Host it on a local server if you can. A lot of the progression is time gated (AE2, especially) so just letting it run and poking at it every so often to make sure it's all running smoothly is your best bet.

Giving a quick shill for MC+, because being able to have actual horse and carts is kinda neat. You can also carry them yourself. Movement as it follows you isn't 100% smooth, but seems to work fine.
The whole thing is a bunch of micro-mods that only add a couple of small things each - so you can install what you want from it.

>inb4 HUD clutter - I turn off the minimap and waila half the time so it feels less cheaty
SAO UI is nice mostly for the health bar, even if it does mess up some other HUD elements from other mods

According to thread and testing: chest, ender chest, furnace and jukebox. Also some mobs if you leash them in. No trapped chest though.
R-click to couple/decouple it to yourself, or if you're on a horse, it will connect to that. Shift+click to open/access. Can be pulled up 1 block slopes fine - but won't do so well on mountains.
Looks like it crashes if it's still coupled to you and trying to teleport? to you from ~8 blocks away though a wall or something.

Update: cart is vanished after restart. If you want something more reliable that does the same thing, the Utility Mobs chest golem might better. Carts might be nice for established routes/paths though.

In Minecraft there haven't been many instances of malware in mods, I don't know how much sandboxing is necessary.

I know in Garry's Mod it was a big problem... and those mods were in Lua. I think the thing that causes that to be an issue is having clients auto-download shit from servers.

>>
>>144314707
>how many ticking entities can you have around you without everything breaking?
I have not even begun to design entityshit, except I know I'm going to do something minimalist for physics (entities AABB collide against the world and ignore eachother) so outlook is good.

Did you mean Tile Entities?

Metatiles will be efficient as fuck compared to Minecraft's Tile Entities because you won't have to iterate through every fucking Metatile loaded currently to look-up the MT associated with a point (yes, that's how Minecraft does it, fuck).

>how many subparts are your base blocks made of?

Still thinking about that, since I have yet to concretely decide on an artstyle.

Engine-wise a chisels-and-bits-esque detail layer will certainly be supported - even easy. The engine is designed explicitly to make adding extra layers of associated voxel information to the world require very little extra coding. I fully intend to do SOME variation of that but, as I said, that depends on what I want the artstyle to be.

I'll probably experiment with various sizes of detail layer stuff to see what looks good.

With regards to a sparse voxel octree type of dealie I probably won't use one, since other people report lots of problems getting sparse voxel octree engines to run efficiently.

I think the best way to pull off a mod like this is to raise the sea level and adjust the rest accordingly.

The build limit is 256, but the ground is mostly around 64, and even less under oceans, and at their highest the mountains barely reach the 126 clouds.

You could bring the sea level up to like 84 or something and have some extra room to shove things in underground

Again, if the behavior in a coremod is generalized as an API hook the coremod is no longer needed.

This would be true if Lex and his buttbuddies were adding functionality to their API, but they aren't, so that just proves their retardation. If Forge wasn't run by that autistic orangutan, it'd go
>modder develops feature for his mod that requires coremodding
>doesn't want to limit his playerbase, so asks Forge to help him implement hooks his mod can use, now along with anyone else who develops a similar feature
>everyone works together, Forge hook is merged with added functionality, everyone is happy

I thought the reason for coremods was to edit the classes in the core game.
>>
>>144383723
>Just because a modder uses a coremod doesn't mean that they defend that coremods should exist.

Coremods should exist. They shouldn't be overused. That's a key difference.

Right now, coremods are overused. For example, AppleCore is a coremod which provides hooks for controlling player hunger simply because Forge doesn't do it. This should be in Forge, but isn't. This is an example of a coremod that shouldn't exist, as this is generic functionality that all mods could benefit from.

As a different example, Factorization's Hammer engine lets you have entities which are chunks from another world inside the main world. It requires about eight? ASM hooks, and they are very specific for this purpose. This is an example of a coremod which should exist - it does something which is specific to one mod.

For a different example, OpenComputers has a coremod which doesn't even modify Minecraft. It modifies mods annotating their tile entities with @SimpleComponent to fill in NBT read/write methods with data used for storing the component network for computers. That's a clearly legitimate use, as otherwise mods would have to include an extra 30-40 lines of code just to support OpenComputers.

>>144359498
I agree, except that not everything should be in Forge, because needless complexity creates bloat. Everything should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

>>144358519
>on the forge forums
Remember when the entire moderation team of the Forge forums was banned because they spoke out against Lex during the NOVA drama? If you want to meet modders, try IRC.

>>144356467
Coremods are harder to maintain and it's not trivial to always write a patch which doesn't break when another mod patches the same spot. It's still better than base class edits, though.

>TE is dead
KingLemming confirmed yesterday on his Twitter he may release a 1.9 TE.

a drama which was entirely because lex misunderstood what was going on and wanted to basically break forge in response. assie was quick to kiss ass with that.

this is the thing with forge. it's beyond salvage because it's entirely in the hands of someone whose response to anything they don't like, whether it's a concern or not, is "I'm gonna break this shit and then we'll see how all you fucks like it! HOW DARE YOU CHALLENGE YOUR GOD?!".

No, Lex offered a reasonably honest-sounding apology and I decided to give him the benefit of doubt and accept it because I felt that nothing good could come out of that particular drama, especially as the only thing we really wanted is to have Forge not crash with Java 8-using classes at the time.

not even lex losing his head/spot?

chaos is the only way to change things
>>
>>144429195
>not even lex losing his head/spot?
That would not happen.

* First of all, there was no incentive for the average player to move away from Forge. 1.7 had a few hundred mods, and any fork of Forge could not legally support them - to run an SRG-obfuscated mod, you need the SRG<->Mojang mappings, which are under a restrictive license and only the official Forge branch has rights to redistribute them. Effectively, every mod would have required at least a recompile - or being run through BON.
* Second, nobody was really willing to make a modding API of Forge's scope at the time. Remember - maintaining a modding API is a lot of effort, and that was before Meddle, MagicMojo or the Bukkit drama.
* Third, Lex cannot lose "head/spot". He owns the Forge project and thus cannot lose his position, merely be replaced - and he's still backed by cpw, fry and AbrarSyed.

Effectively, what would happen at best is a small schism in the community, not unlike the story of Better Than Wolves.
>>
>>144429668
(Well, you *could* technically make your "modding API" a patch on top of Forge using the deobfuscation data it redistributes - but that's no different from a coremod, and you still rely on Forge to distribute the data. Cuchaz allegedly tried to get permission from MCP to distribute the mappings - and failed. FyberOptic maintains his own mappings, but they only cover a fraction of the codebase - the part his mods depend on.)
>>
>>144429830
To summarize, in the real world, modders either contribute to Forge and deal with Lex or make a coremod and don't deal with Lex. Effectively, the only way for Forge to be replaced with something else is if Lex actually removes coremod support - because that would mean modders would be forced to go through Lex for their patches, and a lot of them don't want to. (I'm also pretty sure he's aware of that, and that's why he has never followed through on his plans to either remove coremods or make coremods require to be signed by Forge)

No. The only reason he flipped his shit about NOVA is because we internally coremodded FML to allow Java 8 classes to be loaded by it. It was more like "ANOTHER MOD COREMODS FML AAAAAAAGH WHY WON'T THESE IDIOTS STOP DOING IT I MUST REMOVE COREMODS AND BAN ALL BUILDCRAFT DEVELOPERS". Read the IRC logs - they're public.

>how -ever- did that whole "cross-game modding platform" thing work out. I haven't seen it brought up much lately.
I left in February, the other two devs left a few months later, leaving Calclavia. Later, Calclavia was hired by an educational company, who used NOVA internally as a wrapper for their own toolkit for Minecraft modding in JavaScript - but later scrapped it and wrote their own system for it.

>assie's allergic to drama. but change doesn't happen without it,

It's really a matter of scale, legal issues aren't an issues for most server owners, especially private servers.
However, Consider the bukkit takedowns which still affect most server admins.
Wolvereness wrote code for bukkit under GPLv3, which:
>The provided license requires the use of included or linking code to
provide the original source under the GNU GPL license version 3, or any
later version.
now, bukkit is a modification to the minecraft server provided by mojang, and his code interfaces with mojang's code. To compile it into something usable you need to have mojang's code(in decompiled form or whatever, not necessarily the exact souce code mojang uses.)
However, the license requires providing the source code for minecraft, under a premissive open source license(i. e. mojang would have to open-source the game, which they won't).
In other words, if you want to distribute compiled craftbukkit .jar's you have to distribute the bukkit source code(or a link to it) for said .jars, and for the parts of bukkit that are GPLv3 you also have to provide the source code that it interfaces with it. Wesley Wolfe's parts of the code are GPLv3 and do interface with the Minecraft Server code, so you'd have to provide the source code for that, which only mojang can.

To get around this restriction spigot distributes a script that
a)downloads the spigot source code
b)downloads the minecraft server.jar
c)compiles it into craftbukkut/spigot
i. e. the user downloads a tool, said tool takes a few dozen minutes and then gives you spigot/craftbukkit .jars for you to use.

ComputerCraftEdu has actually helped teach children programming in schools. RedPower 2 probably gave a lot of young Minecraft players valuable lessons in logic gates which might be useful in their future life. A lot of people learned programming after being inspired by Minecraft mods.

Besides, providing entertainment for people to relax after the difficulties of school and work is a contribution in itself.

>Why haven't you contributed to Meddle yet?
>Why haven't you contributed to Meddle yet? Or MagicMojo?

different poster, but I am investigating whether the author of Meddle even wants community support. If he doesn't want the community helping him with Meddle, there is no point in contributing to Meddle. His projects seem like one-man endeavors and I don't see much contribution from other people on his projects. He has ignored a pull request for dynamic mappings since last December which I find strange. I asked in the Meddle project forum topic about it and am awaiting his response. I do think that he actually doesn't mind accepting help though, but I want to confirm it.
>>
>>144447038
I didn't mean contributing to Meddle as in to the mod loader itself. It's just a mod loader; you're supposed to create mods for exposing specific engine functionality. A good example for that is MeddleAPI, but you can probably roll your own.
>>
>>144447038
To elaborate, FyberOptic treats Meddle and co. more as personal and educational projects than grand community projects, but that doesn't mean one can't base off his existing work to create something great - which is something I'm encouraging anyone to try, as, even if it fails, it's a great learning experience. (Just remember to not define your success as "I'll be the grandest modding API for Minecraft on the planet")
>>

I overgeneralized Meddle, my apologies. I wanted to help more with DynamicMappings. I like reverse engineering; used to be a ROM hacker. I will probably help since I like the kind of stuff dynamic mapper does or I will plan my magic mod idea further.

>>
>>144448542
>Metallurgy is just for overpowered TiCon metals, nothing more. :^)
But you need ExtraTiC to even be able to use them as TiC parts, and if you're installing that overpowered piece of shit you're much better off getting rid of Metallurgy altogether and just using Enderium/Signalum parts.
>>
>>144447038
his automatic mappings seem to only be for the latest versions, that would never lead to a stable modding environment. the best solution would be making regular mappings for 1.9.4 and using that for an API on the loader. this is what fyberoptic already did in 1.8 when he made that mcp clone, which was much better than what he's doing now by chasing snapshots, desu.

but this is all a moot point. this whining happens every few months and hardly anyone ever does anything. immibis made a 1.7.10 forge fork but it died. cuchaz and fyberoptic both made their own mappings and loaders in 1.8. and this was all at the height of the anti-lex sentiment of the time. but here we all still are, using forge.

in a week everyone will forget about lex until the next outburst.

So why did so many mods get into 1.6.4 and 1.7.10 and stay there? Was there just a lot of time between mods to give modders time to make them all? or were they just easy versions of the game to mod into? Because I feel like 1.8 has been out for a long time, but there is only one unstable modpack on FTB
>>
>>144452240
1.8 is buggy shit, that's why.
forge was buggy too at the time, iirc.
>>
>>144452240
1.8 had a lot of chaos related to the fact it rewrote the entire rendering engine. Many of the bigger mods are skipping 1.8 and going for 1.9.

>or were they just easy versions of the game to mod into?
Not much harder than existing ones (I'd even argue easier overall, though with a slightly higher early learning curve), and McJty/RainWarrior have made great docs for 1.8/1.9's changes.
>>
>>144452429
I'm not familiar with modders names sadly, what do McJty/RainWarrior make?

Those dimensions are a nice (and much more configurable) alternative for Mystcraft ages, and while they can get pretty expensive that's a better way to balance them than the utter chaos that is Mystcraft (especially if you don't have Big Reactors in your pack).

No reason to use 1.9.4, most mods are on 1.7.10, and with several mods, you can completely emulate 1.8-1.9.

Comfy and fun, yes.

Sort of, yes. I feel DynamicMappings could be made a lot easier to maintain (and a lot easier to grow) by using Eureka's heuristics.

Also, that's neat! I've actually been planning on sitting down and making a little NES homebrew game recently. Maybe I'll take a break from modding and do it.

McJty makes RFTools and Deep Resonance; Rainwarrior makes Forge's 1.8+ render/model code and was brought in after the initial release of 1.8 Forge caused modders to boycott it at large.

Can you guys recommend a dirty pirate launcher that works with forge for 1.7.10? The TeamExtreme ones I find throw up errors about trying to find files that don't actually exist.

Where's the best place to either find a somewhat small server focused on large building projects or people who looking for the same thing I can add to my own server?
>>
>>144502775
Sorry for being annoying, but any suggestions? Itching to play TFC to see how much has been added since 2 years ago.

So is NonSanity secretly AkoTheBuilder?

Voice is the same, they build the same, they progress mods trees the same, they play on servers where saice is on

I bet poor Ako just got tired of the kids subbed to him and used a low-key channel
