How do i into underground tree farming? I want to embark on a super high mountain but it's gonna be rough to start with no trees
What's a better mat for a morning star? Cooper, iron, bronze, or silver?
Uh, a newbie dorf here again.
I'm trying to reinstal the game using Lazy Newb Pack (since I am indeed Lazy and Newb). I want to instal it with latest version (that is 43.03) and the pack itself runs on 42.06.
If I simply copypaste files of 43.03 into the lazy newb pack, game starts like normal in ASCII. If I try to launch with any other graphical mode, then this message pops up.
>>144219539
... and I get problems like on this image. There is no depth of water/lave shown and text is weirdly mixed with tiles.
>>144219725
The depth isn't shown because you haven't set it to be in the init file.
The text seems like it's shown properly. It's "mixed" with tiles because vanilla text uses tiles. Perhaps you're used to using TWBT? If you wan't the text to be pure text, you'll have to use an ASCII-based tileset until TWBT gets updated to the current version.
>>144219437
they're stabby, so iron
Whoa, that is a lot of mountains
Should i create forts with the sole purpose of creating an underground railroad that connects the lowlands?
>>144221218
Figured but I wasn't sure how well their blunt damage was so was considering silver
>>144218936
multiple z-levels are needed now for trees to grow. At least 3 completely cleared z-levels is a good start. begin at the top and then channel your way down... just be sure to let the job finish completely and check the level below is in fact completely filled with rock before starting the next layer channel, otherwise it's easy to breach a cavern or part of your fortress; and cause a cave-in on top of that from an unsupported floor.
>>144222154
>how well their blunt damage was
non-existent
they're basically a shorter spear with more velocity multiplier for easier stabbing through armor
their only blunt attack is bashing with the pommel
>>144222424
Oh okay. One more thing, is silver still shit on edged weapons against anything with armor?
>>144222846
yes
>cavern at level 108 at glacier
Is this normal to discover caverns so early? I've used advanced world generation, but I just turned off bogeymenfor adventure modeand changed start year. Are standard adv. world gen settings so much different from regular world generation? I don't want to have fun right away.Pic unrelated
>>144222846
Why the hell wouldn't it be?
>gen a pocket island with ridiculously many megabeasts and titans, and no required playable faction
>year 1050
>civilised races have been reduced to small bands living in caves
>only remnants of civilisation are the long-lost ruins of a human city and a dwarven fortress
>start out as a stranger in one of the human caves
>turned "reveal history" off, have to learn what happened as I play
It's a special kind of comfy.
>>144224295
I don't know. Just making sure toady didn't change things around before I start making weapons.
>>144220720
How do I reinstal TWBT when it gets updated? I assume it is not on official download page, right?
>>144220720
Could you refrain from posting those kinds of gifs from now on. They make me very uncomfortable.
>>144224734
that's a pretty neat idea especially with the recent changes to adventure mode. might have to try something similar when my fort dies of FPS or boredom
>>144225260
They do? I think they are very fitting on a DF themed general.
>>144228386
Exellent save, friendo!
How do I get fresh water in a glacial embark?
Do I have to pump magma to the surface or?
>>144230284
From caverns? I have plenty there.
Also bump for this question >>144223857
>>144230434
That would work but the only cave I've found was dry. I'm only at layer 90 though, so I'll just keep digging.
>>144230596
I love dry caves, I don't know why, I guess it's just the look of them. opening up a massive, desolate expanse of brown and blood thorns seems far more threatening and alien than the colourful assortment of fungi, water, and fungus trees you get in a normal cavern
What areas can temples be in? I need to topple one and become a warebeast, my right arm got fucked up by some goblin lashers
>>144230596
I found second cavern layer at level 94 >>144223857 and it is flooded like completely, so I think something is wrong with advanced world generation parameters.
>>144231627
I get you exactly. Had a fort myself made much more aesthetic by such a cavern.
>embark on a mirthful creek
>has a waterfall
epitome of comfy
too bad I'm gonna level the entire forest and make a charcoal empire
is there a way to make hostiles friendly with dfhack?
say, make a group of invaders join your fort
>companion kills random goblin who was probably the leader of this town.
>entire town of goblins attacks me on sight
What? Why? Are they just evil or did my companion go mad and fuck me over?
>>144223857
>>144232692
There's nothing wrong or unusual about either of those things.
>>144232692
I've found fully flooded caves plenty of times.
>>144232661
Dwarf forts and human towns. Not sure if elves gobs make them.
>embar at glacier
>"hen was found dead"
>see polar bear near wagon
Well, that's gonna be fun
>>144235540
>It's a "punch this wild animal until we all die of dehydration" episode
>>144235760
Nah, bear just stole some ale and lobsters and ran away.I would do the same actually
>>144235540
you tell me
>>144221968
Are you playing a version with dfhack? You would have to be in order to do that.
Sexy rockbump.
>mfw that time I locked all of my dwarves in a cramped cavern and let them starve to death together as a community
The little babes were choking on miasma and one dwarf survived and I let him out and he wandered around insane and then a new batch of migrants showed up and they were haunted by ghosts.
This time I opened the gates to hell and a single baby survived and I'm watching him crawl around the halls starving to death and the demons are ignoring him and burning furniture instead. This game is fun.
>>144239234
>a couple seasons into a new fort
>scanning the (steeply sloped) surface for anything I missed
>holy shit what kind of rock is THAT, I've never seen that beforeit was a hedgehog walking across a snow tile
WHY YOU SAY ME THE TEMPLE IS HERE??? IT AIN'T HERE! I CHECKED! DON'T SAY ME IT'S HERE WHEN IT AIN'T HERE!
>>144239234
Wrong pic
>>144239234
H-hey guys. You guys like me here r-right?
How can I keep oceans from freezing in temperate biomes? I want to do an ocean embark but I hate that it's frozen for 4 months out of the year, unless I embark on a "warm" ocean which usually doesn't start until I get into the parts of the map which are largely swamp or desert.
In short, is it possible to gen worlds in which the ocean is warmer than the land, so I can choose a less-than-hot ocean embark without having the ocean freeze?
>>144243348
never seen that cut of meat before, but it looks delicious
>>144243956
Yeah, adjust your worldgen temp settings.
>>144243348
>>144244493porkoclase
>>144243587
You make for the prettiest stone to build my fort in sure.
>>144244641
That just makes the whole world warmer (or colder).
>>144245052
Can't get it all. Try to find a more temperate embark that's bordering a warm ocean. It's rare but if you do a big world with a lot of oceans you should nail one.
>>144183585
Originally forts were a place to come explore after they failed, using an adventurer.
>>144201740
This.
Man I don't fucking understand forest retreats. I go up trees where people are that say it's a shopping tree but literally nobody in the tree will trade with me
>>144248059
Market tree?
>>144248403
It says a shopping tree.
>>144248893
Shaping tree.
Lame question, why haven't any human traders visited my fort after 3 years? Iv specifically set up my fort near a human settlement.
>>144251353
In your embark screen neighbor list?
>>144251353
backup your save first, then retire your fort and export data for legends viewer (or just use legends mode, but I find it unwieldy)
the settlement could've been abandoned or taken over by goblins or something
>>144252082
yeah i made sure of it, i had all neighbors but only the elves and dwarfs has visited
>>144252906
make sure to make a dirt road from some map edge to your trade depo
>>144249670
Oh, you're right... maybe I should get glasses
Playing 42.06,
I get a zombie siege, fantastic! I unpause after the notification and they have already walked away?
Right after I get a goblin siege, fantastic!
I unpause and they all leave except 2, who are standing there on the mountain doing nothing.
How do I fix this? I've been training everyone for years, I want to see how my defences fare against the hordes
>>144256594
not a new bug, but still a weird one
how close to the tower and goblin civ did you embark?
>>144257015
>how close to the tower and goblin civ did you embark?
Pretty close to both, did it intentionally.
Aww come on, I'll be really bummed if I can't get sieges. Do you know anything I can do? They're spawning on top of a mountain, but there is a path from that mountain to my gates, I have a bunch of dogs chained near traps, hell, I'm leaving all of my front gates open.
Begone page 10!
>>144259246
There is much do discuss.

It is terrifying.

Man it's rough for a slow game to keep up. Too many new games coming out.
>>144253696
>Grandmaster Spitdwarf
Why is lazy newb pack for pc so slow to update
>>144267728
For the same reason you aren't updating it.
>>144252906
What version are you playing? There's a minimum exported wealth for humans to come trade with you, and there was a bug in a version of .42 that broke exported wealth. Obviously that also means that you'll have to have already traded with elves or dwarves before humans will come.
Also, despite what anon said, building a road to the edge of the embark has no effect on whether or not traders will visit.
>>144268136
I'm not very good at computers. sorry...
>>144263920
Mega Man General somehow manages it.
Why can't anyone just tell me where a fucking vampire is for fucks sake... I don't fucking care about Colossi, titans, giants, or trolls.
JUST TELL ME WHERE A VAMPIRE IS!
>>144268953
We've managed for at least the past week. Some kind anons keep this thread bumped.

>Happy thoughts pertaining to murder
I remember when I first discovered vampires in this game I got super paranoid.
>>144269848
I meant in adventure mode
>>144270304
you could always inflict vampirism on some townsperson. if there isn't a problem, then you can create one to solve it
On the express train to page 3 please.
>>144273091
in the new update can you actually make your own towns and stuff? like have other AI live in it and be the mayor of the town?can you raise your own kingdom and fight massive battles?
>>144274456
I don't think so, I think you're jumping the gun more than a little, but you can establish a site and build a building, which is a pretty huge change
the rest of the stuff you posted will probably come at some point (ie. 2020 or later)
>it's another "enemy kills you while you are completely in cover" episode
ok so what is the purpose of creating a crossbow squad if they function so damn bad?
It's like my 10th Fort and in all of them i have tried endlessly to increase the performance of my archers just to accomplish nothing!
I have finally got some amazing hunters (lvl 10+ marksdwarves) this last migrant wave and managed to set an Archery Range that actually is being used once a month if used at all.
Couple aggresive langurs invading my shit and finally get the chance to use them. They walk straight to the targets, drop their crossbows and start to fucking wrestle the langurs. One of them have drowned in my moat.
How do I bind the Divine power of archery to my will?
>>144279425
make sure they have bolts
but regardless, you really NEED regular melee militia to be between the enemy and the markdwarves. marksdwarves are fucking great, but there's only a few situations where they work alone
>>144279638
My melee militia squad have been doing pretty good in combat despite their lack of sparring and experience.
I actually didn't manage to make them spar one single time in this fort yet and still im almost three years in.
My bowmen however not only they almost never train they never shoot properly in combat.
They have dropped their bows for melee more than three times no idea why.
Hey, checking out Dwarves after a year or so.
Is the lag problem with long-lived fortress games fixed yet? I see that there have been many patches since I last checked.
>>144280038
take a look at their inventory closely. do they have quivers, what's in the quivers, etc.
that's very strange behaviour, I've never seen it, usually at worst they'll start smacking their opponent with the crossbow
>>144279425
>>144280038
Are your military archers still assigned the hunting labor? If so, that's probably more than half your problem.
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=1451
How do you get plump helmet farms set up if most of your embark is stone? I embarked on a volcano which is great for smelting (lost two dwarves sealing the magma channels but these things happen) except I'm having trouble finding a place to set up farms.
>>144280519
They are, thanks!
>>144280578
Just get a stone floor wet once and it becomes farmable ground forever after. Or dig down to the caverns and farm there.
>>144280117
That's a hardware problem m8. Get a better computer.
>>144270304
If you didn't max the vamp curse count you're probably shit out of luck
>>144279425
Hunter/woodcutter/miner uniform conflicts
Likely a lack of sufficient assigned ammo issue. You can shoot up wildlife to get a squad to legend+5 gatling guns in 2 seasons.
>>144281227
>>144281801
Bad computer = lag
Good computer = no lag
For some reason both my DF raws and the fort I'm currently playing in completely lack shields, is this a massive issue?
>>144282083
New to adventure mode and I must ask: when I wield a sword and attempt to attack, why do I punch my opponent rather than use the sword.
Yes, it is drawn.
>>144282476
If you're just move-attacking it makes a random attack from every available attack. Use A to bring up the detailed attack menu.
>>144282152
I guess it depends on how you play. It would a massive issue in one of my forts. Can you make bucklers?
>>144282648
I can't make bucklers, no. How vital are shields in direct combat? Like if armour is good enough will the need for a shield be mitigated? I was considering weaponising the volcano to take care of surface invaders instead
>>144281227
is this a meme answer?
>>144281227
to have a good functioning high FPS for after 300+ dwarves is unrealistic for anything but high-end CPUs mate.
>>144280578
Raised bridge fortification into a water source in the caverns.
Dig out the floor above your farm.
Channel a row, bucket it, channel a row, bucket, repeat. You don't need all that much
>>144279425
Why are you taking photos of your screen?
>>144284367
You mean a raised bridge and fortification, right? They look the same with a 1x1 bridge but aren't of course.
>>144282824
Uh, it's like a 30% block rate. They'll do okay but expect increased casualties.
Use more marksdwarves, inward facing fortifications, flood traps, traps, bridge airlocks with sally port stone doors to break up sieges.
>>144284449
Yeah
So how far can you actually go in adventure mode? Can I explore the entire world or only some of it. The big map stops scrolling the closer I get to the edge and I know this isn't the entire world.
>>144282476
Listen to this anon: >>144282648
Many encounters are currently fought on a non-lethal level(most notably the encounters with subterranean fauna, due to a bug). If you autoattack in those battles, you won't use a weapon. By using a detailed attack to hit them with your weapon, you escalate the conflict level.
>>144282824
Not even the best armor in the game can completely replace a shield. Shields and bucklers stop all damage from a blocked attack. There's no bleed through, no force spreading, no penetration. A sufficiently strong attack will penetrate armor. If you're in full steel, you're safe from most threats, but eventually a goblin with a copper warhammer is going to get enough damage through to break a bone or crush a skull. Archers are going to have enough dakka in their quivers that rng is going to give them attack that pierces a breastplate. Big creatures' unarmed attacks will let damage through. Even if you're covered in adamantine, megabeast sized creatures' attacks will get enough damage through to break bones and explode skulls. And shields/bucklers are the only defense at all against fire breath. Even though I usually have at least a few 2-hand weapon users in each fort, 1-hand + shield is the bread and butter of my militaries because melee combat is otherwise too dangerous without being able to stop attacks.
I would also be concerned about what else is missing from the raws that you haven't realized. There's not a scenario where shields and bucklers being gone is normal, so your install is probably more fucked up than just that.
>>144284495
The block rate is dependant on the skill of the dwarf. A highly skilled shield user will almost never be hit. And fortifications don't have facings.
>>144284890
You can explore the whole world. What big map are you referring to?
>>144285698
The Q map. There's a point where it stops scrolling and I know for a fact it's not the whole world since I started in the center and haven't even reached the arctic at the bottom.
I've just never been out this far before. What happens when I get to the edge? If the map screen that is
>>144284890
>>144286383
That only shows what you've seen.
>>144286383
It's a low resolution map of the whole world that gets more detailed as you travel more. The resolution will never increase, but landscape features and locations will be visible on it as you discover them.
>>144286828
>>144287124
So it'll continue to scroll as I go past the black areas?
Man I've never been alive long enough in adventure mode to even get to the border
>>144282152
Obviously the gods have decreed that your dwarf civ doesn't need shields. Dual-wielding berserker militia only.
Another dwarf civ (if they exist) will have shields, otherwise it's probably an issue from modding your raws. AFAIK shields are meant to always be available.
>>144288107
that art, while cool as fuck, doesnt seem exactly right (if its supposed to be an axedwarf). its more like a slightly short human than a dwarf. legs too long.
>>144288107
Yeah I can't use shields or bucklers in the arena either, seems like raws are fucked. Is reinstalling the safest way to go or should I try finding where they're missing fromt and mod them back in?
>tfw have to wait a month before saving to see my werebeast transformation to find out it's not something retarded
Fucking temple curses.
>>144285304
This. You're totally fine. Just soften and break them up into manageable bits with bridges, locked doors. Then a decent amount of steel dwarves will make it through on armor and parry.
If you want, match the agility class for each squad so they're generally together. That way nobody runs way ahead from being super fast and even if he is the general push forward through a manageable group covers him if he's downed.
>>144285512
build it on the inward facing wall you goober.
>>144268485
late reply but im playing 0.42.05
Whats the wealth limit and if its bugged is there a way to fix this bug?
>>144288438
Even if you add them back in it won't take effect, sorry to say. Civs only use items that they have access to from the start of the world.
>>144288376
Could be a half-breed? Looks fine though. I can't wait to see the next combat re-jig, even though I know it'll be a decade or so away.
I want dual-wielding to be viable.
>>144288443
Doesn't DFHack have a way of finding out? Sounds much less painful.
You're hoping for a wereplatypus, right?
Why the fuck can't you sleep anywhere in adv mode anymore? Does sleeping in caves and lairs to seek refuge from bogeymen count as an "exploit" now? Might as well forbid sleeping inside any building at all.
>>144289604
Well I'm in 43.03 so df hack is out of the question.
Honestly a platypus wouldn't be that bad as long as I don't turn into something without claws, sharp teeth, or high speed I'm good.
>>144289698

I'd be keen to see the ultimate realisation of bogeymen.
>walking through a haunted biome
>incessant cackling
>bogey eyes visible in the darkness
>vanish into smoke before you lay eyes on them
>leave trampled grass and nothing else
>different regions have different types of bogeys
>villagers tell tales and warn travellers of them
>some villagers live in constant fear of bogeys and never travel alone
>some live in peace with small, "mischievous" bogeymen
>>144290074
How the fuck do taverns even work.
It says stuff costs 2... 2 of what? I tried offering coins and settling debts but nothing ever happened.
>>144290245
I think the "spirits" mentioned in the myth talk will COMPLETELY replace the bogeymen. Many of them will be mischievious, and some outright hostile and dangerous, but most of them will probably be harmless, while some might even be helpful. The spirits will, unlike the bogeymen, likely have many ways in which you can interact with them. Perhaps you can use different clever tricks to ward the malicious ones off.

Is there a way to get on the same tile as an enemy and prevent them from getting off the ground?
>>144293469
If an enemy attempts to flee while cornered, they may run through your tile. Other than that, I don't believe there is another way.
As for preventing them from getting off the ground, (A) > wrestle should do the trick.

>>144293973

>>144293587
Jump tackle them, then be where they will when they slide to a stop.
I do this a lot.
So I explored the post-apocalyptic island a bit. While I did find some leather armor and a nice iron spear to replace my copper ditto, I didn't find anything to help me learn about the history of the world. The ruined city and the fortress contained no books whatsoever, and the temple in the city, which once might have had plentiful engravings depicting the city's history, was razed to the ground.
I now suspect that the small band of cave-dwellers I encountered in the beginning was, in fact, the last civilised creatures in the world. Back then, they were friendly, but that's just as long as you encounter them in their base. Now that I'm encountering them out in the wild, we'll have to fight.
I killed one of them as I left the cave for the first time, and recently killed another one which I encountered on my way back to the cave. Now I encountered this mob when I sought shelter for the night. I've spoken with all of them before, but now I'm gonna have to kill them. I think I'm in a similar boat to you. Every single town I come a cross is abandoned. The only living things I have encountered so far are a couple of humans in the mead hall that I started in, and a small pack of Kobolds, of which only 3 are still alive.

GG kid, you got some balls.
>>144298467
After killing the bandits, I went back to the cave, asked to join the band, and then killed their boss as well. I didn't become the new leader, so I guess there was some other bandit hanging around somwhere.
Now that I had become part of a faction, I also became able to claim sites. So I went back to the ruined town and claimed it. It worked, and while it didn't remove the "ruin" status from the town, it DID result in the temple getting restored. However, there doesn't seem to be any historical events depicted on the walls. The only pictures that aren't uninteresting random animal and plant bullshit were, in fact, pictures of my adventurer. I guess restored temples can only get "new" engravings, not restore old ones.
My next step is to explore the catacombs that became uncovered for the first time in centuries when the temple was restored. After that, I'll check if the tavern was restored as well.

I found the room where the coffins were kept, and now I finally got learn a bit about the local history.
Judging from the texts on the memorials, it seems like most of the hist figs were killed during megabeast attacks which occured in the first decade. It must be assumed that it's around this time that the town fell. That means that I actually uncovered the place for the first time in over a millennium.
The main culprits seems to have been a hydra, a cyclops and a blind cave ogre. While I have encountered lots of beasts, I haven't seen those three. I guess it is my duty to track them down and end their reign over this island once and for all. I got some more exploring to do here first, though.
How do I meet this demand? I have several magma forges but there is no option to forge beds under furniture. Is it even possible?
>>144300994
Yes, if one of your dorfs get a mood and happen to pick a bronze bar for the main ingredient.
However, I should point out that there is no penalty for ignoring a demand. The noble will get a bad thought, but he'll get over it soon, and he won't punish any subordinate for it.

the only musical form anyone seems interested in at my fort originates from a goblin civ. what are the chances I'll be able to acquire the associated musical instrument without cheating?
>>144300814
The blind cave ogre will already be dead. They live to 30 max.
>>144309932
To get an instrument from a goblin civ you would need to take an adventurer to one of their sites. The gobs won't send you a caravan, and no other civ's caravans will carry their instruments. You might luck into a strange mood producing the appropriate instrument. I've never seen a mood make a nonnative instrument but it's probably possible.
>>144310183
that's what I figured, cheers. it's too bad, there are no goblin visitors at all so I assume the form has become popular among humans and dwarves, but I guess the transfer of knowledge on building civ-specific items is probably going to have to wait quite some time

>>144320705
yeah it wont work. get a fresh fancy new bone. perhaps your companion is willing to lend you one?
>>144320906
I know that. Fortifications don't have facing, projectiles and liquids pass through them from every direction but below. Walls similarly don't have a facing. They're impassable by creatures, liquids and projectiles from every direction. Calling a fortification or a wall "inward facing" doesn't mean anything, and implies a misunderstanding of the game mechanics.
>>144320906
I guess I end up shattering people's bones when I kill them.
>>144319028
Interesting.
What's a good pure wrestling build? I'd like to see wrestling for what it is worth.
>>144322378
Super strong and super good at wrestling? Size is very important, and the main reason why vanilla adventurers seldom get good at taking down large creatures with wrestling. Play as a giant or bronze collossus, if you've modded thos to be playable.
>>144322378
Pretty much the same as any other combat oriented build, just without shield user. Unless you plan on tackling some dragons, in which case you'll still want a shield.
So basically, high strength, agility, toughness, endurance, and maybe willpower. Your skills should be the standard fare combat spread with wrestling instead of a weapon, and a few points set aside for whatever else you might want. Wrestling is brokenly easy to train though, just set your combat prefs to close combat and bump attack weak critters until you're exhausted.

Toady went on vampire bug fixing spree in early .42, and I think he fixed most instances of that. The only remaining instances of improper vamp identification that I'm aware of are visitors and a line in the needs text on the thoughts and prefs screen.
>>144321853
"Inward facing" presumably refers to putting them in a position which requires the enemy to walk past ("into" the fort) before the marksdwarfs can see them and open fire. This forces the enemy to get very close before the marksdwarfs open fire, although I don't actually know if accuracy is affected by range in fort mode.
I don't know if anyone does actually every does that, but it is (or was, I don't feel like checking) an example defence design on the wiki so many rookies have probably seen it.
This mysterious grate-destroying creature is getting annoying . . .
>>144326734
I think you're being generous with that interpretation. "Inward facing fortifications" is one of those perrennial meme-wrongs that pops up now and then and won't die for whatever reason. Like weapon attachment preventing you from changing equipment, or butcher shops only finding corpses in refuse piles, or needing to assign boots and gauntlets twice in a uniform, or werebeast migrants, or dwarves needing to drink water to survive, or weapons that do piercing damage, etc etc etc. While what you described is sensible use of fortifications, I don't see how anyone would infer that meaning from the words "inward facing", or how you could extend that generous interpretation to a wall.
I've been away from the game for several years, the wiki makes it sound like demonic fortresses are out, being replaced by "underworld spires" which it says are only available in adventurer mode (I'm assuming because they occur in Goblin sites and therefore can't be embarked on). What happened to demonic fortresses?

I will never understand the need or desire to mod in this kind of shit to DF, or really any game.
>>144351743
It looks like an old version of DF, but keep in mind that now:
- Siegers who can jump WILL jump over 1-tile wide gaps to where they want to go, that includes over a lava moat. Make the moat 2 tiles wide to prevent that.
- Seigers and others can climb both trees and walls, and jump down from them into your walled off areas. Building material on constructions also matters, with blocks (or smoothed natural stone walls) being basically impossible to climb. Walls should be 2 levels high, made out of blocks, and trees should never come close to having branches over or near the wall. If you want to be really secure, put an overhanging floor on top of the wall.
do Mushroom Trees from 2&3 Cavern layers start growing in the first cavern layers once you mine into them?

as with most adventurers, you're probably better off starting with animals. the first cavern layer is usually pretty good, you can smash troglodyte and mole dog heads in.
from my limited advmode wrestling experience, sneaking up on people confers a similarly huge advantage to doing so when using a weapon
I'm so lucky to have captured a heard of 5 Giant Elephants but holy shit they take forever to domesticate. Don't. Trust me, just don't.
If you must, go find a Cave (next world you gen, turn on show cave entrances). Then go down into the cave as an adventure.
Congratulations you'll be trapped in a place where you can't see shit, where you can't autotravel or rest, and where almost nothing happens.
>>144365796
You'll never tame them, you'll have to settle for taming the next generation. The best you can hope for with the first gen is a higher training level. It takes 10 years for an elephant to become an adult, so you've got a long wait before you get a tame herd.
And you'd better be training up a military, because war animals, even giant elephants, aren't going to beat a siege. Metal weapons shred unarmored flesh like... well, like metal weapons shredding flesh.
>>144374134
set up a rudimentary outpost in fort mode first. that way you have a nearby supply of food and water.
>>144365796
If you want to use war animals as an effective counter to sieges, you're going to need those modded war animals with barding, period.
Just make a hall of traps.
>>144374854

>>144375657
>Are you sure it takes that long? I already got skillfully trained and well trained elephants after 1 merchant cycle.
"tame" and "trained" are different things
you can only get fully tame creatures by training baby creatures. their kids will be tame by default (I think)
>>144375768
someone told me 10x10 would be enough to feed all 5 of them but i haven't tested it out
>>144376014
>their kids will be tame by default (I think)
The babies came out as semi-wild so i sold them. But dam this is going to be hard then i thought if thats the case
>>144376205
How much did you get for them?
>>144376329
Dwarfs gave me around 2000 for all 4 of them.
>>144376014
They won't be tame by default, they'll be born with training level of the mother. Then one training session will raise them to tame.
>>144375657
I'm sure. You can't tame wild caught adult animals, and you can peek into the raws (or just read the wiki) yourself to see how long it takes for them to become adults. The ones you have aren't useless, you can war train them and use them in battle right now, and your trainers will keep them from going wild provided they aren't too busy with other tasks. That shouldn't be an issue, because training is a pretty high priority task. But don't plan on them being the primary defense for your fort. 5 of them won't make much difference at all in a real battle. War animals of any kind are best used en masse as support for skilled melee squads or as meat shields for archers. If you just send them out to fight a siege for you you're going be disappointed when they're dead in 20 seconds and all you've got to show for it is a few goblin archers whose quivers are lighter. And you won't even be able to use their corpses thanks to an old bug.
>>144279425
is your archer squad set to training?
>>144377091
>They won't be tame by default, they'll be born with training level of the mother. Then one training session will raise them to tame.

>>144383359
he certainly wouldn't half-ass it, but magic isn't real and thus hard to mechanically imagine. all the civilizations toddy designed at least have roots in reality - which supplies a lot more depth and sublety that any fiction.
as i'm typing this i'm trying to think of how toady would implement magic and what it could do. i'm thinking now of somatic and verbal components and i think that would be a very rewarding system, if the player and NPCs had to gesture wildly while talking to cast a spell. IMO that'd make even a simple fireball spell all the more rewarding to figure out and then cast; but then -as usual- players would circumvent this with techniques eg macros.
still learning new somatic or verbal ingredients from books left by demons or great mages would be astounding

Item #: 3128
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3128 is to be guarded by no less than twenty (20) plainclothes guards, under the guise of a vein of highly radioactive material.
Description: SCP-3128 is a mineral of unknown composition. At all times, SCP-3128 emits a distinct white glow, that has been determined to be harmless.
SCP-3128's primary anomalous effect is activated when a sentient being under 1.5 metres in height attempts to damage it. The creature (hereafter referred to as the subject) will fall into a strange mood and begin exhibiting signs of kleptomania and obsessive compulsive disorder. Left to their own devices, subjects will attempt to create mundane objects, which are invariably described as "masterwork" by viewers.
If the subject is unable to find the materials for a desired construction within six (6) months, they will undergo another dramatic change in personality. There are four possible outcomes:
Personality A
Subject will become clinically depressed and refuse to eat or drink. Subject will proceed to self-terminate at the first available opportunity.
Personality B
The subject will remove all clothing and proceed to speak in an as yet, undeciphered language. As in personality A, the subject will refuse to eat or drink.
Personality C
Unlike all other options, in this case the subject will simply fall into a coma.
Personality D
The most dangerous variation. Afflicted subjects will attempt to violently terminate any sentient life it comes across and will not stop until the subject has died.
>>144387670
I think that's usually for citizens, when they're thirsty but somehow incapacitated
I haven't been tracking it closely but it does seem to be happening more often since the tavern update, so I assume it's to do with people who get knocked out in bar fights or pass out due to drinking
Those people get up pretty much right away, so you just get one notification of a cancelled job, as opposed to a real injury where you'd see that job cancellation announcement spammed over and over

>>144387670
>>144388112
If you don't have hospitalized dwarves or babies then that's almost always caused by a dwarf being thirsty for a while before they finish a job. Happens a lot when you're dumping/hauling stone, but sometimes it can even be triggered by thirsty dwarves who are sleeping. It's probably not intended, but it's hard to tell for sure. There's a bug report about it.

Post apocalyptic anon again. I grew tired and deleted the world I posted about earlier. However, I've reworked my worldgen settings a bit, allowing me create more interesting post apocalyptic worlds.
The major changes were the following:
>remove bogeys
Because the world is dangerous enough even without them. Also, seeking refuge is a pain when there are almost no settlements.
>remove demons
Because this will guarantee a 100% gobbo free world. Goblin civs almost never die, and it's a pain to deal with their annoying sites.
>no revealed historical events
Because it's funner to discover them yourself.
>>144395749
>remove bogeys
but bogeys only spawn near active civs or sites
>>144395957
I think you're confusing them with something else. Bogeymen are completely detached from the rest of the world and its history. They only appear in adventure mode, and the only deciding factor for they're appearance is whether you have a roof over your head, in which case they won't appear. Beaches and mountains are safe, but that's about it. I'm also not sure, but I think adventurer camps might be safe, regardless of whether you're in- or outdoors.
>>144396254

Nice. Seems I'm not the only one with a not-shit computer.
How can I keep custom profession names in embark profiles? They always reset after loading them again.
How old were you when you realised that you could fill a backpack with empty bags in order to get a ridiculously high carrying capacity?
It won't make the items weight less, but if you have the strength to carry them, you don't have to worry about room in your backpack.
>You see a goblin hammerman!
>You lock his left hand with your left hand!

I LOVE WRESTLING.
>>144408051
I realized this with barrels, then later bags, around the time 40.xx came out.
Just fought off a vile force of darkness with my bronze equipped military.
Overall it was an outstanding military success. The invaders were either killed or captured.
However, two brave dwarves lost their lives during this engagement.
The first, Geshudshetbeth the crossbow dwarf, drowned in the fortress moat after being thrown off the drawbridge by a troll.
The second, Lalnish the sword-master, perished by slight more mysterious circumstances. There is no trace of his corpse on the battlefield nor in the moats. Furthermore there is no mention of him fighting in the combat logs and there are no announcements pertaining to his status.
What the fuck could have happened to him?
>>144408281
Was he crushed by a bridge?
>>144408143
How long does it take to get this strong?
>>144408281
Are you sure he/she actually went to the battle? Have you checked both the unit list and the "deceased/missing" list?
If he doesn't show up in the combat logs, he might just have fallen victim to the "teleport through wall while sparring and falling into watery doom" bug. Show us your barracks.
>>144408584
I started as a demigod with superior strength, agility, toughness, and above average endurance. I set wrestling to master, dodging to adequate, and reading to novice.
This was the third fight I've gotten into. My first fight was a goblin axeman that I gouged the eyes out of then punched to death as he missed me then I kicked a bunch of keas into trees before meeting the hammerman.
So.. basically right from the get go.
>>144408393
>>144408639
He is listed as missing
>>144408584
I should note that since then I've improved my swimming which has taken the superior skills to superdwarven levels, and last night I tried wrestling a blind cave ogre which resulted in my death.
So I think I definitely need a secondary skill like throwing to weaken opponents who are larger than I am.
>>144408969
my bets in descending order:
1. Crushed by a bridge.
2. Dodged into the water and drowned

>>144408143
I knew wrestling was the truest form of combat when strangling wolves with each arm was more efficient than trying to hit them. It was too fucking funny when I first realized randomly punching people will start a fist fight rather than a fight to the death.
The poor goblins sacrificed by my wrestling experiments though, blinding them, breaking all their limbs then watching them fall over again and again while throwing up.
What other games let you get intimate like this
>>144408051

>>144410336
It's pretty fucking great.
I set a goal of killing a bandit group of goblins that had taken residence in an old drinking mound in a dwarven hamlet near my fortress.

I don't know if it still works as of 0.40, but at least back in 0.31, you were able to make special speech files and have creatures use them when they performed certain interactions. Theoretically, you could mod in an interaction where you shoot razors(although you can't shoot items, sadly, so something else will have to do) from your fingertips while shouting "pshh, nothin personel kid".

>What are some good looking font packs?
>>144419613
>Is there a way to dredge surface soil and make an underground farm
the simplest way is to flood and then drain stone, which leaves a layer of mud. the mud will slowly disappear over time, but as I recall you get at least a few years of farming per flood
you could do a complicated cave-in to bring dirt down lower, but it would be a pain in the ass and would likely result in dead dwarves if you weren't very careful
>I'm having difficulty managing stockpiles
I'd recommend creating more, smaller stockpiles and limiting which types of things are allowed in each
I could help more if you were more specific with what the problem was

The thickness of clothes increases in proportion to the size of the creature they were tailored for.
Big creatures wear big clothes. Big clothes are also thick. Thick clothes withstand attacks better, especially if said attacks come from a smaller creature.

Could be fun.
Are sieges and ambushes still ultra rare in this version? I remember when toady implemented traveling armies and my fortresses would get like a fourth as many sieges and the ones I did get were small and weak, and I kind of stopped playing because of it
>>144436407
Is it that time of year again already?
>>144437178
It has improved since implementation but the underlying issue is still there. Expect a siege in year 2/3 generally. Difficulty varies wildly depending on your local goblins.
In general the game is much easier.
Has the starter kit been updated for the newest version of dorfort? haven't played in a while.
>>144437178
Sieges are back to (often) pre-world activation levels. You still have to embark at a sensible location and produce enough wealth to provoke attacks. There's even an init option now to cap the number of invaders, and a sufficiently wealthy fort near a large goblin pop can consistently reach any arbitrarily large cap you want to set. Goblin ambushes still don't happen, though, so you won't get attacked before 80 pop or during offseasons.

Failing what?
I don't know of any that adds orcs specifically, but the fortress defense mod probably still exists. But sieges have never been a significant source difficulty in df anyway, unless you count spending a whole season hauling body parts and troll fur thongs as difficulty. I get the appeal of having as much text-based ultraviolence in your forts as possible, but there's not a lot short of going to the circus that will make the military aspect of the game difficult. There are even ways to cheese that if you're inclined to do so.

3 growers is retarded. Take 1 or none. 2 masons is retarded, replace one with an engraver, architect, mechanic or soldier. Bring a cook and/or brewer. Bring an armorer and a weaponsmith, they can have any other nonmoodable labor.

we've hit the cavern layer, all before finding a single layer of sedimentary stone , which probably means we'll have to rely on magma equipment
curiously, it seems as if there isn't a single soul on this glacier besides us.
in the meantime, i have a mason churning out obsidian blocks, in hopes that i can utilize that volcano for magma smelters and forges
...but i also wonder if they'll freeze to death if they work out there. they're on the surface of the glacier, but also near hot magma. i don't know how that will work out.
the first migrant wave has arrived

..hmm. guess the magma smelters will have to wait

Every year is usually better
using one of our mostly useless planters, we'll test and see if they'll freeze to death doing the work outside
still no farm as to speak of, but plant gathering is being surprisingly effective right now.
i have no idea how long that will last, however.
usually, i am attacked early on by some cave creature, costing a few lives
i plan to reduce the risk by developing the military as soon as possible
also on my to-do list is to secure a water source that's not muddy

happy first birthday, you horrible mistake
with that, my turn's over
hopefully the framework i have provided is usable
things to note:
-it'd be a good idea to get liquid water that isn't muddy
-the cavern is sealed off (and with it, the hematite veins) and for good reason
-2 sets of iron armor exist and a third is one its way
let me zip this file up and upload it somewhere

>this motherlode of blocks

Alright step 1: Build cages. step 2: contain GCS and recover our bedrooms and possibly save the sleeping miner who is having a bad time. step 3: start military training and finish building industry.
>>144468382
And the moment I unpaused the Queen of all dwarven-kind has ascended.
This is especially grim now that I have my hands on it and can think about it. The first two migrant waves are hardcoded. They have already come. There are no other dwarves outside our fortress.
We have already lost two and sixteen remain. One is trapped with a GCS.
And we have no arable soil and our plump helmet supply is extinguished.
>>144468726
Well things aren't so grim. The plan has been revised. Remove the walls blocking the caverns and wall off a portion of them. Begin farming immediately before the booze runs out. Simultaneously we will work on capturing the GCS which should be relatively easy since it's penned in a very small area.
>>144468726
plus you have to make her a real nice room...
worst come worst, you can always hope for petitioning visitors
So is the succession fort running on the newest update? I'd like to try a hand at it but I've never played without the rapist
>>144469420
Yes, and Rapist updated its memory layouts a week ago. Here is my copy of it. http://a.pomf.cat/adfwks.rar
Quick last update before I get down to brass tacks and right this fortress.
Mechanisms for cage traps are being created. A wall is being built in the caverns to fence it off and afford a growing area. It is meticulously placed where the rock ceiling ends so nothing flies in. Later on super-constructions can be made to tame the caverns but now we just have to focus on the immediate goals of securing booze production and removing unwanted visitors from the premises.
>>144468975
Attracting wanted visitors is a primary goal and hopefully we can convince some humans to join the fortress. If goblins arrive I"m killing them on the doorstep and dumping their bodies in magma.
>>144256594
I don't know but I have hoid that forces crossing the map now actually have to cross the map and they may enter the player's territory and exit again. So maybe they were not coming to seige you maybe they were on their way to somewhere else.
>>144470263
Don't kill goblins if they are mercenaries, let them die roaming the caverns.
already back to bugfixing
Queen already wants shit. And not good shit.
Elves are here. We have no appraisers. We will tentatively trade what we can spare to get some appraisal skill going.
The cavern is walled off. Plump helmets have been planted. Cage traps are being constructed now and the bedrooms have already been sealed to guide the spider into the traps.
>>144470536
"maybe"
>>144470684

>>144470456

He said there would be one more bugfixing push, that doesn't mean one more patch.
>get ahead of myself
>didn't notice the second cage wasn't loaded
>that badass dwarf was loading the trap as the spider came at him
Alright so this is going in the Queens throne room until a much later point when we can afford to spend time on a GCS farm.
- Farms are set up and crops are growing
- GCS is taken care of
- A danger burrow is in place
- Gold is being mined to make furniture for said queen because we are a long way from legendary engraver bulking room value.

Standard response, (rescue current demonstrator and then) rebuild the wall BUT designate two feint-construction walls on the bad side of it and pause their construction. In the version I am playing, construction dwarves do not want to stand on imaginary pipe-dream construction plans so they stand on the other side, right? When that wall is built just cancel the two feint-construction orders and they are gone.
Or did you know that and there is more going on than I have reached.
>>144478582
Here you go. I just made some purchases from a human caravan to further safety net food so we don't have to think about that again.
>>144478585
I have been growing the maximum amount possible. When I received the fort there were no farms and no plump helmets. When the farms were built the fortress had 6Alcohols and simultaneously doubled in population from a migrant wave.
It's been a struggle to turn things over fast enough but it's now done.
Oh and good news (for a change). Old Iteb prayed hard enough and the bite wasn't infected.

Don't fuck up turn order. Turns are spring to spring. That's how succession forts work. Start giving away the save in the middle of a turn and soon no one knows when the save is supposed to be handed off. It's normal for a turn taker to have the save for days at a time, even DF NEETs have lives.

Well, I took a peek around the world in adventurer mode, that's a nice interesting spot you set it at, lots of traffic from the gobs around there, I checked out both of the sacked forts, found a FB in one, but the world feels so... empty since it wasn't done for adventure mode.
I was gonna check out the layout of the fort but it crashes me every time I try, so for the record: don't try to enter the fort with an adventurer.
How are you guys passing off the succession fort?
Could minecarts filled with magma fired off ramps be used as a magma spewing cannon?
Has anyone tried this and posted results?
>>144497613
Yes.
Yes, but not here recently.
Don't fire them off ramps though, slam them into a wall and the contents of the cart get ejected onto the layer above the wall.
That's what I built the wall for in this .gif beside the bandit camp, then I came over to the side to finish off the survivors, though I was just hucking water at them rather than magma.

It's an awful mess.
Just now, /dfg/ died.
The fortress resumes where I left off before uploading it.
Upcoming challenges to aim for completion before the end of year 2 and my turn:
Mayors Office
Militia Equipment
Management and equipment of beds
Further reorganization of fortress into a higher efficiency model
Congratulations to Sakzul Kadolrithar on being elected to mayor. Believe it or not he's not a useless bum. He's one of the engravers that have been tagged to only engrave 24/7.
So far nothing of note, just more management churn. The Queen wants another traction bench and we could really use a hospital. It's time to pull dwarves off engraving to dig one out.
>>144508749
>>144510417
>blows apart
How fast was that elf going?
>>144510512
It was a silver minecart full of crap slamming into them, so, it don't matter much how fast they're going, there's chunks everywhere.
Once I stopped "accidentally" killing them with the minecarts and just began bashing skulls with the silver one I got dozens yielding to me.
Right of way: acquired.
>>144510043
Winter has come.
I've made a mistake while drinking my morning coffee and built the hospital backwards. I meant to dig out hospital rooms and instead dug out their walls. Whoops.
In better news, we now have 80 beds for our 53 dwarves and they are all equipped with real authentic wooden beds.
The militia is training, the brewers are brewing, the smelters.. well they aren't smelting because we have 100+ bars of iron and gold for fucks sake. But everyone is toiling away happily.
Oh look a visitor!
Militia en route.
As work continues on the mayors area we are greeted with another visitor. Fortunately I hadn't finished opening up the cavern yet. It was a very narrow thing.
With our militia comprised of 5 dabbling axedwarves, this would have been an ugly ugly sight.
>>144511664
Why are you digging that deep already?
We're getting double teamed.
>>144511996
1. Tundra year round no water or growing on surface
2. No soil.
The entire militia has decided to pray instead of attack.
Hopefully their gods answer.
>>144512212
The cyclops was a big bitch. It destroyed a trade depot and door then climbed into the fortress from the volcano.
Four dwarves were killed before the militia stopped praying and took to battle.
The cyclops was killed but at a steep cost of skilled laborers.
>>144512370
A Gorlak has visited us and maimed our dogs.

>>144513235
It'll be your turn pretty soon. It's Obsidian 15th which means this final month of winter is half over.
It's a shame I never got to build a proper dining hall but I have met the goals I set out to reach.
Can catsplosions still happen. If yes, is there a way to stop it without murdering every cat around. As it is, I can still prevent it, but not for long.
And just as I place a golden statue to cap off the memorial hall adjacent to the crypt, the year ends.
Here is the save file http://a.pomf.cat/tgpzus.rar
It's been a good year. Two werecreature attacks, two megabeasts, a goblin thief, all three civilizations visited and traded. We've stabilized the food and drink stockpiles, expanded the bedrooms, created a rudimentary military and increased our fortress value tenfold.
Now it's time for the next brave dorf to take over.
>>144513768

The old technique of course, was to keep a limited stock of females and just ignore the males. When those one or two females add up
in years, tolerate a new fem kitten to make the equation with the plentiful toms.
Besides that control the population much as you do for other animals - desperate times lead to desperate measures.
Or, there is some variable in the raws that might be able to change the set level of pet populations which I think is 50? Can that be set to 12, I don't know.
>>144533593
>chubby little penguin
And in those three words, Toady's adjective system redeems itself.
>>144521038
I have a DF topic mentally called "insertion and extraction" just about getting a dwarf in and/or out of a limited walled area. My approach consists mostly of having plenty of masons. Build a little space like a 2X2 or a 2X3 next to a controlled area such as a group of strange aliens in your Trade Depot. A handy nearby mason can put up a wall and take one down, controlling the extraction or insertion of the select few dwarves you want in and out of there.
Often we have seen that foreigners that arrive in the guise of merchants turn out to be berserk attackers after four to six months, it's a pity and their pack animals are delicious.
I came in like a thief in the night and left with souls instead of valuables then left following the sunrise out of goblin town.
>>144535658
It's genuinely not bad since it can give you some useful info on who you're talking to.
>>144535924

But it rarely rolls off the tongue.
>>144536285
compared to most other text-related things in DF, I'd say it does roll off the tongue. sort of
Goblins caught up to me while I slept and there was a brief battle. I slew a crossbowgoblin and escaped with my life. After crossing a small frozen lake I've arrived at what was at one point a human town. If it remains a human town I will be lucky. If those symbols that look like blocks that are usually signifying small towers in dark pits are to be trusted, the humans have long since left and I will not find friends here.

One of the things I like best about adv mode is scoping out good locations for fortresses.
There is this massive expanse between a human hamlet and NOTHING, then a desert, then mountains, then finally on the other side of the mountains there are dwarves.
A fortress on the eastern side to attract goblin attacks and give travelers a rest before the bogeymen come out is a good thing.

>>144542543
the lag sucks but not half as bad as my own fortresses and I am willing to deal with those.
>half way across my mountaineering "shortcut"
>sun is rising
>sleep for 8 hours now that the threat of night creatures have passed
>wake up to a charging yeti
the hits don't stop.
>>144542770
It takes a shit ton of time. You also need the instrument used in the musical performance or else you'll only get singing.
>>144542423
>butcher my starving work animals

oh no
shows me for starting on an evil glacier
>not 10 tiles after I cross it freezes solid
Close one. I'm 4/6 of the way through these mountains. If I had died I would have been upset.
Also the yeti broke my knee and tore several tendons. I have to crawl the rest of the way. Across the mountains.
Maybe I made a mistake

I wasn't going to, but then three more dwarves died before I could wall the skin off and I didn't want the fort to end so quickly
What's the best / most noob friendly tilepack with clear and nice graphics?
Also what's the one in OP webm?
I'm trying to get back into DF.

>What's the best / most noob friendly tilepack with clear and nice graphics?
There isn't one.
Traveling to the mountainhome was a mistake but at least it has afforded me a really cool view of the world from atop the mountains.
This journey.. I didn't check the date but I have slept 5 times. It's been at least six days. And I was only in a human town for one night.
So far I've spent 90% of this adventure crossing arctic wastes >>144533593 purging goblins >>144535041 or fucking WALKING >>144545851
More like 5% of it was purging goblins and 85% of it was walking.

Since I couldn't find the cavern layers in my 2x2 map, I used reveal and found out instead that my map has no fun spires (or any adamantine). I will just get all my dwarves their military gear like I was planning to and then I am going to retire. Good things came out of this fort, though. The military in this version is much more bug free and I learned the paper industry. Not much fun though, I didn't get a single siege, at most two forgotten beasts, maybe because my "dwarven" civilization is composed solely by filthy goblins, for some reason. The most fun I had was a well I built that got a stuck floodgate and ended up flooding an entire floor of my fort (which luckily had been empty because it was only for stone mining).
Pic related is a cave expansion project. I wanted to grow huge mushrooms but learned they don't grow in channelled stone, so I had to throw water at it. Took a lot longer than anticipated and wasn't worth the effort, damn mushrooms take to long to grow! Next fort I'll open the cave sooner so I can channel in the dirt near the surface instead.
Good old times when I could play a 4x4 map in a computer with half the processing power and get double the FPS.

Adventurer race, dragons are modded to have steel bones, the adventurer race is a dwarf shaped dragon with said steel bones.
It's handy for doing my stupid dwarf tricks being able to skid face first across the ground without dying.
>>144552869
This is the world-gen, it should work fine with dorfs making forts and all: >>144546754
I do have gobs settling glaciers, so I'm not sure if they'll just take over the planet, but hey, what's the harm?

>>144555167
That isn't twbt.
That's what vanilla looks like when you zoom in.
>>144555167
Yo...
What if DF was rewritten in a higher level language other than C?
Is it even written in C++?
What if it was written in a functional language and took complete advantage of multi threading?
being a legendary archer sounded better before I tried it.
>>144556467
the only way to play an archer in adv mode is by constantly sneaking plinking away far from enemies until they pass/bleed out or simply get shot and killed
>>144556992
yeah I think its definitely a "they haven't seen me yet" opener.
which is useful. but so is just sneaking up and lopping off their heads.
how would i go about making a INDIA fort?
I think DF has always had (and continues to have) mixed goals. It is a game, started out as a game, and continues to be a game but it focuses too tightly on 'simulation' without making compromises.
Coins in adventure mode is a perfect example. Each civilization has their own currency and won't take others currency. That's great. But there were money changers in antiquity. There were money changers in the dark ages, and the medieval era and renaissance and there are money changers today.
>>144558663
no soap ever, everyone gets a 1x2 bedroom except the nobles who get 30x30 z level areas to themselves.
>>144558853
excellent, i'll put corpse and refuse stockpile in the main hallway
i'll disable cleaning on all dwarfs
>>144558984
dump the corpses in the drinking water.
call it a sacred religious practice.
>>144558663
don't make it 1:1, abstract it out a bit
the nobles getting fantastic shit and everybody else living in squalor like >>144558853 says is a good start to a caste system; I'd take it one step further and have an under-class of haulers who are restricted to service tunnels underneath the main fort and never interact even with common citizens, who are stripped of all their clothing and sleep in shared dormitories
>>144559115
beat me to it but you've got to make a ganges sector
extra points if you end up dumping actually dangerous shit like forgotten beast extract in there
I guess you could make it a 3/7-deep lake (rather than an actual flowing river) so that you could designate a temple inside it, too
>>144559309
>extra points if you end up dumping actually dangerous shit like forgotten beast extract in there
>implying indian militia will be strong enough to take on a forgotten beast
they'll go into battle with training weapons
>only ever build 1x1 hallways, to simulate overcrowding
>carve the main layer of the fort out of a dirt layer
>either pop a cavern early or temporarily expose it to the sun (so that the dirt layer is grazable), then allow cows to wander freely, only to be used for dairy
>have an elaborate (ideally, mostly automated) minecart system to transport goods around your fort, but allow citizens to cross the tracks at several points
>publicly humiliate homosexual dwarves
it's too bad you can't really do anything appropriate with food, so I guess I'm out of ideas
The year is over, not much happened since my last post, the next hurtle for the fort is the cavern and taking out that FB.

probably because its a 2x2 embark instead of a 4x4 or 3x3
>>144570112
And the reduced number of dwarves
>>144552869
I doubt all of the sources of lag can be debugged.
>I've been fixing bugs for the next release. Work orders won't decrease the number of jobs on identical orders any more, and they should store items properly in locations like libraries without hauling them back and forth over and over. Paper slurries can be stored, and traded masterpieces in containers shouldn't trigger art defacement effects. The weird broken entry shouldn't appear at the end of the stocks list. Stone axes will work in adventure mode again.
>they should store items properly in locations like libraries without hauling them back and forth over and over
thank fuck for that
