gets uploaded to the internet and gets reviewed by a bunch of poor indians. If the matrix looks like it is representing something (not random noise) and actually looks good, I have a new asset for my game.

Is this a good idea, /agdg/?

I think this whole poll shitshow wasn't as bad as people might want to think, it brought up a couple of positive points :

1) Lewd Jam is not a good idea, people should be free to make their game lewd if they wish to. On top of that, a lewd game is a lot of work, which somewhat defeat the purpose of a Jam.

2) Waifu Jam clones aka Queen Jam and such are bound to be as successful if not less than our previous Waifu Jam. We should wait a couple months before even thinking of doing such a Jam again.

3) Collab as a Jam option could be interesting, especially when applied to /agdg/. Someone brought up the "you had to pair with someone at school for certain assignments" point which I believe here could turn out interesting and fun. It'd be a great way to solidify the community, or simple make it possible for people to meet partners and grow from the experience.

I agree with this >>144372004. Although I'm already working on my game and plan on staying 1M for it I think I'd like to give a try to a collab Jam for the fun of it as an artist.

I'm not mocking your idea but you do realize just saying "Queen Jam" is as descriptive as saying "Waifu Jam"? If you do like your Queen Jam idea then develop it more and propose it again next time. Or simply make your own Queen game.

The goal of a Jam is to present a clear concept people can make in a short amount of time. Your idea sounds too serious for a Jam.

it seems just as descriptive as any other option on the poll
i didn't take it as mockery, dont worry
if people perceived queen jam as a waifu jam replicate then thats my mistake for portraying it but i believe there is fun in giving the dev a theme such as water, space or .. queen. and leaving it up to the imagination as opposed to spelling out what they have to do. with more freedom of creativity you are able to have more fun with it (in my opinion)

as for the "you can make your own queen game" thing, that is applicable to anything in the poll but the fun part is making a game with the anons and seeing how your queen game looks with another persons totally unique queen game (again, in my opinion)

>>
>>144373179
Fair enough. Well Queen Jam lost fairly either way, it's not like I deleted it out of spite. Try again next time while shilling it in a more appealing way.

I think /agdg/ needed the Outer Space Jam (or Water, or Stealth) after what happened with the Waifu one - a change of pace, if you follow me, something more "common".

>>144373951
People keep saying I was manipulating this whole thing for Outer Space but I was actually rooting for Underwater. I don't mind Outer Space though. As for the idea of doing a full Collab Jam, don't you agree that trying out the collab thing now by making it optional could be a good way to see how things go before attempting a full one? It's not like we can't make a Collab Jam next time if this one right now goes well. As said above >>144372324 I believe there's a lot of potential.
>>
>>144373923

i think if someone steps up and is the email guy then everyone can email him the following
>their skills rate
>previous experience with making games
>a short name/pseudonym(acceptable) so that when email senpai posts the list of groups in the the agdg thread, you can check the board and see that name and know which group you are in
>contact info (skype, steam, whatever you're willing to give) so that your team mates can get in contact

heres how it would be decided (its probably not a huge job since there aren't too many people doing the jam)
>if you are strong, experienced your pairing will reflect that (in email, you could specifiy whether you would mind working with less experienced users)
>groups may consist of combinations such as 2 strong and experienced users OR 3 varyingly less experienced (with one member who is moderate or strong to pick up the slack and teach their teammates)

this system im proposing is just spit balling but do you think it could work

>late comers can be constantly added either to existing groups or they can wait until another late comer comes and then be paired with them

The general store is open for business! You can now buy stuff from the shop. This interface is easily expansible, too, so I can do different shops with different items on offer very easily.

Also made it so when you sell something the inventory slot goes away instead of just being invisible and leaving a hole behind.

I have decided to take the initiative and make the groups based on stats you guys give me.

if you want to collaborate on this jam, email me at
[email protected]
answering the following questions:

>what is an original (appropriate) name that i can refer to you as when i post the list of groups?

>What is your area of expertise and skill level?
briefly describe what you are good at in game deving/what you can do. preferably rate yourself honestly on these skills so I can place you with a suited group.

>what experience do you have making games?

>What are your ambitions with this jam?
are you going to be spending day and night working crazy to make something super awesome? do you have work/school and cant garuntee your availability? tell me all this :P

>Are you willing to work with less experienced devs? more experienced?
are you willing to be a leader for your group and work with some possibly less experienced devs or would you absolutely require someone veteran? Tell me and ill see what i can do (this is hard to guarantee.

>Your contact info
please leave as much as you are willing for your group members to contact you and arrange a group chat for the collab.

that should be everything..
this is designed for you all to have fun working together on this. try to work together with your team mates and make something great!

i will post the list of groups (of either 2 or 3 members) after a period of time (how long should this be?). upon posting the list, i will email you with the contact info of your group members and let you guys arrange the group chat. Late comers are welcome after but aren't guaranteed a spot unless a group is willing to work with them or another late comer comes along.

>What engine do you work on?
I use Love2D for quick little 2D games. I've done a little bit with id Tech 2. Otherwise I do my own stuff with C and SDL2/OpenGL.

Vim for programming. Krita or GIMP for art. The rare time I decide to try my hand at making shitty music I usually use MilkyTracker because it's the only thing I somewhat know how to use.
>>

Alright faggot I'll help you out. Let's assume an orbit is circular (it's actually elliptical but you can easily find an ellipse equation)

The equation for a circle is (x – h)^2 + (y – k)^2 = r^2

Say you want planet 1 to have a circular orbit around planet 2. Well set planet 1's position to an order pair (x,y) such that it satisfies the circle equation and
h = x coordinate of planet 2
k = y coordinate of planet 2
r = the orbit's radius

Now just like make game

Probably ease up on it. Good on ya for taking it on but /agdg/ traffic is all over, different people at different times, plus people who want to collab might be considering what they want to do or making a throwaway email or whatever else.

I'd imagine it's probably fine to start with C#, but I'm the wrong person to answer the question of how to learn C# as an absolute beginner programmer.

If you want to get in to making games right away, you could consider learning something simple like Lua with Love or something. Or maybe even use GameMaker's scripting language to start out with.

There are probably some really solid books for beginner programmers based around C# though, so if your end goal is Unity/C# you might as well get one of those. I just don't know which one to recommend.

>>144378378
C is an imperative procedural language. It's much simpler (in terms of features built in, etc.) than the other two, and it's relatively low-level. It was for awhile something of the lingua franca in game development, but has mostly fallen out of favor for C++ in professional studios now.

C++ is currently the industry standard. It's much more complicated than C in terms of features. It's also OOP. Pretty much everyone[citation needed] thinks it's garbage, even people who use it, but it's clearly here to stay. Some people say you should learn C before C++ if you're planning on learning C++, but the way C++ is used in modern applications is completely different to the way you use C, so I'd argue it would be counterproductive to do that.

C# is somewhere between C++ and Java. It has a much more sanely implemented OOP system, and is somewhat higher level than C++. There's no reason to learn C or C++ before C#.

>>Why C# over C or C++ though?
C# has some programmer niceties like garbage collection (which is not without its negatives, especially in game development), and it's a much more coherently designed language than C++ is.

The main reason to choose C# over C/C++ for game dev would be the tooling you want to use. Unity uses C#, as does Monogame which are both fairly popular choices for amateurs.

C++ is fine if you know what you're doing. It takes a while to learn all the ins and outs. It's much easier to make mistakes, write crashing code, or cause memory leaks. That said, once you've been doing it a few years, it's not that big of a deal, and most big gaming-type projects use shared pointers anyway which makes it pretty similar to most modern languages these days. C++11 has made some huge leaps with things like foreach and auto typing which makes it a bit more bearable.

That said, it is like 30 years old and it kind of shows in a lot of areas (but that also means it has tons and tons of support - almost any question you could ask is on stack overflow).

Each codefag gets assigned the artfag that posted below him, repeat for musicfags. That way all the groups will be random, the rest of the organization is up to them, we don't need to spoonfed anyone on that.

Food,
Give them the choice to pick a thing as-is, or let it ripen on the vine and come back later

Stone, judge the rock to find the right angle to hit it at to create a fracture

Wood, pick the right tree and right felling angle so it doesn't get caught on the others on the way down, also make your axe chops correctly so it falls where you want

A bunch of minigames I guess

Simple but non-annoying QTE's (or minigames) that effect outcome of actions (ex. when mining ore; do well you get more ore, fail and you get alot less or damage your pickaxe). (Like Gears of Wars "active reload")
To add to above maybe just make it like a rhythm game.
Encourage exploration, if the player searches they can find areas with lots of rare resources.
Maybe have some platforming and simple puzzles (cut down tree to make bridge to get across canyon/crevasse).
Let the player build conveyor systems and shit to speed up gathering.
Skill tree/crafting/tech upgrades (Not fun, but at least helps give player a sense of progression)

Really fun idea but man what a clusterfuck that would be. Too many grouches for that to be realistic right now. I'm actually swayed now about collab optional/mandatory, I agree it should be mandatory. Obviously not to be in the thread, but to submit to the jam you have to collab. I think it will make people relax about collabing, since it's just part of this jam's rules.
>>
>>144386754
That'd be a clusterfuck for sure but I'd love to try it out eventually.
>>
>>144385041
Ah that makes sense. Guess I just forgot to take personal preference into account.

>>144384679
Hah that's really cool. Planets killing planets sounds like a great idea. Though for the moon thing, I reckon it'd be pretty mad if the moon while still being affected by the sun like you have there, would fling off in the direction it was going before the planet was destroyed. And also can moons crash into planets?
>>
>>144386754
We can't even get more than 7 1MAs to finish a game in time.
All the "waiting for a collab" nodevs are going to lower that number, not raise it. The reason they're waiting for a collab is because they're never going to do anything.

You're not really holding any argument right now. Just being contrarian and negative for the sake of it. Negative people like you are fucking useless.

A global collab would make it possible for even the most shitty nodev from agdg to contribute by drawing the sprite of a chair or a vase and have his name at the end of the credit roll. A global collab would imply everyone would need to register/apply or something (via the agdg website for example), thus having a temporary name, and contribute.

This would be a lot of fun I'm sure. We'd just need to agree to a genre/idea per advance. Hell we could even do this for Outer Space Jam if people are up for it, that or wait for the next one.

The concept you're proposing, in this environment, is just going to be the vision of a single person, who isn't even guaranteed to finish, with a bunch of lackluster sprites hamfisted in. And the idea of forced collaboration is just going to result in an higher than usual amount of dropped projects because all the posters who say they are waiting for a collab will realize that's not the reason they weren't devving.

Feel free to prove me wrong on this, but I think that for you to think the way that you are thinking, you couldn't have possible ever made a game.

I mean. Stop and think about it for a moment : "People on /agdg/ teaming up to make progress."
You don't see what's wrong about that statement?
>>
>>144388506
This. We can't even team up enough to properly discuss gamedev and post progress.
>>
>>144386887
Not exactly sure how it should work. Might be better to have it fling off - but then there is little chance of another planet hitting it.

And yeah the code is there, I suppose a gravity cannon could make a planet heavier, and cause the moon to crash?

I want to have a whole bunch of options for killing planets, not just lasers vs rockets, and some troll options would be great i.e. building a mirror to stop sunlight hitting the planet, causing no food = slow death.

We really don't discuss gamedev. Nothing in any depth. Its a series of one-off questions that are either too broad (how should i start learning c#?) or about specific bugs. Sometimes artfags ask us which design we like better. But as for game mechanics, maximum depth is a sentence or two.

In fact Googem even posted a fairly comprehensive critique of Steams practices, and it got all of like two replies. Agdg is not the bastion of original thought we want it to be, its just another ADD meme pit most of the time. Even our celebrated Demo Days, you might get as few as two or three plays. This is just a gamedev-themed place to hang out.
>>
>>144389152
I'm not negative, that's why I still post content
Doesn't change the fact that I get almost 0 responses even though I post new content and development.

I'm not negative at all, I don't ~really~ care that much if I get feedback here. What I care about is making a game that'll make some dosh, which I'm 100% convinced this game will be successful at.
>>
>>144389990
So what? Because it didn't get replies it means it didn't exist? If it only got one meme reply means you didn't reply to it right? Why not Anon? Why are you negative instead of constructive?

>>144390351
Because just because I'm doing it for the purpose of money doesn't mean that I'm not having any fun doing it, and it doesn't mean that I'm not still interested in the community.

Heck, the reason that I'm making a moneygrab game is to later fund a game that I really want to make
>>
>>144390212
Not him but your whole "because you're negative" is bullshit. When I posted progress back then I was always positive, even when the thread was going down because of some individuals.

The truth is, it's not about being positive but about having cute arts. With some very rare exceptions, chances are if you don't have something visually nice your progress will be ignored in here, period.
>>
>>144390351
I don't think that's a fair point you made.

It's completely fine to be here to make money. Only a loser would say otherwise.

The problem is is that he's so negative about every post he says rather than adding to the content of the thread. I usually try to balance shitters out by posting progress. I'd post some, but I'm a hour~ away from getting my next feature done.
>>
>>144389990
>dev discussion that got only one meme reply
i'm used to this. it's because my arguments are so well sourced and logically sound that the debate is ended with a majority of readers no doubt silently accepting my arguments.

So a person that instead of contributing to what he believes is good, takes a screenshot to complain later is not a negative person? By the situation he described he either wrote a meme reply or nothing.

It does suck to be left out of agdg group art because my game has no main character to waifu or lewd on

Hey ZeroQuest dev

I've been thinking about your game a lot today, and pondering your microgame dilemma

The idea of you scrapping them entirely just doesn't sit well with me, because I thought some of them were really well done.

Yeah, the platformer jump can be done more effectively and fluidly in the overworld, and the cursor identifying game was kind of lame, but Things like the DDR attack, shooting game, and maze were all actually pretty quick and engaging to me.

Just thought you should know

It was obviously a lie if you stop and think about it for a moment seriously.

The only real agdg artists I remember sharing cute girls are catmouth in his real early build and crystal gun girl for a something angel jam game.

hi im that anon that made the carrot cake girl
do u want usable free art

Late, but here's how I do it.
1 room only. A parent object obj_menu_parent includes an array of strings for each option (e.g. option[0] = "Begin"; option[1] = "Quit"). A max_option variable tracks down the array's max size. Another (current_option) tracks the selected option (here, 0 or 1).
In step, check keyboard_pressed for up and down and increment/decrement current option, making it loop from max_option to 0 and the other way around.
Draw event automatically draws and spaces out the options, highlighting the currently selected one.

Pressing enter triggers an event_user(current_option). Now, here's the trick: Every menu I have (including the in-game Pause menu) is an object with obj_menu_parent as its parent, different options in its create event, and a unique piece of code in every user event.
Finally, if I need to indicate an option (example: difficulty) I can just make some shitty extra strings variable and make the "difficulty" option in the array cycle through these strings.

Not sure it's the most efficient option, but it's certainly better than having a room for every menu. Hope it helped!
