Malf is a shit gamemode because if the AI wants to win or 'bone, the ONLY way you can even try to compete is by metagaming hard and jumping the gun at first chance aka doing what you describe.

Because even if it's a vampire, you can still catch them later. The station isn't already doomed the second you take your eyes off of them. Malf is so shittily designed, you don't get the same leeway, because if you don't immediately take every single measure possible, the entire station is already plasma and every door is already shocked and tcomms is already irreparably fucked and every single possible measure you could have taken is already plasma and also exploded.

The idea here is to use the damage+the bleed to apply pressure. 2 AR shots are 40 damage on unarmored targets and everything except for nook op, cap armor and xcom armor has terrible bullet resistance. 40 damage+bleeding out is great, specially if you somehow manage to not die and keep the pressure up.
