they have amazing unit acquisition but you're going to get raped by the Empire. A 5 stack of Demigryphs for example would destroy your entire infantry and not even break a sweat. Your goal is to outlast them by re-raising units and building up cheap armies while swarming them. A lot of people think Vampire Counts are terrible but the reason why they think that is because they lose in straight 1 vs 1 engagements in a lot of cases.
What you need to do is just spam lords with cheap units and fight everything 2 vs 1 or 3 vs 1 and spread corruption as much as possible so a single empire army has to fight on 3 fronts.

VC really makes me want either a witch hunter RPG in that setting or an open world RPG as a vampire/necromancer where you play in either first or third person and you move around the world spreading your lands and have to manage fear and hope so you don't cause the mortals to rebel against you or to just give up taking away your constant supply of undead. Hell, make an MMO that isn't cartoony WoW shit and is more like eve in terms of everything is player driven with a mix of star wars galaxies pre-nge. I just finished my legendary Empire campaign and it was very fun, lots of diplomacy at the beginning, lots of big wars at the end.

The army was varied and had an answer to everything, especially sieges.

Now playing as the VC and orcs I feel so underpowered. As orcs I can't even take the first dwarfen armies and as VC the lack of ranged and artillery feels so fucking bad.

The vampire campaign is so spooky. Just everything about it is amazing, I just wish it had 40 unit stacks so I don't have to drag multiple armies around. It really feels like someone or some people on the dev team really like the vampire counts. They feel really well done as far as effort goes compared to chaos especially. Same thing with the empire. They feel really polished as well. I mean there's the lack of balance but that can always be fixed with both mods and patches. I found chaos, dwarfs, and orcs to feel sort of hollow. Like I don't feel like I'm commanding a massive tide of orcs and that really hurts the dwarf campaign as well, and chaos lacks the choices you would expect to make like choosing the favour of a particular god.

I also wish that it had quests and shit like in king arthur. Those texts adventures were a lot of fun. Right now the whole quests seem half-assed and rushed. Like I expected migration to be a quest chain but nope, just like all the others its just a random buff/debuff and that's it.

If you leave the russians alone the norscans will mostly fight them and tie up their armies, or you can raze the russians which leads to norscan infighting. The Vampire Counts are fucking rad, I agree. Definitely my favourite faction, atleast for the campaign thanks to things like the vampiric corruption mechanic and the way they're encouraged to reinforce what they have and only expand in a deliberate manner. For battles I feel like they suffer due to the lack of missile units that are otherwise key in getting turtling AI to move against you.

As for Mannfred? His Soul Leech is insane, though I've yet to figure out how I want to build him. Reckon a decent split between Lore of Death and melee (not just for damage, but survivability awell).

How the fuck am I supposed to start as Vampire Counts? The initial scenario feels unfairly stacked against me. I win the beginning battle no problem, then Templehof usually moves its army from Templehof to Essen (whatever the next settlement you're supposed to capture is). If I don't suffer large casualties in that battle (I didn't on this runthrough), then I either turtle there to build up a big force while shitdick Count Templecock does the same thing which makes him unsiegeable, or I go and take the last settlement in my starting province. If I do the latter, he either sends an army to take it back which is usually supported by another, or, as he did in this run through, he sends a single fucking lord against my garrison of shit zombies and I can't defend against him.

I bit the bullet and he just sacked, but as soon as I rush my army to Templehof (I've been beelining for each settlement to give him the least amount of time to muster an army), you know what he does? Builds a fucking garrison building so now he has grave guard and other shit in a siege and my 20 stack has about a 10th of the balance of power.

I was there, oh Sigmar how could I forget. It started off with that damned noble arriving. Some fool from Altdorf arrived, visions of Sigmar or some such nonsense about being chosen to defeat the Carsteins and end their reign of terror. Brought some knights from reikland and some gunners from nuln. He gathered almost the entire garrison and we set off from Bechafen. Managed to convince some crossbowmen to Essen to join our little party. The further we traveled the stranger things got. At first the ground just got a bit muddy but then things got quiet, real quiet. At some points there weren't even any damn bugs. But every night when we'd try and sleep there'd be all manner of strange noises, I swear I heard a cow once, wasn't like any cow back on the farm though, it was deep like a dwarf's voice and sounded all hollow like. On we went and the trees themselves started to twist and the ground itself seemed to be almost dead. I swear those trees were watching us though. And those damned bats would never shut up.

As we were walking one of those nuln boys started talking about some "watch" he had "acquired." Started talking about how its all wrong and that it should be daylight out, not night. We set down for camp anyways. Woke up to a bunch of shouting and ran outside the tent to see and found that something had been eating that pompous lord's horse. Whatever it was it ran off before we could get a good look at it. There was no way we'd go chasing after whatever did it though. Serves that ass right for dragging us into that mess. We started marching along a rode that opened into some vast swamp. At least we were out of the woods but then things got real bad real fast. As we were clearing the forest we saw this giant tower and it was glowing. This strange awful green light and I swear there were screaming faces in that light. We then heard what sounded like marching, perfect marching.

Higher difficulties are basically all about exploiting the AI and only fighting battles where you have more units than them since their units with the same experience will always win in 1 vs 1 engagements if they are the same unit type.

It's one of the things that I find so off-putting about strategy games with AI. I want the AI to put up a fight and actively push me back, I don't want them to cheat because that just means in an equal fight I have to cheese their units and draw them into skirmishes where I can flank them.

The thing I don't get about underway vs march stance is that there are rare instances where march gives greater movement or the underway stance is blocked from moving.

For Chaos, I found growths went by pretty fast as long as you get your generals to get the +5 growth skill asap.

For healing units, I found they're also pretty fast at that in a sense. You just merge your old units and spend a turn or two recruiting new ones since you can send them right to your army even in enemy territory, which I think is probably faster than most races, although a little more costly.

Okay cool, what about the ghouls? They seem to be a pretty decent unit. I've been sending the ghouls in to smash into the front of units that are on the flank to knock them out of formation and have the horrors follow up before they reorganize. I feel that you're probably right about flanking with them. I raised a second army immediately with my first 2 pop, so I had two leveling.

The first was archaons and went for chosen and knights

The second, I was like "fuck it," and got trolls immediately. I then got the dragon ogre building there and replaced the leader with Kholek.

I then made a third army (my growth was pretty crazy at this point) and put the high leveled lord I had replaced into it, so it grew up pretty quickly.

Ghouls I would definitely flank with.

Reg grave guard is better for standard infantry. They have the anti inf bonus and more base damage than the great swords. The great sword grave guard will obviously damage more armoured units, but does less damage against regular units which the regular grave guard would be better at fighting.

The wolves aren't listed in the tooltip as being expendable, but treat them as if they are. They're useful for peeling formations or quick rear charges stacking with other LD debuffs.

So all I do is rush the first province as normal, just make sure in the very first turns you pay attention to your diplomatic options. The moment you get the GP penalty you're already fucked if you havnt gotten treaties/trade/basically any agreement you can grab

Also, declaring war on chaos turn 1 is a good way to stop other factions attacking you. Sure Chaos will come down and start fighting you, but would you rather fight just Chaos, or Chaos and every other faction that is within a inch of your dick?

If you want to take it a step further, send your agent immediately out to attack Chaos, you should get one fairly early on. Each successful action against an enemy army will boost your relation with every other faction who hates Chaos. Or just send a small 10 stack of spears or something and start attacking Chaos cities, even if you lose the army the diplomatic buff is huge.

Diplomacy in TW just equals attacking the enemy of my enemy over and over until they like you.

Keep in mind the regular GG also have shields. Doesn't add to their armour like in previous games, but it can help against missile fire. Though if you're throwing a metric fucktonne of great sword grave guard at them, I'm sure a few missiles won't make a difference before they get drowned in rusty two-handed swords.

Ghouls are exclusively flanking units, along with crypt horrors. They die to a wet fart, don't ever use them as a mainline unit. Crypt horrors are kinda shit, but that's not an abnormal thing with the VC roster.

Dire wolves are purely for chasing as they get dicked by dicked by everything in melee, vargheists suck. Your grave guard aren't going to hold their own against other factions power melees like chosen and ironbreakers, take that into account.

Well, in tabletop, great weapons also always strike last, and grave guard had a surprisingly ok initiative for being undead.. Though I guess that matters a lot less in 8th than it did in 7th, since casualties no longer reduce attacks the unit gets when it's its turn.

I'm afraid that I simply cannot get into Total Warhammer on the campaign map. In battles I do fine.

What should my first ten turns be for the various races? Who should I be looking to attack first as any of the races? How to get factions to confederate to me?

Am I doing something wrong? It seems like every major city in every province has a 15+ stack of garrison troops, and its either the enemy force marches away from me, endlessly playing cat and mouse, or they sit in their castles with full stacks and sieges take for fucking ever now. Am I really supposed to just sit outside a castle for 20+ turns just to take some random province?

Warhammer was enjoyable enough for me to finish a couple of campaigns so far.

The only other TW games I've completed campaigns in are the original Rome, Medieval 2, and a force-myself-to-actually-complete-spam-stacks-and-autoresolve Rome 2 campaign.

I really like that military allies and such count towards territory control. I was pretty immersed in my Empire campaign, caring for my little brothers and letting them remain independent.

The only kind of magic thats worthless is aoe attack magic. And for good reason. There isnt much place in this kind of game for a leader unit being able to look at units and then blow up 2 or 3 in one spell cast. At least Grimgore takes some time to whip ass. From the lets plays the company was doing, magic was alarmingly OP at first. Like Orc Shamans destroying any units they felt like OP. And then doing it again a minute later.

But buffs, debuffs, and single target magics are all pretty damn good and in some cases OP as fuck. Such as vampire magic users 1-2 shotting enemy lords OP.

Vampire cunts have a lot of expensive buildings, and need a lot of time to build up their infrastructure.

That's one of their big weak points if you ask me, they're incredibly vulnerable to the AI giving you the run around and smashing your settlements.

For every settlement they raid you need 2-4 turns of income to replace the buildings, and it's very difficult to make land grabs of your own when you need a lot of corruption setup, meaning a lot of income and turns, to actually hold onto territory without getting rebellions any time your LL leaves.

If the AI is using that much Pistoliers, then stack up the dogs. You should also get the talent that allows you to run your Chaos army without them getting tired, the dogs should be quick or as quick as the Pistoliers so you will catch them once they tired out a bit.

As Chaos a kiting ranged army is shit to fight, but you can easily change up your composition once a turn thanks to the horde mechanic.

Subjugating is nearly pointless, only did it for two Norsca clans and one got wiped out almost immediately by one of the other Norsca factions. Just head south and find weak settlements to loot, then keep moving and finding weak settlements. Once you can siege properly then loot one turn then raze it the next. Really tough major settlements I would just raze the first turn and not take the money. The autoresolve can really fuck large units like Lords, Giants, and Chaos Spawn.

It is really annoying encamping for 2-3 turns as you regenerate units you lost in a autoresolved siege battle.

Because you won't be able to shine until during/after the Chaos Invasion. Keep your upkeep low and turtle like a motherfucker while building up your infrastructure. Make absolutely sure to build the gold mine in Drakenhof, you're going to need it. Put Balefires in every province of Sylvania and use your agents to spread corruption when you're ready to move into Ostermark and Stirland. Try not to piss off the dwarves if you can help it. They'll never forgive you.

If you fight the battles against chaos lords manually, you'll find the auto resolve tends to undervalue their army comp. each one showed a complete washout in autoresolve but their elite units kill and rout hundreds of your guys.

Autoresolve is just so busted but so necessary for crushing the tedium of small garrisons and tiny follow-through battles. Hopefully someone can mod how the units are weighed.

Awaken them all, raze anyone who pushes back (for me it's usually Skaeling that resists subjugation the most and ends up dying)

Usually there will be infighting and I have yet to have a save where Bearsonling lasted more than a couple dozen turns and you'll end up with 1-2 guys dominating the north in the end. Usually by deep late-game your relations will crumble a little as you run out of common enemies and they fall behind tech-wise and so prove to be less and less competent allies. They helped me defeat bird-chan though, so Norscans get a huge + in my book

VC turned out to be my second favorite faction. I didn't really expect much from them but their monster selection and horde tactics are amazing. The damage of spells is not scaled with unit size, so Spirit Leech kills a hero/lord on small with one cast while you need 3 for ultra.
I guess medium or large is the unit size for which the skills are balanced

Start with empire, theyre the most versatile if mundane. They can do pretty much anything and cater to a wide variety of playstyles. Also this is my personal favorite TW so you made a good choice

Honestly, my experience has been the exact opposite.
Vargheists are great early game, but they reach a drop off point in the late mid game; and have to be babysat in order to keep them from getting killed off.
Terrorgheists, meanwhile, I can send in with a health buff alone at cavalry, a lord, or what have you, and leave them be for a moment while my main force works their shit out.

Cairn wraiths are very fragile and get rekt in melee fighting, while not doing anything that would justify their weakness.

Varghulfs are the best VC unit, but they're extremely vulnerable to the lategame units of other factions, spearmen, and need to be babysat by a lord.

Vargheists get locked in melee very easily and are not cut out for extended fighting.

Terrorgheists are surprisingly terrible, they have the same issue as vargheists with being bogged in melee with no chance of escape, and they cannot deal with crowds because no area attacks.

Just beat Dwarf campaign on legendary
