This game is kinda unique in that it's had user submitted designs and weapons since near the beginning. That's pretty creative on everyone's part, valve and any collaborators. Anyone who wants to can participate in a shared environment and for free on top of that.

Unusuals are pretty far from art unless you look at Dada, when artists and patrons started appreciating elements of chance in their practices. Every unusual when it's made is a goddamn dice roll to see if a hat can get a particle effect that makes sense.

Sticky spam is good, but it's far from being broken.

You need 4 kills with that weapon to get the bonuses and it's incredibly easy to avoid getting killed by it. Although granted, weapons that snowball like that are fucking stupid.

Demoknight isn't broken at all, far from being viable in anything but the most braindead of public servers.

Balancing for pubs is never a good idea.

that would be fine if it had a proper downside to balance it out, so soldier pays a price for going fast. Currently it's like pre-nerf GRU.

if you're running it to mid/frontline you can just use it for escape plan rollout or for a speed boost where there are no enemies to hit you during the minicrits (like Heavies do with GRU), never get it out after that (as the mark for death fades in only a second), and thus you got a free speed boost and didn't take any minicrits

despite the name it's just as good for getting into combat instead of out of it

it needs a more relevant downside, Soldier's balanced with a normal melee like Shovel, EP is too much

Soldiers travelling faster and the game being faster paced is nice, but there needs to be tradeoffs involved so that there's class balance; if Soldier is going to be a Scout-Soldier hybrid with EP, then he needs to take on a downside of the downsides of Scout in exchange, such as permanent lower durability instead of just temporary mini-crits.

If you give Soldier a weapon which makes him travel faster for no relevant downside, you make him more powerful than other classes who don't necessarily get the same weapon and thus make all those classes less viable; and you also make all other melee weapons in the same slot a less viable choice too

That's why EP needs to have a relevant downside in proportion to the relevance of its speed boost

If used like Heavies use the GRU, that downside doesn't matter. You use it to travel more quickly to mid or the frontline after some rocket jumps, then you put it away 1 second before you reach the frontline, because that's how long it takes the mark for death to fade. It's called the Escape Plan rollout.

If you have stock melee out, unless you're already in a really tight space, you're not going to be able to catch anyone to hit them with your shovel except maybe Heavy or another Soldier. You'll just get kited and die without hitting anything. On the other hand, Escape Plan lets you outrun every class except Scout and thwack them in the face.

Well, in practice, as we can see from the picture, the majority of Soldiers choose to use it, take it for the escape plan rollout, and then not pull it out again except for emergency situations. In this way, they have gained, a free speed boost. Which is why it is the most used Soldier melee, and makes the Soldier too powerful in my opinion, as I believe stock Soldier is a balanced class.

That's why Soldiers don't pull it out when they're in the enemy sightline, they use it to travel to the battlefield faster for less Health cost, like Heavies use the GRU.

The escape plan is overpowered. Just like the ubersaw (and a lot of other unlocks). It is agreed to most of the competitive community that these weapons enhance the games, and are therefore left the way they are. Imagine a game with no ubersaw for the medic. The medic would have even less influence on the game then he already has.

Which takes less effort to balance? Buffing all the classes that are weaker than Escape Plan Soldier up to his level as well as buffing all the other weaker melees in the slot, or simply giving Escape Plan a slightly bigger downside?

It's similar to the GRU in that both the Heavy and Soldier hold out the melee weapon in question, which causes them to take mini-crits and move more quickly, until they see the enemy, at which point they put it away, so that they have gained a speed boost without taking mini-crits from the enemy.

There are differences, yes. One is that EP's speed boost is granted when Soldier is at low health, which is something he does normally anyway so there is no opportunity cost to involve the EP, and which he will quickly get back in heals or packs. The other difference is that GRU's mark for death lasts 4 seconds, while EP's mark for death lasts only 1 second.

If not the kit then heals once your med catches up/arrows you, you'll rapidly get the health back. That's beside the point, because the fact is you were already going to be down Health anyway, so there's no opportunity cost to using Escape Plan.

Either way, it lets you get to the frontline quicker for a downside which doesn't matter, which is why it has such a superior equip rate. It's a buff to Soldier which he doesn't need, and it should have a relevant downside to bring it closer into line with the other 5 weapons in the slot.
