It does lock mages out of high level spells, though.

Try to keep some distance and bait out the charge, then roll towards them so you're in range for a punish. If it's the charge where he drags the sword in a straight line, go for a hit. If it's the one where he swings it in an arc and it's anime as fuck, be prepared to dodge two more times since it's a combo. The final jump attack is easy to punish.

It might take a couple of tries until you get the feel for his attacks, but once you've got the patterns down it's not a hard fight.

Have you ever played a fighting game? It's pretty much like that. You have to read your opponent. Try doing some quick moves and see how he responds. You have to think about what he's going to do a little more than what you are. React to him. It's easier to punish that way.
Other than that, experience is really the only thing that's going to help. As in, knowing weapons ranges, damages and what you can and not do.

So is there any real issues with the curved greatswords? I'm about to roll a shiva build and I haven't actually played with the swords but I remember murakomo being a beast in DaS1 and apparently exile curved is the best but also the heaviest

I use Murakumo a lot

The biggest advantage you have is that 99% have no idea how to deal with a curved GS.

Per swing the things are fucking great at doing damage, but as a result every swing takes a really long time to start up.

The spin weapon arts can't be parried I don't think, no one ever has for me. You can basically spam your way into a stunlock and full weaponart (my +10 refined murakumo does almost a thousand damage with full weaponart).

Range and moveset can be a bit weird but you get used to it. I'd use Murakumo though, exile GS is ugly and not cool.

SL120 in Dark Souls 3 everybody is a quality or quality/hollow build which is fucking boring. If you play pure STR or pure DEX you're gimping yourself. You'll run into the occasional mage, but they never hit you anyway because you have 40 endurance.

I'm probably worse since I use a winged spear with offhand estoc (which I can switch to a lothric knight shield in case of giant weapons that I have to avoid ever getting hit with and can't trade with). Spears are notorious for being parrybait.

I mean if I'm paying attention though I fucking destroy people since you never know whether I'm going to hit you with the spear or the estoc, or running at people with a shield up and they don't know if I'm going to running R1 or it's a fake-out into backstab. If I'm paying attention, most people lose all confidence in their parry ability once they whiff once or twice and get half of their life or more eaten... but then I got R1 spam happy and the BKGA comes out and I'm like "fuck.... I'm dumb."

It's good though, humbling. Keeps you honest. Ultimately it's why I believe there are only 2 types of duels in DS3: those involving 1H with a parry item, and those that aren't. I play completely different depending on which category the match is in at any given point in time.

Unless you're a caster build, you shouldn't rely much on buffs anyway, and the infusions aren't needed on (most) boss weapons
even if you ignore the bleed, flamberge is still very good
