Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

Well, hang about in the steam chat, blitzes do happen, which are usually less... sensible than Pbems but not by much, and go far far faster.
>>
>>143598617
Blitzes are really tiresome though
It's more about who gets tired first than whoever played the best since they can last for so long and dominions is hard to play quickly

Stun is merely telling the damage to affect the units Fatigue rather than HP, as well as counting as half for the sake of resistances. So, without explicitly testing, and going on what I've seen happen, yes, it does affect that, but no I'm not certain it doubles it.

>>
>>143621238
Modestly. MA Abysia isn't that bad, and the AI's not smart with heat aura units. Either they don't bring their abysian units and your fire evocations work fine or they do and you can have a giggle as half the enemy army catches fire. Of course, you're new so you may or may not have the needed position and skills to deal with an AI superstack.
>>
>>143621238
You use crossbows.
>>
>>143621907
I thought crossbows would do fuck all against abyssia since they're chiefly heavy-armor troops that often have greatshields.
>>
>>143622091

>>
>>143621238
It's singleplayer, who gives a shit? Marignon crossbows are great so if you just spam them you should be able to overpower retarded AI hordes no problem. And for Marignon infantry

>pikes
indie clearers
>swordsmen
your workhorse, best at killing things
>halberds
eeehhhh, without their defense buff they aren't really worth it. You can mix a few in with your swordsmen for their potential higher damage but don't rely on them for anything
>man-at-arms
his shield is nice for surviving ranged weapons but too expensive to be mainline infantry. Use these guys to distract ranged-heavy armies or if you have lots of crossbows and want to avoid friendly fire casualties

>>
>>143622496
Single player is good for understanding early expansion
>>
>>143622447
Like >>143622496 says it's important not to get too comfortable with how single-player works. It's a good way to understand the basic mechanics of the game and basic stuff like how to expand quickly but when it comes to battles and wars you won't really learn anything from the AI because they don't engage in diplomacy and their battle scripting isn't too good.

Once you're reasonably confident with how a nation works and how to fight and manage your stuff I'd recommend joining a game. It's not too bad, as long as you don't screw up expansion nobody will know you're new and then just don't piss off your neighbors unless you're confident you can stomp them into the dirt.

And the best tip I can give for starting expansion is to hire mercenaries. Even if they get fucked up taking on just one independent territory that's a whole territory for something like maybe 200 gold while preserving your own troops. And aim for barbarians if you have them nearby during expansion. pull your formation back and your crossbows will destroy them no problem.

I think you're worrying too much.

Dominions doesn't have a formal diplomacy system, you don't get dragged to war with your supposed allies if they get attacked. Indeed, the player attacking your "ally" will be happy if you stay out of the conflict, and being attacked, your "ally" won't be in a position to exact revenge for your lack of loyalty. And since Dominions is free-for-all game and there can ultimately only be one victor, most players will understand and not have hard feelings about dishonoured treaties (besides trade, the unwritten house rules kinda oblige you to honour trades to best of your ability).

So, I'm trying to think how to save MA Machaka from being shit. Here are some suggestions:
1) Make baseline shitters slaves (spider clan took over, so that's pretty logical) and make Voices and some commanders taskmasters OR make voices inspirational to warrant their recruitment.
2) Give Machaka palisades and fortresses. Seems sound from both mytho-historical perspective, and gameplay.
3) Make witchdoctors recruitable in forests/forts without labs. This along with 2 will make them spammable and useful in battles (at least somewhat useful) without being too OP (just look at their shit paths). Maybe make them cost 90 dosh, but that's debatable for recruit (almost) anywhere mages.
4) Give sorceresses +1 free path instead of shit 40% chance. Nobody hires those shitty mages anyway because of sorcerers. Also, lower their cost to around 80-85 gold, I guess.
5) Sorcerers and African-American Sorcerers are okay with sum1mod. I think. Still fuckin 180 gold for bad paths, but it's salvageable.
6) Make spider warriors any fort. Yes, the stealth dudes. Nobody hires them because they are cap only, and you want spiders in your cap, but they can be used to raid along with bane spider commanders (or make a new spider warrior commander along with this change, because bane spiders are cap only, and you need to waste a black sorcerer recruitment turn for them; or give that shitty spy priest 10-30 leadership to warrant their recruitment ever). I think that would allow machaka to be played not like a solely Sloth 3 money nation because default machaka only needs resources for its cap only spiders.
7) Maybe make a national banefire dart spell? It fits the nation thematically, and would help shit mages to evospam. Nothing too powerful, just a better banefire dart(s).

Maybe I forgot something. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe to my channel.

Not really. Their hoplites are well-armored, which implies that Machaka's at least moderately advanced technologically.

Well I DID have mage support, but they all got turn one magic dueled.

I maintain that the memebless works surprisingly well. T'ien Ch'i's mages are all cheap and you don't particularly need to mass their generic infantry, so I was recruiting mages every turn and never had a gold problem. The drain kind of hurts early-mid game, but sacreds prop you up for a while and your supercharged expansion allows you to eventually start to catch up in research.

The issue is less that the build itself is bad, and more that I'm bad/inexperienced. Also MAGIC DUEL OP PLS NERF ILLWINTER

It still doesn't count as mage support if they're all dead on the first turn.

You best have an army ten times that size coming up to reinforce my friend, else you are about to get bullied so hard. Maybe next time you'll come back with a quadbless.

Believe me, I've tried it. Don't think you can manage it without taking death scales, and fuck that.

>>143657519
YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH BLESS. And I'm not sure whether the extra scales even help EA TC all that much. Like I said, all your mages are sacred and cheap to begin with and your infantry isn't worth massing. Drain is the only part that kind of hurts.
>>
>>143658513

Against the AI generally SuperCombatants are very effective, and fun too. Try summoning a Siddha and equipping it with a Frost Brand, Vine Shield, Eye Shield, Serpent Kryss, Iron Face, Hydra Skin, Boots of the Messenger, Amulet of Antimagic and Girdle of Might. Script Body Ethereal, Mistform, Mirror Image, Astral Shield, Resist Magic, Attack Rear and send it against a few AI armies.

I've just been playing single player and smashing armies into each other really. Is there some guide to what I should be scripting them to do or is it just a git gud scenario?
>>
>>143694136
Join multiplayer game ASAP. You will learn a lot of shit there, as SP enforces some bad habits like massing shitty troops, not recruiting enough mages, and relying on province defence.
>>
>>143694136
It's kind just a git gud scenario.

I mean, there is a lot of info out there. The problem is that without the context to really solidify that knowledge it's pretty useless. You can gain some of that context from playing singleplayer (6 months, etc etc) but really, speaking from my own experience, my knowledge and skill at the game shot up meteorically when I played my first PBEM. And I'm still learning a lot more in every game than I ever did before. It's a trial by fire thing. You can learn in singleplayer but often there really isn't a need to when just smashing armies into each other is good enough. When that no longer sufficed I found it much easier to look things up and apply the knowledge, plus coming up with my own ideas and trying them out.

It also helps that singleplayer is so damn boring compared to MP.

One additional advantage of playing multiplayer that I think is overlooked a lot is, if you're willing to be an evil steamshitter, getting to chat with other players and having a game in common to discuss makes it a lot easier for you to process very relevant and helpful information. I'll even chat with people that I'm actively fighting against, though to a lesser degree. I love going over big events with the one other person who understands the situation as well as me. I point out their mistakes and they do the same for me.
>>
>>143694549
>relying on province defence
One thing that my time in MP seems to be showing is that province defense can make a difference. Its value is not always commensurate to the money you have to pay for it but when I spend the minimum on PD I sometimes find my neighbors who stack it up in the 20-25 range have a slight strategic advantage in their ability to strike with smaller raiding parties and lighter thugs.

Couldn't they have just made it Autoequip a cursed version of the Flying Ship with a much lower capacity to make a flying transport? What's this stuff about only carrying Air Infantrymen, I just figured that was a fluff justification for a mechanical weakness but I guess not.

Also given the way Dominions commanders can't hold past turn 5 do these things just start ramming the front line the moment they run out of ammo?

What helps is that only one of the between 6 and 16 (though there have been games with as many as 31 players) can win a given game. Losing half a dozen times then winning is actually an above average winrate, it's hard to get despondant about not winning when if you win the one you'll have a great winrate, not that anyone gives a toss about winrates anyway.

Using more than a few points of PD isn't the same thing as relying on it.

Relying on PD is when you assume large amounts of it will be a significant impediment to an enemy invasion, like it is against AI. Against players it'll delay a competent enemy attack a turn at most (outside of a few very embarassing failures), before they roll over it with mage support or a powerful thug.

PD is mainly useful against raiding. If you expect a weak (i.e. can be beaten by 20-30PD reliably) enemy force to move into a province you own next turn, bump up the PD. You usually do more gold of troops in damage than the PD cost, and the PD will stick around with no losses (assuming you won) and force the enemy to commit more on their next try against that province.

Bumping up PD can also help against flying/stealthy raiders, but it's likely an enemy player will have scouts and will avoid provinces with high PD. Putting 20+ PD on every province is just a waste of money, so only use it to shore up provinces which are hard to defend using other methods.

PD can also be useful as emergency blockers for mage support. If you have plenty of mages but not enough troops around (research mages on a flank you weren't expecting an attack from, lost your troops in a fight, etc) PD can buy your mages enough time to summon some blockers and blast the enemy.

Finally, remember to put PD on forts which are under construction, unless you have an army sitting there. Losing forts to random events really sucks.
>>
Are LA R'lyeh any good? They're focus on mages, summoning, spamming freespawn chaff and spreading their corrupting Dominion sounds interesting but also kind of finnicky and awkward.

I'm thinking I might try them out in a game soon with a rainbow pretender if they aren't too retarded.
>>
>>143734046
If you have a reliable way to get rid of extra freespawn, such as an underwater neighbor who doesn't mind you suiciding piles into their PD every turn, they're not half bad. If you're stuck with the UW freespawn, then you're just flat fucked because they cost upkeep.
>>
>>143734046
They're like MA R'lyeh, except your pop dies so your income goes away (and R'lyeh likes gold), and you get freespawn chaff that cost upkeep to take what's left. You're left with popkill gold problems without the ability to make good use of all of your chaff and you don't transition out of using gold for your mages.
>>

>>
I'm extending the turn time to 48 hours because it's getting to that point of the game where there's more going on.
Hopefully this will also help avoid some of the unfortunate stales that have happened.
>>
>>143734207
>>143734328
That chaff problem sounds kind of awkward. My thinking was that luck scales and aggressive expansion could maybe support some good mage-growth and deal with the chaff. Is that viable or would I just get my ass kicked?

If I decide against R'lyeh I'll just end up going Man, which is much simpler, but nowhere near as dank.
>>
>>143735592
The problem isn't just that you can't suicide the aquatic chaff. The problem is that you literally are denied the ability to buy mages and troops on a nation that cannot summon in sufficient quantities to make up for it.
>>
>>143736720
Sounds like I might just go for Man then, R'lyeh sounds too technical for me to work with. And considering that this is for 'LAte_to_the_party' which already has Atlantis in it, competing for the seas would have been too much for me. On land I should stand a much better chance.

For Man should I just Rainbow pretender and Magister Arcane spam?
>>
>>143738616
>And considering that this is for 'LAte_to_the_party' which already has Atlantis in it, competing for the seas would have been too much for me
Atlantis pretty much hard counters R'lyeh anyway
>>
>>143738616
I chose a completely worthless expander because of meme riverlands with meme 3 province start. So now I'm trying to prove LA Man is filled with strong independent old men who don't need no God.

It sure would have been nice though. Looking back, I'd probably take an SC chassis with nature on it, possibly even N9 for Golem thugs, but also to actually be able to use the nature gems you're given without getting lucky/empowering.
>>
>>143738846
A thugged out LA Man sounds interesting and I always like N9. What's a good choice for an awake and ready to kill pretender? My only real knowledge of how to build a fighting pretender is meme-sneks so this is all very interesting for me.
>>
>>143739237
You probably want N9 and scales or awake, rather than both.
>>
>>143739237
For imprisoned N9, take ram-snake or tree. For awake, take boar.
>>
>>143739237
You have the Boar, so taking that N9 Awake is an option (an expensive one, but not impossibly so).

Keep in mind that without Dom9 or high Earth (and you can't afford high Earth with N9) he won't be amazing at expansion. He can handle a lot of provinces still, just don't run him into heavy cav/knights and expect to be impressed.
>>
>>143739563
>>143739636
You can get +5 scales with the Boar N9 Awake by taking Dom5 (not the end of the world with awake, as he'll push your dom enough). That said, I'd still rec something like the Tree, Lord of the Forest, or Ram Snake for better scales, as magister arcane spam is rather gold intensive.

And I know from experience that the tree especially is an unkillable piece of shit.

Order 3 / neutral luck to minimize events, since you're taking Drain 3
Cold 1 can be Heat 1. I prefer moving a temp scale when I need to dump one more.
What really hurts here is the lack of growth, since as >>143739817 says, you really want to max dosh for mages.
>>
>>143739858
You should never have Order 3 with Growth 0, unless you plan one winning the game by around turn 30 (or losing the game by turn 30 I suppose).

Prod 3 is also overkill with an awake. Prod 1 or 2 is perfectly serviceable for expansion, unless you're planning for your god to die immediately.
>>143739838
An awake expander will never kill or even seriously threaten a player. even an N9E2 Boar can run over most indies (excepting large knight/heavy cav provinces). Both die to surprise indy wizards at any rate.
>>
>>143739858
That's a bit like what I'm playing around with right now. How important is magic on a Man pretender? Does N9 really help Boar that much? I'd prefer to go for a higher Dominion if possible.

Or maybe I should just make a dorman/imprisoned tree and go nuts with my scales. I do like the idea of an expanding pig-pretender though.
>>
>>143738846
Are golem thugs that good that its worth giving up so much for them? You could always give them amulets of regen since the only one using your nature gems will be your pretender/Morrigan le Fay if you run Worthy Heroes.
>>
>>143740154
You take N9 for the bless effect, not the boar.

>>143740121 is right again, actually, but you do want O3 for the event reduction. Prod 1 / Growth 2 would be better. Prod 3 + awake is nice early, but unless you just really want to make nothing but defenders you can get by with less.
>>
>>143740154
N9 helps the Boar pretty much fuck all, but is useful for trying to grab Mother Oak, and is somewhat valuable on your sacreds.

The key function of N9 is making shrouds for Golems and Magister Arcanes, as shrouded MA don't die to a light breeze.
>>
>>143740220
>You could always give them amulets of regen
No you can't. They're lifeless.

>>143740254
It's also nice on wardens. Not really worth taking the bless for them alone, but it's pleasant.
>>
>>143740235
Personally, I'd dump temp all the way, and take O3G3P1L1 (L1 opens some really nice events. Nothing critical, just personal preference here This should probably be used on either P2, or making the temp only 2).
>>
>>143740339
Dumping temp all the way reduces your gold by a fair bit.
>>
>>143740220
Golems are thugs without N9. With N9 they can TP into armies scripted the wrong way and shove the whole thing away, or TP into intercept. Or more safely TP into burn gems/let your mageblob avoid t0 RoS.

>>
>>143740425
Dumping a temp scale, on the basis of gold, is less damaging than dumping an Order scale. Growth scales better for income than even Order. Since Order > Temp, and Growth > Order, it stands to reason that Growth > Temp.
>>
>>143740489
Yeah, that's fine. You honestly don't need 8 dom, and it's worth lowering that for even a luck scale.

The other thing you might want is a pretender that can move. A tree is great for being an unkillable fucker, but that only matters when your cap is being stormed, so it doesn't help you win the game. Aanecdotally having a pretender that can claim thrones might.
>>
>>143740489
Really question if the E4 is worth it. Removing it, and dropping down to Dom7, is worth 4 scales that can make you heat neutral, and can pump Luck for nice events with Order.

Or you could do the same N9 with 7 dom, keep temp the same, and run Magic3 (MA do get the research bonus after all).
>>
>>143740489
You could also just make it a Horned One with straight N9, for a mobile SC pretender. Or if sold on the E4, Lord of the Forest is the same price as the Tree sans 1 Domscore, which is totally worth it for the mobility and SC chassis.
>>
>>143740449
There are other ways to provide regen for lifeless apart from N9.

You don't necessarily need regen to beat an enemy army with a golem either. Sufficient defenses should work, depending on the target.
>>
>>143740642
Say that for magic I go N9 then make my scales D8,O3,P3,H1,G3,L3,D3 how does that serve? What can a N9 tree do for me with no other magic? Anything nice?

>>143740770
I also considered Lord of the Forest, do you think he'd do enough in combat to be worth getting him? I'm kind of leaning towards the scrub tactic of pure economy focus right now because I'm still at the stage where planning magic makes my head hurt.
>>
>>143740789
Hellswords and Bone Armor are difficult for Man to craft. There are no other ways to provide regen on lifeless, and both Bone Armor and Hellswords have their limitations.

And while regen isn't needed to beat enemy armies with Golems, it greatly extends what they can deal with.
>>
>>143740770
The tree can cast transform for mobility though, specially if you take luck.
>>
>>143740890
N9 still gives access to nature globals, which are nice. E4 doesn't add a lot that you can't get with national mages.
>>
>>143740956
You say that, but I've seen two feebleminded foul spawn that used to be trees.
>>
>>143740890
Mother Oak casting, can summon a shitton of Vine Ogres I guess. Can eventually summon Ivy Kings for mobile N casters.

The Lord of the Forest, with a frost brand, horned helmet, vine shield, and robe of shadows, can be quite the beast I hear.
>>
>>143741125
Literally no one has ever done that in the history of dota.
>>
>>143740960
>>143741125
I'm thinking tree might be the way to go. Man have decent enough infantry for expansion and with the scales I have in mind I could get a lot of them, with the tree coming in later to back them up with globals and summons.

The plan with Lord of the Forest pimped out with those items sounds kind of interesting but probably too risky for my dumb ass. I'd find a way to get him killed eventually. A big, sturdy tree sounds much more reliable and it makes me think of the old Legend of Zelda trees, which is nice.
>>
>>143741286
Yes, I can confirm that with just Mass Regen the tree is capable of surviving everything Man can throw at it (nationally)

*Laughs maniacally with my gatecleaver quickened Tarts* Finally. Fucking. Finally.
>>
>>143741469
Uh, did you try fire and air elementals?
>>
>>143740960
E4 is nice for the reinvig on shrouded mages though
>>
>>143740937
I wasn't talking about Man specifically, just disagreeing about golems being limited to thugs if you don't take N9.

I think I've made use of them before without N9, and I remember them working well.
>>
>>143741589
I guess? If you're shrouding your mages anyways for better RoS resistance or something that's a nice bonus, but it's not really worth the design points on a chassis that doesn't have E built in.
>>
>>143741469
My tree will last until the end of time, if it doesn't become Pantokrator this cycle it will in the next.

And you seem informed on this so one more question, what's better for Man, H1 or C1? I need one weather scale to round this out and I'm not certain what to pick. I suppose it'll probably just come down to whether I want to occasionally cross rivers or mountains right? I'm kind of leaning towards cold because rivers are a bit more common and more nations tend to benefit from heat overall. Any reason to favor one or the other?
>>
>>143740937
>>143741642
Also, you missed Wraith Sword (doesn't have berserk) and Blood Thorn (one handed), both of which have drain life attacks.

They're still not something Man could easily make, though.
>>
>>143741642
They're fine for being magic phase moving thugs, but N9 is just really amazing on them.
>>
>>143741583
Air elementals were tried, but it's size 6 and therefore cannot be tramped, and even surrounded had too much regen with too much resistance.

Fire elementals were not tried, because Man. a 1/8 chance of F1, with 0 F gem income, is not fire elemental summoning material.
>>
>>143741694
The choice of heat scale should depend on the map. For instance, unless you want to be a memester, you shouldn't take H3 on Riverlands.
>>
>>143741884
You just spam judges until you have D1F1 and make a skull. ezpz
>>
>>143741964
That's 1120 gold (law of averages), still requires some F gems, and is an overall pita. Not worth it to break into fire in that way.

I had a different method to enter high death, but that won't reasonably be available to everyone.
>>
>>143741758
>magic phase moving thugs
I used a few against armies, from what I remember.

Astral Tempest plus stacked defenses to wear the enemy down. Wasn't even using lifedrain items because I was way more of a scrub than I am now.

>>143741964
>make a skull
You can easily get a F1 mage to cast Fire elemental, it just takes a few more gems.

Use a gem to cast phoenix power, then spend two gems to cast fire elemental.

Have had a cursory look, and it looks really cool.

Two minor things, you don't need to specify ReqLab and ReqTemple if the commander already has magic paths above one/is sacred or has priest levels.
Second, if you change the path of the capsites, you can make them look like NOT volcanos (note this doesn't do anything but affect the picture).
>>
>>143746745
>>143748007
Just general-purpose overconfidence in my abilities and strength. Never actually seen a wave of HoS casters roll over my provinces.
>>
>>143751528
Having had more of a look, really is an understatement. Thematic national paths, good levels of power for the undead (unless I missed something).

Couple more points, the mindless undead heal HP without a lab, this could be intentional for a lore reason but it's non-standard for dominions.
Shadow Drain speciefies effect 526, which to my knowledge doesn't exist, not sure exactly what would happen when cast because when testing the mages defaulted to fireballs and killed everything.
>>
>>143734449
Oh hey, I missed that. Feedback time.

First thing I noticed is that pretender choices are pretty sparse. If that's not an intentional balance choice, more options would be really nice.

The Cavaliers don't have a hoof attack. Not sure if intentional or oversight.

Knights could use a small stat increase, in my opinion. It's quite odd seeing a 13 gold unit with 10 attack and defense, even if they have good hp and strength. I'd suggest +1 attack, since they seem to be more offensively focused.

Endless Reavers cause each other to become diseased in combat. They're not immune to disease themselves like undead, so after the first deployment your group of Reavers is going to die of diseases. I'd suggest adding a disease effect on their weapons instead, probably one which is negated by magic resist.

Does this game go on sale often? Was it on summer sale last year?
I tried a pirated copy some time ago and it was pretty fun but no way I'm shelling out 36 dollaridoos for it.

Also do you guys generally play by email or normal one sitting 8 hour games?
>>
>>143755217
Last summer it was 75% off, PBEMs are the norm and there is a dedicated PBEM server, but also shorter one session 'blitzes' do happen which also now have a relatively new dedicated server.
>>
>>143755217
It gets on sale pretty frequently, people ITT almost always post about it.

As for game format, there's a Steam group that mostly play blitzes (although non-anonymous Steam diplomacy PBEM games happen too), and /domg/ plays PBEMs. Most people play both on Steam and /domg/ though. There are also half-dead Desura forums and dom4mods, so pick your poison.

>Hope you guys also have some "beginner only" games where I won't get shat on in 3 turns.
People keep saying we need more beginner only games, but afaik nobody ever makes them.

>How long does a PBEM turn generally take?
Early on, five minutes tops. In lategame it depends entirely on how autistic you are and can range anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours if you're scripting all your mages individually and running battle simulations to test your strategies.

>Also is it once a day?
It usually starts off once per day, but timers are almost always extended to 36 or 48 hours after the first 20 turns or so.
>>
>>143755718
There are noob games, yes. You can create one if you like, there were at least 2-3 guys who were interested in them too.

As for game length and hosting interval, most games last for a few months (1-3), depending on the map size and number of players/victory conditions. In the first 12 or so turns hosting interval is usually set to 24 hours (exceptions are usually big disciple co-op games) because there's not much to do early-game. Later it's increased to 36 or 48. The game admin can set it to whatever he wants if players ask him for a delay for personal reasons.

Most people usually join a few games at once to spend from 15 minutes to 3 hours a day on their turns. There are madmen who play 25 at once, of course, but for a new player it's important to not overextend yourself. Join 1-3 games and see where it takes you.

Can't be too sure yet, your magic management doesn't need to be anywhere near as tight in singleplayer as against other people. Unless you have 90% of the spell tree committed to memory you aren't even close to autistic by Dominions standards.

Of course if you were drawn to Dominions in the first place you're autistic by normal people standards though.

General question about fort-building. Every nation seems to have two levels of forts they can make. Is it recommended to take the cheaper or more expensive one? And before all you assholes say it depends, can you explain how? Like, is the expensive one better for building troops at while the cheaper one is better if you just want to spam mages?
>>
>>143775978
You mostly just want to spam mages and give your thrones an extra turn when they are being sieged, so the less expensive ones.
>>
>>143775978
The more expensive ones take more time to build, but have higher defense. Asside from Palisades falling over in a stiff breeze (in terms of number of siegers required to instabreach), generally you want the cheap one.
>>
>>143775978
the cheaper one. they're more for research /troop massing/protecting temples/thrones.

There is some use to building something that isn't a palisades on a throne/choke point.since palisades are pretty shitty, but keep in mind that they best way to boost your fort's "strength" is to fill it with a shitton of chaff. Call of the Winds, Pack of Wolves, Undead. Zero Upkeep, cheap, and non-mindless are the go to words here.
>>
>>143776528
Hordes of wolves living on exclusively wine are the go-to siege defenders in the world of Dominions.
>>
>>143776528
There is one other reason to buy the more expensive ones, and that's for the Admin % income bonus. This rarely comes up, but if the base income of the province is around 250+ I'd say it's worth it. This typically only occurs on maps with 30k or so farmlands, or whenever you find a double great gold mine province.

It's a corner case, but it does sometimes happen.

>>
>>143775978
It depends, of course.

The cheaper one means you spend less on the fort and get an extra turn of fort recruitment.
The more expensive one can often last a turn longer against a siege that's not overwhelming and gets you more money/resources.

It's a choice between benefits now and benefits way later. Generally, the correct choice is benefits now and thus the cheaper fort. I personally only go for expensive forts when there's absurdly rich provinces or I need something that's not a pile of sticks to hold a chokepoint.

If dominions was a fighting game, the AI would be someone who LITERALLY only knows how to walk forward pressing 'light punch'

Plus difficulty isn't the only issue, you only see CUHRAZY antics in MP. The AI isn't just weak and easy, it's BORING.

To be fair it was pretty close, and Agartha had been making good plays up until that point.

Here is a turn from a game where Ulm killed Mictlan and then threw over 2000 troops into the maw of a Stone Face pretender that he didn't know how to kill, while Tir na n'og backstabbed him into oblivion and then allowed the Stone Face to become an independent gastrolithocracy. Said Stone Face then summoned a dozen assassins and harassed the enemies of the elves.

I find it funny that despite all the talk of mage support some of the strongest nations in the game are strong because their troop/summon lineup is really, really good.
Ermor, Ulm, Agartha, Pan, Ragha all have very competent mages too, of course, but still.
>>
>>143816123
Mages are important, but honestly I've found that if your nation doesn't have the ability to recruit or summon national stuff that packs a punch that you're going to have a serious disadvantage. Arco, for instance, has FANTASTIC mages. The stuff that you can do with a proper suite of mystics is incredible. They struggle immensely in almost every game from the fact that they just can't kill stuff with troops. When everyone has all of the battlefield buffs up, the side that has demon knights or 6 attack/square infantry is going to roll over the little humans.
>>
>>143819040
if you think about it's because at the end of the day it's going to be Army-A who has: WIll of fates, Army of Foo, Fag warriors, Ground army, etc Versus Army-B who has: will of fates, Army of Foo, etc

so I feel you're absolutely right that a nation with great mages that can find a proper substitute for sub-par troops is going to suffer in the long term
>>
>>143819310
It's not a coincidence that a lot of the lower tier nations have human troops, the exception being nations like berytos and bogarus who have crazy mages and blood access. Although I see Marveni has ended up being one of the higher win rate nations for some reason.

>>
>>143827652
>>143828517
Speaking of, I always thought that LA Arco got a bad rap. They have almost 100% magic coverage with their communions when you include Sibyls.
>>
>>143827652
EA Arco is hardly Communion-worthy, unless you're using Mystics as your slaves _and_ your masters, which is a terrible idea for efficiency.
>>
>>143829118
I mean, I guess you could pick up indies to use as slaves, but that's an 'if' and they'll be pretty expensive, comparatively. Plus, mystics aren't sacred, and are often only mediocre as Communion Masters, equivalent to an acolyte in worst-case.

Marverni's got B9 boars. They're not amazing or anything, but they can trade efficiently with other stuff and frontline well for your hundreds of astral mages

>>143830241

>>
>>143830417
Could you please red-pill me on this meme?
>>
>>143830241
You probably want astral, oddly enough, so that you can forge rings of sorcery. You'll end up with a fair few D4 mages, which need 3 boosters or an empowerment to become tart summoners. You might end up empowering some or using artifacts or other ways of getting to tart access, but rings let you spend pearls on tarts too

If you can get GoH, great. It's definitely worth using. If you can't, having just oodles of tart summoners cranking them out will get you tarts that aren't feebleminded eventually, and the ones that are still serve well as evo lures and fear-inducing front liners
>>
>>143830565
already claimed
>>
>>143830570
Tartarian factory. High death summon that gets you a ?7 SC. Getting one out (or more than one) every turn is an end-game goal for most high death nations, and one of the things that makes death one of the best paths.
>>
>>143830723
However to make effective use of tarts GoH and GoR is often necessary.
>>
>>143830947
You do need GoR, but C'tis gets that natively with coatl. GoH is nice, but you can make up for missing it by having just more tart summoners.
>>
>>143830947
GoH and GoR shouldn't be an issue by the time you have a tart factory up, though. Not for most nations, and for nobody if you make sure to branch out and prepare well.
>>
>>143831207
What are GoH and GoR?
>>
>>143830947
Or get the Chalice/Summon Faerie Queens.
>>
>>143831335
Gift of Health - cures afflictions in your dominions and gives bonus health based on your dominion in a province. It's great for Tartarians, because they are almost always afflicted and very often feebleminded, which prevents them from using the magic paths that they would have. Because they're undead, they can't be healed otherwise without artifacts.

GoR is Gift of Reason. It turns regular units into commanders. Many tartarians will come as units, but casting GoR on them will let them use their magic if they're not feebleminded.
>>
>>143831335
Gift of Health, Gift of Reason.

Gift of Reason (GoR) makes a non-commander unit a commander, as Tartarians sometimes come out as units instead of commanders.

Gift of Health (GoH) is an enchantment that cures afflictions and other bad things, which is extremely useful because Tartarians often have awful afflictions or insanity.

Neither is superbly difficult.
>>
>>143831624
>>143831604
Is a high nature/astral pretender a decent idea then?
>>
>>143831121
And how will you make more tart summoners with D4 max.
>>
>>143831409
Faerie Queens have recuperation and disease healer. I don't think they can heal afflictions.
>>
>>143832073
>>143831409
Healers can't heal undead.
>>
>>143831884
High Astral is never a bad idea. It's probably the single most useful path in the game, especially to be high-power in. High nature has the best bless (most of the time) in the game, but if you aren't going to N9 for regeneration, stick with summons and boosts. If you're building a strategy around endgame summons, high astral/death is probably the best way to go.

Remember to never make a pretender with under 4 Astral if you put any points into it.
>>
>>143832073
So they do.
>>
>>143832027
A high death individual can craft more death boosters that can get D4 to D7.

That's what I said.

>>143841916
Considering you aren't taking a bless, you have two options:

1) Take an awake early SC pretender if you aren't confident you can expand well enough in the early game without blessed troops

2) Take imprisoned for better scales and paths for crafting and high-level rituals. Figure out what you want to go for.

Either works.

Tone down the nature, you will need 3 nature at most for easy creation of Jade Masks. Go Imprisoned, you can't do anything with high-level magic by the time he'll be awake, normal mages can craft anything useful by that point. Take more scales.
>>
>>143843042
>>143843216
oh fugg you revised it

More death, more astral, less nature, less dominion. You won't be recruiting sacreds and shouldn't be fighting for dominion - five candles will be the maximum you will ever feasibly need. A point of magic scale would help enormously.

Looks pretty good. Good thinking taking the point of luck away - with order you wouldn't get much use out of it. He seems pretty solid. You've got 14 points, so you should probably give him one extra path of something C'tis can't normally do very well. Other than that, seems ready.

>>
>>143843780
1) Use the inspector.

2) C'Tis gets Water, Astral, Air and Nature naturally. If you ever want to use him in combat Fire gets great crosspaths with Astral and Death. A point of Air would do well, but one point of Earth won't do much good. You kind of need Earth 2 to really get into it. Not that it really matters since you can find indies for earth and air fairly easily.

Nature already increases max by 50% per level. Just empower up. As a bonus, you'll get some nature resistance, some more magical leadership, +2 rp, and a supply bonus.

And anti-aging stuff is supposed to be pretty hard to come by, notable only in a handful of spells (2? Internal Alchemy and the blood one?).

How about you try actually answering me when I send you messages on Steam? How about you come to me personally when you need to talk to me, instead of me having to be told about it from the guy you're claiming is your enemy? How about you stop acting like everyone should be in the general 24/7 when you could have contacted me ingame or through Steam instead? How about you have some faith that I'll honor my deals instead of bitching at me for your own lack of communication skills?

Christ.

And no, I'm not giving anything away by taking this public, since Xibalba told me the whole extent of your plot already. Obviously he knows everything you're planning.

Yes, and for a good reason. Basically, if Doom ever casts revive zombie trooper squad the game will crash. I'm Doom, so I'm not going to do it.

Also, if you open it in the mod inspector, you'll get a lot of wacky shit like 16 earth gem spells for 1004 dwarves, african nation summoning cyberdemons etc. I tested it in the game, and it works as intended, so we're (probably) safe.

Under normal circumstances, I could have waited for the turn to come in to see, but I wasn't certain, especially considering that you did, in fact, log onto steam, get messaged several times by me, take your turn, and then logged off without replying. So yeah, I DID try contacting you through steam, but that wasn't working. In game would have been - and was - too slow.
I do apologize for not seeing your message on steam this morning though, I fell asleep watching LCK games, and didn't bother checking steam before closing out the laptop - for that I'll apologize.

At any rate, I am no longer capable of sending the gems as I've already spent most of them for other preparations.

Actually, here's the code, it basically adds extra undead PD based on death sacles, with a fort counting as +1 death scale.

http://pastebin.com/uts1ERPD

It may need to be scaled back, this was justa first darft to see if it worked. It also needs the PD commander to be given some undead leadership, or to put events for an undead leder in, but there wasn't any undead commanders appropreite in the mod for being thrown in at 5PD 1 death scale.

They're both okay. The main thing is to have a bless that perferably has N9 somewhere in it and as many money scales as you can get, since everything you have is so stupidly expensive. Your other option is taking a bigger bless and rely on your sacreds even more than you do anyway. Consider taking drain rather than misfortune since even your weakest research mage has 15rp.

I can't decide if the Imperial Enclave from Awful Nations is hilariously OP for their invulnerability 18 troops, sacred, and assassins, +20 resource 100 gold tax collectors, and fucking incredible ranged units, or godawful due to the fact that you can barely get four or five conscripts out of most forts per turn, an average RP of 6 per unit, and almost nonexistent magic powers with StR cap-only mages being the only ones with a potential above 2 in anything. Oh, and the fact that Stormtroopers are also CtR, who are great but a 47 resource non-sacred troop.

Seems like they get almost no troops but the couple that you do get are very good, as even amassing conscripts is difficult. If tramplers get into your lines, you're absolutely dead, though. Also, with their SHIT magic, they have no lategame.

They do get some Air, enough for Arrow Fend, which is so important.

The disruptor carbines are hilariously silly, as it's acid damage with ALL that entails. Hope your enemies weren't using iron weapons.

Their research isn't bad, but their battlemagic outside of cap is pretty terrible. On the other hand there are only 9 players in the game, and they have amazing rec-anywhere sacreds, retarded ranged units, and recruitable Holy 3s.

Take a big bless with some ranged support and try to end the game fast, before Doom, LA Underholm, MA Aza, and the motherfucking Nazis (if anyone picks them) get into their big blood.

I've been too much of a casual lately so I'm trying to get into Dominions 4. Using the pirated copy because I don't know if I'll be into games like this. The game freezes when I end my turn and I can't figure out why. Sometimes it will just freeze, sometimes the screen will turn red.
Any ideas? I was getting kind of excited to play too.

There used to be a working copy, I think 4.10. Dunno where the download for it went.

4.14 didn't work, and I haven't seen a working pirate copy since.
>>

He'd have a point if it wasn't for most of the top-tier nations being strong because of powerful national spells.

Nations shouldn't need crazy national spells to compete with the top nations, but right now they do.

Generic spells which can compete with them.

It tends to exist for all types of magic, but blood summons are the clearest example. Some of the generic summons are good, but the national summons (se'ir, ozelotl, tlahuelpuchi, etc) are insane.
>>

There's no need for national spells as is. If you cannot exploit late game spells as any nation, you have failed. Simple as.
>>
>>143951280
Thing is outside of meme games, you will often have a lot more blood slaves than gems.
>>
>>143951394
And?
>>
>>143951280
At the moment, exploiting late game means breaking into Tarts/Blood. Short of starting up a Nexus/Wish factory, NOTHING else is efficient enough to matter.

Green Lions perhaps come the closest, but even then they're simply too hard to mass. Earth/Air/Nature/Fire/Astral all lack good endgame unit summons (Water has Green Lions, I *guess* death has legion of wights, but honestly, Tarts are typically better).

So while their might no be a need for national spells, there sure as hell is a need for better spells. It's also telling that the top 3 nations in all ages all have fantastic national spells.
>>
>>143951793
The reasons why blood nations do so well in the late game is they can consistently grow their magical resource income per province rather than be limited to sites like gem spells. So they can spam their super mage spells and giant demon stack summon spells every turn.
>>
>>143951912
>they can consistently grow their magical resource income per province rather than be limited to sites like gem spells

Acquiring blood slaves by gaining more provinces isn't really any different than site searching across the board in all provinces. Both take mages turns too but blood takes many more.

While more slaves can be taken from a single province per turn per province than sites on average, it destroys population and also has weaker spells. Compare the blood summons with the kings and queens, or even with tarts. Blood's numbers are higher in slaves but not necessarily better. The only area where blood has an advantage is in globals but even then there aren't too many.
>>
>>143952195
The thing, is there's a lot more provinces with 5000 provinces than provinces with the exact site type you need. Microing a slave economy is tedious, but not too bad if you use wolves as patrollers and scouts to move them. Province loss is also much more negligible due to the income loss shouldn't be a huge issue in the late game.
>Compare the blood summons with the kings and queens, or even with tarts
2/3rd of tarts come out retarded, and the royalty costs 50 gems each and the only ones that can fly are air queens. Also, all blood spells are in the blood school, which is nice.
>>
>>143952195
>weaker summons
So, the Demon Lords are vastly better than the kings and queens in most cases, not the least because they actually break you into new pathing. When it comes to units it isn't even fucking close.

30 death gems for, we'll have a D9 cast it, for 26 wights.
vs
50 Blood Slaves (somewhere between 10-16.66 gems, I'll say around 1/2 the price to be generous) with a B9 for either 11 Storm Demons or 14 Demon Knights.

so 22 storm demons, 26 wights, or 28 demon knights. I would almost never take the wights. And it's a whole hell of a lot easier to get the B9s than the D9s.
>>
>>143952618
>2/3rd of tarts come out retarded

you must have the worst fucking tart luck then. I've tested around 200 or so (150 in an actual test, another 50ish in games) and consistently have around 50% nonretarded.

It was 48% nonretarded in the 150 test btw.
>>
>>143952781
Nope, it's 1/3rd as of the most recent tests.
>>
>>143952672
>So, the Demon Lords are vastly better than the kings and queens in most cases

Of course but you're comparing 150 slaves blood 9 with 50 gems conj 8. Blood in my experience is very reliant on the high end blood magic to be properly viable. Imo blood is only strong in the endgame and so I think any nation strongly based in blood is going to have a more challenging early-mid game than other nations and hence less of a chance in the lategame.

That's nice, but your belief doesn't conform to reality. Lots of blood nations have other strong things in their nation as well so that they don't need to rely on blood exclusively, and it has pretty good battlemagic to with stuff like leech

I'd sort of agree that EA/LA Mict have relatively weak early/midgame compared to stuff like Lanka or Xiblablabla, but that has less to do with their magic paths and more to do with the fact that people can put together answers to your jags before you get enough ozelotls to force them to have an answer to them too.

Factor in research to what you're saying too. Blood 8 is where good shit starts and blood 9 is where the real power lies.

I would make the argument that gem based magic is better because it can be more effective at lower levels of research. Say a guy goes for blood + 2 paths of magic compared to another for 3 paths of magic. Blood magic doesn't impact other magic types with research. Research into all other fields bar construction does not give blood power. Researching any other field than blood in the above example would be better given multiple magic types being able to take advantage of the research.

I think blood is massively overrated with the exception of the bless which is very much underrated. I find blood reliable in a way that other magic is not, as all you need is population. At the same time, its anaemic in nature and needs a strong economy well into mid-late game to really get going. Starting out most slaves will probably be used in empowerments straight up in large quantities.

>>143953678
Agreed but that's nation specific.
>>
>>143951273
Basically every nation with minor blood has no national summons. Same with everyone who tries to break into blood (which makes it a lot harder when the only generic blood mage you can summon requires a specific high level crosspath).

There's even nations with strong blood which get few/no national summons (MA Jotunheim, MA Xibalba, LA Abysia, LA Marignon). Most of these perform way below other blood nations, though it's hard to pinpoint exactly how much of that is because of the lack of summons.

>>143952195
>compare blood summons with tarts
Due to the need for GoR/Divine Name along with multiple casts to get a non-afflicted tart, I'd put the actual cost per tart at 40-50 gems each.

On top of that, the setup for tarts is a lot more difficult. D4 is the highest you can reasonably expect to get on your mages, so you need a total of 3 boosters to reach D7. That means you need expensive boosters, and if you want more than a single tart caster you need to get high astral as well as high death.
>>
>>143954156
I'm honestly surprised by how poorly Vaettiheim has performed in stats. I think it's a really great nation.
>>
>>143954109
>blood is overrated
Most hard blood nations with the exception of Hinnom are pretty damn good. Even MA and LA Aby has some tools which are pretty good in an experienced player.
>>
>>143954334
The much misused stats say that nations with national blood stuff do great and those without it don't.

WHAT IF
Raven Feast had the air crosspathiness removed, and was made two death gems?

It's logarithmic growth so you can't use plague rituals to rack up dead bodies in a province and then hit it for a fuckload of gems, but it's not self fueling, and costs too much to be able to do it in small quantities.

Demon summons (the main reason blood is so strong) are available around blood 4, give or take a level. National blood mage summons start around blood 6. Leech is blood 7, and sabbaths plus agony or harm are available earlier.

Blood even gets SCs earlier, at blood 6 for ice devils and blood 7 for arch devils.

Blood 8/9 have useful stuff, but blood doesn't need them to do powerful things. If you don't want the diversity of demon lords you can even stop at blood 7, the only thing I'd seriously miss is LfaL.

>>143954273
It might be because their paths are quite limited. They only have access to the sorcerous paths plus water, which seriously limits their options in a direct fight.

They're completely missing the important earth/air buffs too, which is likely getting in the way of turning Vaetti into size 1 blenders.

>>143955337
Everyone with death magic would just use it after any battle if you did that. You break even at 16 corpses, and start gaining gems when you reach 36 corpses or more.

I like it being in air magic, it gives air a reason and a way to break into death. It also gives it an interesting tradeoff where you have to consider the relative value of death gems compared to air gems. If it was a death spell all you'd need to consider is whether it gives a net gain in gems.

I'd like to see raven feast become a lot easier to cast, though. Even nations with air magic often can't use it.

On top of wind of death and wailing winds?
I don't know about way, though. I guess.
I played the sylvania mod nation and setting a up blood eco and then turning all the corpses from patrolling into death gems using the national raven feast was really fun.
>>
>>143957958
>On top of wind of death and wailing winds?
Both of those would basically require a death summon empowered in air, right? Wailing winds might be worth it, but I don't see wind of death being useful. For the 80 gems it'd cost (mound fiend plus air empower) I'm sure you could do more damage.

>I don't know about way, though. I guess.
Well, it gives you death gems in return for air at a pretty favorable rate. It only takes 90 death gems to get to D3, at which point you get death summons.

Using raven feast wisely, you could probably get 90 death gems (enough to get a D2 mage plus skull staff for summons) for half the price in air gems, and 45 gems to break into a new path is a steal.

I think it's partly due to their troops not being that great (vaetti are good buff targets but the best buffs are out of reach for a while), and they're quite heavily dependent on sabbaths and gygja's to do the heavy lifting. I probable should have noticed this when I joined the game
>>
Could someone show me their mods folder? I'm trying to get worthy heroes to work for a multiplayer game but it won't let me play the turn. The banner shows up in the corner and it lets me enable it but I don't know if it worked otherwise
>>
>>143994582

Just download this one

Are you sure you got the right version of the mod?
>>
What's the map for AwfulGame? I think I forgot to install it, because it's not letting me do my turn.
>>
>>143994582
You just need to put both the folder and .dm file in mods folder.

Thanks, I'll try it out. Do I just put the expanded folder and the .dm in the mods file then?

Yes.

Still nothing, might just message the guy and tell him to set me as AI. Is there a way to see if it works in another game?

Uhh, I need some pointers with the map editor. Are grey borders inaccesible by anything short of spells? Should I remove them entirely?
>>
>>144012218
I presume you mean province connections not borders, and they also allow for visibility and teleport movement, as well as provdist for spells. It makes sense for connections that are physically forboding to cross, but the provinces are technically adjacent, to prevent the "I'm right next to it but magic can't reach it due to no-roads".
